We report the measurements of nuclear modification factors of the Z bosons, isolated photons and charged particles in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV PbPb collisions with the CMS detector. The nuclear modification factors are constructed by dividing the PbPb $p_T$ spectra, normalized to the number of binary collisions, by the pp references. No modifications are observed in isolated photon and Z boson production with respected to the pp references while large suppression is observed in the charged particles.
The structure of the CMS inner tracking system has been studied using nuclear interactions of hadrons striking its material. Data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded in 2015 at the LHC are used to reconstruct millions of secondary vertices from these nuclear interactions. Precise positions of the beam pipe and the inner tracking system elements, such as the pixel detector support tube, and barrel pixel detector inner shield and support rails, are determined using these vertices. These measurements are important for detector simulations, detector upgrades…
We have studied the transverse-momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) dependence of the inclusive J/$ψ$ production in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV, in three center-of-mass rapidity ($y_{\rm cms}$) regions, down to zero $p_{\rm T}$. Results in the forward and backward rapidity ranges ($2.03 < y_{\rm cms} < 3.53$ and $-4.46 <y_{\rm cms}< -2.96$) are obtained by studying the J/$ψ$ decay to $μ^+μ^-$, while the mid-rapidity region ($-1.37 < y_{\rm cms} < 0.43$) is investigated by measuring the ${\rm e}^+{\rm e}^-$ decay channel. The $p_{\rm T}$ dependence of the J/$ψ$ production cross section …
The measurement of heavy-flavour production and nuclear modification factor in heavy-ion collisions provides insights into the mechanisms of parton energy loss in the hot and dense medium formed in these collisions. ALICE results on heavy-flavour decay electrons and muons and on D mesons are presented.
The nuclear modification factors R_{AA} and R_{CP} have been used to measure medium-induced suppression in heavy-ion collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200GeV which was among the earliest evidence for the existence of a strongly interacting medium called a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Nuclear modification factors for asymmetric collisions (R_{dA}) have measured the Cronin Effect, an enhancement of high transverse momentum particle yields in deuteron-gold collisions relative to proton-proton collisions. A similar enhancement is observed in data presented in these proceedings and competes with the quench…
The production of muons from heavy-flavour hadron decays in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{\textit s}_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV was studied for $2 < p_{\rm T} < 16$ GeV/$c$ with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The measurement was performed at forward (p-going direction) and backward (Pb-going direction) rapidity, in the ranges of rapidity in the center-of-mass system (cms) $2.03<y_{\rm cms}<3.53$ and $-4.46<y_{\rm cms}<-2.96$, respectively. The production cross sections and nuclear modification factors are presented as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$). At forward rapidity, the nuclear…
The energy loss of partons in high-energy nuclear collisions is one of the most interesting observables to probe the nature of the produced medium. Analyzing data from PbPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV, recorded with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector, parton energy loss is observed as a significant imbalance of dijet transverse momentum. To gain further understanding of the parton energy loss mechanism and how it manifests itself in the distribution of final state particles, fragmentation functions are studied for the leading and subleading jet in bins of dijet imba…
Charged particle transverse momentum (pT) spectra have been measured by CMS for pp and PbPb collisions at the same sqrt(sNN)=2.76 TeV collision energy per nucleon pairs. Calorimeter-based jet triggers are employed to enhance the statistical reach of the high-pT measurements. The nuclear modification factor (R_AA) is obtained in bins of collision centrality for the PbPb data sample dividing by the measured pp reference spectrum. In the range pT = 5-10 GeV/c, the charged particle yield in the most central PbPb collisions is suppressed by up to a factor of 7. At higher pT, this suppression is sig…
These proceedings report recent studies performed by the ALICE, ATLAS and CMS experiments on jet substructure in pp and Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV. The dependence of the modification of the jet shape on the dijet transverse moment um asymmetry is presented. Measurements of particles recoiling against the Z boson without being constrained to jet cone delimitations are shown. Fully-corrected measurements of the N-subjettiness within anti-kt R = 0.4 charged-particle jets are also described.
The ALICE experiment has measured charm and beauty production in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 and 7 TeV and sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV, respectively, via the exclusive reconstruction of hadronic D meson decays and semi-leptonic D and B meson decays. In this contribution, recent results on the nuclear modification factor for open charmed mesons and heavy-flavour decay electrons at central rapidity and muons at forward rapidity are presented and discussed.
