In 1963, a Simple Approach was developed to study the ground state energy of an interacting Bose gas. It consists in the derivation of an Equation, which is not based on perturbation theory, and which gives the exact expansion of the energy at low densities. This Equation is expressed directly in the thermodynamic limit, and only involves functions of $3$ variables, rather than $3N$. Here, we revisit this approach, and show that the Equation yields accurate predictions for various observables for all densities. Specifically, in addition to the ground state energy, we have shown that the Simple Approach gives predictions for the condensate fraction, two-point correlation function, and momentum distribution. We have carried out a variety of tests by comparing the predictions of the Equation with Quantum Monte Carlo calculations, and have found remarkable agreement. We thus show that the Simple Approach provides a new theoretical tool to understand the behavior of the many-body Bose gas, not only in the small and large density ranges, which have been studied before, but also in the range of intermediate density, for which little is known.
We investigate the large-distance asymptotic behavior of the static density-density and field-field correlation functions in the one-dimensional Bose gas at finite temperature. The asymptotic expansions of the Bose gas correlators are obtained performing a specific continuum limit in the similar low-temperature expansions of the longitudinal and transversal correlation functions of the XXZ spin chain. In the lattice system the correlation lengths are computed as ratios of the largest and next-largest eigenvalues of the XXZ spin chain quantum transfer matrix. In both cases, lattice and continuu…
In this paper, we will review the results obtained thus far by Eric A. Carlen, Elliott H. Lieb and me on a Simplified Approach to the Bose gas. The Simplified Approach yields a family of effective one-particle equations, which capture some non-trivial physical properties of the Bose gas at both low and high densities, and even some of the behavior at intermediate densities. In particular, the Simplified Approach reproduces Bogolyubov's estimates for the ground state energy and condensate fraction at low density, as well as the mean-field estimate for the energy at high densities. We will also …
We study weakly-repulsive Bose-Bose mixtures in two and three dimensions at zero temperature using the functional renormalization group (FRG). We examine the RG flows and the role of density and spin fluctuations. We study the condition for phase separation and find that this occurs at the mean-field point within the range of parameters explored. Finally, we examine the energy per particle and condensation depletion. We obtain that our FRG calculations compare favorably with known results from perturbative approaches for macroscopic properties.
We study Bose gases in $d$ dimensions, $d \ge 2$, with short-range repulsive pair interactions, at positive temperature, in the canonical ensemble and in the thermodynamic limit. We assume the presence of hard Poissonian obstacles and focus on the non-percolation regime. For sufficiently strong interparticle interactions, we show that almost surely there cannot be Bose--Einstein condensation into a sufficiently localized, normalized one-particle state. The results apply to the eigenstates of the underlying one-particle Hamiltonian.
We consider two-dimensional imperfect attractive Fermi and repulsive Bose gases consisting of spinless point particles whose total interparticle interaction energy is represented by $a N^2/2 V$ with $a=-a_{F}\leq 0$ for fermions, and $a=a_{B}\geq 0$ for bosons. We show that in spite of the attraction the thermodynamics of $d=2$ imperfect Fermi gas remains well defined for $0 \leq a_{F}\leq a_{0}=h^2/2πm$, and is exactly the same as the one of the repulsive imperfect Bose gas with $a_{B}=a_{0}-a_{F}$. In particular, for $a_{F}=a_{0}$ one observes the thermodynamic equivalence of the attractive …
The quantum dynamics of one-dimensional bosonic Josephson junctions with attractive and repulsive interparticle interactions is studied using the Bose-Hubbard model and by numerically-exact computations of the full many-body Hamiltonian. A symmetry present in the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian dictates an equivalence between the evolution in time of attractive and repulsive Josephson junctions with attractive and repulsive interactions of equal magnitude. The full many-body Hamiltonian does not possess this symmetry and consequently the dynamics of the attractive and repulsive junctions are differen…

We show that the Kapitza stabilization can occur in the context of nonlinear quantum fields. Through this phenomenon, an amplitude-modulated lattice can stabilize a Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive interactions and prevent the spreading for long times. We present a classical and quantum analysis in the framework of Gross-Pitaevskii equation, specifying the parameter region where stabilization occurs. Effects of nonlinearity lead to a significant increase of the stability domain compared with the classical case. Our proposal can be experimentally implemented with current cold atom settin…
We consider periodic waves in miscible two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive nonlinear interactions constants. Exact one-phase solution is found for the case when all these constants are equal to each other (i.e., for Manakov limit). New types of nonlinear polarization waves are considered in detail. The connection of the solutions found with experimentally observed periodic structures in two-component condensates is discussed.
