Improvements in computing performance have significantly slowed down over the past few years owing to the intrinsic limitations of computing hardware. However, the demand for data computing has increased exponentially. To solve this problem, tremendous attention has been focused on the continuous scaling of Moore's Law as well as the advanced non-von Neumann computing architecture. A rich variety of unconventional computing paradigms has been raised with the rapid development of nanoscale devices. Magnetic skyrmions, spin swirling quasiparticles, have been endowed with great expectations for unconventional computing due to their potential as the smallest information carriers by exploiting their physics and dynamics. In this paper, we provide an overview of the recent progress of skyrmion-based unconventional computing from a joint device-application perspective. This paper aims to build up a panoramic picture, analyze the remaining challenges, and most importantly to shed light on the outlook of skyrmion based unconventional computing for interdisciplinary researchers.
Skyrmions with the topological number $Q$ equal an integer larger than 1 are called high-topological-number skyrmions or high-$Q$ skyrmions. In this work, we theoretically study the topological Hall effect in square-lattice high-$Q$ skyrmion crystals (SkX) with $Q=2$ and $Q=3$. As a result of the emergent magnetic field, Landau-level-like electronic band structure gives rise to quantized Hall conductivity when the Fermi energy is within the gaps between adjacent single band or multiple bands intertwined. We found that different from conventional ($Q=1$) SkX the Hall quantization number increas…
The interplay of topological characteristics in real space and reciprocal space can lead to the emergence of unconventional topological phases. In this Letter, we implement a novel mechanism for generating higher-Chern flat bands on the basis of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) coupled to topological magnetic structures in the form of the skyrmion lattice. In particular, we discover a scenario for generating $|C|=2$ dispersionless electronic bands when the skyrmion periodicity and the moiré periodicity are matched. Following the Wilczek argument, the statistics of the charge-carrying excitations…
Magnetic skyrmions are emerging as key elements of unconventional operations having unique properties such as small size and low current manipulation. In particular, it is possible to design skyrmion-based neurons and synapses for neuromorphic computing in devices where skyrmions move along the current direction (zero skyrmion Hall angle). Here, we show that, for a given graph, skyrmions can be used in optimization problems facing the calculation of the shortest path. Our tests show a solution with the same path length as computed with Algorithm. In addition, we also discuss how skyrmions act …
Antiferromagnets are promising materials for future spintronic applications due to their unique properties including zero stray fields, robustness versus external magnetic fields and ultrafast dynamics, which have attracted extensive interest in recent years. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of isolated skyrmions in an antiferromagnetic nanotrack with a voltage-gated region. It is found that the skyrmion can be jointly controlled by the driving current and the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient. We further propose a design of logic computing gates based on the manipulatio…
Reservoir Computing is a type of recursive neural network commonly used for recognizing and predicting spatio-temporal events relying on a complex hierarchy of nested feedback loops to generate a memory functionality. The Reservoir Computing paradigm does not require any knowledge of the reservoir topology or node weights for training purposes and can therefore utilize naturally existing networks formed by a wide variety of physical processes. Most efforts prior to this have focused on utilizing memristor techniques to implement recursive neural networks. This paper examines the potential of s…
The static and dynamic properties of skyrmions have recently received increased attention due to the potential application of skyrmions as information carriers and for unconventional computing. While the current-driven dynamics has been explored deeply, both theoretically and experimentally, the theory of temperature gradient-induced dynamics - Skyrmion-Caloritronics - is still at its early stages of development. Here, we move the topic forward by identifying the role of entropic torques due to the temperature dependence of magnetic parameters. Our results show that, skyrmions move towards hig…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological quasiparticles whose non-volatility, detectability, and mobility make them exciting candidates for low-energy computing. Previous works have demonstrated the feasibility and efficiency of current-driven skyrmions in cascaded logic structures inspired by reversible computing. As skyrmions can be propelled through the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect with much greater efficiency, this work proposes a VCMA-based skyrmion propagation mechanism that drastically reduces energy dissipation. Additionally, we demonstrate the functionality of skyrmi…
