We theoretically study the effects of spin-orbit interactions on symmetry of a Cooper pair in a spin-singlet d-wave superconductor in two-dimension. The pairing symmetry is analyzed in terms of the anomalous Green's function which is obtained by solving the Gor'kov equation analytically. A spin-orbit interaction induces a spin-triplet p-wave pairing correlation in a uniform superconductor. An odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave pairing correlation appears at a surface of such superconductor as a result of breaking inversion symmetry locally. We also discuss a close relationship among the odd-frequency pairing correlation, chirality of surface bound states at the zero energy, and the anomalous proximity effect. The obtained results enable us to design a superconductor which causes the strong anomalous proximity effect.
We point out that essentially all multi-band superconductors have an odd-frequency pairing component, as follows from a general symmetry analysis of even- and odd-frequency pairing states. We show that odd-frequency superconducting pairing requires only a finite band hybridization, or scattering, and non-identical intraband order parameters, of which only one band needs to be superconducting. Under these conditions odd-frequency odd-interband pairing is always present. From a symmetry analysis we establish a complete reciprocity between parity in band-index and frequency.
We study superconductivity in spin-orbit-coupled systems in the vicinity of inversion symmetry breaking. We find that due to the presence of spin-orbit coupling, fluctuations of the incipient parity-breaking order generate an attractive pairing interaction in an odd-parity pairing channel, which competes with the s-wave pairing. We show that applying a Zeeman field suppresses the s-wave pairing and promotes the odd-parity superconducting state. Our work provides a new mechanism for odd-parity pairing and opens a route to novel topological superconductivity.
Recent experiments indicate that superconductivity in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ intercalated with Cu, Nb or Sr is nematic with rotational symmetry breaking. Motivated by this observation, we present a model study of nematic and chiral superconductivity induced by odd-parity fluctuations. We show that odd-parity fluctuations in the two-component $E_u$ representation of $D_{3d}$ crystal point group can generate attractive interaction in both the even-parity $s$-wave and odd-parity $E_u$ pairing channels, but repulsive interaction in other odd-parity pairing channels. Coulomb repulsion can suppress $s$-wave p…
In this article we review recent progress in the understanding of multiband superconductivity and its relationship to odd-frequency pairing. We begin our discussion by reviewing the emergence of odd-frequency pairing in a simple two-band model, providing a brief pedagogical overview of the formalism. We then examine several examples of multiband superconducting systems in each case describing, both, the origin of the band degree of freedom and the nature of the odd-frequency pairing. Throughout, we attempt to convey a unified picture of how odd-frequency pairing emerges in these materials and …
A theoretical study is presented on the odd-frequency spin-singlet pairing that arises in nonuniform even-frequency superconductors as a consequence of broken translation symmetry. The effect of the odd-frequency pairing on the superfluid density and the spin susceptibility is analyzed by using the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. It is shown that (1) the superfluid density is reduced by the formation of the odd-frequency singlet pairs and (2) the odd-frequency pairing increases the spin susceptibility even though its spin symmetry is singlet. The two unusual phenomena are related t…
Using a simple theoretical model, we demonstrate the emergence of odd-frequency pair amplitudes in conventional Josephson junctions both in the absence of a voltage (DC effect) and in the presence of a finite voltage (AC effect). In both cases, we find that odd-frequency interlead pairing emerges whenever a Josephson current is expected to flow. Additionally, we show that the interlead spin-susceptibility is directly influenced by the presence of the odd-frequency pair amplitudes. Specifically, we find that the spin-susceptibility is suppressed when the odd-frequency component is the largest. …
We show that quasiparticle interference (QPI) due to omnipresent weak impurities and probed by Fourier transform scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy acts as a direct experimental probe of bulk odd-frequency superconducting pairing. Taking the example of a conventional $s$-wave superconductor under applied magnetic field, we show that the nature of the QPI peaks can only be characterized by including the odd-frequency pairing correlations generated in this system. In particular, we identify that the defining feature of odd-frequency pairing gives rise to a bias asymmetry in the QPI, …