The Simplified approach to the Bose gas was introduced by Lieb in 1963 to study the ground state of systems of interacting Bosons. In a series of recent papers, it has been shown that the Simplified approach exceeds earlier expectations, and gives asymptotically accurate predictions at both low and high density. In the intermediate density regime, the qualitative predictions of the Simplified approach have also been found to agree very well with Quantum Monte Carlo computations. Until now, the Simplified approach had only been formulated for translation invariant systems, thus excluding extern…
We consider impurity atoms embedded in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a quasi-one dimensional regime. We study the effects of repulsive coupling between the impurities and Bose species on the equilibrium of the system for both miscible and immiscible mixtures by numerically solving the underlying coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Our results reveal that the presence of impurities may lead to a miscible-immiscible phase transition due to the interaction of the impurities and the two condensates. Within the realm of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations we calculate the quantum fluct…
The detailed mean-field treatment of the Bose polaron problem in two and three dimensions is presented. Particularly, assuming that impurity is immersed in the dilute Bose gas and interacts with bosons via the hard-sphere two-body potential, we calculate the low-momentum parameters of its spectrum, namely, the binding energy and the effective mass. The limits of applicability of the mean-field approach to a problem of mobile impurity in Bose-Einstein condensates are discussed by comparing our results to the Monte Carlo simulations data.
We calculate the spatial distributions and the dynamics of a few-body two-component strongly interacting Bose gas confined to an effectively one-dimensional trapping potential. We describe the densities for each component in the trap for different interaction and population imbalances. We calculate the time evolution of the system and show that, for a certain ratio of interactions, the minority population travels through the system as an effective wave packet.
We consider a Bose-Einstein bicondensate (BEC) of $^{87}Rb$, trapped in two different internal levels, in a situation where the density undergoes a symmetry breaking in momentum space. This occurs for a suitable number of condensed atoms within a double well dispersion curve, obtained by Raman coupling two internal states with two tilted and detuned light fields. Evidence of bistability results from the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By second quantization, we evaluate the tunneling rate between the two asymmetric states; the effects of losses on coherence are also considered.
We investigate by numerical simulations the pattern formation after an oscillating attractive-repulsive obstacle inserted into the flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate. For slow oscillations we observe a complex emission of vortex dipoles. For moderate oscillations organized lined up vortex dipoles are emitted. For high frequencies no dipoles are observed but only lined up dark fragments. The results shows that the drag force turns negative for sufficiently high frequency. We also successfully model the {\it ship waves} in front of the obstacle. In the limit of very fast oscillations all the exc…
An inverse population transfer of the repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a weakly bound double-well trap is explored within the 3D time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The model avoids numerous common approximations (two-mode treatment, time-space factorization, etc) and closely follows the conditions of Heidelberg experiments, thus providing a realistic description of BEC dynamics. The transfer is driven by a time-dependent shift of a barrier separating the left and right wells. It is shown that completeness and robustness of the process considerably depend on the amplitude and …
Multicomponent quantum gases are ideal platforms to study fundamental phenomena arising from the mutual interaction between different constituents. Particularly, due to the repulsive interactions between two species, the system may exhibit a phase separation. We develop a mean-field-based theory for a two-component Bose mixture, which is equivalent to the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation, and derive analytical expressions for the phase boundary and miscibility. The majority of existing theories, which are valid only for weakly interacting Bose gases, predict that the phase boundary is det…
Repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate, where the short-range interaction is included up to the third order by the interaction radius, demonstrates existence of a bright soliton in a narrow interval of parameters. This soliton is studied here for the boson-fermion mixture, where spin-1/2 fermions are consider in the regime of full spin polarization. Influence of fermions via the boson-fermion interaction is considered up to the third order by the interaction radius. Fermions themselves are considered by hydrodynamic model including the pressure evolution equation. Interaction between fermions is c…
We describe a model of dynamic Bose-Einstein condensates near a Feshbach resonance that is computationally feasible under assumptions of spherical or cylindrical symmetry. Simulations in spherical symmetry approximate the experimentally measured time to collapse of an unstably attractive condensate only when the molecular binding energy in the model is correct, demonstrating that the quantum fluctuations and atom-molecule pairing included in the model are the dominant mechanisms during collapse. Simulations of condensates with repulsive interactions find some quantitative disagreement, suggest…
By numerical and variational analysis of the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the formation and dynamics of bright and vortex-bright solitons in a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate for large repulsive atomic interactions. Phase diagram showing the region of stability of the solitons is obtained. We also study the dynamics of breathing oscillation of the solitons as well as the collision dynamics of two solitons at large velocities. Two solitons placed side-by-side at rest coalesce to form a stable bound soliton molecule due to dipolar attraction.
