We discuss a limit of 3d $T_ρ^σ[SU(N)]$ quiver gauge theories in which the number of nodes is large and the ranks scale quadratically with the length of the quiver. The sphere free energies and topologically twisted indices are obtained using supersymmetric localization. Both scale quartically with the length of the quiver and quadratically with $N$, with trilogarithm functions depending on the quiver data as coefficients. The IR SCFTs have well-behaved supergravity duals in Type IIB, and the free energies match precisely with holographic results. Previously discussed theories with $N^2\ln N$ scaling arise as limiting cases. Each balanced 3d quiver theory is linked to a 5d parent, whose matrix model is related and dominated by the same saddle point, leading to close relations between BPS observables.
We show that an integrable four-dimensional non-unitary field theory that was recently proposed as a certain limit of the $γ_i$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory is incomplete and not conformal -- not even in the planar limit. We complete this theory by double-trace couplings and find conformal one-loop fix-points when admitting respective complex coupling constants. These couplings must not be neglected in the planar limit, as they can contribute to planar multi-point functions. Based on our results for certain two-loop planar anomalous dimensions, we propose tests of integrability.
We derive analytically the terms of maximal transcendality of the planar 2- and 3-point functions of single-trace chiral primary operators of ${\cal N}=2$ SQCD on $\bR^4$, to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling. These results prove two conjectures we formulated in previous work. Furthermore, we also provide an explicit expression for the terms in the planar 2-point functions of these operators that contain products of two values of the $ζ$ function.
We derive the planar limit of 2- and 3-point functions of single-trace chiral primary operators of ${\cal N}=2$ SQCD on $S^4$, to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling. In order to do so, we first obtain a combinatorial expression for the planar free energy of a hermitian matrix model with an infinite number of arbitrary single and double trace terms in the potential; this solution might have applications in many other contexts. We then use these results to evaluate the analogous planar correlation functions on ${\mathbb R}^4$. Specifically, we compute all the terms with a single value of the $ζ…
We derive the Wilson-Polchinski RG equation in the planar limit. We explain that the equation necessarily involves also non-planar amplitudes with sphere topology, which represent multi-trace contributions to the effective action. The resulting RG equation turns out to be of the Hamilton-Jacobi type since loop effects manifest themselves through terms which are linear in first order derivatives of the effective action with respect to the sources. We briefly outline applications to renormalization of non-commutative field theories, matrix models with external sources and holography.
The problem of computing the anomalous dimensions of a class of (nearly) half-BPS operators with a large R-charge is reduced to the problem of diagonalizing a Cuntz oscillator chain. Due to the large dimension of the operators we consider, non-planar corrections must be summed to correctly construct the Cuntz oscillator dynamics. These non-planar corrections do not represent quantum corrections in the dual gravitational theory, but rather, they account for the backreaction from the heavy operator whose dimension we study. Non-planar corrections accounting for quantum corrections seem to spoil …
We study N=2 Yang-Mills theory on S^4 in the large-N limit. We find that on a large sphere Wilson loops obey a perimeter law and that the free energy grows quadratically with the radius of the sphere. We also comment on the large-N limit of the N=2* theory, and on the free energy in N=2 and N=4 superconformal theories.
We study ${\cal N}=3$ linear Chern-Simons-matter theories in the planar limit. The matter content of the theory is depicted by a linear-shape diagram with $n$ nodes and $n-1$ links for any $n$. The free energy and the vevs of BPS Wilson loops are given in terms of a single 1-form on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ which can be determined explicitly for all linear theories. The analytic structure of the vevs of the Wilson loops is investigated in detail for $n=1$ and $n=2$. The addition of fundamental matters is also discussed.
In this article we consider gauge theories with a U(N)X U(N) gauge group. We provide, for the first time, a complete set of operators built from scalar fields that are in the bi fundamental of the two groups. Our operators diagonalize the two point function of the free field theory at all orders in 1/N. We then use this basis to investigate non-planar anomalous dimensions in the ABJM theory. We show that the dilatation operator reduces to a set of decoupled harmonic oscillators, signaling integrability in a nonplanar large N limit.
