We present a statistical model of the selection function of cold neutral gas in high-redshift (z~2.5) absorption systems. The model is based on the canonical two-phase model of the neutral gas in the interstellar medium and contains only one parameter for which we do not have direct observational priors: namely the central pressure (P*) of an L* halo at z=2.5. Using observations of the fraction of cold gas absorption in strong HI-selected absorbers, we are able to constrain P*. The model simultaneously reproduces the column density distributions of HI and H$_2$, and we derive an expected total incidence of cold gas at z~2.5 of $l_{CNM} = 12\times 10^{-3}$. Compared to recent measurements of the incidence of CI-selected absorbers (EW$_{CI\,1560}$ > 0.4 Å), the value of $l_{CNM}$ from our model indicates that only ~15% of the total cold gas would lead to strong CI absorption (EW > 0.4 Å). Nevertheless, CI lines are extremely useful probes of the cold gas as they are relatively easy to detect and provide direct constraints on the physical conditions. Lastly, our model self-consistently reproduces the fraction of cold gas absorbers as a function of N(HI).
The ubiquity of very thin and lengthy cold neutral media (CNM) has been reported by multiple authors in the HI community. Yet, the reason of how the CNM can be so long and lengthy is still in debate. In this paper, we recognize a new type of instability due to the attractive nature of the pressure force in the unstable phase. We provide a new estimation of the average CNM filament aspect ratio with the consideration of force balances at the phase boundary, which is roughly 5-20 in common CNM environment. We show that most of the cold filaments are less filamentary than what usually predicted v…
Tracing the transition between the diffuse atomic interstellar medium (ISM) and cold, dense gas is crucial for deciphering the star formation cycle in galaxies. Here we present MACH, a new survey of cold neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption at $21\rm\,cm$ by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We target 42 bright background sources with $60<l<110^{\circ}$, $30<b<62^{\circ}$, significantly expanding the sample of publicly-available, sensitive $21\rm\,cm$ absorption outside the Galactic plane. With matching $21\rm\,cm$ emission data from the EBHIS survey, we measure the total column density and col…
Physical properties of the tiny scale structures in the cold neutral medium (CNM) of galaxies is a long-standing puzzle. Only a few lines of sights in our Galaxy have been studies with mixed results on the scale-invariant properties of such structures. Moreover, since these studies measure the variation of neutral hydrogen optical depth, they do not directly constrain the density structures. In this letter, we investigate the possibility of measuring the properties of density and spin temperature structures of the \HI from absorption studies of \HI. Our calculations show that irrespective of t…
We present the Green Bank Telescope absorption survey of cold atomic hydrogen ($\lesssim 300$K) in the inner halo of low-redshift galaxies. The survey aims to characterize the cold gas distribution and to address where condensation - the process where ionized gas accreted by galaxies condenses into cold gas within the disks of galaxies - occurs. Our sample consists of 16 galaxy-quasar pairs with impact parameters of $\le$ 20kpc. We detected an HI absorber associated with J0958+3222 (NGC 3067) and HI emission from six galaxies. We also found two \ion{Ca}{2} absorption system in the archival SDS…
The spatial distribution of neutral hydrogen (H I) emission is a powerful probe of interstellar medium physics. The small-scale structure in H I channel maps is often assumed to probe the velocity field rather than real density structures. In this work we directly test this assumption, using high-resolution GALFA-H I observations and 50,985 quasar spectra from SDSS. We measure the equivalent widths of interstellar Na I D$_1$ and Na I D$_2$ absorption, and robustly conclude that they depend more strongly on the column density of small-scale structure in H I than on either the large-scale H I st…
Using new large area maps of the cold neutral medium (CNM) fraction, $f_{\rm CNM}$, we investigate the relationship between the CNM, the abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the anomalous microwave emission (AME). We first present our $f_{\rm CNM}$ map based on full-sky HI4PI data, using a convolutional neural network to covert the spectroscopic HI data to $f_{\rm CNM}$. We demonstrate that $f_{\rm CNM}$ is strongly correlated with the fraction of dust in PAHs as estimated from mid- and far-infrared dust emission. In contrast, we find no correlation between $f_{\rm CNM}$ a…
This review summarizes recent studies of the cold neutral hydrogen gas associated with galaxies probed via the HI 21-cm absorption line. HI 21-cm absorption against background radio-loud quasars is a powerful tool to study the neutral gas distribution and kinematics in foreground galaxies from kilo-parsec to parsec scales. At low redshifts (z<0.4), it has been used to characterize the distribution of high column density neutral gas around galaxies and study the connection of this gas with the galaxy's optical properties. The neutral gas around galaxies has been found to be patchy in distributi…
