Depth prediction is fundamental for many useful applications on computer vision and robotic systems. On mobile phones, the performance of some useful applications such as augmented reality, autofocus and so on could be enhanced by accurate depth prediction. In this work, an efficient fully convolutional network architecture for depth prediction has been proposed, which uses RegNetY 06 as the encoder and split-concatenate shuffle blocks as decoder. At the same time, an appropriate combination of data augmentation, hyper-parameters and loss functions to efficiently train the lightweight network has been provided. Also, an Android application has been developed which can load CNN models to predict depth map by the monocular images captured from the mobile camera and evaluate the average latency and frame per second of the models. As a result, the network achieves 82.7% δ1 accuracy on NYU Depth v2 dataset and at the same time, have only 62ms latency on ARM A76 CPUs so that it can predict the depth map from the mobile camera in real-time.

Monocular (relative or metric) depth estimation is a critical task for various applications, such as autonomous vehicles, augmented reality and image editing. In recent years, with the increasing availability of mobile devices, accurate and mobile-friendly depth models have gained importance. Increasingly accurate models typically require more computational resources, which inhibits the use of such models on mobile devices. The mobile use case is arguably the most unrestricted one, which requires highly accurate yet mobile-friendly architectures. Therefore, we try to answer the following quest…

Monocular depth estimation in the wild inherently predicts depth up to an unknown scale. To resolve scale ambiguity issue, we present a learning algorithm that leverages monocular simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with proprioceptive sensors. Such monocular SLAM systems can provide metrically scaled camera poses. Given these metric poses and monocular sequences, we propose a self-supervised learning method for the pre-trained supervised monocular depth networks to enable metrically scaled depth estimation. Our approach is based on a teacher-student formulation which guides our netwo…
We present a Deep Learning based system for the twin tasks of localization and obstacle avoidance essential to any mobile robot. Our system learns from conventional geometric SLAM, and outputs, using a single camera, the topological pose of the camera in an environment, and the depth map of obstacles around it. We use a CNN to localize in a topological map, and a conditional VAE to output depth for a camera image, conditional on this topological location estimation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our monocular localization and depth estimation system on simulated and real datasets.

Monocular depth estimation is an essential task in the computer vision community. While tremendous successful methods have obtained excellent results, most of them are computationally expensive and not applicable for real-time on-device inference. In this paper, we aim to address more practical applications of monocular depth estimation, where the solution should consider not only the precision but also the inference time on mobile devices. To this end, we first develop an end-to-end learning-based model with a tiny weight size (1.4MB) and a short inference time (27FPS on Raspberry Pi 4). Then…
In this paper, we present a fast monocular depth estimation method for enabling 3D perception capabilities of low-cost underwater robots. We formulate a novel end-to-end deep visual learning pipeline named UDepth, which incorporates domain knowledge of image formation characteristics of natural underwater scenes. First, we adapt a new input space from raw RGB image space by exploiting underwater light attenuation prior, and then devise a least-squared formulation for coarse pixel-wise depth prediction. Subsequently, we extend this into a domain projection loss that guides the end-to-end learni…
Acquiring accurate three-dimensional depth information conventionally requires expensive multibeam LiDAR devices. Recently, researchers have developed a less expensive option by predicting depth information from two-dimensional color imagery. However, there still exists a substantial gap in accuracy between depth information estimated from two-dimensional images and real LiDAR point-cloud. In this paper, we introduce a fusion-based depth prediction method, called FusionMapping. This is the first method that fuses colored imagery and two-dimensional laser scan to estimate depth in-formation. Mo…

We present a novel approach for unsupervised learning of depth and ego-motion from monocular video. Unsupervised learning removes the need for separate supervisory signals (depth or ego-motion ground truth, or multi-view video). Prior work in unsupervised depth learning uses pixel-wise or gradient-based losses, which only consider pixels in small local neighborhoods. Our main contribution is to explicitly consider the inferred 3D geometry of the scene, enforcing consistency of the estimated 3D point clouds and ego-motion across consecutive frames. This is a challenging task and is solved by a …

Self-supervised learning shows great potential in monoculardepth estimation, using image sequences as the only source ofsupervision. Although people try to use the high-resolutionimage for depth estimation, the accuracy of prediction hasnot been significantly improved. In this work, we find thecore reason comes from the inaccurate depth estimation inlarge gradient regions, making the bilinear interpolation er-ror gradually disappear as the resolution increases. To obtainmore accurate depth estimation in large gradient regions, itis necessary to obtain high-resolution features with spatialand s…
We present an end-to-end neural network-based model for inferring an approximate 3D mesh representation of a human face from single camera input for AR applications. The relatively dense mesh model of 468 vertices is well-suited for face-based AR effects. The proposed model demonstrates super-realtime inference speed on mobile GPUs (100-1000+ FPS, depending on the device and model variant) and a high prediction quality that is comparable to the variance in manual annotations of the same image.

