Interacting spins in quantum magnet can cooperate and exhibit exotic states like the quantum spin liquid. To explore the materialization of such intriguing states, the determination of effective spin Hamiltonian of the quantum magnet is thus an important, while at the same time, very challenging inverse many-body problem. To efficiently learn the microscopic spin Hamiltonian from the macroscopic experimental measurements, here we propose an unbiased Hamiltonian searching approach that combines various optimization strategies, including the automatic differentiation and Bayesian optimization, etc, with the exact diagonalization and many-body thermal tensor network calculations. We showcase the accuracy and powerfulness by applying it to training thermal data generated from a given spin Hamiltonian, and then to realistic experimental data measured in the spin-chain compound Copper Nitrate and triangular-lattice materials TmMgGaO4. This automatic Hamiltonian searching constitutes a very promising approach in the studies of the intriguing spin liquid candidate magnets and correlated electron materials in general.
We explore feasibility of a quantum self-correcting memory based on 3D spin Hamiltonians with topological quantum order in which thermal diffusion of topological defects is suppressed by macroscopic energy barriers. To this end we characterize the energy landscape of stabilizer code Hamiltonians with local bounded-strength interactions which have a topologically ordered ground state but do not have string-like logical operators. We prove that any sequence of local errors mapping a ground state of such Hamiltonian to an orthogonal ground state must cross an energy barrier growing at least as a …
We construct a Hamiltonian whose ground state encodes a time-independent emulation of quan- tum teleportation. We calculate properties of the Hamiltonian, using exact diagonalization and a mean-field theory, and argue that it has a gap. The system exhibits an illuminating relationship to the well-known AKLT (Affleck, Lieb, Kennedy and Tasaki) model.
Quantum dimer models exhibit quantum critical points and liquid states when the ground state is the resonating-valence bond (RVB) state. We construct SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 Hamiltonians with the same RVB ground state. The main technical obstacle overcome is the fact that different "dimer" configurations in the spin model are not orthogonal to each other. We show that the physics depends on how dimers are related to the spins, and find a Hamiltonian that may be quantum critical.
We construct a parent Hamiltonian for the family of non-Abelian chiral spin liquids proposed recently by two of us [PRL 102, 207203 (2009)], which includes the Abelian chiral spin liquid proposed by Kalmeyer and Laughlin, as the special case S=1/2. As we use a circular disk geometry with an open boundary, both the annihilation operators we identify and the Hamiltonians we construct from these are exact only in the thermodynamic limit.
The Haldane phase is the prototype of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of spin chain systems. It can be protected by several symmetries having in common the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum. Here we explore in depth this degeneracy for the spin-1 AKLT and bilinear-biquadratic Hamiltonians and show the emergence of a bulk-edge correspondence that relates the low energy properties of the entanglement Hamiltonian of a periodic chain and that of the physical Hamiltonian of an open chain. We find that the entanglement spectrum can be described in terms of two spins-1/2 behaving as…
We revisit the Jordan-Wigner transformation, showing that --rather than a non-local isomorphism between different fermionic and spin Hamiltonian operators-- it can be viewed in terms of local identities relating different realizations of projection operators. The construction works for arbitrary dimension of the ambient lattice, as well as of the on-site vector space, generalizing Jordan-Wigner's result. It provides direct mapping of local quantum spin problems into local fermionic problems (and viceversa), under the (rather physical) requirement that the latter are described by Hamiltonian's …
A simple derivation of the effective spin-wave Hamiltonian for a double-exchange system with infinitely large Hund's-rule coupling is demonstrated. The formalism can be applied to models with arbitrary range of hopping as well as those with randomness. The result shows that, within the leading order of the 1/S expansion, one magnon excitation spectrum can be described by the Heisenberg model.
We show how to map local fermionic problems onto local spin problems on a lattice in any dimension. The main idea is to introduce auxiliary degrees of freedom, represented by Majorana fermions, which allow us to extend the Jordan-Wigner transformation to dimensions higher than one. We also discuss the implications of our results in the numerical investigation of fermionic systems.