We investigate an unusual symmetry of Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs) and find novel superconducting pairing structures. FeSCs have a minimal translational unit cell composed of two Fe atoms due to the staggered positions of anions with respect to the Fe plane. We study the physical consequences of the additional glide symmetry that further reduces the unit cell to have only one Fe atoms. In the regular momentum space, it not only leads to a particular orbital parity separated spectral function but also dictates orbital parity distinct pairing structures. Furthermore, it produces accompanying…
Recently, superconductivity with spontaneous time-reversal or parity symmetry breaking is attracting much attention owing to its exotic properties, such as nontrivial topology and nonreciprocal transport. Particularly fascinating phenomena are expected when the time-reversal and parity symmetry are simultaneously broken. This work shows that time-reversal symmetry-breaking mixed-parity superconducting states generally exhibit an unusual asymmetric Bogoliubov spectrum due to nonunitary interband pairing. For generic two-band models, we derive the necessary conditions for the asymmetric Bogoliub…
We study the emergence of odd-frequency superconducting pairing in UPt$_3$. Starting from a tight-binding model accounting for the nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry of UPt$_3$ and assuming an order parameter in the $E_{2u}$ representation, we demonstrate that odd-frequency pairing arises very generally, as soon as inter-sublattice hopping or spin-orbit coupling is present. We also show that in the low temperature superconducting $B$ phase, the presence of a chiral order parameter together with spin-orbit coupling, leads to additional odd-frequency pair amplitudes not present in the $A$ or $C$ pha…
The effects of spin independent hybridization potential and spin orbit coupling on two band superconductor with equal time s-wave inter band pairing order parameter is investigated theoretically. To study symmetry classes in two band superconductors the Gorkov equations are solved analytically. By defining spin singlet and spin triplet s wave order parameter due to two band degree of freedom the symmetry classes of Cooper pair are studied. For spin singlet case it is shown that spin independent hybridization generates Cooper pair belongs to even frequency spin singlet even momentum even band p…
In this letter, we investigate topological phases of full-gapped odd-parity superconductors, which are distinguished by the bulk topological invariants and the topologically protected gapless boundary states. Using the particle-hole symmetry, we introduce Z_2 invariants characterizing topological odd-parity superconductors without or with time-reversal invariance. For odd-parity superconductors, a combination of the inversion and the U(1) gauge symmetry is manifestly preserved, and the combined symmetry enables us to evaluate the Z_2 invariants from the knowledge of the Fermi surface structure…
In this paper, we investigate the relation between odd-frequency pairing and proximity effect in non-uniform Kitaev chain systems with a particular interest in the topological critical point. First, we correlate the odd-frequency pairing and Majorana fermion in a semi-infinite Kitaev chain, where we find that the spatial dependence of the odd-frequency pair amplitude coincides with that of the local density of states at low frequencies. Second, we demonstrate that, contrary to the standard view, the odd-frequency pair amplitude spreads into the bulk of a semi-infinite Kitaev chain at the topol…
The unusual superconducting state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has long been viewed as being analogous to a superfluid state in liquid $^3$He. Nevertheless, calculations based on this odd-parity state are presently unable to completely reconcile the properties of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Using a self-consistent quantum many-body scheme that employs realistic parameters, we are able to model several signature properties of the normal and superconducting states of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We find that the dominant component of the model superconducting state is of even parity and closely related to superconducting state for th…
The Meissner effect is one of the defining properties of superconductivity, with a conventional superconductor completely repelling an external magnetic field. In contrast to this diamagnetic behavior, odd-frequency superconducting pairing has often been seen to produce a paramagnetic Meissner effect, which instead makes the superconductor unstable due to the attraction of magnetic field. In this work we study how both even- and odd-frequency superconducting pairing contributes to the Meissner effect in a generic two-orbital superconductor with a tunable odd-frequency pairing component. By div…
We show that mixed-parity superconductors may exhibit equal-spin pair correlations that are odd-in-time and can be tuned by means of an applied field. The direction and the amplitude of the pair correlator in the spin space turn out to be strongly dependent on the symmetry of the order parameter, and thus provide a tool to identify different types of singlet-triplet mixed configurations. We find that odd-in-time spin-polarized pair correlations can be generated without magnetic inhomogeneities in superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrids when parity mixing is induced at the interface.
