Nitride perovskites are supposed to exhibit excellent properties as oxide analogues and may even have better performance in specific fields for their more covalent characters. However, till now, very limited nitride perovskites have been reported. In this work, a nitride perovskite LaMoN$_3$ has been systematically studied by first-principles calculations. The most interesting physical property is its ferroelectric $R3c$ phase, which can be stabilized under a moderate hydrostatic pressure ($\sim1.5$ GPa) and probably remain meta-stable under the ambient condition. Its ferroelectric polarization is considerable large, $80.3$ $μ$C/cm$^2$, driven by the nominal $4d^0$ rule of Mo$^{6+}$, and the covalent hybridization between Mo's $4d$ and N's $2p$ orbitals is very strong. Our calculation not only predicts a new ferroelectric material with prominent properties, but also encourages more studies on pressure engineering of functional nitrides.
Advances in first-principles computational approaches have, over the past fifteen years, made possible the investigation of physical properties of ferroelectric systems. In particular, such approaches have led to a microscopic understanding of the occurrence of ferroelectricity in perovskite oxides at ambient pressure. In this paper, we report ab-initio studies on the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the ferroelectricity in perovskites and related materials. We found that, unlike commonly believed, these materials exhibit ferroelectricity at high enough pressure. We also explained in details …
The effect of ferroelectric fluctuations on the temperature dependent dielectric constant of SrTiO$_3\,$(STO) has been long studied. Those fluctuations have been shown in recent years to be quantum critical and STO demonstrated to form the archetypal quantum critical paraelectric. The effect of those same fluctuations on the pressure and temperature dependence of the ferroelectric soft phonon mode as the system is tuned away from criticality are reported for the first time in this paper. We show that the mean field approximation is confirmed experimentally. Furthermore, using a self-consistent…
Quantum effects fundamentally engender exotic physical phenomena in macroscopic systems, which advance next-generation technological applications. Rotational tunneling that represents the quantum phenomenon of the librational motion of molecules is ubiquitous in hydrogen-contained materials. However, its direct manifestation in realizing macroscopic physical properties is elusive. Here we report an observation of reentrant ferroelectricity under low pressure that is mediated by the rotational tunneling of ammonium ions in molecule-based (NH$_4$)$_2$FeCl$_5 \cdot$H$_2$O. Applying a small pressu…
The crystal structure of the PbMg$_{1/3}$Ta$_{2/3}$O$_3$ (PMT) relaxor ferroelectric was studied under hydrostatic pressure up to $\sim 7$ GPa by means of powder neutron diffraction. We find a drastic pressure-induced decrease of the lead displacement from the inversion centre which correlates with an increase by $\sim$ 50 % of the anisotropy of the oxygen temperature factor. The vibrations of the Mg/Ta are, in contrast, rather pressure insensitive. We attribute these changes being responsible for the previously reported pressure-induced suppression of the anomalous dielectric permittivity and…
Hydrostatic pressure and oxygen vacancies usually have deleterious effects on ferroelectric materials because both tend to reduce their polarization. In this work we use first-principles calculations to study an important class of ferroelectric materials - LiNbO$_3$-type ferroelectrics (LiNbO$_3$ as the prototype), and find that in oxygen-deficient LiNbO$_{3-δ}$, hydrostatic pressure induces an unexpected metal-insulator transition between 8 and 9 GPa. Our calculations also find that strong polar displacements persist in both metallic and insulating oxygen-deficient LiNbO$_{3-δ}$ and the size …
Pressure-induced polarization switching in ferroelectric thin films has emerged as a powerful method for domain patterning, allowing to create predefined domain patterns on free surfaces and under thin conductive top electrodes. However, the mechanisms for pressure induced polarization switching in ferroelectrics remain highly controversial, with flexoelectricity, polarization rotation and suppression, and bulk and surface electrochemical processes all being potentially relevant. Here we classify possible pressure induced switching mechanisms, perform elementary estimates, and study in depth u…