From the double-exchange Hamiltonian with classical localized spins in the limit of large but finit Hund exchange coupling we obtain the $t-J$ model (with classical localized spins).
We present a method for constructing parent Hamiltonians for the chiral spin liquid. We find two distinct Hamiltonians for which the chiral spin liquid on a square lattice is an exact zero-energy ground state. We diagonalize both Hamiltonians numerically for 16-site lattices, and find that the chiral spin liquid, modulo its two-fold topological degeneracy, is indeed the unique ground state for one Hamiltonian, while it is not unique for the other.
We construct a Hamiltonian that singles out the chiral spin liquid on a square lattice with periodic boundary conditions as the exact and, apart from the two-fold topological degeneracy, unique ground state.
In this chapter we review the quantitative and qualitative aspects of describing the properties of magnetic solids on the basis of electronic Hamiltonian. We show that a spin Hamiltonian approach becomes consistent with an electronic Hamiltonian approach if the spin lattice and its associated spin exchange parameters, to be used for the spin Hamiltonian, are determined by the energy-mapping analysis based on DFT calculations. The preferred spin orientation (i.e., the magnetic anisotropy) of a magnetic ion is not predicted by a spin Hamiltonian because it does not include the orbital degree of …
Integrable Hamiltonians for higher spin periodic XXZ chains are constructed in terms of the spin generators; explicit examples for spins up to 3/2 are given. Relations between Hamiltonians for some U_q(sl_2)-symmetric and U(1)-symmetric universal r-matrices are studied; their properties are investigated. A certain modification of the higher spin periodic chain Hamiltonian is shown to be an integrable U_q(sl_2)-symmetric Hamiltonian for an open chain.
We derive a new microscopic spin Hamiltonian for Rashba-coupled double exchange metals. The Hamiltonian consists of anisotropic interactions of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) and Kitaev form, in addition to the standard isotropic term. We validate the spin Hamiltonian by comparing results with those on the exact spin-fermion model, and present its phase diagram using large scale Monte Carlo simulations. In addition to ferromagnetic, planar spiral and flux states, the model hosts skyrmion crystal and classical spin-liquid states characterized, respectively, by multiple peaks and a diffuse ring …
35 years after its synthesis magnetic observables are calculated for the first time for the molecular nanomagnet Mn12-acetate using a spin-Hamiltonian that contains all spins. Starting from a very advanced DFT parameterization [Phys. Rev. B 89, 214422] we evaluate magnetization and specific heat for this anisotropic system of 12 manganese ions with a staggering Hilbert space dimension of 100,000,000 using the Finite-Temperature Lanczos Method.
We introduce several exact models for SU(3) spin chains: (1) a translationally invariant parent Hamiltonian involving four-site interactions for the trimer chain, with a three-fold degenerate ground state. We provide numerical evidence that the elementary excitations of this model transform under representation 3bar of SU(3) if the original spins of the model transform under rep. 3. (2) a family of parent Hamiltonians for valence bond solids of SU(3) chains with spin reps. 6, 10, and 8 on each lattice site. We argue that of these three models, only the latter two exhibit spinon confinement and…
We demonstrate how electric fields with arbitrary time profile can be used to control the time-dependent parameters of spin and orbital exchange Hamiltonians. Analytic expressions for the exchange constants are derived from a time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, and the validity of the resulting effective Hamiltonian is verified for the case of a quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard model, by comparing to the results of a full nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory simulation. The ability to manipulate Hamiltonians with arbitrary time-dependent fields, beyond the paradigm of Floqu…
Motivated by recent work on Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin systems on various lattices made up of triangles, we examine the low-energy properties of a chain of antiferromagnetically coupled triangles of half-odd-integer spins. We derive the low-energy effective Hamiltonian to second order in the ratio of the coupling J_2 between triangles to the coupling J_1 within each triangle. The effective Hamiltonian contains four states for each triangle which are given by the products of spin-1/2 states with the states of a pseudospin-1/2. We compare the results obtained by exact diagonalization of t…
We derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for the one-dimensional half-filled tetramerized ionic-Hubbard model in the limit of strong on-site repulsion. We show that the effective Hamiltonian which describes the low-energy spin sector of the model is a spin S=1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian with alternating nearest-neighbour exchange.