In several members of the pnictide materials, spin density wave order coexists with superconductivity over a range of dopings and temperature. In this paper we show that odd-frequency superconductivity emerges on the edges of pnictides in such a coexistence phase. In particular, the breaking of spin-rotation symmetry by SDW and translation symmetry by the edge can lead to the development of odd-frequency spin-triplet Cooper pairing on edges of superconducting pnictide samples. In this case, the odd-frequency pairing has even parity components, which are immune to disorder. Our results show tha…
In superconductors, electrons with spin ${s=1/2}$ form Cooper pairs whose spin structure is usually singlet (${S=0}$) or triplet (${S=1}$). When the electronic structure near the Fermi level is characterized by fermions with angular momentum ${j=3/2}$ due to strong spin-orbit interactions, novel pairing states such as even-parity quintet (${J=2}$) and odd-parity septet (${J=3}$) states become allowed. Prime candidates for such exotic states are half-Heusler superconductors, which exhibit unconventional superconducting properties, but their pairing nature remains unsettled. Here we show that th…
We investigate characteristic features in the spin response of doped three-dimensional topological insulators with odd-parity unequal-spin superconducting pairing, which are predicted to have gapless Majorana surface modes. These Majorana modes contribute to the local spin susceptibility, giving rise to a characteristic temperature behavior of the Knight shift and the spin-lattice relaxation time in magnetic resonance experiments. Because of their different decay lengths, the Majorana modes can be observed and clearly distinguished from the Dirac modes of the topological insulator by local pro…
A microscopic calculation and symmetry argument reveal superconductivity in the vicinity of parity-violating magnetic order. An augmented cluster magnetic multipole order in a crystal lacking local space inversion parity may break global inversion symmetry, and then, it is classified into an odd-parity multipole order. We investigate unconventional superconductivity induced by an odd-parity magnetic multipole fluctuation in a two-dimensional two-sublattice Hubbard model motivated by Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that even-parity superconductivity is more significantly suppressed by a spin-orbit coupl…
Unconventional superconductors host a plethora of interesting physical phenomena. However, the standard theory of superconductivity suggests that unconventional pairing is highly sensitive to disorder, and hence can only be observed in ultraclean systems. We find that due to an emergent chiral symmetry, spin-orbital locking can parametrically suppress pair decoherence introduced by impurity scattering in odd-parity superconductors. Our work demonstrates that disorder is not an obstacle to realize odd-parity superconductivity in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling.

We discuss the nodal structure of odd-parity superconductors in the presence of non-symmorphic crystal symmetries, both with and without spin-orbit coupling, and with and without time reversal symmetry. We comment on the relation of our work to previous work in the literature, and also the implications for unconventional superconductors such as UPt$_3$.