The ATLAS detector at the LHC obtained the sample of p+Pb data at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}={}$5.02TeV with integrated luminosity of 25nb${}^{-1}$, which can be compared to the pp data obtained by interpolating pp measurements at $\sqrt{s}={}$2.76TeV and 7TeV. Due to the excellent capabilities of the ATLAS detector, and its stable operation in heavy ion as well as proton-proton physics runs, the data allow measurements of the nuclear modification factor, ratio of heavy ion charged particle spectra divided by pp reference, in different centrality classes over a wide range of rapidity. The charged particle…
We discuss the implications of the preliminary CMS dijet data from 5.02 TeV pp and pPb collisions for gluon PDFs of the proton and nuclei. The preliminary pp data show a discrepancy with NLO predictions using for example the CT14 PDFs. We find that this difference cannot be accommodated within the associated scale uncertainties and debate the possible changes needed in the gluon PDF. A similar discrepancy is found between the CMS pPb data and NLO predictions e.g. with the EPPS16 nuclear modifications imposed on the CT14 proton PDFs. When a nuclear modification ratio of the pp and pPb data is c…
We report recent ALICE results on primary charged particle and neutral meson production in pp, p--Pb, Pb--Pb and Xe--Xe collisions at LHC energies. In this article, measurements of the nuclear modification factors $R_{\rm AA}$ of primary charged particles and of light neutral mesons in Pb--Pb, in Xe--Xe and in p--Pb collisions in a wide $p_{\rm T}$ range and different centrality classes are discussed. We compare the nuclear modification factors obtained for different collision systems as a function of transverse momentum, collision centrality as well as charged particle multiplicity (${\rm d}N…
The ALICE collaboration has studied the inclusive J/$ψ$ and $ψ(\mathrm{2S})$ production in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the CERN LHC. The J/$ψ$ measurement is performed in the $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ ( - 4.46 < $y_{cms}$ < - 2.96 and 2.03 < $y_{cms}$ < 3.53 ) and in the $e^{+}e^{-}$ ( - 1.37 < $y_{cms}$ < 0.46 ) decay channels, down to zero transverse momentum. The results are in fair agreement with theoretical predictions based on nuclear shadowing, as well as with models including, in addition, a contribution from partonic energy loss. Finally, the $ψ(\mathrm{2S})$ measurement in th…
The properties of the hot and dense QCD medium formed in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, as well as the mechanism of in-medium partonic energy loss, can be accessed via the study of the D mesons nuclear modification factor. The ALICE experiment has measured D meson production in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ =7 and 2.76 TeV and at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV, respectively, via the exclusive reconstruction of hadronic decay channels. D mesons are selected by exploiting the high-resolution tracking performance and the hadron identification capabilities of the ALICE det…
The ALICE experiment has measured the D meson production in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC at {\surd}s = 7 and 2.76 TeV and {\surd}sNN = 2.76 TeV respectively, via the exclusive reconstruction of hadronic decay channels. The analyses of the D0{\to}K-pi+ and D+{\to}K-pi+pi+ channels will be described and the preliminary results for the D0 and D+ nuclear modification factor will be presented.