Recently, Li {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 107}, 060501 (2011)] have demonstrated that topologically protected measurement-based quantum computation can be implemented on the thermal state of a nearest-neighbor two-body Hamiltonian with spin-2 and spin-3/2 particles provided that the temperature is smaller than a critical value, namely, threshold temperature. Here we show that the thermal state of a nearest-neighbor two-body Hamiltonian, which consists of only spin-3/2 particles, allows us to perform topologically protected measurement-based quantum computation. The threshold temperature…
We search for short-range Hamiltonians of finite spin-1 kagome systems, maximizing the overlaps with lattice Moore-Read states. Our starting point is an exact, long-range parent Hamiltonian for such a state on a finite plane, obtained from conformal field theory. A truncation procedure is applied to it, which retains only short-range terms and makes it easy to define the Hamiltonian on a torus. Finally, the remaining coefficients are optimized, to yield maximized overlaps between exact diagonalization results and model ground states. In the best cases, these overlaps exceed 0.9 and 0.8 for the…
We propose a class of projected BCS wave functions and derive their parent spin Hamiltonians. These wave functions can be formulated as infinite Matrix Product States constructed by chiral correlators of Majorana fermions. In 1D, the spin Hamiltonians can be viewed as SO(n) generalizations of Haldane-Shastry models. We numerically compute the spin-spin correlation functions and Renyi entropies for n=5 and 6. Together with the results for n=3 and 4, we conclude that these states are critical and their low-energy effective theory is the SO(n)_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten model. In 2D, we show that the p…
We derive the spin Hamiltonian for the quantum spin liquid Na4Ir3O8, and then estimate the direct and superexchange contributions between near neighbor iridium ions using a tight binding parametrization of the electronic structure. We find a magnitude of the exchange interaction comparable to experiment for a reasonable value of the on-site Coulomb repulsion. For one of the two tight binding parametrizations we have studied, the direct exchange term, which is isotropic, dominates the total exchange. This provides support for those theories proposed to describe this novel quantum spin liquid th…
We consider Mott insulators driven by periodic coherent laser radiation, using both single orbital and multi-orbital models, noting that the latter is of more interest in solid state systems. We derive general expressions for the resulting periodically driven spin models and spin-orbital models using time-dependent perturbation theory. First, we show that the effective exchange interactions of the Floquet Hamiltonians are highly tunable by the frequency, amplitude, and polarization of the laser. Second, we take the effect of finite bandwidth of excitations into account and study possible heati…
We consider bipartite SU($N$) spin Hamiltonians with a fundamental representation on one sublattice and a conjugate to fundamental on the other sublattice. By mapping these antiferromagnets to certain classical loop models in one higher dimension, we provide a practical strategy to write down a large family of SU($N$) symmetric spin Hamiltonians that satisfy Marshall's sign condition. This family includes all previously known sign-free SU($N$) spin models in this representation and in addition provides a large set of new models that are Marshall positive and can hence be studied efficiently wi…
A spin liquid is a new state of matter with topological order where the spin moments continue to fluctuate coherently down to the lowest temperatures rather than develop static long-range magnetic order as found in conventional magnets. For spin liquid behavior to arise in a material the magnetic Hamiltonian must be "frustrated" where the combination of lattice geometry, interactions and anisotropies gives rise to competing spin arrangements in the ground state. Theoretical Hamiltonians which produce spin liquids are spin ice, the Kitaev honeycomb model and the Heisenberg kagome antiferromagne…
We present magnetization measurements on oriented powder of ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ along and perpendicular to the orienting field. We find a dramatic difference in the magnetization between the two directions. It is biggest at low measurement fields $H$ or high temperatures. We show that the difference at high temperatures must emerge from Ising-like exchange anisotropy. This allows us to explain muon spin rotation data at $T\to 0$ in terms of an exotic ferromagnetic ground state.