We discuss the appearance of odd-frequency spin-triplet s-wave superconductivity, first proposed by Berezinskii [{\it JETP} {\bf 20}, 287 (1974)], on the surface of a topological insulator proximity coupled to a conventional spin-singlet s-wave superconductor. Using both analytical and numerical methods we show that this disorder robust odd-frequency state is present whenever there is an in-surface gradient in the proximity induced gap, including superconductor-normal state (SN) junctions. The time-independent order parameter for the odd-frequency superconductor is proportional to the in-surfa…
We investigate general structure of Landau free energy for stabilizing a novel superconducting state with both even-frequency and odd-frequency components in gap function. On the basis of the Luttinger-Ward functional, we elucidate an emergent mixing between different "parities" in time. The simplest case of the conventional s-wave singlet mixed with the odd-frequency triplet state under broken time-reversal symmetry is examined to demonstrate the anomalous structure of the free-energy functional. The induced odd-frequency component alters behaviors of physical quantities from those obtained b…
We study the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state of spin fluctuation mediated pairing, and focus on the effect of coexisting charge fluctuations. We find that (i) consecutive transitions from singlet pairing to FFLO and further to $S_z=1$ triplet pairing can generally take place upon increasing the magnetic field when strong charge fluctuations coexist with spin fluctuations, and (ii) the enhancement of the charge fluctuations lead to a significant increase of the parity mixing in the FFLO state, where the triplet/singlet component ratio in the gap function can be close to unity. We …
We study the interplay between proximity-induced superconductivity and ferromagnetism in graphene by self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations on the honeycomb lattice. We find that a strong triplet proximity effect is generated in graphene, leading to odd-frequency pairing correlations. These odd-frequency correlations are clearly manifested in the local density of states of the graphene sheet, which can be probed via STM-measurements. Motivated by recent experiments on S$\mid$N$\mid$S graphene Josephson junctions, we also study the spectrum of Andreev-bound states formed i…
We show that a spontaneous magnetic moment may appear at the edge of a spin-triplet superconductor if the system allows for pairing in a subdominant channel. To unveil the microscopic mechanism behind such effect we combine numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-De Gennes equations for a tight-binding model with nearest-neighbor attraction, and the symmetry based Ginzburg-Landau approach. We find that a potential barrier modulating the electronic density near the edge of the system leads to a non-unitary superconducting state close to the boundary where spin-singlet pairing coexists with the dom…
We study unconventional superconductivity in a two-dimensional locally noncentrosymmetric triangular lattice. The model is relevant to bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides with 2H$_b$ stacking structure, for example. The superconducting instability is analyzed by solving the linearized Eliashberg equation within the random phase approximation. We show that ferromagnetic fluctuations are dominant owing to the existence of disconnected Fermi pockets near van Hove singularity, and hence odd-parity spin-triplet superconductivity is favored. In the absence of the spin-orbit coupling, we find th…
We study the thermodynamics of a small, isolated superconducting grain using a recently developed quantum Monte Carlo method. This method allows us to simulate grains at any finite temperature and with any level spacing in an exact way. We focus on the pairing energy, pairing gap, condensation energy, heat capacity and spin susceptibility to describe the grain. We discuss the interplay between finite size (mesoscopic system), pairing correlations and temperature in full detail.
We present a microscopic theory of fluctuation-mediated pairing mechanism in a two-dimensional extended Hubbard model. In contrast to conventional wisdom, odd-frequency spin-triplet pairing can be stabilized near the spin-density-wave critical point. Favorable conditions for the odd-frequency pairing are the presence of geometrical frustration and off-site Coulomb interaction.
We first show the realization of exceptional points in a non-Hermitian superconducting system based on a conventional superconductor and then demonstrate that, surprisingly, the system hosts odd-frequency pairing, solely generated by the non-Hermiticity. While there is a coexistence of even- and odd-frequency pairs under general conditions, we find that the even-frequency term vanishes at the exceptional degeneracies, leaving only odd-frequency pairing. This exceptional odd-frequency pairing is directly given by the imaginary part of the eigenvalues at the exceptional points and can be measure…
The local density of states (LDOS) around a vortex core is studied theoretically in terms of the odd-frequency (odd-omega) Cooper pairing induced around the center of the vortex core. We find a robust zero-energy peak in the LDOS at a vortex core in a chiral p-wave superconductor originating from an odd-omega s-wave pair amplitude. We suggest how to discriminate a spin-triplet pairing symmetry and spatial chiral-domain structure by scanning tunneling spectroscopy via odd-omega pair amplitudes inside vortex cores.
