Beauty quarks are considered as one of the best probes of the strongly interacting medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions because they are predominantly produced via initial hard scatterings. Measurements of B meson production provide information about the diffusion of beauty quarks and the flavor dependence of in-medium energy loss. In these studies, clarifying the hadronization mechanism is crucial for understanding the transport properties of beauty quarks. Measurements of $B^{0}_{s}$ production can shed light on the mechanisms of beauty recombination in the medium and provide information about strangeness enhancement in the quark-gluon plasma. In this talk, we will present a new measurement of the ratio of $B^{0}_{s}$ to $B^+$ mesons in PbPb collisions at 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector, using data recorded in 2018.
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is fully equipped to measure hard probes in the di-muon decay channel in the high multiplicity environment of nucleus-nucleus collisions. Such probes are especially relevant for studying the quark-gluon plasma since they are produced at early times and propagate through the medium, mapping its evolution. CMS is able to distinguish non-prompt from prompt J/psi in pp and PbPb collisions. We report here the nuclear modification factor of prompt J/psi in PbPb as a function of transverse momentum, rapidity, and the number of nucleons participating in the collision.
We summarize the results from the study of charmonium and bottomonium via the dimuon decay channel in PbPb collisions with the CMS experiment. We discuss the observation of sequential suppression of the Upsilon states. We present preliminary results of prompt J/psi and psi' production, as well as of non-prompt J/psis coming from the weak decay of b-quarks. This latter measurement is sensitive to b-quark energy loss. We discuss the results and compare to model predictions.
The CMS experiment at the LHC is a general-purpose apparatus with a set of large acceptance and high granularity detectors for hadrons, electrons, photons and muons, providing unique capabilities for both proton-proton and ion-ion collisions. Global event properties, detailed study of jet production and jet properties, isolated photons, quarkonia and weak bosons were measured and compared to pp data and Monte Carlo sim…
Measurements of charged dihadron DeltaEta-DeltaPhi correlations from the CMS collaboration are presented for PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair over a broad range of pseudorapidity and the full range of azimuthal angle. A significant correlated yield is observed for pairs of particles with small DeltaPhi but large longitudinal separation DeltaEta, commonly known as the "ridge". The ridge persists up to at least |DeltaEta| = 4 and the dependence of the ridge region shape and yield on collision centrality and transverse momentum has been measured. A Fourier a…

We present measurements of the nuclear modification factors RAA and RpA(PYTHIA) of b jets in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions, respectively, using the CMS detector. Jets from b-quark fragmentations are found by exploiting the long lifetime of the b-quark through tagging methods using distributions of the secondary vertex displacement. From these, b-jet cross-sections are calculated and compared to the pp cross-section from the 2.76 TeV pp data collected in 2013 and to a PYTHIA simulation at 5.02 TeV, where these center-of-mass energies correspond to those of the PbPb and pPb data. We obser…
The flavor dependence of jet quenching is a powerful handle to discriminate between models of parton energy loss in heavy-ion collisions. We demonstrate the capacity of CMS to identify jets initiated by bottom quarks using displaced vertices reconstructed in the silicon tracking system. The b-jet to inclusive jet ratio is measured in PbPb collisions and compared to pp collisions and simulations at the same center-of-mass energy.
Dijets in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV are studied with the CMS detector at the LHC. It is shown that the fragmentation functions of jets into charged particle tracks with transverse momenta pT > 4 GeV/c in PbPb collisions are similar to those in pp collisions, for both the leading and subleading jets. In addition, study of high statistics PbPb data acquired in 2011 shows that the quenching phenomenon exists up to highest jet pT values in excess of 300 GeV/c.
Isolated photon production is measured in pp and PbPb collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies E_T between 20 and 80 GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured E_T spectra are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon E_T-differential yields, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for all PbPb reaction centralities.