A recent publication (Li et al. 2021) discovered one of the largest filamentary neutral hydrogen features dubbed Cattail from high resolution FAST observations that might be a new galactic arm of our own Milky Way. However in the analysis, it was suggested that this neutral hydrogen feature is cold despite having 12km/s total linewidth. We evaluate the probability whether the Cattail is actually cold neutral media via the newly developed Velocity Decomposition Algorithm (Yuen et al. 2021a) and Force Balancing Model (Ho et al. 2021a). We discovered that even with the inclusion of the galactic s…
The abundance of H2 in molecular clouds, relative to the commonly used tracer CO, has only been measured toward a few embedded stars, which may be surrounded by atypical gas. We present observations of near-infrared absorption by H2, CO, and dust toward stars behind molecular clouds, providing a representative sample of these molecules in cold molecular gas, primarily in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. We find N_H2/A_V ~ 1.0x10^21 cm^-2, N_CO/A_V ~ 1.5x10^17 cm^-2 (1.8x10^17 including solid CO), and N_H2/N_CO ~ 6000. The measured N_H2/N_CO ratio is consistent with that toward embedded stars in var…
There is a well known disparity between the evolution the star formation rate density, ψ*, and the abundance of neutral hydrogen (HI), the raw material for star formation. Recently, however, we have shown that ψ* may be correlated with the fraction of cool atomic gas, as traced through the 21-cm absorption of HI. This is expected since star formation requires cold (T ~ 10 K) gas and so this could address the issue of why the star formation rate density does not trace the bulk atomic gas. The data are, however, limited to redshifts of z < 2, where both ψ* and the cold gas fraction exhibit a sim…
We analyzed absorption features arising from interstellar neutral carbon that appeared in the UV spectra of 89 stars recorded in the highest resolution echelle modes of STIS on HST so that we could determine the relative populations of collisionally excited fine structure levels in the atom's electronic ground state. From this information we derive the distribution of thermal pressures in the diffuse, cold neutral medium. We find a lognormal pressure distribution (weighted by mass) with a mean in log (p/k) equal to 3.58 and an rms dispersion of at least 0.175 dex that plausibly arises from tur…
We report a deep Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) search for Galactic H{\sc i} 21cm absorption towards the quasar B0438$-$436, yielding the detection of wide, weak H{\sc i} 21cm absorption, with a velocity-integrated H{\sc i} 21cm optical depth of $0.0188 \pm 0.0036$~km~s$^{-1}$. Comparing this with the H{\sc i} column density measured in the Parkes Galactic All-Sky Survey gives a column density-weighted harmonic mean spin temperature of $3760 \pm 365$~K, one of the highest measured in the Galaxy. This is consistent with most of the H{\sc i} along the sightline arising in the stable warm…
It has recently been shown that the abundance of cold neutral gas may follow a similar evolution as the star formation history. This is physically motivated, since stars form out of this component of the neutral gas and if the case, would resolve the longstanding issue that there is a clear disparity between the total abundance of neutral gas and star forming activity over the history of the Universe. Radio-band 21-cm absorption traces the cold gas and comparison with the Lyman-alpha absorption, which traces all of the gas, provides a measure of the cold gas fraction or the spin temperature. T…
We present ten metallicity measurements for quasar absorbers near $z=1.2$ that were selected for having unusually significant ZnII absorption in their SDSS spectra. Follow-up UV space spectroscopy of the Ly$α$ region shows that all ten have damped Ly$α$ (DLA) absorption, corresponding to neutral hydrogen column densities in the range $2.4\times 10^{20}$ $\le$ N(HI) $\le$ $2.5\times 10^{21}$ atoms cm$^{-2}$, and indicating that the gas is very optically thick and essentially neutral. The sample is a very small subset of systems compiled by searching the University of Pittsburgh catalog of $\app…
Many radio galaxies show the presence of dense and dusty gas near the active nucleus. This can be traced by both 21cm HI absorption and soft X-ray absorption, offering new insight into the physical nature of the circumnuclear medium of these distant galaxies. To better understand this relationship, we investigate soft X-ray absorption as an indicator for the detection of associated HI absorption, as part of preparation for the First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH) to be undertaken with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). We present the results of our pilot study usi…
Resolving the phase structure of neutral hydrogen (HI) is crucial for understanding the life cycle of the interstellar medium (ISM). However, accurate measurements of HI temperature and density are limited by the availability of background continuum sources for measuring HI absorption. Here we test the use of deep learning for extracting HI properties over large areas without optical depth information. We train a 1D convolutional neural network using synthetic observations of 3D numerical simulations of the ISM to predict the fraction of cold neutral medium (f_CNM) and the correction to the op…
