We consider a binary Bose-Einstein condensate with linear and nonlinear interactions between its components, which emulate the spinor system with spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings. For a relatively dense condensate, 1D coupled equations with the nonpolynomial nonlinearity of both repulsive and attractive signs are derived from the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Profiles of modes confined in an external potential under the action of the self-repulsion, and self-trapped solitons in the case of the self-attraction, are found in a numerical form and by means of analytical approximations. In the former case, the interplay of the SO and Rabi couplings with the repulsive nonlinearity strongly distorts shapes of the trapped modes, adding conspicuous side lobes to them. In the case of the attractive nonlinearity, the most essential result is reduction of the collapse threshold under the action of the SO and Rabi couplings.
Numerically we investigate the ground state of effective one-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi coupled two pseudo-spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) under the effect of harmonic traps. For both signs of the interaction, density profiles of SO and Rabi coupled BECs in harmonic potentials, which simulate a real experimental situation are obtained. The harmonic trap causes a strong reduction of the multi-peak nature of the condensate and it increases its density. For repulsive interactions, the increase of SO coupling results in an uncompressed less dense condensate and with increased mul…
We study a two-dimensional fermionic cloud of repulsive alkali-metal atoms characterized by two hyperfine states which are Rabi coupled. Within a variational Hartree-Fock scheme, we calculate analytically the ground-state energy of the system. Then we determine the conditions under which there is a quantum phase transition with spontaneous symmetry breaking from a spin-balanced configuration to a spin-polarized one, an effect known as itinerant ferromagnetism. Interestingly, we find that the transition appears when the interaction energy per particle exceedes both the kinetic energy per partic…
We investigate by numerical simulations the pattern formation after an oscillating attractive-repulsive obstacle inserted into the flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate. For slow oscillations we observe a complex emission of vortex dipoles. For moderate oscillations organized lined up vortex dipoles are emitted. For high frequencies no dipoles are observed but only lined up dark fragments. The results shows that the drag force turns negative for sufficiently high frequency. We also successfully model the {\it ship waves} in front of the obstacle. In the limit of very fast oscillations all the exc…
We study the formation of stable bright solitons in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) spin-orbit- (SO-) and Rabi-coupled two pseudospinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of 164 Dy atoms in the presence of repulsive contact interactions. As a result of the combined attraction-repulsion effect of both interactions and the addition of SO and Rabi couplings, two kinds of ground states in the form of self-trapped bright solitons can be formed, a plane-wave soliton (PWS) and a stripe soliton (SS). These quasi-1D solitons cannot exist in a condensate with purely repulsive contact interactions…
The quantum dynamics of one-dimensional bosonic Josephson junctions with attractive and repulsive interparticle interactions is studied using the Bose-Hubbard model and by numerically-exact computations of the full many-body Hamiltonian. A symmetry present in the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian dictates an equivalence between the evolution in time of attractive and repulsive Josephson junctions with attractive and repulsive interactions of equal magnitude. The full many-body Hamiltonian does not possess this symmetry and consequently the dynamics of the attractive and repulsive junctions are differen…
We study the attractive and repulsive two-component Fermi gas with spin imbalance in two dimensions. Using a generalized $T$-matrix approximation, we examine the thermodynamic properties of both attractive and repulsive contact interacting Fermi gases. The interaction strength, which is characterized by the bound state energy $E_b=\hbar^2/m a_{2d}^2$ in vacuum, can be adjusted through a Feshbach resonance. We calculate the interaction energy, compressibility and spin susceptibility of the two branches of the Fermi gas. For the repulsive branch, we also find a critical strength of interaction $…
We analyze the dynamics of one-dimensional quantum gases with strongly attractive contact interactions. We specify a class of initial states for which attractive forces effectively act as strongly repulsive ones during the time evolution. Our findings extend the theoretical results on the super-Tonks-Girardeau gas to a highly nonequilibrium dynamics. The novel mechanism is illustrated on the prototypical problem of the domain stability in a two-component Fermi gas. We also discuss nonlocal interactions and analyze universality of the presented results. Moreover, we use our conclusions to argue…