We investigate the formation of a Bose polaron when a single impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate is quenched from a non-interacting to an attractively interacting state in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance. We use a beyond-Fröhlich Hamiltonian to describe both sides of the resonance and a coherent-state variational ansatz to compute the time evolution of boson density profiles in position space. We find that on the repulsive side of the Feshbach resonance, the Bose polaron performs long-lived oscillations, which is surprising given that the two-body problem has only one bound state coupl…
We consider a binary Bose-Einstein condensate with linear and nonlinear interactions between its components, which emulate the spinor system with spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings. For a relatively dense condensate, 1D coupled equations with the nonpolynomial nonlinearity of both repulsive and attractive signs are derived from the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Profiles of modes confined in an external potential under the action of the self-repulsion, and self-trapped solitons in the case of the self-attraction, are found in a numerical form and by means of analytical approximations. In the f…
We study the system of multi-body interacting bosons on a two dimensional optical lattice and analyze the formation of bound bosonic pairs in the context of the Bose-Hubbard model. Assuming a repulsive two-body interaction we obtain the signatures of pair formation in the regions between the Mott insulator lobes of the phase diagram for different choices of higher order local interactions. Considering the most general Bose-Hubbard model involving local multi-body interactions we investigate the ground state properties utilizing the cluster mean-field theory approach and further confirm the res…
We consider quantum quenches of harmonically trapped one-dimensional bosons from repulsive to attractive interactions, and the resulting breathing dynamics of the so-called `super-Tonks-Girardeau' (sTG) state. This state is highly excited compared to the ground state of the attractive gas, and is the lowest eigenstate where the particles are not bound or clustered. We analyze the dynamics from a spectral point of view, identifying the relevant eigenstates of the interacting trapped many-body system, and analyzing the nature of these quantum eigenstates. To obtain explicit eigenspectra, we use …
We probe the interface between a phase-separated Bose-Fermi mixture consisting of a small BEC of $^{41}$K residing in a large Fermi sea of $^6$Li. We quantify the residual spatial overlap between the two components by measuring three-body recombination losses for variable strength of the interspecies repulsion. A comparison with a numerical mean-field model highlights the importance of the kinetic energy term for the condensed bosons in maintaining the thin interface far into the phase-separated regime. Our results demonstrate a corresponding smoothing of the phase transition in a system of fi…
The driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model can be experimentally realized with either negative or positive onsite detunings, inter-site hopping energies, and onsite interaction energies. Here we use one-dimensional matrix product density operators to perform a fully quantum investigation of the dependence of the non-equilibrium steady states of this model on the signs of these parameters. Due to a symmetry in the Lindblad master equation, we find that simultaneously changing the sign of the interaction energies, hopping energies, and chemical potentials leaves the local boson number distributio…
The problem of an impurity particle moving through a bosonic medium plays a fundamental role in physics. However, the canonical scenario of a mobile impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) has not yet been realized. Here, we use radio frequency spectroscopy of ultracold bosonic $^{39}$K atoms to experimentally demonstrate the existence of a well-defined quasiparticle state of an impurity interacting with a BEC. We measure the energy of the impurity both for attractive and repulsive interactions, and find excellent agreement with theories that incorporate three-body correlations, …
Polaron quasiparticles are formed when a mobile impurity is coupled to the elementary excitations of a many-particle background. In the field of ultracold atoms, the study of the associated impurity problem has attracted a growing interest over the last fifteen years. Polaron quasiparticle properties are essential to our understanding of a variety of paradigmatic quantum many-body systems realized in ultracold atomic gases and in the solid state, from imbalanced Bose-Fermi and Fermi-Fermi mixtures to fermionic Hubbard models. In this topical review, we focus on the so-called repulsive polaron …
We study the formation and dynamics of bright solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional reduced mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive short-range interactions. The study is carried out using a variational approximation and a numerical solution. Plots of chemical potential and root mean square (rms) size of solitons are obtained for the quasi-one-dimensional model of three different dipolar condensates of 52Cr, 168Er and 164Dy atoms. The results achieved are in good agreement with those produced by the full three-dimensional mean-field model of the …
