We present simulations of one magnetic monopole interacting with multiple magnetic singularities. Three-dimensional plots of the energy density are constructed from explicit solutions to the Bogomolny equation obtained by Blair, Cherkis, and Durcan. Animations follow trajectories derived from collective coordinate mechanics on the multi-centered Taub--NUT monopole moduli space. We supplement our numerical results with a complete analytic treatment of the single-defect case.
We revisit the localization computation of the expectation values of 't Hooft operators in $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ SU(N) theory on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$. We show that the part of the answer arising from "monopole bubbling" on $\mathbb{R}^3$ can be understood as an equivariant integral over a Kronheimer-Nakajima moduli space of instantons on an orbifold of $\mathbb{C}^2$. It can also be described as a Witten index of a certain supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics with $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry. The map between the defect data and the quiver quantum mechanics is worked out for all value…
The 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole solution in Yang-Mills theory is given new physical interpretation in the geometric theory of defects. It describes solids with continuous distribution of dislocations and disclinations. The corresponding densities of Burgers and Frank vectors are computed. It means that the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole can be seen, probably, in solids.
We investigate the relation between instantons and monopoles in the Laplacian Abelian Gauge using analytical methods in the continuum. Our starting point is the fact that the 't Hooft instanton with its high symmetry leads to a pointlike defect with Hopf invariant one. In order to generalise this result we partly break the symmetry by a local perturbation. We find that for generic configurations near the 't Hooft instanton the defects become loops. The analytical results show explicitly that these defects are magnetic monopoles with unit charge. In addition, the monopoles are twisted to accoun…
We express the Pontryagin index in Polyakov gauge completely in terms of magnetically charged gauge fixing defects, namely magnetic monopoles, lines, and domain walls. Open lines and domain walls are topologically equivalent to monopoles, which are the genuine defects. The emergence of non-genuine magnetically charged closed domain walls can be avoided by choosing the temporal gauge field smoothly. The Pontryagin index is then exclusively determined by the magnetic monopoles.
We study intersecting brane systems that realize a class of singular monopole configurations in four-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. Singular monopoles are solutions to the Bogomolny equation on R^3 with a prescribed number of singularities corresponding to the insertion of 't Hooft defects. We use the brane construction to motivate a recent conjecture on the conditions for which the moduli space of solutions is non-empty. We also show how branes provide physical intuition for various aspects of the dimension formula derived in {arXiv:1404.5616}, including the contribution to the dimensio…
Our understanding of the mechanism by which topological defects are formed in symmetry breaking phase transitions has recently changed. We examine the non-equilibrium dynamics of defect formation for weakly-coupled global O(N) theories possessing vortices (strings) and monopoles. It is seen that, as domains form and grow, defects are swept along on their boundaries at a density of about one defect per coherence area (strings) or per coherence volume (monopoles).
Using the embedded defect method, we classify the possible embeddings of a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole in a general gauge theory. We then discuss some similarities with embedded vortices and relate our results to fundamental monopoles.
We use the generalized Julia-Toulouse approach (GJTA) for condensation of topological currents (charges or defects) to argue that massive photons can coexist consistently with Dirac monopoles. The Proca theory is obtained here via GJTA as a low energy effective theory describing an electric condensate and the mass of the vector boson is responsible for generating a Meissner effect which confines the magnetic defects in monopole-antimonopole pairs connected by physical open magnetic vortices described by Dirac brane invariants, instead of Dirac strings.