Through a simple and exact analytical derivation, we show that for a particle on a lattice, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the spectra in the presence of an attractive potential $\hat{V}$ and its repulsive counterpart $-\hat{V}$. For a Hermitian potential, this result implies that the number of localized states is the same in both, attractive and repulsive, cases although these states occur above (below) the band-continnum for the repulsive (attractive) case. For a $\mP\mT$-symmetric potential that is odd under parity, our result implies that in the $\mP\mT$-unbroken phase, the e…
We investigate the one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D)reduction of a quantum field theory starting from the three-dimensional (3D) many-body Hamiltonian of interacting bosons with spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings. We obtain the effective time-dependent 1D and 2D nonpolynomial Heisenberg equations for both repulsive and attractive signs of the inter-atomic interaction. Our findings show that in case in which the many-body state coincides with the Glauber coherent state, the 1D and 2D Heisenberg equations become 1D and 2D nonpolynomial Schrödinger equations (NPSEs). These models were …
We consider a two-component pancake-shaped, i.e., effectively two-dimensional (2D), Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled by the spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi terms. The SO coupling adopted here is of the mixed Rashba-Dresselhaus type. For this configuration, we derive a system of two 2D nonpolynomial Schrödinger equations (NPSEs), for both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions. In the low- and high-density limits, the system amounts to previously known models, namely, the usual 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation, or the Schrödinger equation with the nonlinearity of power 7/3. We present sim…
We study a two-dimensional two-component Fermi gas with attractive or repulsive short-range interactions at zero temperature. We use Diffusion Monte Carlo with Fixed Node approximation in order to calculate the energy per particle and the opposite-spin pair distribution functions. We show the relevance of beyond mean field effects and verify the consistency of our approach by using Tan's Contact relations.
We consider two-dimensional imperfect attractive Fermi and repulsive Bose gases consisting of spinless point particles whose total interparticle interaction energy is represented by $a N^2/2 V$ with $a=-a_{F}\leq 0$ for fermions, and $a=a_{B}\geq 0$ for bosons. We show that in spite of the attraction the thermodynamics of $d=2$ imperfect Fermi gas remains well defined for $0 \leq a_{F}\leq a_{0}=h^2/2πm$, and is exactly the same as the one of the repulsive imperfect Bose gas with $a_{B}=a_{0}-a_{F}$. In particular, for $a_{F}=a_{0}$ one observes the thermodynamic equivalence of the attractive …
Recent experimental advances in ultra-cold Fermi gases allow for exploring response functions under different dynamical conditions. In particular, the issue of obtaining a "quasi-repulsive" regime starting from a Fermi gas with an attractive inter-particle interaction while avoiding the formation of the two-body bound state is currently debated. Here, we provide a calculation of the density and spin response for a wide range of temperature and coupling both in the attractive and quasi-repulsive regime, whereby the system is assumed to evolve non-adiabatically toward the "upper branch" of the F…
We describe a model of dynamic Bose-Einstein condensates near a Feshbach resonance that is computationally feasible under assumptions of spherical or cylindrical symmetry. Simulations in spherical symmetry approximate the experimentally measured time to collapse of an unstably attractive condensate only when the molecular binding energy in the model is correct, demonstrating that the quantum fluctuations and atom-molecule pairing included in the model are the dominant mechanisms during collapse. Simulations of condensates with repulsive interactions find some quantitative disagreement, suggest…
We analytically calculate the leading quantum corrections of the ground-state energy of two- and one-dimensional weakly interacting Rabi-coupled Bose-Bose mixtures in the frame of the Bogoliubov approximation. We show that to repulsive intraspecies and attractive interspecies interactions, the effect of quantum fluctuations favors the formation of self-bound droplets. These liquidlike states are crucially affected by the Rabi coupling, leading thus to the appearance of a quantum instability. We derive meaningful formulas to describe the droplet phase in the one-dimensional case.
We consider quantum quenches of harmonically trapped one-dimensional bosons from repulsive to attractive interactions, and the resulting breathing dynamics of the so-called `super-Tonks-Girardeau' (sTG) state. This state is highly excited compared to the ground state of the attractive gas, and is the lowest eigenstate where the particles are not bound or clustered. We analyze the dynamics from a spectral point of view, identifying the relevant eigenstates of the interacting trapped many-body system, and analyzing the nature of these quantum eigenstates. To obtain explicit eigenspectra, we use …
This is a comment on Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 080401 (2012) by Palestini et al. We pointed out that the diagrammatic method in that article violates gauge invariance. As a consequence, there will a Meissner effect in the normal phase and the contribution from collective modes are not mentioned in the symmetry-broken phase.