We demonstrate that, quite generally, the spin-singlet even-parity (spin-triplet odd-parity) pair potential in a superconductor induces the odd-frequency pairing component with spin-singlet odd-parity (spin-triplet even-parity) near interfaces. The magnitude of the induced odd-frequency component is enhanced in the presence of the midgap Andreev resonant state due to the sign change of the anisotropic pair potential at the interface. The Josephson effect should therefore occur between odd- and even-frequency superconductors, contrary to the standard wisdom. A method to probe the odd-frequency …
In the present paper, we propose the parity even, orbital singlet and spin triplet pairing state as the ground state of the newly discovered super-conductor $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$.The pairing mechanism involves both the special shape of the electron fermi surface and the strong ferromagnetic fluctuation induced by Hund's rule coupling. The special behavior of the Bogoliubov quasi-particle spectrum may leads to "Fermi arc" like anisotropy super-conducting gap, which can be detected by angle resolved photo emission(ARPES).The impurity effects are also discussed.
We investigate the influence of critical spin fluctuations on electromagnetic responses in the odd-frequency superconductivity. It is shown that the Meissner kernel of the odd-frequency superconductivity is strongly reduced by the critical spin fluctuation or the massless spin wave mode in the antiferromagnetic phase. These results imply that the superfluid density is reduced, and the London penetration depth is lengthened for the odd-frequency pairing. It is also shown that the zero field Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing is spontaneously realized both for even- and odd-frequency in th…
We analyze a possibility for odd-frequency pairing near a quantum critical point(QCP) in a metal. We consider a model with dynamical pairing interaction $V(Ω_n)\sim 1/|Ω_n|^γ$ (the $γ$-model). This interaction gives rise to a non-Fermi liquid in the normal state and is attractive for pairing. The two trends compete with each other. We search for odd-frequency solutions for the pairing gap $Δ(ω_m)= -Δ(ω_m)$. We show that for $γ<1$, odd-frequency superconductivity looses the competition with a non-Fermi liquid and does not develop. We show that the pairing does develop in the extended model in w…
We study the behavior of Cooper pair amplitudes that emerge when a two-dimensional superconductor is coupled to two parallel nanowires, focusing on the conditions for realizing odd-frequency pair amplitudes in the absence of spin-orbit coupling or magnetism. In general, any finite tunneling between the superconductor and the two nanowires induces odd-frequency spin-singlet pair amplitudes in the substrate as well as a substantial odd-frequency interwire pairing, both of which vanish locally. Interestingly, in the regime of strong superconductor-nanowire tunneling, we find that the presence of …
We investigate how hybridization (single-quasiparticle scattering) between two superconducting bands induces odd-frequency superconductivity in a multiband superconductor. An explicit derivation of the odd-frequency pairing correlation and its full frequency dependence is given. We find that the density of states is modified, from the sum of the two BCS spectra, at higher energies by additional hybridization gaps with strong coherence peaks when odd-frequency pairing is present.
We theoretically predict proximity-induced odd-frequency (odd-$ω$) pairing on the surface of a Weyl nodal loop semimetal, characterized by a nodal loop Fermi surface and drumhead-like surface states (DSSs), attached to conventional spin-singlet $s$-wave superconducting leads. Due to the complete spin polarization of the DSS, odd-$ω$ equal-spin triplet pairing is present, and we show that it gives rise to a finite Josephson current. Placing an additional ferromagnet in the junction can also generate odd-$ω$ mixed-spin triplet pairing, but the pairing and current is not affected if the magnetiza…
The superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ was once thought to be a leading candidate for $p$-wave superconductivity. A constant Knight shift below the transition temperature provided evidence for spin-triplet pairing, and a $π$ phase shift observed in Josephson junction tunneling experiments suggested odd-parity pairing, both of which are described by $p$-wave states. However, with recent experiments observing a significant decrease in the Knight shift below the transition temperature, signifying a spin-singlet state, the odd-parity results are left to be reconciled. In this work, we show tha…
We investigate the induced superconducting pair correlations in junctions between a conventional spin-singlet $s$-wave superconductor and a disordered normal metal. Decomposing the pair amplitude based on its symmetries in the time domain, we demonstrate that the odd-time, or equivalently odd-frequency, spin-singlet $p$-wave correlations are both significant in size and entirely robust against random non-magnetic disorder. We find that these odd-frequency correlations can even be generated by disorder. Our results show that anisotropic odd-frequency pairing represent an important fraction of t…
Recently, evidence has emerged for a field-induced even- to odd-parity superconducting phase transition in CeRh$_2$As$_2$ [S. Khim et al., Science 373 1012 (2021)]. Here we argue that the P4/nmm non-symmorphic crystal structure of CeRh$_2$As$_2$ plays a key role in enabling this transition by ensuring large spin-orbit interactions near the Brillouin zone boundaries, which naturally leads to the required near-degeneracy of the even- and odd-parity channels. We further comment on the relevance of our theory to FeSe, which crystallizes in the same structure.