We study a class of defect quantum field theories where the quantum field theory in the 3+1-dimensional bulk is a free photon and charged matter and the interactions of the photons with the charges occur entirely on a 2+1-dimensional defect. We observe that at the fully quantum level, the effective action of such a theory is still a defect field theory with free photons propagating in the bulk and the nonlinearities in the quantum corrections to the Maxwell equations confined to the defect. We use this observation to show that the defect field theory has interesting electromagnetic properties.…
We investigate the Laplacian Abelian gauge on the sphere S^4 in the background of a single `t Hooft instanton. To this end we solve the eigenvalue problem of the covariant Laplace operator in the adjoint representation. The ground state wave function serves as an auxiliary Higgs field. We find that the ground state is always degenerate and has nodes. Upon diagonalisation, these zeros induce toplogical defects in the gauge potentials. The nature of the defects crucially depends on the order of the zeros. For first-order zeros one obtains magnetic monopoles. The generic defects, however, arise f…
We give a gauge-invariant definition of the vortex surface in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory without using the gauge fixing procedure. In this construction, gauge-invariant magnetic monopoles with fractional magnetic charges emerge in the boundary of the non-oriented vortex surface such that the asymptotic string tension reproduces the correct $N$-ality dependence. We show that gauge-invariant magnetic monopoles and vortices are simultaneously responsible for quark confinement in four dimensional spacetime based on the Wilson criterion. These results are extracted from a non-Abelian Stokes theorem de…
This paper is dedicated to studying various aspects of topological defects, appearing in mean-field theory treatments of physical systems such as ultracold atomic gases and gauge field theories. We start by investigating topological charge ambiguity and addition of topological charges using the mathematical formalism of covering spaces, which clarifies many aspects these phenomena. Subsequently, we classify topological defect configurations consisting of several monopoles and unknotted ring defects in terms of homotopy groups and fundamental group actions on them, thus generalizing the previou…
In this paper, we propose a string theory description of generic 't Hooft defects in $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ supersymmetric gauge theories. We show that the space of supersymmetric ground states is given by the moduli space of singular monopoles and that in this setting, Kronheimer's correspondence is realized as T-duality. We conjecture that this brane configuration can be used to study the full dynamics of monopole bubbling.
Ensembles of magnetic defects represent quantum variables that have been detected and extensively explored in lattice ${\rm SU}(N)$ pure Yang-Mills theory. They successfully explain many properties of confinement and are strongly believed to capture the (infrared) path-integral measure. In this work, we initially motivate the presence of magnetic non-Abelian degrees of freedom in these ensembles. Next, we consider a simple Gaussian model to account for fluctuations. In this case, both center vortices and monopoles become relevant degrees in Wilson loop averages. These physical inputs are then …
We propose that the only possible realization of a magnetic pole is emergent, it being an artefact of a torsion defect in a curved spacetime. This special phase is characterized by a class of degenerate metric spacetime solutions of first order gravity in vacuum. The (apparent) magnetic charge is shown to have a topological origin, given by a lower dimensional counterpart of the Nieh-Yan index. At the invertible metric phase at a distance, this topological charge gets reflected as the (magnetic) Reissner-Nordstrom charge to an asymptotic observer, even though the defect itself remains hidden.
We show that when a topological defect with extended world-volume annihilates with an anti-defect, there arise topological defects with dimensions less than those of the original defects by one. Domain wall annihilations create vortices while monopole-string annihilations result in instantons. We find that twisted domain wall rings are vortices, whereas twisted monopole rings are instantons.
We study cosmological defect formation after brane inflation. The cosmological defects are corresponding to the branes that have less than three spacial dimensions in the uncompactified spacetime. Contrary to the previous arguments, production of monopoles and domain walls are not always negligible. Monopoles and domain walls are formed by the branes extended between mother branes.
The relation between defects of Abelian gauges and instantons is discussed for explicit examples in the Laplacian Abelian gauge. The defect coming from an instanton is pointlike and becomes a monopole loop with twist upon perturbation. The interplay between magnetic charge, twist and instanton number - encoded as a Hopf invariant - is investigated with the help of a new method, an auxiliary Abelian fibre bundle.