The pressure-temperature phase diagram of multiferroic $Ni_3V_2O_8$ is investigated for hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa. The stability range of the ferroelectric phase associated with the incommensurate helical spin order is reduced by pressure and ferroelectricity is completely suppressed at the critical pressure of 1.64 GPa at 6.2 K. Thermal expansion measurements at ambient pressure show strong step-like anomalies of the lattice parameters associated with the lock-in transition into the commensurate paraelectric phase. The expansion anomalies are highly anisotropic, the related volume cha…
Piezoelectric PZT solid solutions were studied as a function of pressure and temperature. Moderate pressure is found to induce phase transitions to monoclinic phases (Cm,Cc) for Ti-rich PZT, which are the same ferroelectric phases responsible for the high piezoelectric properties of the MPB. The following transformation sequence P4mm -> Cm -> Cc -> F1 -> F-1 was identified upon increasing pressure. Compression behaviour is dominated by: (1) a rotation and a reduction of the spontaneouspolarization and (2) octahedral tilting leading to unit cell doubling. Future studies as a function of pressur…
We report the magnetic and electrical characteristics of a polycrystalline specimen of FeTiO3 synthesized at high pressure that is isostructural with acentric LiNbO3 (LBO). Piezoresponse force microscopy, optical second harmonic generation, and magnetometry demonstrate that FeTiO3-II is ferroelectric at and below room temperature and weakly ferromagnetic below ~120 K. These results validate symmetry-based materials design criteria and first principles calculations of coexistence between ferroelectricity and weak ferromagnetism in a series of transition metal titanates crystallizing in the LBO …
The low-temperature ferroelectric polarization of multiferroic $YMn_2O_5$ is completely reversed at a critical pressure of 10 kbar and the phase transition from the incommensurate to the commensurate magnetic phase is induced by pressures above 14 kbar. The high-pressure data correlate with thermal expansion measurements indicating a significant lattice strain at the low-temperature transition into the incommensurate phase. The results support the exchange striction model for the ferroelectricity in multiferroic $RMn_2O_5$ compounds and they show the importance of magnetic frustration as well …
The impact of free charges on the local pressure on a charged ferroelectric domain wall produced by an electric field has been analyzed. A general formula for the local pressure on a charged domain wall is derived considering full or partial compensation of bound polarization charges by free charges. It is shown that the compensation can lead to a very strong reduction of the pressure imposed on the wall from the electric field. In some cases this pressure can be governed by small nonlinear effects. It is concluded that the free charge compensation of bound polarization charges can lead to sub…
Despite the technological significance of the tetragonal PbTiO3 for the piezoelectric transducer industry, its high pressure behaviour is quite controversial as two entirely different scenarios, involving pressure induced (1) morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) like structural transition with concomitant rotation of the ferroelectric polarization vector and (2) antiferrodistortive (AFD) phase transition followed by emergence of a reentrant ferroelectric phase, have been proposed in recent theoretical and experimental studies. We have attempted to address these controversies through a high resolu…
We investigate the charge and lattice states in a quasi-one-dimensional organic ferroelectric material, TTF-QCl$_{4}$, under pressures of up to 35 kbar by nuclear quadrupole resonance experiments. The results reveal a global pressure-temperature phase diagram, which spans the electronic and ionic regimes of ferroelectric transitions, which have so far been studied separately, in a single material. The revealed phase diagram clearly shows that the charge-transfer instability and the lattice symmetry breaking, which coincide in the electronic ferroelectric regime at low pressures, bifurcate at a…
The temperature-dependent phase transitions in Ruddlesden-Popper oxides with perovskite bilayers have been under increased scrutiny in recent years due to the so-called hybrid improper ferroelectricity that some chemical compositions exhibit. However, little is currently understood about the hydrostatic pressure dependence of these phase transitions. Herein we present the results of a high-pressure powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment and $ab~initio$ calculations on the bilayered Ruddlesden-Popper phases Ca$_{3}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ca$_{3}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. In both compounds we obser…