Even- and odd-frequency superconductivity coexist due to broken time-reversal symmetry under magnetic field. In order to describe this mixing, we extend the linearized Eliashberg equation for the spin and charge fluctuation mechanism in strongly correlated electron systems. We apply this extended Eliashberg equation to the odd-frequency superconductivity on a quasi-one-dimensional isosceles triangular lattice under in-plane magnetic field and examine the effect of the even-frequency component.
Vertical graphene heterostructures made up of graphene layers separated by BN spacers allow for novel ways of tuning the interactions between electrons. We study the possibility of electron pairing mediated by modified repulsive interactions. Long range intravalley and short range intervalley interactions give rise to different anisotropic phases. We show that a superconducting state with gaps of opposite signs in different valleys, an odd momentum pairing state, can exist above carrier densities of $5-10 \times 10^{13} {\rm cm}^{-2}$. The dependence of the transition temperature on the differ…
We investigate pairing states realized at the (001) interface of a spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ on the basis of microscopic calculations. Because of a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction induced at the interface, strong parity-mixing of Cooper pairs between a spin-singlet state and a spin-triplet state occurs in this system. There are also strong inter-band pair correlations between the spin-orbit split bands, in spite of the considerably large spin-orbit splitting. This is due to frustration between the spin-orbit interaction and pairing interactions. In this pairing state, time-r…
Spin-orbit coupling in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) causes spin-valley locking giving rise to unconventional optical, transport, and superconducting properties. In this paper, we propose exotic superconductivity in bilayer group-IV TMDCs by symmetry control. The sublattice-dependent hidden spin-orbit coupling arising from local inversion symmetry breaking in the crystal structure may stabilize the odd-parity superconductivity by purely $s$-wave local pairing interaction. The stability of the odd-parity superconducting state depends on the bilayer stacking. The 2H$_b$ stacking in Mo…
Under the assumption that superconducting pairing is driven by local d-p hybridization, we show that the superconducting state in iron-based superconductors is classified as an odd parity s-wave spin-singlet pairing state in a single trilayer FeAs/Se, the building block of the materials. In a low energy effective model with only d-orbitals in an iron square bipartite lattice, the superconducting order parameter in this state is a combination of a s-wave normal pairing between two sublattices and a s-wave $η$-pairing within the sublattices. Parity conservation was violated in proposed supercond…
The low field phase of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4 is studied by muon spin rotation. The zero temperature limit of the magnetic penetration depth within the TMTSF layers is obtained to be lambda_{ab}(0) = 0.86(2) um. Temperature dependence of the muon spin relaxation shows no indication of gap nodes on the Fermi surface nor of any spontaneous fields due to time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The weight of evidence suggests that the symmetry of this low field phase is odd-frequency p-wave singlet; a novel example of odd-frequency pairing in a bulk superconductor.