We investigate the properties of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. The interactions between bosons are modeled by a hard sphere potential with scattering length $a$, whereas the interactions between the impurity and the bosons are modeled by a short-range, square-well potential where both the sign and the strength of the scattering length $b$ can be varied by adjusting the well depth. We characterize the attractive and the repulsive polaron branch by calculating the binding energy and the effective mass of the impurity. Furthermore…
Due to the vast growth of the many-body level density with excitation energy, its smoothed form is of central relevance for spectral and thermodynamic properties of interacting quantum systems. We compute the cumulative of this level density for confined one-dimensional continuous systems with repulsive short-range interactions. We show that the crossover from an ideal Bose gas to the strongly correlated, fermionized gas, i.e., partial fermionization, exhibits universal behavior: Systems with very few up to many particles share the same underlying spectral features. In our derivation we supple…
We introduce a one-dimensional (1D) spatially inhomogeneous Bose-Hubbard model (BHM) with the strength of the onsite repulsive interactions growing, with the discrete coordinate $z_{j}$, as $|z_{j}|^{α}$ with $α>0$. Recently, the analysis of the mean-field (MF) counterpart of this system has demonstrated self-trapping of robust unstaggered discrete solitons, under condition $α>1$. Using the numerically implemented method of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we demonstrate that, in a certain range of interaction, the BHM also self-traps, in the ground state, into a soliton-like c…
We derive exact analytical results for the wave functions and energies of harmonically trapped two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with weakly repulsive interactions under rotation. The isospin symmetric wave functions are universal and do not depend on the matrix elements of the two-body interaction. The comparison with the results from numerical diagonalization shows that the ground state and low-lying excitations consists of condensates of p-wave pairs for repulsive contact interactions, Coulomb interactions, and the repulsive interactions between aligned dipoles.
We present a thorough study of the thermodynamics of a one-dimensional repulsive Bose gas, focusing in particular on corrections beyond the Luttinger-liquid description. We compute the chemical potential, the pressure and the contact, as a function of temperature and gas parameter with exact thermal Bethe-Ansatz. In addition, we provide interpretations of the main features in the analytically tractable regimes, based on a variety of approaches (Bogoliubov, hard-core, Sommerfeld and virial). The beyond Luttinger-liquid thermodynamic effects are found to be non-monotonic as a function of gas par…
Numerically we investigate the ground state of effective one-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi coupled two pseudo-spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) under the effect of harmonic traps. For both signs of the interaction, density profiles of SO and Rabi coupled BECs in harmonic potentials, which simulate a real experimental situation are obtained. The harmonic trap causes a strong reduction of the multi-peak nature of the condensate and it increases its density. For repulsive interactions, the increase of SO coupling results in an uncompressed less dense condensate and with increased mul…
The paper is devoted to numerical study of stability of nonlinear localized modes ("gap solitons") for the spatially one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (1D GPE) with periodic potential and repulsive interparticle interactions. We use the Evans function approach combined with the exterior algebra formulation in order to detect and describe weak oscillatory instabilities. We show that the simplest ("fundamental") gap solitons in the first and in the second spectral gaps can undergo oscillatory instabilities for certain values of the frequency parameter (i.e., the chemical potential). The …
We show that self-localized ground states can be created in the spin-balanced gas of fermions with repulsion between the spin components, whose strength grows from the center to periphery, in combination with the harmonic-oscillator (HO) trapping potential acting in one or two transverse directions. We also consider the ground state in the non-interacting Fermi gas under the action of the spatially growing tightness of the one- or two-dimensional (1D or 2D) HO confinement. These settings are considered in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsacker (TF-vW) density functional. It is found …
