Natural language processing (NLP) techniques have become mainstream in the recent decade. Most of these advances are attributed to the processing of a single language. More recently, with the extensive growth of social media platforms focus has shifted to code-mixed text. The code-mixed text comprises text written in more than one language. People naturally tend to combine local language with global languages like English. To process such texts, current NLP techniques are not sufficient. As a first step, the text is processed to identify the language of the words in the text. In this work, we focus on language identification in code-mixed sentences for Hindi-English mixed text. The task of language identification is formulated as a token classification task. In the supervised setting, each word in the sentence has an associated language label. We evaluate different deep learning models and input representation combinations for this task. Mainly, character, sub-word, and word embeddings are considered in combination with CNN and LSTM based models. We show that sub-word representation along with the LSTM model gives the best results. In general sub-word representations perform significantly better than other input representations. We report the best accuracy of 94.52% using a single layer LSTM model on the standard SAIL ICON 2017 test set.

Language identification of social media text has been an interesting problem of study in recent years. Social media messages are predominantly in code mixed in non-English speaking states. Prior knowledge by pre-training contextual embeddings have shown state of the art results for a range of downstream tasks. Recently, models such as BERT have shown that using a large amount of unlabeled data, the pretrained language models are even more beneficial for learning common language representations. Extensive experiments exploiting transfer learning and fine-tuning BERT models to identify language …

Recent advancements in Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models have proved to produce a state of the art results on machine translation for low resource Indian languages. This paper describes the neural machine translation systems for the English-Hindi language presented in AdapMT Shared Task ICON 2020. The shared task aims to build a translation system for Indian languages in specific domains like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Chemistry using a small in-domain parallel corpus. We evaluated the effectiveness of two popular NMT models i.e, LSTM, and Transformer architectures for the English-…
Machine translation (MT) research in Indian languages is still in its infancy. Not much work has been done in proper transliteration of name entities in this domain. In this paper we address this issue. We have used English-Hindi language pair for our experiments and have used a hybrid approach. At first we have processed English words using a rule based approach which extracts individual phonemes from the words and then we have applied statistical approach which converts the English into its equivalent Hindi phoneme and in turn the corresponding Hindi word. Through this approach we have attai…
This paper reports an increment to the state-of-the-art in hate speech detection for English-Hindi code-mixed tweets. We compare three typical deep learning models using domain-specific embeddings. On experimenting with a benchmark dataset of English-Hindi code-mixed tweets, we observe that using domain-specific embeddings results in an improved representation of target groups, and an improved F-score.
In this paper, we present a corpus based study of politeness across two languages-English and Hindi. It studies the politeness in a translated parallel corpus of Hindi and English and sees how politeness in a Hindi text is translated into English. We provide a detailed theoretical background in which the comparison is carried out, followed by a brief description of the translated data within this theoretical model. Since politeness may become one of the major reasons of conflict and misunderstanding, it is a very important phenomenon to be studied and understood cross-culturally, particularly …
The parallel corpus for multilingual NLP tasks, deep learning applications like Statistical Machine Translation Systems is very important. The parallel corpus of Hindi-English language pair available for news translation task till date is of very limited size as per the requirement of the systems are concerned. In this work we have developed an automatic parallel corpus generation system prototype, which creates Hindi-English parallel corpus for news translation task. Further to verify the quality of generated parallel corpus we have experimented by taking various performance metrics and the r…
Evaluation plays a vital role in checking the quality of MT output. It is done either manually or automatically. Manual evaluation is very time consuming and subjective, hence use of automatic metrics is done most of the times. This paper evaluates the translation quality of different MT Engines for Hindi-English (Hindi data is provided as input and English is obtained as output) using various automatic metrics like BLEU, METEOR etc. Further the comparison automatic evaluation results with Human ranking have also been given.