We identify time-reversal symmetry breaking mixed-parity superconducting states that feature eight Majorana corner modes in properly cleaved three-dimensional cubic crystals. Namely, when an odd-parity isotropic $p$-wave pairing coexists with cubic symmetry preserving even-parity octupolar $d_{x^2-y^2}+i d_{3z^2-r^2}$ pairing, the gapless surface Majorana modes of the former get localized at the eight corners, thus yielding an \emph{intrinsic} third-order topological superconductor (TOTSC). A cousin $d_{xy}+id_{3z^2-r^2}$ pairing also accommodating eight corner Majorana modes, by virtue of bre…
We consider normal-superconductor (NS) and superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions based on one-dimensional nanowires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and proximity-induced $s$-wave spin-singlet superconductivity and analytically demonstrate how both even- and odd-frequency and spin-singlet and -triplet superconducting pair correlations are always present. In particular, by using a fully quantum mechanical scattering approach, we show that Andreev reflection induces mixing of spatial parities at interfaces, thus being the unique process which generates odd-frequency pairing; on the…
We study the induced odd-frequency pairing states in ballistic normal metal/superconductor (N/S) junctions where a superconductor has even-frequency symmetry in the bulk and a normal metal layer has an arbitrary length. Using the quasiclassical Green's function formalism, we demonstrate that, quite generally, the pair amplitude in the junction has an admixture of an odd-frequency component due to the breakdown of translational invariance near the N/S interface where the pair potential acquires spatial dependence. If a superconductor has even-parity pair potential (spin-singlet s-wave state), t…
We study the pairing of fermions by an interaction consisting of a Hubbard repulsion, mimicking a screened Coulomb potential, and a dynamical phonon-mediated attraction. For such interaction, the gap equation allows even- and odd-frequency solutions $Δ_e$ and $Δ_o$. We show that odd-frequency pairing does not develop within the Eliashberg approximation due to over-critical pair-breaking from the self-energy. When vertex corrections are included, the pairing interaction gets stronger, and $Δ_o$ can develop. We argue that even in this case keeping the self-energy is still a must as it cancels ou…
We have investigated the proximity effect in superconductor/ferromagnet junctions in a systematic manner to discuss the relationship between the zero-energy peak (ZEP) of the local density of states (LDOS) and spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing. By exactly solving the nonlinear Usadel equations, we have found that the ZEP is realized in a wide range of geometrical and material parameters in the case of the noncollinear magnetization. This strongly suggests the robustness of the ZEP induced by spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing in such systems. We also found that the crossover from singlet pair…
A possibility of the odd-frequency pairing in the strong-coupling electron-phonon systems is discussed. Using the Holstein-Hubbard model, we demonstrate that the anomalously soft Einstein mode with the frequency $ω_{\rm E}\llω_{c}$ ($ω_{c}$ is the order of the renormalized bandwidth) mediates the s-wave odd-frequency triplet pairing against the ordinary even-frequency singlet pairing. It is necessary for the emergence of the odd-frequency pairing that the pairing interaction is strongly retarded as well as the strong coupling, since the pairing interaction for the odd-frequency pairing is effe…
We formulate a general framework for addressing both odd- and even-frequency superconductivity in Dirac semimetals and demonstrate that the odd-frequency or the Berezinskii pairing can naturally appear in these materials because of the chirality degree of freedom. We show that repulsive frequency-dependent interactions favor the Berezinskii pairing while an attractive electron-electron interaction allows for the BCS pairing. In the case of compensated Dirac and Weyl semimetals, both the conventional BCS and odd-frequency Berezinskii pairings require critical coupling. Since these pairings coul…
Group theory arguments have been invoked to argue that odd parity order parameters cannot have line nodes in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. In this paper we show that these arguments do not hold for certain non-symmorphic superconductors. Specifically, we demonstrate that when the underlying crystal has a twofold screw axis, half of the odd parity representations vanish on the Brillouin zone face perpendicular to this axis. Many unconventional superconductors have non-symmorphic space groups, and we discuss implications for several materials, including UPt3, UBe13, Li2Pt3B and Na4Ir3O8.
