In most existing learning systems, images are typically viewed as 2D pixel arrays. However, in another paradigm gaining popularity, a 2D image is represented as an implicit neural representation (INR) - an MLP that predicts an RGB pixel value given its (x,y) coordinate. In this paper, we propose two novel architectural techniques for building INR-based image decoders: factorized multiplicative modulation and multi-scale INRs, and use them to build a state-of-the-art continuous image GAN. Previous attempts to adapt INRs for image generation were limited to MNIST-like datasets and do not scale to complex real-world data. Our proposed INR-GAN architecture improves the performance of continuous image generators by several times, greatly reducing the gap between continuous image GANs and pixel-based ones. Apart from that, we explore several exciting properties of the INR-based decoders, like out-of-the-box superresolution, meaningful image-space interpolation, accelerated inference of low-resolution images, an ability to extrapolate outside of image boundaries, and strong geometric prior. Deep learning models are found to be vulnerable to adversarial examples, as wrong predictions can be caused by small perturbation in input for deep learning models. Most of the existing works of adversarial image generation try to achieve attacks for most models, while few of them make efforts on guaranteeing the perceptual quality of the adversarial examples. High quality adversarial examples matter for many applications, especially for the privacy preserving. In this work, we develop a framework based on the Minimum Noticeable Difference (MND) concept to generate adversarial privacy preservi…
Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks are known to be difficult to train, especially when the conditions are continuous and high-dimensional. To partially alleviate this difficulty, we propose a simple generator regularization term on the GAN generator loss in the form of Lipschitz penalty. Thus, when the generator is fed with neighboring conditions in the continuous space, the regularization term will leverage the neighbor information and push the generator to generate samples that have similar conditional distributions for each neighboring condition. We analyze the effect of the propos…

In this paper we introduce Local Logo Generative Adversarial Network (LL-GAN) that uses regional features extracted from Faster R-CNN for logo generation. We demonstrate the strength of this approach by training the framework on a small style-rich dataset of real heavy metal logos to generate new ones. LL-GAN achieves Inception Score of 5.29 and Frechet Inception Distance of 223.94, improving on state-of-the-art models StyleGAN2 and Self-Attention GAN.
Recent studies on the adversarial vulnerability of neural networks have shown that models trained with the objective of minimizing an upper bound on the worst-case loss over all possible adversarial perturbations improve robustness against adversarial attacks. Beside exploiting adversarial training framework, we show that by enforcing a Deep Neural Network (DNN) to be linear in transformed input and feature space improves robustness significantly. We also demonstrate that by augmenting the objective function with Local Lipschitz regularizer boost robustness of the model further. Our method out…

We present LR-GAN: an adversarial image generation model which takes scene structure and context into account. Unlike previous generative adversarial networks (GANs), the proposed GAN learns to generate image background and foregrounds separately and recursively, and stitch the foregrounds on the background in a contextually relevant manner to produce a complete natural image. For each foreground, the model learns to generate its appearance, shape and pose. The whole model is unsupervised, and is trained in an end-to-end manner with gradient descent methods. The experiments demonstrate that LR…

We explore recurrent encoder multi-decoder neural network architectures for semi-supervised sequence classification and reconstruction. We find that the use of multiple reconstruction modules helps models generalize in a classification task when only a small amount of labeled data is available, which is often the case in practice. Such models provide useful high-level representations of motions allowing clustering, searching and faster labeling of new sequences. We also propose a new, realistic partitioning of a well-known, high quality motion-capture dataset for better evaluations. We further…
Building footprint information is an essential ingredient for 3-D reconstruction of urban models. The automatic generation of building footprints from satellite images presents a considerable challenge due to the complexity of building shapes. In this work, we have proposed improved generative adversarial networks (GANs) for the automatic generation of building footprints from satellite images. We used a conditional GAN with a cost function derived from the Wasserstein distance and added a gradient penalty term. The achieved results indicated that the proposed method can significantly improve …
Text-guided image generation models can be prompted to generate images using nonce words adversarially designed to robustly evoke specific visual concepts. Two approaches for such generation are introduced: macaronic prompting, which involves designing cryptic hybrid words by concatenating subword units from different languages; and evocative prompting, which involves designing nonce words whose broad morphological features are similar enough to that of existing words to trigger robust visual associations. The two methods can also be combined to generate images associated with more specific vi…