Compact expressions in terms of the Q-functions of the Quantum Spectral Curve are given for 3-cusped fundamental Wilson loops in the ladders limit of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills with additional scalars inserted at a cusp between uncoupled arcs. This gives some further credence to the already natural and evidenced view that the Quantum Spectral Curve in fact pertains to a wide class of observables beyond the spectrum, as well as providing additional nonperturbative ladders limit results.
We study the large N (planar) limit of pure SU(N) 2+1 dimensional Yang-Mills theory (YM_{2+1}) using a gauge-invariant matrix parameterization introduced by Karabali and Nair. This formulation crucially relies on the properties of local holomorphic gauge invariant collective fields in the Hamiltonian formulation of YM_{2+1}. We show that the spectrum in the planar limit of this theory can be explicitly determined in the $N=\infty$, low momentum (large 't Hooft coupling) limit, using the technology of the Eguchi-Kawai reduction and the existing knowledge concerning the one-matrix model. The dis…
The planar scattering amplitudes of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ super-Yang--Mills theory display symmetries and structures which underlie their relatively simple analytic properties such as having only logarithmic singularities and no poles at infinity. Recent work shows in various nontrivial examples that the simple analytic properties of the planar sector survive into the nonplanar sector, but this has yet to be understood from underlying symmetries. Here we explicitly show that for an infinite class of nonplanar integrals that covers all subleading-color contributions to the two-loop four- and five-p…
We initiate an exploration of on-shell functions in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM beyond the planar limit by providing compact, combinatorial expressions for all leading singularities of MHV amplitudes and showing that they can always be expressed as a positive sum of differently ordered Parke-Taylor tree amplitudes. This is understood in terms of an extended notion of positivity in $G(2,n)$, the Grassmannian of 2-planes in $n$ dimensions: a single on-shell diagram can be associated with many different "positive" regions, of which the familiar positive region associated with planar diagrams is just one …
We show that renormalized non-commutative scalar field theories do not reduce to their planar sector in the limit of large non-commutativity. This follows from the fact that the RG equation of the Wilson-Polchinski type which describes the genus zero sector of non-commutative field theories couples generic planar amplitudes with non-planar amplitudes at exceptional values of the external momenta. We prove that the renormalization problem can be consistently restricted to this set of amplitudes. In the resulting renormalized theory non-planar divergences are treated as UV divergences requiring …
Motivated by recent disagreements in the context of AdS/CFT, we study the non-planar sector of the BMN correspondence. In particular, we reconsider the energy shift of states with two stringy excitations in light-cone string field theory and explicitly determine its complete perturbative contribution from the impurity-conserving channel. Surprisingly, our result neither agrees with earlier leading order computations, nor reproduces the gauge theory prediction. More than that, it features half-integer powers of the effective gauge coupling $λ'$ representing a qualitative difference to gauge the…
We study excitations of LLM geometries. These geometries arise from the backreaction of a condensate of giant gravitons. Excitations of the condensed branes are open strings, which give rise to an emergent Yang-Mills theory at low energy. We study the dynamics of the planar limit of these emergent gauge theories, accumulating evidence that they are planar ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills. There are three observations supporting this conclusion: (i) we argue for an isomorphism between the planar Hilbert space of the original ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills and the planar Hilbert space of the emergen…
We study the $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS circular Wilson loop in the totally antisymmetric representation of the gauge group in $\mathcal N =4 $ supersymmetric Yang-Mills. This observable is captured by a Gaussian matrix model with appropriate insertion. We compute the first $1/N$ correction at leading order in 't Hooft coupling by means of the matrix model loop equations. Disagreement with the 1-loop effective action of the holographically dual $D5$-brane suggests the need to account for gravitational backreaction on the string theory side.