The study of charm production in heavy-ion collisions is considered an excellent probe for the properties of the hot and dense medium created in heavy-ion collisions. Measurements of D-meson nuclear modification can provide strong constraints into the mechanisms of in-medium energy loss and charm flow in the medium. The measurement of $D^0$ elliptic flow in pPb collisions helps us understand the strength of charm quarks coupling to significantly reduced systems which demonstrate hydrodynamic properties. In this paper, the measurements of the $D^0$ nuclear modification factor in PbPb collisions…
The LHC offers unique opportunities for studying the properties of hot QCD matter created in Pb+Pb collisions at extreme temperatures and very low parton momentum fractions. Jets are an important tool to probe the hot, dense medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. At the collision energies available at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), there is copious production of hard processes, such that high p_T jets may be differentiated from the heavy-ion underlying event. The multipurpose Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is well designed to measure hard scattering processes with its high quality calorimeters and high precision silicon tracker. Jet quenching has been studied in CMS in PbPb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)= 2.76 TeV. As a function of centralit…
The energy loss of fast partons traversing the strongly interacting matter produced in high-energy nuclear collisions is one of the most interesting observables to probe the nature of the produced medium. The multipurpose Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is well designed to measure these hard scattering processes with its high resolution calorimeters and high precision silicon tracker. Analyzing data from pp and PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV parton energy loss is observed as a significant imbalance of dijet transverse momentum. In nucleus-nucleus collisions, the linear dependence found for the elliptic flow harmonic of both positive or negative charged particles as a function of event charge asymmetry is predicted by the phenomenon known as the Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) due to its induced electric quadrupole moment. Here, the event charge asymmetry $A_{\rm ch}$ is defined as $\frac{N_{+}-N_{-}}{N_{+}+N_{-}}$, where $N_{+}$ and $N_{-}$ are the number of positive and negative charged particles, respectively. However, other scenarios are also possible and may provide alternative explanations for the experimental result…
Charged particle transverse momentum (pT) spectra have been measured by CMS for pp and PbPb collisions at the same sqrt(sNN)=2.76 TeV collision energy per nucleon pairs. Calorimeter-based jet triggers are employed to enhance the statistical reach of the high-pT measurements. The nuclear modification factor (R_AA) is obtained in bins of collision centrality for the PbPb data sample dividing by the measured pp reference spectrum. In the range pT = 5-10 GeV/c, the charged particle yield in the most central PbPb collisions is suppressed by up to a factor of 7. At higher pT, this suppression is sig…
The energy loss of partons in high-energy nuclear collisions is one of the most interesting observables to probe the nature of the produced medium. Analyzing data from PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV, recorded with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector, parton energy loss is observed as a significant imbalance of dijet transverse momentum. To gain further understanding of the parton energy loss mechanism and how it manifests itself in the distribution of final state particles, fragmentation functions are studied for the leading and subleading jet in bins of dijet imba…

In addition, the J/ψ and Υ production in PbPb at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76 TeV and pp collisions at the same per nucleon energy are measured and compared. Prompt and non-prompt J/ψ contributi…
Measurements of charged dihadron angular correlations are presented in proton-proton (pp) and Lead-Lead (PbPb) collisions, over a broad range of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle, using the CMS detector at the LHC. In very high multiplicity pp events at center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, a striking "ridge"-like structure emerges in the two-dimensional correlation function for particle pairs with intermediate pt of 1-3 GeVc, in the kinematic region 2.0<|Δη|<4.8 and small Δϕ, which is similar to observations in heavy-ion collisions. Studies of this new effect as a function of particle transverse m…

Such probes are especially relevant for studying the quark-gluon plasma since they are produced at early times and propagate through the medium, mapping its evolution. CMS has measured the nuclear modification factors of non-prompt J/psi (from b-hadron decays) and prompt J/psi in PbPb collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV. For prompt J/psi with relatively high p_T (p_T=6.5-30 GeV/c), a strong, centrality-dependent suppression …
In studies of the dense medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, photons are important hard probes, since they are not expected to be modified by the medium. The measurement of isolated prompt photon production in PbPb collisions provides a test of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) and the information to constrain the nuclear parton distribution functions. CMS has shown photon purity measurement capabilities in pp collisions using the shower shape templates. In PbPb co llisions at CMS, this technique was applied for the first time in heavy ion collisions. We report …
A measurement is presented of the charged hadron multiplicity in hadronic PbPb collisions, as a function of pseudorapidity and centrality, at a collision energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair. The data sample is collected using the CMS detector and a minimum-bias trigger, with the CMS solenoid off. The number of charged hadrons is measured both by counting the number of reconstructed particle hits and by forming hit doublets of pairs of layers in the pixel detector. The two methods give consistent results. The charged hadron multiplicity density dN(ch)/d eta, evaluated at eta=0 for head-on colli…
Jet studies provide an experimental method to explore the features of energy loss in the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma. Recent jet results from 2.76 TeV PbPb and pp collisions measured with the CMS detector are presented. Jets in the most head-on (central) PbPb collisions are quenched in comparison to pp, and the jets fragment in different ways in the two systems. Measurements from pPb collisions at 5.02 TeV show that the jet and charged particle suppression seen in central PbPb measurements are not due to initial state nuclear effects.