We present results from our search for HI 21-cm and OH 18-cm absorption at z~1-1.4 towards red quasars showing strong MgII absorption using uGMRT. The quasars J1501+1822 and J1521+5508 show multiple strong associated MgII absorption at z~1.1 and signature of reddening in their optical spectra. We report the detection of HI 21-cm absorption towards J1521+5508 at the systemic redshift of the quasar, with N(HI) =(1.2 +/- 0.2) x 10^{20} cm^{-2} for spin temperature of 100 K and unit covering factor. The HI 21-cm absorption is offset from the blueshifted strong MgII absorbers by >~1500 km/s. We do …

We present 21-cm absorption measurements towards 12 radio continuum sources with previously identified thermally-unstable warm neutral medium (WNM). These observations were obtained with the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) and were complemented with the HI emission spectra obtained with the Arecibo Observatory. Out of 12 sources, HI absorption was detected along 5 lines of sight (seven new absorption features in total), resulting in a detection rate of ~42%. While our observations are sensitive to the WNM with a spin temperature T_s<3000 K, we detected only two wide absorption lines with T_s=…
By comparing the widths of absorption lines from OI, SiII and FeII in the redshift z=2.076 single-component damped Lyman alpha absorption system in the spectrum of Q2206-199 we establish that these absorption lines arise in Warm Neutral Medium gas at ~12000 +/- 3000K. This is consistent with thermal equilibrium model estimates of ~ 8000K for the Warm Neutral Medium in galaxies, but not with the presence of a significant cold component. It is also consistent with, but not required by, the absence of CII* fine structure absorption in this system. Some possible implications concerning abundance e…
We report the direct detection of cold HI gas in a cloud ejected from the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) towards the Magellanic Stream. The cloud is part of a fragmented shell of HI gas on the outskirts of the SMC. This is the second direct detection of cold HI associated with the Magellanic Stream using absorption. The cold gas was detected using 21-cm HI absorption-line observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) towards the extra-galactic source PMN J0029$-$7228. We find a spin (excitation) temperature for the gas of $68 \pm 20$ K. We suggest that breaking super shells from…
The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will transform our understanding of the role of the cold, atomic gas in galaxy evolution. The interstellar medium (ISM) is the repository of stellar ejecta and the birthsite of new stars and, hence, a key factor in the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time. Cold, diffuse, atomic clouds are a key component of the ISM, but so far this phase has been difficult to study, because its main tracer, the HI 21 cm line, does not constrain the basic physical information of the gas (e.g., temperature, density) well. The SKA opens up the opportunity to study this component…
We present the first results from the Small Magellanic Cloud portion of a new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) HI absorption survey of both of the Magellanic Clouds, comprising over 800 hours of observations. Our new HI absorption line data allow us to measure the temperature and fraction of cold neutral gas in a low metallicity environment. We observed 22 separate fields, targeting a total of 55 continuum sources against 37 of which we detected HI absorption; from this we measure a column density weighted mean average spin temperature of $<T_{s}>=150$ K. Splitting the spectra into ind…
We present the results of a blind search for intervening HI 21 cm absorption toward 260 radio sources in the redshift range 0<z<2.74 with the Green Bank Telescope. The survey has the sensitivity to detect sub-damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems for HI spin temperatures $T_s/f$ = 100 K, and despite the successful re-detection of ten known 21 cm absorbers in the sample, we detect no new absorption lines in the full survey. Sources detected in 21 cm absorption were also searched for hydroxyl (OH) 18 cm absorption and we re-detect 1667 MHz OH absorption toward PKS 1830-211. We searched for intervenin…
In the cold neutral medium, high out-of-equilibrium temperatures are created by intermittent dissipation processes, including shocks, viscous heating, and ambipolar diffusion. The high-temperature excursions are thought to explain the enhanced abundance of CH$^{+}$ observed along diffuse molecular sight-lines. Intermittent high temperatures should also have an impact on H$_2$ line luminosities. We carry out simulations of MHD turbulence in molecular clouds including heating and cooling, and post-process them to study H$_2$ line emission and hot-gas chemistry, particularly the formation of CH$^…