The measurement of D meson production provides key tests for parton energy-loss models, which predict that charm quarks should experience less in-medium energy loss than light quarks and gluons. The ALICE experiment has measured the production of prompt D^(0), D^(+) and D^(*+) mesons in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC at sqrt(s) = 7 and 2.76 TeV and at sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV, respectively, via the exclusive reconstruction of their hadronic decay. The pT-differential production yields in the range 2 < pT < 16 GeV/c at central rapidity, |y| < 0.5, were used to calculate the nuclear modificatio…
Inclusive J/$ψ$ production has been studied with the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at the nucleon-nucleon center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed in the center of mass rapidity domains $2.03<y_{\rm cms}<3.53$ and $-4.46<y_{\rm cms}<-2.96$, down to zero transverse momentum, studying the $μ^+μ^-$ decay mode. In this paper, the J/$ψ$ production cross section and the nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm pPb}$ for the rapidities under study are presented. While at forward rapidity, corresponding to the proton direction, a suppression of …
The charged hadron spectra in $p$+Pb and $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=\sqrt{s}=5.02$TeV are measured with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The measurements are performed with $p$+Pb data recorded in 2013 with an integrated luminosity of 25nb${}^{-1}$ and $pp$ data recorded in 2015 with an integrated luminosity of 28pb${}^{-1}$. The $p$+Pb results are compared to $pp$ spectra, presented as a ratio of transverse momentum distributions in the two systems scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, the nuclear modification factor $R_{p \mathrm{Pb}}$. The study of $R_\mathrm{pPb…
The cross section for coherent J/psi photoproduction accompanied by at least one neutron on one side of the interaction point and no neutron activity on the other side, X[n]0[n], is measured with the CMS experiment in ultra-peripheral PbPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 159 inverse microbarns, collected during the 2011 PbPb run. The J/psi mesons are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, while neutrons are detected using zero degree calorimeters. The measured cross section is dsigma[coh,X[n]0[n]] / d…
ALICE is the dedicated heavy-ion experiment at the LHC. Due to the unique particle identification capabilities of the central barrel detectors (|eta|<0.9), J/psi can be measured in the di-electron channel in the very demanding environment of central Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. In addition J/psi are measured at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4) with a dedicated muon spectrometer. ALICE is the only LHC experiment with an acceptance for J/psi that reaches down to p_T=0 at both, mid- and forward rapidity. Preliminary results on the nuclear modification factor of the inclusive J/psi production at mid- an…
The transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm T}$) distribution of primary charged particles is measured in minimum bias (non-single-diffractive) p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The $p_{\mathrm T}$ spectra measured near central rapidity in the range $0.5<p_{\mathrm T}<20$ GeV/$c$ exhibit a weak pseudorapidity dependence. The nuclear modification factor $R_{\mathrm{pPb}}$ is consistent with unity for $p_{\mathrm T}$ above 2 GeV/$c$. This measurement indicates that the strong suppression of hadron production at high $p_{\mathrm T}$ observed in Pb-P…
Heavy quarks, i.e. charm and beauty, are sensitive probes of the medium produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. They are produced in the early stage of the collisions and are expected to experience the whole collision evolution interacting with the medium constituents via both elastic and inelastic processes. The nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$) and the elliptic flow ($v_{2}$) are two of the main experimental observables that allow us to investigate the interaction strength of heavy quarks with the medium. The ALICE collaboration measured the production and elliptic flow of ope…
Measurement of Z-boson production in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=8.16$ TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02$ TeV is reported. It is performed in the dimuon decay channel, through the detection of muons with pseudorapidity $-4 < η_μ < -2.5$ and transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}^μ > 20$ GeV/$c$ in the laboratory frame. The invariant yield and nuclear modification factor are measured for opposite-sign dimuons with invariant mass $60 < m^{μμ} < 120$ GeV$c^2$ and rapidity $2.5 < y_{cms}^{μμ} < 4$. They are presented as a function of rapidity and, for the Pb-Pb collis…
Differential invariant cross sections of light neutral mesons in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 8.16 TeV and in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV have been measured up to very high transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$). By combining independent reconstruction techniques available in ALICE using the EMCal and PHOS calorimeters as well as the central barrel tracking detectors, the combined spectra cover almost two orders of magnitude in $p_{\rm T}$ for the $π^{0}$ meson. The nuclear modification factor $R_{\text{pPb}}$ has been measured for the $π^{0}$ and $η$ mesons and is found t…
A measurement of beauty hadron production at mid-rapidity in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV is presented. The semi-inclusive decay channel of beauty hadrons into J/$ψ$ is considered, where the J/$ψ$ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at mid-rapidity down to transverse momenta of 1.3 GeV/$c$. The ${\rm {b\overline{b}}}$ production cross section at mid-rapidity, ${\rm d}σ_{\rm {b\overline{b}}}/{\rm d} y$, and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, $σ_{\rm {b\overline{b}}}$, are obtained. Th…