We study a 7-dimensional brane world scenario with a Ricci-flat 3-brane residing in the core of a composite monopole defect, i.e. a defect composed of a 'tHooft-Polyakov and a global monopole. Admitting a direct interaction between the two bosonic sectors of the theory, we analyse the structure of the space-time in the limits of small, respectively large direct interaction coupling constant. For large direct interaction, the global monopole disappears from the system and leaves behind a negative cosmological constant in the bulk such that gravity-localising solutions are possible without the a…
We show that the degrees of freedom associated with magnetic monopole- and vortexlike gluonic configurations make a strong contribution to the anomaly of the energy-momentum tensor of Yang-Mills theory in the deconfinement phase immediately above the critical temperature. As is well known in zero-temperature Yang-Mills theory, the monopoles and vortices are constituents of a generic gluonic object in which the two neighbor monopoles are connected together by a segment of vortex string. Our results provide evidence that the monopole-vortex chains in SU(2) gauge theory and their SU(3) counterpar…
In this paper we study the regular self-gravitating 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopole in a global monopole spacetime. We show that for the large distance, the structure of the manifold corresponds to the Reissner-Nordström spacetime with a solid angle deficit factor. Although we analyze static and spherically symmetric solutions, it is not possible to solve analytically the system of coupled differential equations and only numerical evaluations can provide detailed information about the behavior of this system at the neighborhood of the defect's core. So, for this reason we solve numerically…
In this paper, we derive an exact black hole spacetime metric in the Einstein-Hilbert-Bumblebee (EHB) gravity around global monopole field. We study the horizon, temperature, and the photon sphere of the black hole. Using the null geodesics equation, we obtain the shadow cast by the Schwarzschild-like black hole with a topological defect in bumblebee gravity. Interestingly, the radius of shadow of the black hole increases with increase in the global monopole parameter. We also visualize the shadows and energy emission rates for different values of parameters. Moreover, using the Gauss-Bonnet t…
We investigate Georgi-Glashow model in terms of a set of explicitly SO(3) gauge invariant dynamical variables. In the new description a novel compact abelian gauge invariance emerges naturally. As a consequence magnetic monopoles occur as point like "defects" in space time. Their non-perturbative contribution to the partition function is explicitly included. This procedure corresponds to dynamical "abelian projection" without gauge fixing. In the Higgs phase the above abelian invariance is to be identified with electromagnetism. We also study the effect of $θ$ term in the above abelian theory.
We discuss how the topological defects in the dark sector affect the Standard Model sector when the dark photon has a kinetic mixing with the QED photon. In particular, we consider the dark photon appearing in the successive gauge symmetry breaking, $\mathrm{SU}(2)\to \mathrm{U}(1) \to \mathbb{Z}_2$, where the remaining $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is the center of $\mathrm{SU(2)}$. In this model, the monopole is trapped into the cosmic strings and forms the so-called bead solution. As we will discuss, the dark cosmic string induces the QED magnetic flux inside the dark string through the kinetic mixing. Th…
We study the dynamics of topological defects in the context of ``topological inflation" proposed by Vilenkin and Linde independently. Analysing the time evolution of planar domain walls and of global monopoles, we find that the defects undergo inflationary expansion if $η\stackrel{>}{\sim}0.33m_{Pl}$, where $η$ is the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field and $m_{Pl}$ is the Planck mass. This result confirms the estimates by Vilenkin and Linde. The critical value of $η$ is independent of the coupling constant $λ$ and the initial size of the defect. Even for defects with an initial size m…
The topological defect scenario of origin of the observed highest energy cosmic rays is reviewed. Under a variety of circumstances, topological defects formed in the early Universe can be sources of very massive particles in the Universe today. The decay products of these massive particles may be responsible for the observed highest energy cosmic ray particles above $10^{20}$ eV. Some massive particle production processes involving cosmic strings and magnetic monopoles are discussed. We also discuss the implications of results of certain recent numerical simulations of evolution of cosmic stri…
The gravitational field of monopoles, cosmic strings and domain walls is studied in the quadratic gravitational theory $R+αR^2$ with $α|R|\ll 1$, and is compared with the result in Einstein's theory. The metric aquires modifications which correspond to a short range `Newtonian' potential for gauge cosmic strings, gauge monopoles and domain walls and to a long range one for global monopoles and global cosmic strings. In this theory the corrections turn out to be attractive for all the defects. We explain, however, that the sign of these corrections in general depends on the particular higher or…
The symmetry breaking of grand unified gauge groups in the early Universe often leaves behind relic topological defects such as cosmic strings, domain walls, or monopoles. For some symmetry breaking chains, hybrid defects can form where cosmic strings attach to domain walls or monopoles attach to strings. In general, such hybrid defects are unstable, with one defect "eating" the other via the conversion of its rest mass into the other's kinetic energy and subsequently decaying via gravitational waves. In this work, we determine the gravitational wave spectrum from 1) the destruction of a cosmi…
I present a topological defect solution that arises in a theory where Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken by a rank-two antisymmetric tensor field, and I discuss its observational signatures.