The advancement in technology and deep learning in particular, has caught the attention of many researchers trying to investigate whether art generation is possible by computers and algorithms. Using generative adversarial networks (GANs), applications such as synthesizing photorealistic human faces and creating captions automatically from images were realized. This survey takes a comprehensive look at the recent works using GANs…
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have obtained extraordinary success in the generation of realistic images, a domain where a lower pixel-level accuracy is acceptable. We study the problem, not yet tackled in the literature, of generating semantic images starting from a prior distribution. Intuitively this problem can be approached using standard methods and architectures. However, a better-suited approach is needed to avoid generating blurry, hallucinated and thus unusable images since tasks like semantic segmentation require pixel-level exactness. In this work, we present a novel archit…

Significant progress has been made by the advances in Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for image generation. However, there lacks enough understanding of how a realistic image is generated by the deep representations of GANs from a random vector. This chapter gives a summary of recent works on interpreting deep generative models. The methods are categorized into the supervised, the unsupervised, and the embedding-guided approaches. We will see how the human-understandable concepts that emerge in the learned representation can be identified and used for interactive image generation and ed…

Autoregressive models recently achieved comparable results versus state-of-the-art Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) with the help of Vector Quantized Variational AutoEncoders (VQ-VAE). However, autoregressive models have several limitations such as exposure bias and their training objective does not guarantee visual fidelity. To address these limitations, we propose to use Reinforced Adversarial Learning (RAL) based on policy gradient optimization for autoregressive models. By applying RAL, we enable a similar process for training and testing to address the exposure bias issue. In additi…
Generative models have recently received renewed attention as a result of adversarial learning. Generative adversarial networks consist of samples generation model and a discrimination model able to distinguish between genuine and synthetic samples. In combination with convolutional (for the discriminator) and de-convolutional (for the generator) layers, they are particularly suitable for image generation, especially of natural scenes. However, the presence of fully connected layers adds global dependencies in the generated images. This may lead to high and global variations in the generated s…

Face aging is the task aiming to translate the faces in input images to designated ages. To simplify the problem, previous methods have limited themselves only able to produce discrete age groups, each of which consists of ten years. Consequently, the exact ages of the translated results are unknown and it is unable to obtain the faces of different ages within groups. To this end, we propose the continuous face aging generative adversarial networks (CFA-GAN). Specifically, to make the continuous aging feasible, we propose to decompose image features into two orthogonal features: the identity a…
Conditional domain generation is a good way to interactively control sample generation process of deep generative models. However, once a conditional generative model has been created, it is often expensive to allow it to adapt to new conditional controls, especially the network structure is relatively deep. We propose a conditioned latent domain transfer framework across latent spaces of unconditional variational autoencoders(VAE). With this framework, we can allow unconditionally trained VAEs to generate images in its domain with conditionals provided by a latent representation of another do…
Automatic mesh-based shape generation is of great interest across a wide range of disciplines, from industrial design to gaming, computer graphics and various other forms of digital art. While most traditional methods focus on primitive based model generation, advances in deep learning made it possible to learn 3-dimensional geometric shape representations in an end-to-end manner. However, most current deep learning based frameworks focus on the representation and generation of voxel and point-cloud based shapes, making it not directly applicable to design and graphics communities. This study …