The heavy-flavour nuclear modification factor $R_{\rm pPb}$ has been measured with the ALICE detector in p--Pb collisions at the nucleon--nucleon center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the CERN LHC in a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range, as well as in several decay channels. $R_{\rm pPb}$ is consistent with unity within uncertainties at mid-rapidity and forward rapidity. In the backward region a slight enhancement of the yield of heavy-flavour decay muons is found in the region $2<p_{\rm T}<4$ GeV/$c$. The results are described within uncertainties by theoretical cal…
We compare the jet-path length and beam-energy dependence of the pion nuclear modification factor and a parton-jet nuclear modification factor at RHIC and LHC. We contrast predictions based on a linear pQCD and a highly non-linear hybrid-AdS holographic model of jet-energy loss. We find that both models require a reduction of the jet-medium coupling from RHIC to LHC to account for the measured pion nuclear modification factor. In case of the parton-jet nuclear modification factor, however, which serves as a lower bound for the LO jet nuclear modification factor of reconstructed jets, the extra…
Nuclear modification of structure functions in lepton scattering
In anticipating the upcoming proton-lead run at the LHC in the near future, we present predictions for the nuclear modification factor of transverse momentum spectrum of $Z^0$ production and transverse momentum broadening of vector boson ($J/ψ$, $Υ$, $W/Z^0$) production in proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5$ TeV, respectively. We find that the measurement of nuclear modification factor of $Z^0$ production provides a clean and unambiguous test of the nuclear anti-shadowing proposed in the recent EPS09. In addition, the dramatic difference in transverse momentum broadening between the heavy q…

We present results and predictions for the nuclear modification of the differential cross sections for inclusive light hadron and prompt photon production in minimum bias d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV and minimum bias p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5$ TeV at RHIC and LHC, respectively. Our calculations combine the leading order perturbative QCD formalism with cold nuclear matter effects that arise from the elastic, inelastic and coherent multiple scattering of partons in large nuclei. We find that a theoretical approach that includes the isospin effect, Cronin effect, cold nuclear ma…
Recent measurements of multiboson production from the CMS experiment will be presented, as well as limits on anomalous triple and quartic gauge couplings. Precision measurements of multiboson production allow a basic test of the Standard Model, where higher order QCD and electroweak corrections can be probed. In addition searches of physics beyond the Standard Model in multiboson final states rely on precise determination of the Standard Model multiboson processes. The presence of triple and quartic gauge couplings in multiboson production also allows for tests of modification of these vertice…
We propose a simple and model-independent procedure to account for the impact of the nuclear modification of the gluon density as encoded in nuclear collinear PDF sets on two-to-two partonic hard processes in proton-nucleus collisions. This applies to a good approximation to quarkonium, D and B meson production, generically referred to H. Our procedure consists in parametrising the square of the parton scattering amplitude, A_{gg -> H X} and constraining it from the proton-proton data. Doing so, we have been able to compute the corresponding nuclear modification factors for J/psi, Upsilon and …
We update our previous studies of nuclear-matter effects on J/Psi production in proton-nucleus for the recent LHC pPb runs at sqrt(s_NN)=5 TeV. We have analysed the effects of the modification of the gluon PDFs in nucleus, using an exact kinematics for a 2->2 process, namely g+g->J/Psi+g as expected from LO pQCD. This allows to constrain the transverse-momentum while computing the nuclear modification factor for different rapidities, unlike with the usual simplified kinematics. Owing to the absence of measurement in pp collisions at the same sqrt(s_NN) and owing to the expected significant unc…
In this paper, dedicated to the memory of the late Prof. Jean Cleymans, the nuclear modification factors, $R_{xA}$, are investigated for pion production in small system collisions, measured by PHENIX experiment at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider). The theoretical framework is the transverse momentum $k_T$-factorization formalism for hard processes at small momentum fraction, $x$. Evidence for collective expansion and thermal effects for pions, produced at equilibrium, is studied based on phenomenological parametrization of blast-wave type in the relaxation time approximation. The depende…
An accurate knowledge of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) is an essential ingredient of high energy physics calculations when the processes are involving nuclei in the initial state. It is well known now that the prompt photon production both in hadronic and nuclear collisions is a powerful tool for exploring the parton densities in the nucleon and nuclei especially of the gluon. In this work, we are going to perform a comprehensive study of the isolated prompt photon production in $ p $-Pb collisions at backward rapidities to find the best kinematic regions in which the experimen…