To advance our understanding of the fuelling and feedback processes which power the Universe's most massive black holes, we require a significant increase in our knowledge of the molecular gas which exists in their immediate surroundings. However, the behaviour of this gas is poorly understood due to the difficulties associated with observing it directly. We report on a survey of 18 brightest cluster galaxies lying in cool cores, from which we detect molecular gas in the core regions of eight via carbon monoxide (CO), cyanide (CN) and silicon monoxide (SiO) absorption lines. These absorption l…
We present results from a spectroscopically blind search for associated and intervening HI 21-cm and OH 18-cm absorption lines towards 88 AGNs at $2\le z\le5$ using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT). The sample of AGNs with 1.4 GHz spectral luminosity in the range, $10^{27 - 29.3}$ W/Hz, is selected using mid-infrared colors and closely resembles the distribution of the underlying quasar population. The search for associated or proximate absorption, defined to be within 3000 km/s of the AGN redshift, led to one HI 21-cm absorption detection (M1540-1453; $z_{abs}$= 2.1139). T…
We aim at analysing systematically the distribution and physical properties of neutral and mildly ionised gas in the Milky Way halo, based on a large absorption-selected data set. Multi-wavelength studies were performed combining optical absorption line data of CaII and NaI with follow-up HI 21-cm emission line observations along 408 sight lines towards low- and high-redshift QSOs. We made use of archival optical spectra obtained with UVES/VLT. HI data were extracted from the Effelsberg-Bonn HI survey and the Galactic All-Sky survey. For selected sight lines we obtained deeper follow-up observ…

Cold atomic hydrogen clouds are the precursors of molecular clouds. Due to self-absorption, the opacity of cold atomic hydrogen may be high, and this gas may constitute an important mass component of the interstellar medium (ISM). Atomic hydrogen gas can be cooled to temperatures much lower than found in the cold neutral medium (CNM) through collisions with molecular hydrogen. In this paper, we search for HI Narrow Self-Absorption (HINSA) features in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as an indicator of such cold HI clouds, and use the results to quantify atomic masses and atomic-to-molecular ga…

Dynamic and thermal processes regulate the structure of the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM), and ultimately establish how galaxies evolve through star formation. Thus, to constrain ISM models and better understand the interplay of these processes, it is of great interest to measure the thermal pressure ($P_{\rm th}$) of the diffuse, neutral gas. By combining [C II] 158 $μ$m, HI, and CO data from 31 galaxies selected from the Herschel KINGFISH sample, we have measured thermal pressures in 534 predominantly atomic regions with typical sizes of $\sim$1 kiloparsec. We find a distribution of …
Chemical networks used for models of interstellar clouds contain many reactions, some of them with poorly determined rate coefficients and/or products. In this work, we report a method for improving the predictions of molecular abundances using sensitivity methods and ab initio calculations. Based on the chemical network osu.2003, we used two different sensitivity methods to determine the most important reactions as a function of time for models of dense cold clouds. Of these reactions, we concentrated on those between C and C3 and between C and C5, both for their effect on specific important …
We have studied the small scale distribution of atomic hydrogen (HI) using 21-cm absorption spectra against multiple-component background radio continuum sources from the 21-SPONGE survey and the Millennium Arecibo Absorption Line Survey. We have found $>5σ$ optical depth variations at a level of $\sim0.03-0.5$ between 13 out of 14 adjacent sightlines separated by a few arcseconds to a few arcminutes, suggesting the presence of neutral structures on spatial scales from a few to thousands of AU (which we refer to as tiny scale atomic structure, TSAS). The optical depth variations are strongest …
We present the results from our survey of HI 21-cm absorption, using GMRT, VLA and WSRT, in a sample of 55 z<0.4 galaxies towards radio sources with impact parameters (b) in the range ~0-35 kpc. In our primary sample (defined for statistical analyses) of 40 quasar-galaxy-pairs (QGPs), probed by 45 sightlines, we have found seven HI 21-cm absorption detections, two of which are reported here for the first time. Combining our primary sample with measurements having similar optical depth sensitivity ($\intτdv$ <= 0.3 km/s) from the literature, we find a weak anti-correlation (rank correlation coe…

Mapping a lower limit on the mass fraction of the cold neutral medium using Fourier transformed HI 21cm emission line spectra: Application to the DRAO Deep Field from DHIGLS and the HI4PI survey
We present JVLA-C observations of the HI gas in JO204, one of the most striking jellyfish galaxies from the GASP survey. JO204 is a massive galaxy in the low-mass cluster Abell 957 at z=0.04243. The HI map reveals an extended 90 kpc long ram-pressure stripped tail of neutral gas, stretching beyond the 30 kpc long ionized gas tail and pointing away from the cluster center. The HI mass seen in emission is (1.32 $ \pm 0.13) \times 10^{9} \rm M_{\odot}$, mostly located in the tail. The northern part of the galaxy disk has retained some HI gas, while the southern part has already been completely st…