Topological properties of a certain class of spinless three-band Hamiltonians are shown to be summed up by the Skyrmion number in momentum space, analogous to the case of two-band Hamiltonian. Topological tight-binding Hamiltonian on a Kagome lattice is analyzed with this view. When such a Hamiltonian is "folded", the two bands with opposite Chern numbers merge into a degenerate band exhibiting non-Abelian gauge connection. Conserved pseudo-spin current operator can be constructed in this case and used to compute the pseudo-spin Hall conductance. Our model Hamiltonians belong to the symmetry c…
Within the framework of periodic asymmetric Anderson model for Kondo isoulators an effective singlet-triplet Hamiltonian with indirect antiferromagnetic f-f exchange interaction is introduced which allows to study analytically the dynamic magnetic susceptibilities of f-electrons. The approach allows to describe the three-level spin excitation spectrum with a specific dispersion in $YbB_{12}$. Distinctive feature of the consideration is the introduction of small radius singlet and triplet collective f-d excitations which at movement on a lattice form low - and high-energy spin bands.
We consider the mapping of tight-binding electronic structure theory to a local spin Hamiltonian, based on the adiabatic approximation for spin degrees of freedom in itinerant-electron systems. Local spin Hamiltonians are introduced in order to describe the energy landscape of small magnetic fluctuations, locally around a given spin configuration. They are designed for linear response near a given magnetic state and in general insufficient to capture arbitrarily strong deviations of spin configurations from the equilibrium. In order to achieve this mapping, we include a linear term in the loca…
We derive a universal Hamiltonian for a quantum dot in the presence of spin-orbit interaction in the symmetry limits of a strong spin-dependent Aharonov-Bohm-like term. We also derive a closed expression for the conductance through such a dot, and use it to study the effects of spin-orbit on the conductance peak statistics in the presence of an exchange interaction. For a realistic strength of the exchange interaction, we find that the width of the peak-spacing distribution is sensitive to spin-orbit coupling only in the absence of an orbital magnetic field. We also find that spin-orbit coupli…
We study a mesoscopic interacting quantum dot described by the "universal Hamiltonian" that is coupled to a Kondo spin. The ferromagnetic exchange interaction within the dot leads to a stepwise increase of the ground state spin; this Stoner staircase is modified non-trivially by the Kondo interaction. We find that the spin-transition steps move to lower values of the exchange coupling for weak Kondo interaction, but shift back up for sufficiently strong Kondo coupling. The problem is solved numerically by diagonalizing the system Hamiltonian in a customized good-spin basis and analytically in …
Double perovskites like Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ are materials with half-metallic ground states and ferrimagnetic T$_{\rm{c}}$'s well above room temperature. This paper is the second of our comprehensive theory for half metallic double perovskites. Here we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the Fe core spins by "integrating out" the itinerant Mo electrons and obtain an unusual double square-root form of the spin-spin interaction. We validate the classical spin Hamiltonian by comparing its results with those of the full quantum treatment presented in the companion paper "Theory of Half-Metallic Double …
We introduce a Hamiltonian for two interacting $su(2)$ spins. We use a mean-field analysis and exact Bethe ansatz results to investigate the ground-state properties of the system in the classical limit, defined as the limit of infinite spin (or highest weight). Complementary insights are provided through investigation of the energy gap, ground-state fidelity, and ground-state entanglement, which are numerically computed for particular parameter values. Despite the simplicity of the model, a rich array of ground-state features are uncovered. Finally, we discuss how this model may be seen as an …
We consider a Kondo spin that is coupled antiferromagnetically to a large chaotic quantum dot. Such a dot is described by the so-called universal Hamiltonian and its electrons are interacting via a ferromagnetic exchange interaction. We derive an effective Hamiltonian in the limit of strong Kondo coupling, where the screened Kondo spin effectively removes one electron from the dot. We find that the exchange coupling constant in this reduced dot (with one less electron) is renormalized and that new interaction terms appear beyond the conventional terms of the strong-coupling limit. The eigenene…