By making use of the complete decomposition of SO(3) spin connection, the topological defect in 3-dimensional Euclidean gravity is studied in detail. The topological structure of disclination is given as the combination of a monopole structure and a vortex structure. Furthermore, the Kac-Moody algebra generated by the monopole and vortex is discussed in three dimensional Chern-Simons theory.
We propose that a charged two-condensate Bose system possesses point-like topological defects which can be interpreted as magnetic monopoles. By making use of the $ϕ$-mapping theory, the topological charges of these magnetic monopoles can be expressed in terms of the Hopf indices and Brouwer degree of the $ϕ$-mapping.
We propose a new solution to the cosmological monopole problem in which domain walls sweep away the magnetic monopoles and subsequently decay. The solution does not require extensive fine tuning or model building - it works for the prototype SU(5) Grand Unification model. More generally, it shows that defect interactions can lead to ``defect erasure'' in phase transitions and that this can be relevant to early universe physics.

We investigate the advantages of machine learning techniques to recognize the dynamics of topological objects in quantum field theories. We consider the compact U(1) gauge theory in three spacetime dimensions as the simplest example of a theory that exhibits confinement and mass gap phenomena generated by monopoles. We train a neural network with a generated set of monopole configurations to distinguish between confinement and deconfinement phases, from which it is possible to determine the deconfinement transition point and to predict several observables. The model uses a supervised learning …
We show how the length scale hierarchy, resulting from different interaction strengths in an optically-trapped spin-1 sodium-23 Bose-Einstein condensate, can lead to intriguing core deformations in singular topological defects. In particular, a point defect can be unstable with respect to the formation of a stable half-quantum vortex ring (an Alice ring), providing a realistic scheme to use dissipation as a sophisticated state engineering tool. We compute the threshold for stability of the point monopole, which is beyond the current experimental regime.
According to previous work, topological defects expand exponentially without an end if the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field is of the order of the Planck mass. We extend the study of inflating topological defects to the Brans-Dicke gravity. With the help of numerical simulation we investigate the dynamics and spacetime structure of a global monopole. Contrary to the case of the Einstein gravity, any inflating monopole eventually shrinks and takes a stable configuration. We also discuss cosmological constraints on the model parameters.
We present a non-perturbative formalism for measuring defect free energies (monopole mass or vortex tension) in three-dimensional SU(2)+adjoint Higgs models. Starting from twisted, translation invariant boundary conditions, we perform a change of variables that allows us to express the defect free energies in terms of 't Hooft loops. We propose that the defect free energies can be used to distinguish between phases in this model, and also more generally in other gauge field theories where no local order parameters exist. In the case of monopoles, our construction can also be used in four-dimen…
We review the method of blocking of topological defects from continuum used as a non--perturbative tool to construct effective actions for these defects. The actions are formulated in the continuum limit while the couplings of these actions can be derived from simple observables calculated numerically on lattices with a finite lattice spacing. We demonstrate the success of the method in deriving the effective actions for Abelian monopoles in the pure SU(2) gauge models in an Abelian gauge. In particular, we discuss the gluodynamics in three and four space--time dimensions at zero and non--zero…
Topological states of matter are, generally, quantum liquids of conserved topological defects. We establish this by constructing and analyzing topological field theories which describe the dynamics of field singularities using gauge fields. Homotopy groups are utilized to identify topologically protected singularities, and the conservation of their protected number is captured by a topological action term that unambiguously obtains from the given set of symmetries. Stable phases of these theories include quantum liquids with emergent massless Abelian and non-Abelian gauge fields, as well as to…
We present the first CMB power spectra from numerical simulations of the global O(N) linear $σ$-model with N = 2,3, which have global strings and monopoles as topological defects. In order to compute the CMB power spectra we compute the unequal time correlators (UETCs) of the energy-momentum tensor, showing that they fall off at high wave number faster than naive estimates based on the geometry of the defects, indicating non-trivial (anti-)correlations between the defects and the surrounding Goldstone boson field. We obtain source functions for Einstein-Boltzmann solvers from the UETCs, using …