With the mass-market adoption of dual-camera mobile phones, leveraging stereo information in computer vision has become increasingly important. Current state-of-the-art methods utilize learning-based algorithms, where the amount and quality of training samples heavily influence results. Existing stereo image datasets are limited either in size or subject variety. Hence, algorithms trained on such datasets do not generalize well to scenarios encountered in mobile photography. We present Holopix50k, a novel in-the-wild stereo image dataset, comprising 49,368 image pairs contributed by users of t…

Monocular 3D object detection (Mono3D) in mobile settings (e.g., on a vehicle, a drone, or a robot) is an important yet challenging task. Due to the near-far disparity phenomenon of monocular vision and the ever-changing camera pose, it is hard to acquire high detection accuracy, especially for far objects. Inspired by the insight that the depth of an object can be well determined according to the depth of the ground where it stands, in this paper, we propose a novel Mono3D framework, called MoGDE, which constantly estimates the corresponding ground depth of an image and then utilizes the esti…
Bokeh rendering is a popular and effective technique used in photography to create an aesthetically pleasing effect. It is widely used to blur the background and highlight the subject in the foreground, thereby drawing the viewer's attention to the main focus of the image. In traditional digital single-lens reflex cameras (DSLRs), this effect is achieved through the use of a large aperture lens. This allows the camera to capture images with shallow depth-of-field, in which only a small area of the image is in sharp focus, while the rest of the image is blurred. However, the hardware embedded i…
In this work, we propose a framework for single-view hand mesh reconstruction, which can simultaneously achieve high reconstruction accuracy, fast inference speed, and temporal coherence. Specifically, for 2D encoding, we propose lightweight yet effective stacked structures. Regarding 3D decoding, we provide an efficient graph operator, namely depth-separable spiral convolution. Moreover, we present a novel feature lifting module for bridging the gap between 2D and 3D representations. This module begins with a map-based position regression (MapReg) block to integrate the merits of both heatmap…
In this paper, we tackle the problem of monocular bokeh synthesis, where we attempt to render a shallow depth of field image from a single all-in-focus image. Unlike in DSLR cameras, this effect can not be captured directly in mobile cameras due to the physical constraints of the mobile aperture. We thus propose a network-based approach that is capable of rendering realistic monocular bokeh from single image inputs. To do this, we introduce three new edge-aware Bokeh Losses based on a predicted monocular depth map, that sharpens the foreground edges while blurring the background. This model is…
3D photography is a new medium that allows viewers to more fully experience a captured moment. In this work, we refer to a 3D photo as one that displays parallax induced by moving the viewpoint (as opposed to a stereo pair with a fixed viewpoint). 3D photos are static in time, like traditional photos, but are displayed with interactive parallax on mobile or desktop screens, as well as on Virtual Reality devices, where viewing it also includes stereo. We present an end-to-end system for creating and viewing 3D photos, and the algorithmic and design choices therein. Our 3D photos are captured in…
We present a simple, real-time approach for pupil tracking from live video on mobile devices. Our method extends a state-of-the-art face mesh detector with two new components: a tiny neural network that predicts positions of the pupils in 2D, and a displacement-based estimation of the pupil blend shape coefficients. Our technique can be used to accurately control the pupil movements of a virtual puppet, and lends liveliness and energy to it. The proposed approach runs at over 50 FPS on modern phones, and enables its usage in any real-time puppeteering pipeline.

Autonomous vehicles and mobile robotic systems are typically equipped with multiple sensors to provide redundancy. By integrating the observations from different sensors, these mobile agents are able to perceive the environment and estimate system states, e.g. locations and orientations. Although deep learning approaches for multimodal odometry estimation and localization have gained traction, they rarely focus on the issue of robust sensor fusion - a necessary consideration to deal with noisy or incomplete sensor observations in the real world. Moreover, current deep odometry models suffer fr…
We present a method for fast 3D reconstruction and real-time rendering of dynamic humans from monocular videos with accompanying parametric body fits. Our method can reconstruct a dynamic human in less than 3h using a single GPU, compared to recent state-of-the-art alternatives that take up to 72h. These speedups are obtained by using a lightweight deformation model solely based on linear blend skinning, and an efficient factorized volumetric representation for modeling the shape and color of the person in canonical pose. Moreover, we propose a novel local ray marching rendering which, by expl…
Mobile monocular 3D object detection (Mono3D) (e.g., on a vehicle, a drone, or a robot) is an important yet challenging task. Existing transformer-based offline Mono3D models adopt grid-based vision tokens, which is suboptimal when using coarse tokens due to the limited available computational power. In this paper, we propose an online Mono3D framework, called MonoATT, which leverages a novel vision transformer with heterogeneous tokens of varying shapes and sizes to facilitate mobile Mono3D. The core idea of MonoATT is to adaptively assign finer tokens to areas of more significance before uti…

The framework consists of (i) a CNN, which outputs a redundant representation of each relevant object in the image with corresponding uncertainty estimates, and (ii) a 3D bounding box optimizer. We sh…

We have developed an algorithm to generate a complete map of the traversable region for a personal assistant robot using monocular vision only. Using multiple taken by a simple webcam, obstacle detection and avoidance algorithms have been developed. Simple Linear Iterative Clustering (SLIC) has been used for segmentation to reduce the memory and computation cost. A simple mapping technique using inverse perspective mapping and occupancy grids, which is robust, and supports very fast updates has been used to create the map for indoor navigation.
We present a real-time approach for image-based localization within large scenes that have been reconstructed offline using structure from motion (Sfm). From monocular video, our method continuously computes a precise 6-DOF camera pose, by efficiently tracking natural features and matching them to 3D points in the Sfm point cloud. Our main contribution lies in efficiently interleaving a fast keypoint tracker that uses inexpensive binary feature descriptors with a new approach for direct 2D-to-3D matching. Estimating the 3D position and orientation of objects in the environment with a single RGB camera is a critical and challenging task for low-cost urban autonomous driving and mobile robots. Most of the existing algorithms are based on the geometric constraints in 2D-3D correspondence, which stems from generic 6D object pose estimation. We first identify how the ground plane provides additional clues in depth reasoning in 3D detection in driving scenes.