The question of the existence and properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) nowadays are the subject of detailed systematic study. Particles that contain strange quarks can be considered as a great tool to study flavor dependence of the parton energy loss in the QGP and strangeness enhancement. In this paper, we present the most recent PHENIX results on nuclear modification factors of $K^{\pm}$, $K^{*0}$, $ϕ$ mesons as a function of $p_T$ and the number of participants in $p$+$p$, $p$+Al, $^3$He+Au, Cu+Cu, Cu+Au, Au+Au, and U+U collisions at top RHIC energies. The light hadron production at h…
The physics motivation, detector design, triggers, calibration, alignment, simulation, and overall performance of the very forward CASTOR calorimeter of the CMS experiment are reviewed. The CASTOR Cherenkov sampling calorimeter is located very close to the LHC beam line, at a radial distance of about 1 cm from the beam pipe, and at 14.4 m from the CMS interaction point, covering the pseudorapidity range of $-$6.6 $\lt$ $η$ $\lt$ $-$5.2. It was designed to withstand high ambient radiation and strong magnetic fields. The performance of the detector in measurements of forward energy density, jets…
We report progress on nuclear structure functions, especially on their nuclear modifications and a new tensor structure function for the deuteron. To understand nuclear structure functions is an important step toward describing nuclei and QCD matters from low to high densities and from low to high energies in terms of fundamental quark and gluon degrees of freedom beyond conventional hadron and nuclear physics. It is also practically important for understanding new phenomena in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. Furthermore, since systematic errors of current neutrino-oscillatio…
We study nuclear modification factors for single $D$ meson and semileptonic decay lepton $l$ ($=e,μ$) production in minimum bias proton-nucleus (p$A$) collisions at the LHC in the color-glass-condensate (CGC) framework at leading order in strong coupling. In our numerical computations, transverse momentum ($k_\perp$) dependent multi-point Wilson line correlators are employed for describing target nucleus for p$A$ and proton for pp. The projectile proton is treated with unintegrated gluon distribution function, which is also $k_\perp$-dependent. The rapidity evolutions of these functions in the…
We investigate how the gravitational form factors of the nucleon undergo changes in nuclear matter, emphasizing the Abel transformation from the three-dimensional (3D) Breit frame to the two-dimensional (2D) light-front frame. Since the gravitational form factors reveal the mechanical structure of the nucleon, we examine also the medium modifications of the energy-momentum, pressure, and shear-force distributions. We scrutinize the stabilities of the nucleon in nuclear matter. For this purpose, we employ the in-medium modified SU(2) Skyrme model to study these mechanical quantities of the nucl…
In this article, we investigate the potential of low-mass lepton pair production in proton-ion collisions at the LHC to constrain nuclear modifications of parton densities. Similarly to prompt photon production, the transverse momentum spectrum is shown to be dominated by the QCD Compton process, but has virtually no fragmentation or isolation uncertainties. Depending on the orientation of the proton and ion beams and on the use of central or forward detector components, all interesting regions of nuclear effects (shadowing, antishadowing, isospin and EMC effects) can be probed. Ratios of cros…
We report the measurements of the prompt and non-prompt J/ψ and ψ(2S) nuclear modification factors (RAA) using pp and PbPb data and the RpPb using pPb data collected by CMS at the LHC. All measurements were performed via the di-muon decay channel. The RAA analysis is based on PbPb and pp data samples collected at 5.02 TeV in 2015, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 464 μb-1 and 28 pb-1. These measurements are performed in the di-muon rapidity range of |y| < 2.4 as a function of centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum (pT) from pT = 3 GeV/c in the most forward region and up to 50…
We discuss a CMS eXtension for Studying Energetic Neutrinos (CMS-XSEN). Neutrinos at the LHC are abundant and have unique features: their energies reach out to the TeV range, and the contribution of the τ flavour is sizeable. The measurement of their interaction cross sections has much physics potential. The pseudorapity range 4<|η|<5 is of particular interest since leptonic W decays provide an additional contribution to the neutrino flux from b and c production. A modest detector of 4.1x$10^{27}$ nucleons/cm$^{2}$, placed in the LHC tunnel, 25 m from the interaction point, around the focusing…
We provide predictions for the nuclear modification factor R_{pA} for pions and direct photon production in p+A collisions at LHC energy at midrapidity within different saturation models fitted to HERA data. In our approach we have no free parameters to adjust and all model parameters are fitted to other reactions. Our approach gives a rather good description of PHENIX data for R_{pA} for pions. We show that, in various saturation models, the pion Cronin enhancement is replaced by a moderate suppression at LHC energy at midrapidity due to gluon shadowing effects. However, Cronin enhancement of…
We investigate the gluonic structure of nuclei within a mean-field model of nuclear structure based upon the modification of the structure of a bound nucleon, with the nucleon described by the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. This approach has been shown to reproduce the European Muon Collaboration (EMC) effect, involving the ratio of the spin-independent structure functions of a heavier nucleus to that of the deuteron. It also predicts a significant nuclear modification for the spin structure functions, known as the polarized EMC effect. Here we report sizeable nuclear modifications of the gluon di…