Quantum anomalies offer a useful guide for the exploration of transport phenomena in topological semimetals. In this work, we introduce a model describing a semimetal in four spatial dimensions, whose nodal points act like tensor monopoles in momentum space. This system is shown to exhibit monopole-to-monopole phase transitions, as signaled by a change in the value of the topological Dixmier-Douady invariant as well as by the associated surface states on its boundary. We use this model to reveal an intriguing "4D parity magnetic effect", which stems from a parity-type anomaly. In this effect, …
We study static, spherically symmetric, composite global-local monopoles with a direct interaction term between the two sectors in the regime where the interaction potential is large. At some critical coupling the global defect disappears and with it the deficit angle of the space-time. We find new solutions which represent local monopoles in an Anti-de-Sitter spacetime. In another parameter range the magnetic monopole, or even both, disappear. The decay of the magnetic monopole is accompanied by a dynamical transition from the higgsed phase to the gauge-symmetric phase. We comment on the appl…
Semimetals exhibiting nodal lines or nodal surfaces represent a novel class of topological states of matter. While conventional Weyl semimetals exhibit momentum-space Dirac monopoles, these more exotic semimetals can feature unusual topological defects that are analogous to extended monopoles. In this work, we describe a scheme by which nodal rings and nodal spheres can be realized in synthetic quantum matter through well-defined periodic-driving protocols. As a central result of our work, we characterize these nodal defects through the quantum metric, which is a gauge-invariant quantity assoc…
Kinks, vortices, monopoles are extended objects, or defects, of quantum origin with topologically non-trivial properties and macroscopic behavior. They are described in Quantum Field Theory in terms of non-homogeneous boson condensation. I will review the related QFT formalism, the spontaneous breakdown of symmetry framework in which the defects appear and discuss finite temperature effects, also in connection with phase transition problematics.
Interactions of different types of topological defects can play an important role in the aftermath of a phase transition. We study interactions of fundamental magnetic monopoles and stable domain walls in a Grand Unified theory in which $SU(5) \times Z_2$ symmetry is spontaneously broken to $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)/Z_6$. We find that there are only two distinct outcomes depending on the relative orientation of the monopole and the wall in internal space. In one case, the monopole passes through the wall, while in the other it unwinds on hitting the wall.
I analyze the interplay of gauge and global symmetries in the theory of topological defects. In a two-dimensional model in which both gauge symmetries and {\it exact} global symmetries are spontaneously broken, stable vortices may fail to exist even though magnetic flux is topologically conserved. Following Vachaspati and Achúcarro, I formulate the condition that must be satisfied by the pattern of symmetry breakdown for finite-energy configurations to exist in which the conserved magnetic flux is spread out instead of confined to a localized vortex. If this condition is met, vortices are alwa…
Electrons propagating in a magnetically ordered medium experience an additional gauge field associated with the Berry phase of their spin following the local magnetic texture. In contrast to the usual electromagnetic field, this gauge field admits monopole excitations, corresponding to hedgehog defects of the magnetic order. In an insulator, these hedgehogs carry a well-defined electric charge allowing for them to be controlled by electric fields. One particularly robust mechanism that contributes to the charge is the orbital magnetoelectric effect, captured by a $θ$ angle, which leads to a ch…
In this paper we analyse the relativistic quantum motion of a charged spin-0 particle in the presence of a dyon, Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field and scalar potential, in the spacetimes produced by an idealized cosmic string and global monopole. In order to develop this analysis, we assume that the dyon and the Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field are superposed to both gravitational defects. Two distinct configurations for the scalar potential, $S(r)$, are considered: $i)$ the potential proportional to the inverse of the radial distance, i.e., $S\propto1/r$, and $ii)$ the potential proportional to this d…
We construct a non Abelian model for SU(2) QCD in Euclidean three-dimensional spacetime and study its different phases. The model contains a center vortex sector coupled to a dual effective field encoding information about how the vortices are paired in the ensemble. The possible phases in parameter space are interpreted in terms of the proliferation of either closed center vortices or closed chains, where the endpoints of open vortices are attached in pairs to monopole-like defects.