Thermally activated processes are key to understanding the dynamics of physical systems. Thermal diffusion of (quasi-)particles for instance not only yields information on transport and dissipation processes but is also an exponentially sensitive tool to reveal emergent system properties and enable novel applications such as probabilistic computing. Here we probe the thermal dynamics of topologically stabilized magnetic skyrmion quasi-particles. We demonstrate in a specially tailored low pinning multilayer material system pure skyrmion diffusion that dominates the dynamics. Finally, we analyse…
The Reservoir Computing (RC) paradigm posits that sufficiently complex physical systems can be used to massively simplify pattern recognition tasks and nonlinear signal prediction. This work demonstrates how random topological magnetic textures present sufficiently complex resistance responses for the implementation of RC as applied to A/C current pulses. In doing so, we stress how the applicability of this paradigm hinges on very general dynamical properties which are satisfied by a large class of physical systems where complexity can be put to computational use. By harnessing the complex res…
Novel computational paradigms may provide the blueprint to help solving the time and energy limitations that we face with our modern computers, and provide solutions to complex problems more efficiently (with reduced time, power consumption and/or less device footprint) than is currently possible with standard approaches. Spintronics offers a promising basis for the development of efficient devices and unconventional operations for at least three main reasons: (i) the low-power requirements of spin-based devices, i.e., requiring no standby power for operation and the possibility to write infor…
Topological spin textures in an itinerant ferromagnet, SrRuO$_3$ is studied combining Hall transport measurements and numerical simulations. We observe characteristic signatures of the Topological Hall Effect associated with skyrmions. A relatively large thickness of our films and absence of heavy metal layers make the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction an unlikely source of these topological spin textures. Additionally, the transport anomalies exhibit an unprecedented robustness to magnetic field tilting and temperature. Our numerical simulations suggest that this unconventional be…
Low-energy random number generation is critical for many emerging computing schemes proposed to complement or replace von Neumann architectures. However, current random number generators are always associated with an energy cost that is prohibitive for these computing schemes. In this paper, we introduce random number bit generation based on specific nanodevices: superparamagnetic tunnel junctions. We experimentally demonstrate high quality random bit generation that represents orders-of-magnitude improvements in energy efficiency compared to current solutions. We show that the random generati…
The topologically protected magnetic spin configurations known as skyrmions offer promising applications due to their stability, mobility and localization. In this work, we emphasize how to leverage the thermally driven dynamics of an ensemble of such particles to perform computing tasks. We propose a device employing a skyrmion gas to reshuffle a random signal into an uncorrelated copy of itself. This is demonstrated by modelling the ensemble dynamics in a collective coordinate approach where skyrmion-skyrmion and skyrmion-boundary interactions are accounted for phenomenologically. Our numeri…
Brownian computing exploits thermal motion of discrete signal carriers (tokens) for computations. In this paper we address two major challenges that hinder competitive realizations of circuits and application of Brownian token-based computing in actual devices for instance based on magnetic skyrmions. To overcome the problem that crossings generate for the fabrication of circuits, we design a crossing-free layout for a composite half-adder module. This layout greatly simplifies experimental implementations as wire crossings are effectively avoided. Additionally, our design is shorter to speed …
Solitonic magnetic excitations such as domain walls and, specifically, skyrmionics enable the possibility of compact, high density, ultrafast,all-electronic, low-energy devices, which is the basis for the emerging area of skyrmionics. The topological winding of skyrmion spins affects their overall lifetime, energetics and dynamical behavior. In this review, we discuss skyrmionics in the context of the present day solid state memory landscape, and show how their size, stability and mobility can be controlled by material engineering, as well as how they can be nucleated and detected. Ferrimagnet…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale whirls of magnetism that can be propagated with electrical currents. The repulsion between skyrmions inspires their use for reversible computing based on the elastic billiard ball collisions proposed for conservative logic in 1982. Here we evaluate the logical and physical reversibility of this skyrmion logic paradigm, as well as the limitations that must be addressed before dissipation-free computation can be realized.