Short range correlations of identified charged hadrons in pp (sqrt(s) = 0.9, 2.76, and 7 TeV), pPb (sqrt(sNN) = 5.02 TeV), and peripheral PbPb collisions (sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV) are studied with the CMS detector at the LHC. Charged pions, kaons, and protons at low pT and in laboratory pseudorapidity |eta| < 1 are identified via their energy loss in the silicon tracker. The two-particle correlation functions show effects of quantum statistics, Coulomb interaction, and also indicate the role of multi-body resonance decays and mini-jets. The characteristics of the one-, two-, and three-dimensional…

Charged pions, kaons, and protons at low momentum and in laboratory pseudorapidity $|η| < 1$ are identified via their energy loss in the silicon tracker. Nonlinear response coefficients of higher-order anisotropy harmonics for charged particles are measured in PbPb collisions at 2.76 and 5.02 TeV as a function of transverse momentum and collision centrality. The nonlinear response coefficients are obtained from $v_{n}$ harmonics measured with respect to their own plane and the mixed harmonics. Additionally, at 5.02 TeV PbPb collisions, a significant negative skewness is observed by a fine splitting between $v_{2}\{4\}$ and $v_{2}\{6\}$ cumulants. The elliptic flow skewness is measured up to 60\% centrality. The results are compared with hydrody…
This paper presents the CMS measurements of quarkonia and open heavy flavor production in \pp, \pPb, and \PbPb collisions at \sqrtsnn = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV. A brief outlook of the near-future CMS heavy flavor physics analyses is provided at the end.
Jet production in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV was studied with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 inverse microbarns. Jets are reconstructed using the energy deposited in the CMS calorimeters and studied as a function of collision centrality. With increasing collision centrality, a striking imbalance in dijet transverse momentum is observed, consistent with jet quenching. The observed effect extends from the lower cut-off used in this study (jet transverse momentum = 120 GeV/c) up to the s…
The cross section for coherent J/psi photoproduction accompanied by at least one neutron on one side of the interaction point and no neutron activity on the other side, X[n]0[n], is measured with the CMS experiment in ultra-peripheral PbPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 159 inverse microbarns, collected during the 2011 PbPb run. The J/psi mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, while neutrons are detected using zero degree calorimeters. The measured cross section is dsigma[coh,X[n]0[n]] / d…

A comparison of the relative yields of Upsilon resonances in the mu(+) mu(-) decay channel in PbPb and pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 2.76 TeV, is performed with data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Using muons of transverse momentum above 4 GeV/c and pseudorapidity below 2.4, the double ratio of the Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) excited states to the Upsilon(1S) ground state in PbPb and pp collisions,(Upsilon(2S+3S)/Upsilon(1S)[PbPb])/(Upsilon(2S+3S)/Upsilon(1S)[pp]), is found to be 0.31 - 0.15 + 0.19 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.). The probability to obtain …
We report the measurements of nuclear modification factors of the Z bosons, isolated photons and charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV PbPb collisions with the CMS detector. The nuclear modification factors are constructed by dividing the PbPb $p_T$ spectra, normalized to the number of binary collisions, by the pp references. No modifications are observed in isolated photon and Z boson production with respected to the pp references while large suppression is observed in the charged particles.
For the first time a principle-component analysis is used to separate out different orthogonal modes of the two-particle correlation matrix from heavy ion collisions. The analysis uses data from sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV PbPb and sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV pPb collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been extensively used to study hydrodynamic flow in heavy ion collisions. Recently it has been shown that the expected factorization of two-particle results into a product of the constituent single-particle anisotropies is broken. The new information…
The spectra of charged particles produced within the pseudorapidity window abs(eta) < 1 at sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV are measured using 404 inverse microbarns of PbPb and 27.4 inverse picobarns of pp data collected by the CMS detector at the LHC in 2015. The spectra are presented over the transverse momentum ranges spanning 0.5 < pt < 400 GeV in pp and 0.7 < pt < 400 GeV in PbPb collisions. The corresponding nuclear modification factor, R[AA], is measured in bins of collision centrality. The R[AA] in the 5% most central collisions shows a maximal suppression by a factor of 7-8 in the pt region of…
In this article, we report the inclusive charged hadron and isolated photon spectra at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV PbPb collisions measured with the CMS detector at LHC. Charged particle momentum spectra are compared to a constructed reference measurement of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV by using a combination of $x_T$ scaling and direct interpolation at fixed $p_{T}$. Photon results are compared to next to leading order calculations at the same center of mass energy. Nuclear modification factors ($R_{AA}$) are calculated to study the properties of the medium. While a large supp…