Code-switching occurs when more than one language is mixed in a given sentence or a conversation. This phenomenon is more prominent on social media platforms and its adoption is increasing over time. Therefore code-mixed NLP has been extensively studied in the literature. As pre-trained transformer-based architectures are gaining popularity, we observe that real code-mixing data are scarce to pre-train large language models. We present L3Cube-HingCorpus, the first large-scale real Hindi-English code mixed data in a Roman script. It consists of 52.93M sentences and 1.04B tokens, scraped from Tw…
We present hinglishNorm -- a human annotated corpus of Hindi-English code-mixed sentences for text normalization task. Each sentence in the corpus is aligned to its corresponding human annotated normalized form. To the best of our knowledge, there is no corpus of Hindi-English code-mixed sentences for text normalization task that is publicly available. Our work is the first attempt in this direction. The corpus contains 13494 parallel segments. Further, we present baseline normalization results on this corpus. We obtain a Word Error Rate (WER) of 15.55, BiLingual Evaluation Understudy (BLEU) s…
Language Identification in textual documents is the process of automatically detecting the language contained in a document based on its content. The present Language Identification techniques presume that a document contains text in one of the fixed set of languages, however, this presumption is incorrect when dealing with multilingual document which includes content in more than one possible language. Due to the unavailability of large standard corpora for Hindi-English mixed lingual language processing tasks we propose the language lexicons, a novel kind of lexical database that supports se…

Measuring, evaluating and reducing Gender Bias has come to the forefront with newer and improved language embeddings being released every few months. But could this bias vary from domain to domain? We see a lot of work to study these biases in various embedding models but limited work has been done to debias Indic languages. We aim to measure and study this bias in Hindi language, which is a higher-order language (gendered) with reference to English, a lower-order language. To achieve this, we study the variations across domains to quantify if domain embeddings allow us some insight into Gende…
In this paper we explore various parameter settings of the state-of-art Statistical Machine Translation system to improve the quality of the translation for a `distant' language pair like English-Hindi. We proposed new techniques for efficient reordering. A slight improvement over the baseline is reported using these techniques. We also show that a simple pre-processing step can improve the quality of the translation significantly.
We present findings from a first in-depth post-editing effort estimation study in the English-Hindi direction along multiple effort indicators. We conduct a controlled experiment involving professional translators, who complete assigned tasks alternately, in a translation from scratch and a post-edit condition. We find that post-editing reduces translation time (by 63%), utilizes fewer keystrokes (by 59%), and decreases the number of pauses (by 63%) when compared to translating from scratch. We further verify the quality of translations thus produced via a human evaluation task in which we do …
Multilingual Machine Comprehension (MMC) is a Question-Answering (QA) sub-task that involves quoting the answer for a question from a given snippet, where the question and the snippet can be in different languages. Recently released multilingual variant of BERT (m-BERT), pre-trained with 104 languages, has performed well in both zero-shot and fine-tuned settings for multilingual tasks; however, it has not been used for English-Hindi MMC yet. We, therefore, present in this article, our experiments with m-BERT for MMC in zero-shot, mono-lingual (e.g. Hindi Question-Hindi Snippet) and cross-lingu…

With language models being deployed increasingly in the real world, it is essential to address the issue of the fairness of their outputs. The word embedding representations of these language models often implicitly draw unwanted associations that form a social bias within the model. The nature of gendered languages like Hindi, poses an additional problem to the quantification and mitigation of bias, owing to the change in the form of the words in the sentence, based on the gender of the subject. Additionally, there is sparse work done in the realm of measuring and debiasing systems for Indic …
The main issue in Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) is the poor performance of retrieval in terms of average precision when compared to monolingual retrieval performance. The main reasons behind poor performance of CLIR are mismatching of query terms, lexical ambiguity and un-translated query terms. The existing problems of CLIR are needed to be addressed in order to increase the performance of the CLIR system. In this paper, we are putting our effort to solve the given problem by proposed an algorithm for improving the performance of English-Hindi CLIR system. We used all possible c…
Code-switching is a phenomenon of mixing grammatical structures of two or more languages under varied social constraints. The code-switching data differ so radically from the benchmark corpora used in NLP community that the application of standard technologies to these data degrades their performance sharply. Unlike standard corpora, these data often need to go through additional processes such as language identification, normalization and/or back-transliteration for their efficient processing. In this paper, we investigate these indispensable processes and other problems associated with synta…