We discuss scattering of fundamental matter in the planar and strong coupling limit via the AdS/CFT correspondence, generalizing the recently proposed calculation for adjoint matter due to Alday and Maldacena [arXiv:0705.0303]. Color decomposition of quark amplitudes is a key property allowing to repeat the procedure in the case of fundamental matter and to derive the relation of these strong coupling amplitudes to minimal area problems. We present the results for two different D3-D7 systems, one is only conformal in the planar limit and the other is exactly conformal. Our results suggest a un…
We consider a new large-N limit, in which the 't Hooft coupling grows with N. We argue that a class of large-N equivalences, which is known to hold in the 't Hooft limit, can be extended to this very strongly coupled limit. Hence this limit may lead to a new way of studying corrections to the 't Hooft limit, while keeping nice properties of the latter. As a concrete example, we describe large-N equivalences between the ABJM theory and its orientifold projection. The equivalence implies that operators neutral under the projection symmetry have the same correlation functions in two theories at l…
The large-N limit of gauge theories has been playing a crucial role in theoretical physics over the decades. Despite its importance, little is known outside the planar limit where the 't Hooft coupling $λ=g_{YM}^2N$ is fixed. In this Letter we consider more general large-N limit --- $λ$ grows with N, e.g., $g_{YM}^2$ is fixed. Such a limit is important particularly in recent attempts to find the nonpertubative formulation of M-theory. Based on various supporting evidence, we propose this limit is essentially identical to the planar limit, in the sense the order of the large-N limit and the str…
We review one dimensional matrix theory and its variations, collective field theory and quantum phase space description. In the planar limit, these theories become classical and can be easily analyzed. With these descriptions, one dimensional interacting many-body system can be solved exactly when the particle number goes to infinity. As an example, bosonic and two-component fermionic systems with a $δ$-function interaction are analyzed in detail.
Using methods of numerical Lattice Gauge Theory we show that in the limit of a large number of colors, properly regularized Wilson loops have an eigenvalue distribution which changes non-analytically as the overall size of the loop is increased. This establishes a large-N phase transition in continuum planar gauge theory, a fact whose precise implications remain to be worked out.
Using Chebyshev polynomials combined with some mild combinatorics, we provide a new formula for the analytical planar limit of a random matrix model with a one-cut potential $V$. For potentials $V(x)=x^{2}/2-\sum_{n\ge1}a_{n}x^{n}/n$, as a power series in all $a_{n}$, the formal Taylor expansion of the analytic planar limit is exactly the formal planar limit. In the case $V$ is analytic in infinitely many variables $\{a_{n}\}_{n\ge1}$ (on the appropriate spaces), the planar limit is also an analytic function in infinitely many variables and we give quantitative versions of where this is define…
In the planar limit, in the deconfined phase, the Euclidean Dirac operator has a spectral gap around zero. We show that functions of eigenvalues close to the spectral edge, which are independent of common rescalings and shifts gauge configuration by gauge configuration, have distributions described by a Gaussian Hermitian matrix model. However, combinations of eigenvalues that are scale and shift invariant only on the average, do not match this matrix model.
The planar Dirac and the topologically massive vector gauge fields are unified into a supermultiplet involving no auxiliary fields. The superPoincaré symmetry emerges from the $osp(1|2)$ supersymmetry realized in terms of the deformed Heisenberg algebra underlying the construction. The non-relativistic limit yields spin 1/2 as well as new, spin 1 "Lévy-Leblond-type" equations which, together, carry an N=2 superSchrödinger symmetry. Part of the latter has its origin in the universal enveloping algebra of the superPoincaré algebra.
We investigate numerically chiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature in the planar limit in the deconfined phase, both when it is stable and when the system is supercooled. We find chiral symmetry restoration at $T_χ= T_d$, where $T_d$ is the temperature of the deconfinement transition in pure gauge theory and $T_χ< T_d$ in the supercooled deconfined phase. In the stable case the spectrum of the Dirac operator opens a gap in a discontinuous manner and in the supercooled phase the gap seems to vanish continuously.
We show that in $\text{O}(D)$ invariant matrix theories containing a large number $D$ of complex or Hermitian matrices, one can define a $D\rightarrow\infty$ limit for which the sum over planar diagrams truncates to a tractable, yet non-trivial, sum over melon diagrams. In particular, results obtained recently in SYK and tensor models can be generalized to traditional, string-inspired matrix quantum mechanical models of black holes.
We study the large N expansion of a family of matrix models related to topological strings on toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. These matrix models compute spectral observables of underlying operators obtained by quantizing the mirror curves. They have the form of a deformed O(2) matrix model, with a specific non-polynomial potential involving the Faddeev quantum dilogarithm. Their planar limit is studied using a particular conformal mapping depending on two parameters, from which several universal results can be obtained. As expected, the spectral curves controlling the planar limit of the matrix …