In a relativistic heavy ion collision, heavy flavor (charm and bottom) quarks are mostly created via hard processes at the early stage of the collisions. We present the latest results of the azimuthal anisotropy coefficients $v_{\text{n}}$ for prompt and nonprompt $\text{D}^{0}$ mesons in PbPb, pPb, and pp collisions from the CMS experiment. The studies are about collectivity phenomena in smaller systems (pp and pPb collisions), searches for the effects of very strong electromagnetic fields created in the initial stages of ultrarelativistic PbPb collisions, and charm quark energy loss in the q…
A search for Z bosons in the mu^+mu^- decay channel has been performed in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre of mass energy = 2.76 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, in a 7.2 inverse microbarn data sample. The number of opposite-sign muon pairs observed in the 60--120 GeV/c^2 invariant mass range is 39, corresponding to a yield per unit of rapidity (y) and per minimum bias event of (33.8 +/- 5.5 (stat) +/- 4.4 (syst)) 10^{-8}, in the |y|<2.0 range. Rapidity, transverse momentum, and centrality dependencies are also measured. The results agree with next-to-leading order QCD calculat…
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) has measured numerous quarkonium states via their decays into muon pairs in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV. Quarkonia are especially relevant for studying the quark-gluon plasma since they are produced at early times and propagate through the medium, mapping its evolution. Non-prompt J/psi from b-hadron decays show a strong suppression in the transverse momentum range (6.5 < p_T < 30 GeV/c) when compared to the yield in pp collisions scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions. This suppression is related to the in-medium b-quar…
Azimuthal angle correlations of charged hadrons were measured in $\sqrt s_{NN}$ = 2.76 TeV PbPb collisions by the CMS experiment. The distributions exhibit anisotropies that are correlated with the event-by-event orientation of the reaction plane. Several methods were employed to extract the strength of the signal: the event-plane, cumulant and Lee-Yang Zeros methods. These methods have different sensitivity to correlations that are not caused by the collective motion in the system (non-flow correlations due to jets, resonance decays, and quantum correlations). The second Fourier coefficient o…
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) has measured the suppression of the bottomonium states Y(1S), Y(2S), and Y(3S) in PbPb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV relative to pp collisions, scaled by the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon collisions. CMS observed a stronger suppression for the weaker bound Y(2S) and Y(3S) states than for the ground state Y(1S). Such "sequential melting" has been predicted to be a clear signature for the creation of a quark-gluon plasma. The suppression of the Y(1S) and Y(2S) has been measured as a function of collision centrality for Y in the rapidity interval |y| < …
This writeup summarizes recent CMS results on quarkonia measurements in pp, pPb and PbPb collisions at LHC. The excellent muon detection capability of CMS allows measurement of charmonia states at high transverse momentum ($p_T$) while the $Υ$ states can be reconstructed starting at zero $p_T$. The absolute and relative yields of different charmonia and bottomonia states modified in PbPb collisions (over pp collisions) are described. The vertexing capability of CMS enables measurement of B meson energy loss via its decay to J/$ψ$. An overview of these measurements is given. How these measureme…
The production of electroweak bosons (photons, W and Z particles) in PbPb and pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV per interacting nucleon pair has been measured with the CMS detector at the LHC. Direct photon production is studied using samples of isolated photons. W and Z bosons are reconstructed through their leptonic decay into muons. Their production rate in PbPb data is studied as a function of the centrality of the collision and compared to that in pp interactions, once normalized by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon interactions. The results are also compared to next-to-leading-order…
Charge-dependent anisotropy Fourier coefficients ($v_n$) of particle azimuthal distributions are measured in pPb and PbPb collisions at $ \sqrt{\smash[b]{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}} = $ 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The normalized difference in the second-order anisotropy coefficients ($v_2$) between positively and negatively charged particles is found to depend linearly on the observed event charge asymmetry with comparable slopes for both pPb and PbPb collisions over a wide range of charged particle multiplicity. In PbPb, the third-order anisotropy coefficient, $v_3$, shows a similar l…
The first measurement of jet shapes, defined as the fractional transverse momentum radial distribution, for inclusive jets produced in heavy-ion collisions is presented. Data samples of PbPb and pp collisions, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 150 inverse microbarns and 5.3 inverse picobarns respectively, were collected at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm with a distance parameter R = 0.3, and the jet shapes are measured for charged particles with transverse moment…
Jet production in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV was studied using the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 inverse microbarn. Dijets were reconstructed using the CMS calorimeters, and a significant energy imbalance was observed between the leading jet and the away-side jet with increasing centrality. Correlation studies of jets and tracks reveal that the energy of the away-side jet is redistributed to lower pt and wider angle outside of the jet cone.
First measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy of neutral pions produced in PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV are presented. The amplitudes of the second Fourier component (v2) of the neutral pion azimuthal distributions are extracted using an event-plane technique. The values of v2 are studied as a function of the neutral pion transverse momentum (pt) for different classes of collision centrality in the kinematic range 1.6 < pt < 8.0 GeV, within the pseudorapidity interval abs(eta) < 0.8. The CMS measurements of v2(pt) are similar to previously reported neut…
Isolated photon production is measured in proton-proton and lead-lead collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energies of 2.76 TeV in the pseudorapidity range |eta|<1.44 and transverse energies ET between 20 and 80 GeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measured ET spectra are found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. The ratio of PbPb to pp isolated photon ET-differential yields, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, is consistent with unity for all PbPb reaction centralities.
The transverse momentum spectra of charged particles have been measured in pp and PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC. In the transverse momentum range pt = 5-10 GeV/c, the charged particle yield in the most central PbPb collisions is suppressed by up to a factor of 5 compared to the pp yield scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions. At higher pt, this suppression is significantly reduced, approaching roughly a factor of 2 for particles with pt in the range pt=40-100 GeV/c.
The transverse momentum pT spectra of charged particles is measured by CMS as a function of collision centrality in PbPb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV. The results are compared to a pp reference spectrum, constructed by interpolation between sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 7 TeV measurements. The nuclear modification factor RAA is constructed by dividing the PbPb pT spectrum, normalized to the number of binary collisions (Ncoll), by the pp spectrum. Measured RAA in 0-5% centrality bin is compared to several theoretical predictions.
First measurements of dihadron correlations for charged particles are presented for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity, Delta(eta), and the full range of relative azimuthal angle, Delta(phi). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side (Delta(phi) approximately pi) azimuthal correlation is observed at all Delta(eta), as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in Delta(eta) are observed for particles with simi…

The measurement is performed in the D$^0$ meson $p_\mathrm{t}$ range of 2-100 GeV and in the rapidity range of $|y| < $1. The pp (PbPb) dataset used for this analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 27.4 pb$^{-1}$ (530 $μ$b$^{-1}$). The measured D$…
The relative modification of the prompt psi(2S) and J/psi yields from pp to PbPb collisions, at the center of mass energy of 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair, is presented. The analysis is based on pp and PbPb data samples collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 28.0 inverse picobarns and 464 inverse microbarns, respectively. The double ratio of measured yields of prompt charmonia reconstructed through their decays into muon pairs, (N[psi(2S)]/N[J/psi])[PbPb] / (N[psi(2S)]/N[J/psi])[pp], is determined as a function of PbPb collision centrality a…
The B$_\mathrm{c}^+$ meson is observed for the first time in heavy ion collisions. Data from the CMS detector are used to study the production of the B$_\mathrm{c}^+$ meson in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 TeV, via the B$_\mathrm{c}^+$ $\to$ (J/$ψ$ $\to$ $μ^+μ^-$)$μ^+ν_μ$ decay. The B$_\mathrm{c}^+$ nuclear modification factor, derived from the PbPb-to-pp ratio of production cross sections, is measured in two bins of the trimuon transverse momentum and of the PbPb collision centrality. The B$_\m…
The cross sections for $Υ$(1S), $Υ$(2S), and $Υ$(3S) production in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_\mathrm{NN}}} =$ 5.02 TeV have been measured using the CMS detector at the LHC. The nuclear modification factors, R$_\mathrm{AA}$, derived from the PbPb-to-pp ratio of yields for each state, are studied as functions of meson rapidity and transverse momentum, as well as PbPb collision centrality. The yields of all three states are found to be significantly suppressed, and compatible with a sequential ordering of the suppression, R$_\mathrm{AA}$($Υ$(1S)) $>$ R$_\mat…

Measurements of fragmentation functions for jets associated with an isolated photon are presented for the first time in pp and PbPb collisions. The analysis uses data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. Fragmentation functions are obtained for jets with p$_\mathrm{T}^\text{jet} >$ 30 GeV in events containing an isolated photon with p$_\mathrm{T}^γ>$ 60 GeV, using charged tracks with transverse momentum p$_\mathrm{T}^\text{trk} >$ 1 GeV in a cone around the jet axis. The association with an isolated photon constrains the initia…
Jet charge, defined as the momentum-weighted sum of the electric charges of particles inside a jet is sensitive to the electric charge of the initiating parton and can be used to study the color charge dependence of the parton energy loss in the QGP. In this paper, the first measurements of jet charge in heavy-ion collisions are presented using lead-lead (PbPb) collision data and compared to results from proton-proton (pp) data at the same collision energy. The measurements are unfolded for detector and background effects and are studied differentially in $p_\mathrm{T}$ and additionally as a f…