The study is based on a corpus of slightly over 10 hours of political discourse and includes debates on news channel and political speeches. Using this study, we develop two automatic classification systems for identifying aggression in English and Hindi speech, based solely on an acoustic model. The Hindi classifier, trained using 50 hours of annotated s…
In multilingual societies like India, code-mixed social media texts comprise the majority of the Internet. Detecting the sentiment of the code-mixed user opinions plays a crucial role in understanding social, economic and political trends. In this paper, we propose an ensemble of character-trigrams based LSTM model and word-ngrams based Multinomial Naive Bayes (MNB) model to identify the sentiments of Hindi-English (Hi-En) code-mixed data. The ensemble model combines the strengths of rich sequential patterns from the LSTM model and polarity of keywords from the probabilistic ngram model to ide…
While language competition models of diachronic language shift are increasingly sophisticated, drawing on sociolinguistic components like variable language prestige, distance from language centers and intermediate bilingual transitionary populations, in one significant way they fall short. They fail to consider contact-based outcomes resulting in mixed language practices, e.g. outcome scenarios such as creoles or unmarked code switching as an emergent communicative norm. On these lines something very interesting is uncovered in India, where traditionally there have been monolingual Hindi speak…
The text generated on social media platforms is essentially a mixed lingual text. The mixing of language in any form produces considerable amount of difficulty in language processing systems. Moreover, the advancements in language processing research depends upon the availability of standard corpora. The development of mixed lingual Indian Named Entity Recognition (NER) systems are facing obstacles due to unavailability of the standard evaluation corpora. Such corpora may be of mixed lingual nature in which text is written using multiple languages predominantly using a single script only. The …

Social media has become one of the main channels for peo- ple to communicate and share their views with the society. We can often detect from these views whether the person is in favor, against or neu- tral towards a given topic. These opinions from social media are very useful for various companies. We present a new dataset that consists of 3545 English-Hindi code-mixed tweets with opinion towards Demoneti- sation that was implemented in India in 2016 which was followed by a large countrywide debate. We present a baseline supervised classification system for stance detection developed using t…
Code-mixing is a phenomenon which arises mainly in multilingual societies. Multilingual people, who are well versed in their native languages and also English speakers, tend to code-mix using English-based phonetic typing and the insertion of anglicisms in their main language. This linguistic phenomenon poses a great challenge to conventional NLP domains such as Sentiment Analysis, Machine Translation, and Text Summarization, to name a few. In this work, we focus on working out a plausible solution to the domain of Code-Mixed Sentiment Analysis. This work was done as participation in the SemEv…

End-to-end (E2E) models have been explored for large speech corpora and have been found to match or outperform traditional pipeline-based systems in some languages. However, most prior work on end-to-end models use speech corpora exceeding hundreds or thousands of hours. In this study, we explore end-to-end models for code-switched Hindi-English language with less than 50 hours of data. We utilize two specific measures to improve network performance in the low-resource setting, namely multi-task learning (MTL) and balancing the corpus to deal with the inherent class imbalance problem i.e. the …
This paper considers the problem for estimating the quality of machine translation outputs which are independent of human intervention and are generally addressed using machine learning techniques. There are various measures through which a machine learns translations quality. Automatic Evaluation metrics produce good co-relation at corpus level but cannot produce the same results at the same segment or sentence level. In this paper 16 features are extracted from the input sentences and their translations and a quality score is obtained based on Bayesian inference produced from training data.
In this paper we present an approach for estimating the quality of machine translation system. There are various methods for estimating the quality of output sentences, but in this paper we focus on Naïve Bayes classifier to build model using features which are extracted from the input sentences. These features are used for finding the likelihood of each of the sentences of the training data which are then further used for determining the scores of the test data. On the basis of these scores we determine the class labels of the test data.

Neural Machine Translation (NMT) is a predominant machine translation technology nowadays because of its end-to-end trainable flexibility. However, NMT still struggles to translate properly in low-resource settings specifically on distant language pairs. One way to overcome this is to use the information from other modalities if available. The idea is that despite differences in languages, both the source and target language speakers see the same thing and the visual representation of both the source and target is the same, which can positively assist the system. Multimodal information can hel…
