We study the convergence of resistance metrics and resistance forms on a converging sequence of spaces. As an application, we study the existence and uniqueness of self-similar Dirichlet forms on Sierpinski gaskets with added rotated triangles. The fractals depend on a parameter in a continuous way. When the parameter is irrational, the fractal is not post critically finite (p.c.f.), and there are infinitely many ways that two cells intersect. In this case, we will define the Dirichlet form as a limit in some $Γ$-convergence sense of the Dirichlet forms on p.c.f. fractals that approximate it.
We construct a self-similar local regular Dirichlet form on the Sierpiński gasket using $Γ$-convergence of stable-like non-local closed forms. As a continuation of a recent paper by Grigor'yan and the author, we give the first \emph{unified} purely analytic construction of local regular Dirichlet forms that works both on the Sierpiński gasket and the Sierpiński carpet.
We construct equivalent semi-norms of non-local Dirichlet forms on the Sierpiński gasket and apply these semi-norms to a convergence problem and a trace problem. We also construct explicitly a sequence of non-local Dirichlet forms with jumping kernels equivalent to $|x-y|^{-α-β}$ that converges exactly to local Dirichlet form.
This thesis is about local and non-local Dirichlet forms on the Sierpiński gasket and the Sierpiński carpet. We are concerned with the following three problems in analysis on the Sierpiński gasket and the Sierpiński carpet. First, a unified purely \emph{analytic} construction of local regular Dirichlet forms on the Sierpiń-ski gasket and the Sierpiński carpet. We give a purely analytic construction of a self-similar local regular Dirichlet form on the Sierpiński carpet using $Γ$-convergence of stable-like non-local closed forms which gives an answer to an open problem in analysis on fractals. …
Fractal geometry is the study of sets which exhibit the same pattern at multiple scales. Developing tools to study these sets is of great interest. One step towards developing some of these tools is recognizing the duality between topological spaces and commutative $C^\ast$-algebras. When one lifts the commutativity axiom, one gets what are called noncommutative spaces and the study of noncommutative geometry. The tools built to study noncommutative spaces can in fact be used to study fractal sets. In what follows we will use the spectral triples of noncommutative geometry to describe various …
The stretched Sierpinski gasket, SSG for short, is the space obtained by replacing every branching point of the Sierpinski gasket by an interval. It has also been called "deformed Sierpinski gasket" or "Hanoi attractor". As a result, it is the closure of a countable union of intervals and one might expect that a diffusion on SSG is essentially a kind of gluing of the Brownian motions on the intervals. In fact, there have been several works in this direction. There still remains, however, "reminiscence" of the Sierpinski gasket in the geometric structure of SSG and the same should therefore be …
In this paper, we explore some significant properties associated with a fractal operator on the space of all continuous functions defined on the Sierpiński Gasket (SG). We also provide some results related to constrained approximation with fractal polynomials and study the best approximation properties of fractal polynomials defined on the SG. Further we discuss some remarks on the class of polynomials defined on the SG and try to estimate the fractal dimensions of the graph of $α$- fractal function defined on the SG by using the oscillation of functions.
Let $Γ_n$ denote the $n$-th level Sierpiński graph of the Sierpiński gasket $K$. We consider, for any given conductance $(a_0, b_0, c_0)$ on $Γ_0$, the Dirchlet form ${\mathcal E}$ on $K$ obtained from a recursive construction of compatible sequence of conductances $(a_n, b_n, c_n)$ on $Γ_n, n\geq 0$. We prove that there is a dichotomy situation: either $a_0= b_0 =c_0$ and ${\mathcal E}$ is the standard Dirichlet form, or $a_0 >b_0 =c_0$ (or the two symmetric alternatives), and ${\mathcal E}$ is a non-self-similar Dirichlet form independent of $a_0, b_0$. The second situation has also been stu…
In this paper, we study the restrictions of both the harmonic functions and the eigenfunctions of the symmetric Laplacian to edges of pre-gaskets contained in the Sierpinski gasket. For a harmonic function, its restriction to any edge is either monotone or having a single extremum. For an eigenfunction, it may have several local extrema along edges. We prove general criteria, involving the values of any given function at the endpoints and midpoint of any edge, to determine which case it should be, as well as the asymptotic behavior of the restriction near the endpoints. Moreover, for eigenfunc…
We use spectral decimation to provide formulae for computing the harmonic gradients of Laplacian eigenfunctions on the Sierpinski Gasket. These formulae are given in terms of special functions that are defined as infinite products.
We construct a class of singular integral operators associated with homogeneous Calderón-Zygmund standard kernels on $d$-dimensional, $d <1$, Sierpinski gaskets $E_d$. These operators are bounded in $L^2(μ_d)$ and their principal values diverge $μ_d$ almost everywhere, where $μ_d$ is the natural (d-dimensional) measure on $E_d$.
For a family of domains in the Sierpinski gasket, we study harmonic functions of finite energy, characterizing them in terms of their boundary values, and study their normal derivatives on the boundary. We characterize those domains for which there is an extension operator for functions of finite energy. We give an explicit construction of the Green's function for these domains.
This paper studies the size of the minimal gap between any two consecutive eigenvalues in the Dirichlet and in the Neumann spectrum of the standard Laplace operator on the Sierpinski gasket. The main result shows the remarkable fact that this minimal gap is achieved and coincides with the spectral gap. The Dirichlet case is more challenging and requires some key observations in the behavior of the dynamical system that describes the spectrum.