We show theoretically that the sudden application of an appropriate ac field to correlated lattice fermions flips the band structure and effectively switches the interaction from repulsive to attractive. The nonadiabatically driven system is characterized by a negative temperature with a population inversion. We numerically demonstrate the converted interaction in an ac-driven Hubbard model with the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory solved by the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. Based on this, we propose an efficient ramp-up protocol for ac fields that can suppress heating,…
We study the real time evolution of the correlation functions in a globally quenched interacting one dimensional lattice system by means of time adaptive density matrix renormalization group. We find a clear light-cone behavior quenching the repulsive interaction from the gapped density wave regime. The spreading velocity increases with the final values of the interaction and then saturates at a certain finite value. In the case of a Luttinger liquid phase as the initial state, for strong repulsive interaction quenches, a more complex dynamics occurs as a result of bound state formations. From…
The dynamics of a single impurity in an environment is a fundamental problem in many-body physics. In the solid state, a well-known case is an impurity coupled to a bosonic bath, for example lattice vibrations. Here the impurity together with its accompanying lattice distortion form a new entity, a polaron. This quasiparticle plays an important role in the spectral function of high-Tc superconductors as well as in colossal-magnetoresistance in manganites. For impurities in a fermionic bath, the attention so far has been mostly on heavy or immobile impurities which exhibit Anderson's orthogonal…
We exploit a time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopic technique to study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of an ultracold two-component Fermi gas, selectively quenched to strong repulsion along the upper branch of a broad Feshbach resonance. For critical interactions, we find the rapid growth of short-range anti-correlations between repulsive fermions to initially overcome concurrent pairing processes. At longer evolution times, these two competing mechanisms appear to macroscopically coexist in a short-range correlated state of fermions and pairs, unforeseen thus far. Our work provides fundament…
The problem of an impurity particle moving through a bosonic medium plays a fundamental role in physics. However, the canonical scenario of a mobile impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) has not yet been realized. Here, we use radio frequency spectroscopy of ultracold bosonic $^{39}$K atoms to experimentally demonstrate the existence of a well-defined quasiparticle state of an impurity interacting with a BEC. We measure the energy of the impurity both for attractive and repulsive interactions, and find excellent agreement with theories that incorporate three-body correlations, …
We consider a single spin-down impurity atom interacting via an attractive, short-range potential with a spin-up Fermi sea in two dimensions (2D). Similarly to 3D, we show how the impurity can form a metastable state (the "repulsive polaron") with energy greater than that of the non-interacting impurity. Moreover, we find that the repulsive polaron can acquire a finite momentum for sufficiently weak attractive interactions. Even though the energy of the repulsive polaron can become sizeable, we argue that saturated ferromagnetism is unfavorable in 2D because of the polaron's finite lifetime an…
Realising strong photon-photon interactions in a solid-state setting is a major goal with far reaching potential for optoelectronic applications. Using Landau's quasiparticle framework combined with a microscopic many-body theory, we explore the interactions between exciton-polaritons and trions in a two-dimensional semiconductor injected with an electron gas inside a microcavity. We show that particle-hole excitations in the electron gas mediate an attractive interaction between the polaritons, whereas a trion-polariton interaction mediated by the exchange of an electron is either repulsive o…
We explore the interplay between tunneling and interatomic interactions in the dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction. We tune the scattering length of an atomic $^{39}$K Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well trap to investigate regimes inaccessible to other superconducting or superfluid systems. In the limit of small-amplitude oscillations, we study the transition from Rabi to plasma oscillations by crossing over from attractive to repulsive interatomic interactions. We observe a critical slowing down in the oscillation frequency by increasing the strength of an attractive inte…
The driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model can be experimentally realized with either negative or positive onsite detunings, inter-site hopping energies, and onsite interaction energies. Here we use one-dimensional matrix product density operators to perform a fully quantum investigation of the dependence of the non-equilibrium steady states of this model on the signs of these parameters. Due to a symmetry in the Lindblad master equation, we find that simultaneously changing the sign of the interaction energies, hopping energies, and chemical potentials leaves the local boson number distributio…