Cross-view image generation has been recently proposed to generate images of one view from another dramatically different view. In this paper, we investigate exocentric (third-person) view to egocentric (first-person) view image generation. This is a challenging task since egocentric view sometimes is remarkably different from exocentric view. Thus, transforming the appearances across the two views is a non-trivial task. To this end, we propose a novel Parallel Generative Adversarial Network (P-GAN) with a novel cross-cycle loss to learn the shared information for generating egocentric images …
We introduce the "adversarial code learning" (ACL) module that improves overall image generation performance to several types of deep models. Instead of performing a posterior distribution modeling in the pixel spaces of generators, ACLs aim to jointly learn a latent code with another image encoder/inference net, with a prior noise as its input. We conduct the learning in an adversarial learning process, which bears a close resemblance to the original GAN but again shifts the learning from image spaces to prior and latent code spaces. ACL is a portable module that brings up much more flexibili…

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have recently achieved great success in many tasks, which encourages DNNs to be widely used as a machine learning service in model sharing scenarios. However, attackers can easily generate adversarial examples with a small perturbation to fool the DNN models to predict wrong labels. To improve the robustness of shared DNN models against adversarial attacks, we propose a novel method called Latent Adversarial Defence (LAD). The proposed LAD method improves the robustness of a DNN model through adversarial training on generated adversarial examples. Different from pop…

G-TCAS framework was tested on a dataset of 117 users who interacted with a smartphone and tablet pair. On average, the increase in the false accept rates (FARs) for V-TCAS was much higher (22%) than G-TCAS (13%) for the smartphone. Likewise, the increase in the FARs for V-TCAS was 25% compa…
Given the three dimensional complexity of a video signal, training a robust and diverse GAN based video generative model is onerous due to large stochasticity involved in data space. Learning disentangled representations of the data help to improve robustness and provide control in the sampling process. For video generation, there is a recent progress in this area by considering motion and appearance as orthogonal information and designing architectures that efficiently disentangle them. These approaches rely on handcrafting architectures that impose structural priors on the generator to decom…

This paper describes a new approach for training generative adversarial networks (GAN) to understand the detailed 3D shape of objects. While GANs have been used in this domain previously, they are notoriously hard to train, especially for the complex joint data distribution over 3D objects of many categories and orientations. Our method extends previous work by employing the Wasserstein distance normalized with gradient penalization as a training objective. This enables improved generation from the joint object shape distribution. Our system can also reconstruct 3D shape from 2D images and per…

Despite the success of deep learning across various domains, it remains vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Although many existing adversarial attack methods achieve high success rates, they typically rely on $\ell_{p}$-norm perturbation constraints, which do not align with human perceptual capabilities. Consequently, researchers have shifted their focus toward generating natural, unrestricted adversarial examples (UAEs). GAN-based approaches suffer from inherent limitations, such as poor image quality due to instability and mode collapse. Meanwhile, diffusion models have been employed for UAE …

Generative modeling over natural images is one of the most fundamental machine learning problems. However, few modern generative models, including Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Nets (WGANs), are studied on manifold-valued images that are frequently encountered in real-world applications. To fill the gap, this paper first formulates the problem of generating manifold-valued images and exploits three typical instances: hue-saturation-value (HSV) color image generation, chromaticity-brightness (CB) color image generation, and diffusion-tensor (DT) image generation. For the proposed generativ…

The vulnerability of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to adversarial examples has been confirmed. Existing adversarial defenses primarily aim at preventing adversarial examples from attacking DNNs successfully, rather than preventing their generation. If the generation of adversarial examples is unregulated, images within reach are no longer secure and pose a threat to non-robust DNNs. Although gradient obfuscation attempts to address this issue, it has been shown to be circumventable. Therefore, we propose a novel adversarial defense mechanism, which is referred to as immune defense and is the exa…

The transferability and robustness of adversarial examples are two practical yet important properties for black-box adversarial attacks. In this paper, we explore effective mechanisms to boost both of them from the perspective of network hierarchy, where a typical network can be hierarchically divided into output stage, intermediate stage and input stage. Since over-specialization of source model, we can hardly improve the transferability and robustness of the adversarial perturbations in the output stage. Therefore, we focus on the intermediate and input stages in this paper and propose a tra…