Under certain continuity conditions, we estimate upper and lower box dimension of graph of a function defined on the Sierpinski gasket. We also give an upper bound for Hausdorff dimension and box dimension of graph of function having finite energy. Further, we introduce two sets of definitions of bounded variation for a function defined on the Sierpinski gasket. We show that fractal dimension of graph of a continuous function of bounded variation is log 3/log 2. We also prove that the class of all bounded variation functions is closed under arithmetic operations. Furthermore, we show that ever…
We study the Laplace operator on the Sierpinski gasket with nonlinear Robin boundary conditions. We show that for certain Robin boundary conditions the Laplace operator generates a positive, order preserving, $L^\infty$-contractive semigroup which is sandwiched (in the sense of domination) between the semigroups generated by the Dirichlet-Laplace operator and the Neumann-Laplace operator. We also characterise all local semigroups which are sandwiched between these two extremal semigroups by showing that their generators are Robin-Laplace operators.
We prove versions of the strong Szëgo limit theorem for certain classes of pseudodifferential operators defined on the Sierpiński gasket. Our results used in a fundamental way the existence of localized eigenfunctions for the Laplacian on this fractal.
We study boundary value problems for harmonic functions on certain domains in the level-$l$ Sierpinski gaskets $\mathcal{SG}_l$($l\geq 2$) whose boundaries are Cantor sets. We give explicit analogues of the Poisson integral formula to recover harmonic functions from their boundary values. Three types of domains, the left half domain of $\mathcal{SG}_l$ and the upper and lower domains generated by horizontal cuts of $\mathcal{SG}_l$ are considered at present. We characterize harmonic functions of finite energy and obtain their energy estimates in terms of their boundary values. This paper settl…
For a certain domain $Ω$ in the Sierpinski gasket $\mathcal{SG}$ whose boundary is a line segment, a complete description of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian, with an exact count of dimensions of eigenspaces, under the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions is presented. The method developed in this paper is a weak version of the spectral decimation method due to Fukushima and Shima, since for a lot of "bad" eigenvalues the spectral decimation method can not be used directly. Let $ρ^0(x)$, $ρ^Ω(x)$ be the eigenvalue counting functions of the Laplacian associated to $\mathcal{SG}$ and $Ω$ re…
We provide a definition of integral, along paths in the Sierpinski gasket K, for differential smooth 1-forms associated to the standard Dirichlet form K. We show how this tool can be used to study the potential theory on K. In particular, we prove: i) a de Rham reconstruction of a 1-form from its periods around lacunas in K; ii) a Hodge decomposition of 1-forms with respect to the Hilbertian energy norm; iii) the existence of potentials of smooth 1-forms on a suitable covering space of K. We finally show that this framework provides versions of the de Rham duality theorem for the fractal K.
On the Sierpinski gasket $\mathcal{SG}$, we consider Sobolev spaces $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ associated with the standard Laplacian $Δ$ with order $σ\geq 0$. When $σ\in\mathbb{Z}^+$, $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ consists of functions equipped with $L^2$ norms of the function itself and its Laplacians up to $σ$ order; when $σ\notin \mathbb{Z}^+$, we fill up the gaps between integer orders by using complex interpolation. Let $L^2_{σ, D}(\mathcal{SG})=(I-Δ_D)^{-σ}L^2(\mathcal{SG})$ where $Δ_D$ is the Dirichlet Laplacian associated with $Δ$. Let $\{p_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ be a collection of countably many points l…
We study the analog of power series expansions on the Sierpinski gasket, for analysis based on the Kigami Laplacian. The analog of polynomials are multiharmonic functions, which have previously been studied in connection with Taylor approximations and splines. Here the main technical result is an estimate of the size of the monomials analogous to x^n/n!. We propose a definition of entire analytic functions as functions represented by power series whose coefficients satisfy exponential growth conditions that are stronger than what is required to guarantee uniform convergence. We present a chara…
In this paper, we focus on Strichartz's derivatives, a family of derivatives including the normal derivative, on p.c.f. (post critically finite) fractals, which are defined at vertex points in the graphs that approximate the fractal. We obtain a weak continuity property of the derivatives for functions in the domain of the Laplacian. For a function with zero normal derivative at any fixed vertex, the derivatives, including the normal derivatives of the neighboring vertices will decay to zero. The optimal rates of approximations are described and several non-trivial examples are provided to ill…
The study of Julia sets gives a new and natural way to look at fractals. When mathematicians investigated the special class of Misiurewicz's rational maps, they found out that there is a Julia set which is homeomorphic to a well known fractal, the Sierpinski gasket. In this paper, we apply the method of Kigami to give rise to a new construction of Laplacians on the Sierpinski gasket like Julia sets with a dynamically invariant property.
A fractafold, a space that is locally modeled on a specified fractal, is the fractal equivalent of a manifold. For compact fractafolds based on the Sierpinski gasket, it was shown by the first author how to compute the discrete spectrum of the Laplacian in terms of the spectrum of a finite graph Laplacian. A similar problem was solved by the second author for the case of infinite blowups of a Sierpinski gasket, where spectrum is pure point of infinite multiplicity. Both works used the method of spectral decimations to obtain explicit description of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. In this p…
This article develops analysis on fractal $3N$-gaskets, a class of post-critically finite fractals which include the Sierpinski triangle for $N=1$, specifically properties of the Laplacian $Δ$ on these gaskets. We first prove the existence of a self-similar geodesic metric on these gaskets, and prove heat kernel estimates for this Laplacian with respect to the geodesic metric. We also compute the elements of the method of spectral decimation, a technique used to determine the spectrum of post-critically finite fractals. Spectral decimation on these gaskets arises from more complicated dynamics…