We investigate the polarization of a two-component three-dimensional fermionic gas made of repulsive alkali-metal atoms. The two pseudo-spin components correspond to two hyperfine states which are Rabi coupled. The presence of Rabi coupling implies that only the total number of atoms is conserved and a quantum phase transition between states dominated by spin-polarization along different axses is possible. By using a variational Hartree-Fock scheme we calculate analytically the ground-state energy of the system and determine analytically and numerically the conditions under which there is this…
We investigate the properties of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. The interactions between bosons are modeled by a hard sphere potential with scattering length $a$, whereas the interactions between the impurity and the bosons are modeled by a short-range, square-well potential where both the sign and the strength of the scattering length $b$ can be varied by adjusting the well depth. We characterize the attractive and the repulsive polaron branch by calculating the binding energy and the effective mass of the impurity. Furthermore…
When mobile impurities are introduced and coupled to a Fermi sea, new quasiparticles known as Fermi polarons are formed. There are two interesting, yet drastically different regimes of the Fermi polaron problem: (I) the attractive polaron (AP) branch, connected to pairing phenomena spanning the crossover from BCS superfluidity to the Bose-Einstein condensation of molecules; and (II) the repulsive branch (RP), which underlies the physics responsible for Stoner's itinerant ferromagnetism. Here, we study Fermi polarons in two dimensional systems, where many questions and debates regarding their n…
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional attractive Fermi-Hubbard model with spin-dependent hoppings and an on-site Rabi coupling using the density matrix renormalization group method. In particular, we show that even in the limit of one component being immobile the pair superfluidity can be resonantly enhanced when the Rabi coupling is on the order of the interaction strength just before the system starts to strongly polarize. We derive an effective spin-1/2 XXZ model in order to understand the ground-state properties in the strong attraction limit.
We investigate the formation of a Bose polaron when a single impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate is quenched from a non-interacting to an attractively interacting state in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance. We use a beyond-Fröhlich Hamiltonian to describe both sides of the resonance and a coherent-state variational ansatz to compute the time evolution of boson density profiles in position space. We find that on the repulsive side of the Feshbach resonance, the Bose polaron performs long-lived oscillations, which is surprising given that the two-body problem has only one bound state coupl…
We study the motion of a self-attractive Bose-Einstein condensate with pseudo-spin 1/2 driven by a synthetic Rabi (Zeeman-like) field. This field triggers the pseudo-spin dynamics resulting in a density redistribution between its components and, as a consequence, in changes of the overall density distribution. In the presence of an additional external potential, the latter produces a net force acting on the condensate and activates its displacement. As an example, here we consider the case of a one-dimensional condensate in a random potential.
We consider a weakly-interacting fermionic gas of alkali-metal atoms characterized by two hyper- fine states which are Rabi coupled. By using a Hartree approximation for the repulsive interaction we determine the zero-temperature equation of state of this Fermi gas in D spatial dimensions (D = 1, 2, 3). Then, adopting the Landau-Vlasov equation and hydrodynamic equations, we investi- gate the speed of first sound and zero sound. We show that the two sounds, which occur respectively in collisional and collisionless regimes, crucially depend on the interplay between interaction strength and Rabi…
We present the collective excitation spectrum analysis of binary Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings in a quasi-two-dimensional system. In particular, we investigate the role of SO and Rabi coupling strengths in determining the dynamical stability of the coupled BECs using Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory. Using the eigenergy of BdG spectrum, we confirm the existence of phonon, roton, and maxon modes with weak repulsive intra- and inter-species contact interactions. The depth of the minimum corresponding to the roton mode depends strongly on the coupling s…
We theoretically calculate and experimentally measure the beyond-mean-field (BMF) equation of state in a coherently-coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the regime where averaging of the interspecies and intraspecies coupling constants over the hyperfine composition of the single-particle dressed state predicts the exact cancellation of the two-body interaction. We show that with increasing the Rabi-coupling frequency $Ω$, the BMF energy density crosses over from the nonanalytic Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) scaling $\propto n^{5/2}$ to an expansion in integer powers of density, wher…
The devil's staircase is a fractal structure that characterizes the ground state of one-dimensional classical lattice gases with long-range repulsive convex interactions. Its plateaus mark regions of stability for specific filling fractions which are controlled by a chemical potential. Typically such staircase has an explicit particle-hole symmetry, i.e., the staircase at more than half-filling can be trivially extracted from the one at less than half filling by exchanging the roles of holes and particles. Here we introduce a quantum spin chain with competing short-range attractive and long-ra…