The processes allowing the escape of ionizing photons from galaxies into the intergalactic medium are poorly known. To understand how Lyman continuum (LyC) photons escape galaxies, we constrain the HI covering fractions and column densities using ultraviolet HI and metal absorption lines of 18 star-forming galaxies which have Lyman series observations. Nine of these galaxies are confirmed LyC emitters. We fit the stellar continuum, dust attenuation, metal, and HI properties to consistently determine the UV attenuation, as well as the column densities and covering factors of neutral hydrogen an…
We present the first unbiased survey of neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The survey utilises pilot HI observations with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope as part of the Galactic ASKAP HI (GASKAP-HI) project whose dataset has been processed with the GASKAP-HI absorption pipeline, also described here. This dataset provides absorption spectra towards 229 continuum sources, a 275% increase in the number of continuum sources previously published in the SMC region, as well as an improvement in the quality of absorption spectra ove…
We present a survey for neutral atomic-carbon (CI) along gamma-ray burst (GRB) sightlines, which probes the shielded neutral gas-phase in the interstellar medium (ISM) of GRB host galaxies at high redshift. We compile a sample of 29 medium- to high-resolution GRB optical afterglow spectra spanning a redshift range through most of cosmic time from $1 < z < 6$. We find that seven ($\approx 25\%$) of the GRBs entering our statistical sample have CI detected in absorption. It is evident that there is a strong excess of cold gas in GRB hosts compared to absorbers in quasar sightlines. We investigat…
Context. The Lyman alpha emission line of galaxies is an important tool for finding galaxies at high redshift, and thus probe the structure of the early universe. However, the resonance nature of the line and its sensitivity to dust and neutral gas is still not fully understood. Aims. We present measurements of the velocity, covering fraction and optical depth of neutral gas in front of two well known local blue compact galaxies that show Lyman alpha in emission: ESO 338-IG 04 and Haro 11. We thus test observationally the hypothesis that Lyman alpha can escape through neutral gas by being Dopp…
It is well established that MgII absorption lines detected in background quasar spectra arise from gas structures associated with foreground galaxies. The degree to which galaxy evolution is driven by the gas cycling through halos is highly uncertain because their gas mass density is poorly constrained. Fitting the MgII equivalent width (W) distribution with a Schechter function and applying the N(HI)-W correlation of Menard & Chelouche, we computed Omega(HI)_MgII ~ Omega(HI)_halo =(1.41 +0.75 -0.44)x10^-4 for 0.4<z<1.4. We exclude DLAs from our calculations so that Omega(HI)_halo comprises ac…
Absorption lines from molecular hydrogen ($\rm H_2$) in the spectra of background sources are a powerful probe of the physical conditions in intervening cold neutral medium. At high redshift, $z>2$, $\rm H_2$ lines are conveniently shifted in the optical domain, allowing the use of ground-based telescopes to perform high-resolution spectroscopy, which is essential for a proper analysis of the cold gas. We describe recent observational progress, based on the development of efficient pre-selection techniques in low-resolution spectroscopic surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The…
We present detailed photo+collisional ionization models and kinematic models of the multi-phase absorbing gas, detected within the HST/COS, HST/STIS, and Keck/HIRES spectra of the background quasar TON 153, at 104 kpc along the projected minor axis of a star-forming spiral galaxy (z=0.6610). Complementary g'r'i'Ks photometry and stellar population models indicate that the host galaxy is dominated by a 4 Gyr stellar population with slightly greater than solar metallicity and has an estimated log(M*)=11 and a log(Mvir)=13. Photoionization models of the low ionization absorption, (MgI, SiII, MgII…
We present recent results from our searches of 21-cm absorption using GBT, GMRT, VLBA and WSRT to trace the evolution of cold gas in galaxies. Using ~130 sight lines with 21-cm absorption measurements, we find that within the measurement uncertainty, the 21-cm detection rate in strong MgII systems is constant over 0.5<z<1.5. Since stellar feedback processes are expected to diminish the filling factor of CNM over 0.5<z<1, this lack of evolution in the 21-cm detection rate in MgII absorbers is intriguing. Further, we find that if the majority of 21-cm absorbers arise from DLAs then the cross-sec…
Galactic and extra-galactic sources produce X-rays that are often absorbed by molecules and atoms in giant molecular clouds (GMCs), which provides valuable information about their composition and physical state. We mimic this phenomenon with a laboratory Z-pinch X-ray source, which is impinged on neutral molecular gas. The novel technique produces a soft X-ray pseudo continuum using a pulsed-current generator. The absorbing gas is injected from a 1 cm long planar gas-puff without any window or vessel along the line of sight. An X-ray spectrometer with a resolving power of $λ/Δλ\sim$420, compar…