Two aspects of the transport of the repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a double-well trap are inspected: impact of the interatomic interaction and analogy to the Josephson effect. The analysis employs a numerical solution of 3D time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a total order parameter covering all the trap. The population transfer is driven by a time-dependent shift of a barrier separating the left and right wells. Sharp and soft profiles of the barrier velocity are tested. Evolution of the relevant characteristics, involving phase differences and currents, is inspected. It…
We investigate perturbative thermodynamic geometry of nonextensive ideal Classical, Bose and Fermi gases. We show that the intrinsic statistical interaction of nonextensive Bose (Fermi) gas is attractive (repulsive) similar to the extensive case but the value of thermodynamic curvature is changed by nonextensive parameter. In contrary to the extensive ideal classical gas, the nonextensive one may be divided to two different regimes. According to deviation parameter of the system to the nonextensive case, one can find a special value of fugacity, $z^{*}$, where the sign of thermodynamic curvatur…
We study by means of first principle Quantum Monte Carlo simulations the ground state phase diagram of a system of dipolar bosons with aligned dipole moments, and with the inclusion of a two-body repulsive potential of varying range. The system is shown to display a supersolid phase in a relatively broad region of the phase diagram, featuring different crystalline patterns depending on the density and on the range of the repulsive part of the interaction (scattering length). The supersolid phase is sandwiched between a classical crystal of parallel filaments and a homogeneous superfluid phase.…
The ground state of a free standing, self-bound droplet comprising four hundred dipolar Bose particles with aligned dipole moments, with an additional purely repulsive two-body interaction, is investigated by Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The focus here is on the evolution of the cluster as the effective range of the repulsive interaction is varied. We identify a ``classical'' regime, in which binding arises exclusively from the dipolar potential energy and the cluster is a quasi-one-dimensional filament, and a ``quantum'' regime of prolate droplets, held together to a significant degree by…
We study the impact of collisionally inhomogeneous binary and three body interaction on Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of a dilute gas in a bichromatic optical lattice. We observe that the localized matter wave density which decreases after the introduction of repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction can be sustained by the addition of constant attractive binary strength in equal amounts. If the balance between repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction and constant attractive interaction is disturbed, the condensates collapse. Reversal of sign of interaction ensures th…
The dynamics of weakly interacting three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), trapped in external axially symmetric plus anharmonic distortion potential are studied. Within a variational approach and time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, the coupled condensate width equations are derived. By modulating anharmonic distortion of the trapping potential, nonlinear features are studied numerically and illustrated analytically, such as mode coupling of oscillation modes, and resonances. Furthermore, the stability of attractive interaction BEC in both repulsive and attractive anharmonic …
We study the formation of stable bright solitons in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) spin-orbit- (SO-) and Rabi-coupled two pseudospinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of 164 Dy atoms in the presence of repulsive contact interactions. As a result of the combined attraction-repulsion effect of both interactions and the addition of SO and Rabi couplings, two kinds of ground states in the form of self-trapped bright solitons can be formed, a plane-wave soliton (PWS) and a stripe soliton (SS). These quasi-1D solitons cannot exist in a condensate with purely repulsive contact interactions…
We obtain an exact expression for the time evolution of the interacting Bose gas following a quench from a generic initial state using the Yudson representation for integrable systems. We study the time evolution of the density and noise correlation for a small number of bosons and their asymptotic behavior for any number. We show that for any value of the coupling, as long as it is repulsive, the system asymptotes towards a strongly repulsive gas, while for any value of an attractive coupling the long time behavior is dominated by the maximal bound state. This occurs independently of the init…
We consider an impurity in a semi-infinite one-dimensional system of weakly-interacting bosons. We calculate the interaction potential for the impurity due to the end of the system, i.e., the wall. For local repulsive (attractive) interaction between the impurity and the Bose gas, the interaction potential is attractive (repulsive). At short distances from the wall it decays exponentially crossing over into a universal $1/r^2$ behavior at separations $r$ above the healing length. Our results can also be interpreted as a Casimir-like interaction between two impurities, where one of them is infi…