Magnetic skyrmions are exciting candidates for energy-efficient computing due to their non-volatility, detectability, and mobility. A recent proposal within the paradigm of reversible computing enables large-scale circuits composed ofdirectly-cascaded skyrmion logic gates, but it is limited by the manufacturing difficulty and energy costs associated withthe use of notches for skyrmion synchronization. To overcome these challenges, we therefore propose a skyrmion logicsynchronized via modulation of voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA). In addition to demonstrating theprinciple of VCMA s…
Magnetic skyrmion is a promising building block for developing information storage and computing devices. It can be stabilized in a ferromagnetic thin film with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The moving ferromagnetic skyrmion may show the skyrmion Hall effect, that is, the skyrmion shows a transverse shift when it is driven by a spin current. Here, we numerically and theoretically study the current-driven dynamics of a ferromagnetic nanoscale skyrmion in the presence of the anisotropic DMI, where the skyrmion has an elliptical shape. The skyrmion Hall effect of the elliptical sky…
Computational reversibility is necessary for quantum computation and inspires the development of computing systems in which information carriers are conserved as they flow through a circuit. While conservative logic provides an exciting vision for reversible computing with no energy dissipation, the large dimensions of information carriers in previous realizations detract from the system efficiency, and nanoscale conservative logic remains elusive. We therefore propose a non-volatile reversible computing system in which the information carriers are magnetic skyrmions, topologically-stable magn…

However, concepts proposed so far suffer from reliability issues as well as inefficient conversion of magnetic information to electrical signals. In this paper, we propose a logic-in-memory device which exploits skyrmion confinement and channeling using anisotropy energy barriers to achieve reliable data storage and synchronous shift in racetracks combined with c…

Topological spin textures can serve as non-volatile information carriers. Here we study the current-induced dynamics of an isolated magnetic skyrmion on a nanoscale square-grid pinning pattern formed by orthogonal defect lines with reduced magnetic anisotropy. The skyrmion on the square grid can be pixelated with a quantized size of the grid. We demonstrate that the position, size, and shape of skyrmion on the square grid are electrically configurable. The skyrmion center is quantized to be on the grid and the skyrmion may show a hopping motion instead of a continuous motion. We find that the …
Magnetic skyrmions and skyrmion bags are nano-scale spin textures whose stability, size and ease of manipulation make them strong contenders for next generation data and logic applications. Skyrmion bags are composite skyrmions of any integer topological degree and this means they have emergent properties not present in unitary degree skyrmions. Here we present models and theoretical descriptions demonstrating the process of skyrmionic division where a skyrmion or skyrmion bag can be divided into two or more skyrmionic structures. This exciting result could pave the way to entirely new types o…
We study the impact of an exchange-reducing defect on a skyrmion for a thin film of finite thickness. Attraction of the skyrmion to a defect is demonstrated in a lattice model by computing the micromagnetic energy accounting for the exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, magnetic anisotropy, and dipole-dipole coupling. The spiraling dynamics of the skyrmion towards the defect is illustrated by solving numerically the full Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations on a lattice and, independently, the Thiele equation, with the two methods in agreement with each other. We find that the skyrmion def…
Exotic spin textures viz. chiral domain wall, vortices, skyrmion, skyrmionium, etc. have recently emerged as active field of research because of their potential applications in high density data storage technology and logic gate computing. Magnetic skyrmionium is a skyrmion like soliton, which carries zero topological quantum number. Skyrmioniums are superior to conventional skyrmions in ferromagnets due to their negligible skyrmion hall effect and higher velocity. The physical properties of both skyrmion and skyrmionium have been investigated rigorously in ferromagnetic systems. Recent observ…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates as elementary nanoscale bits in logic-in-memory devices, intrinsically merging high density memory and computing capabilities. Here we exploit the dynamics of skyrmions interacting with anisotropy energy barriers patterned by ion irradiation to design programmable logic gates. Using micromagnetic simulations with experimental parameters, we show that a fine tuning of the barrier height and width allows the selective tunneling of skyrmions between parallel nanotracks triggered by skyrmion-skyrmion interaction. This can be leveraged to design skyrmion …

Magnetic skyrmionium is a skyrmion-like spin texture with nanoscale size and high mobility. It is a topologically trivial but dynamically stable structure, which can be used as a non-volatile information carrier for next-generation spintronic storage and computing devices. Here, we study the dynamics of a skyrmionium driven by the spin torque in a ferrimagnetic nanotrack. It is found that the direction of motion is jointly determined by the internal configuration of a skyrmionium and the spin polarization vector. Besides, the deformation of a skyrmionium induced by the intrinsic skyrmion Hall …
Spin transfer torque (STT) affords magnetic nanodevices the potential to act as memory, computing, and microwave elements operating at ultra-low currents and at a low energy cost. Spin transfer torque is not only effective in manipulating well-known magnetic structures, such as domain walls and vortices, but can also nucleate previously unattainable nano-magnetic objects, such as magnetic droplets and skyrmions. While the droplet and the skyrmion are both solitons, the former is inherently dynamic and non-topological, whereas the latter is static but topologically protected. Here we show that …