We present a high-pressure x-ray diffuse scattering study of the ABO$_3$ ferroelectric perovskites BaTiO_3 and KNbO_3. The well-known diffuse lines are observed in all the phases studied. In KNbO_3, we show that the lines are present up to 21.8 GPa, with constant width and a slightly decreasing intensity. At variance, the intensity of the diffuse lines observed in the cubic phase of BaTiO_3 linearly decreases to zero at $\sim 11$ GPa. These results are discussed with respect to x-ray absorption measurements, which leads to the conclusion that the diffuse lines are only observed when the B atom…
We propose a two-sublattice proton ordering model for the quasione-dimensional CsH$_2$PO$_4$ ferroelectric with hydrogen bonds, which takes into account linear on lattice strains $u_1$, $u_2$, $u_3$ and $u_5$ contribution to the energy of proton subsystem. The model also takes into account the dependence of effective dipole moments of pseudospins on the order parameters, which enables one to agree the effective dipole moments in paraelectric and ferroelectric phases. Within this model in two-particle cluster approximation on short-range interactions and in the mean field approximation on long-…
Ground-state structure is found and pressure-induced phase transitions up to 210 kbar are studied in mercury titanate from first principles within the density functional theory. It is established that the $R3c$ structure experimentally observed in HgTiO$_3$ is metastable at ambient pressure. With increasing the hydrostatic pressure, the ground-state structure changes following the $R{\bar 3} \to R3c \to Pbnm$ sequence. It is shown that the appearance of ferroelectricity in HgTiO$_3$ at $P = 0$ is associated with an unstable phonon mode. Optical and elastic properties of different phases of mer…
The growth window of epitaxial Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 is established taking into account the main ferroelectric properties that films have to present simultaneously: high remanent polarization, low fatigue and long retention. Defects in the film and imprint field depend on deposition temperature and oxygen pressure, with an impact on fatigue and retention, respectively. Fatigue increases with substrate temperature and pressure, and retention is short if low temperature is used. The growth window of epitaxial stabilization of ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 is narrower when all major ferroelectric properties …
We report that an energetic plasma process is extremely effective in enlarging the unit cell volume and ferroelectric distortion of the ferroelectric oxides, resulting in a significant increase in its Tc. We demonstrate experimentally that c-axis oriented BaTiO3 films can be deposited directly on quartz glass and Si substrates using such a process and that the material shows an approximately 5% expansion of its unit cell volume and approximately 4 times the ferroelectric tetragonal distortion of the bulk crystals. Such a frozen negative pressure results in a Tc value that is approximately 580 …
A realistic theory of the quantum paraelectric - ferroelectric transition is presented, involving parameters determined from band calculations and a renormalization group treatment of critical fluctuations. The effects of reduced dimensionality and deviations from cubic symmetry are determined. Expressions for the pressure dependence of the critical temperature, as well as pressure and temperature dependence of the specific heat are derived, and evaluated for realistic materials parameters for the systems BaTiO3 and PbTiO3. In these materials the ferroelectric soft mode dispersion apparently e…
Ferroelectric phase transition in the semiconductor Sn2P2S6 single crystal has been studied by means of neutron scattering in the pressure-temperature range adjacent to the anticipated tricritical Lifshitz point (p=0.18GPa, T=296K). The observations reveal a direct ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in the whole investigated pressure range (0.18 - 0.6GPa). These results are in a clear disagreement with phase diagrams assumed in numerous earlier works, according to which a hypothetical intermediate incommensurate phase extends over several or even tens of degrees in the 0.5GPa pressure…
The model of NH$_3$CH$_2$COOH$\cdot$H$_2$PO$_3$, modified by taking into account the piezoelectric coupling between the ordering structure elements and the strains $\varepsilon_i$, $\varepsilon_j$, is used for investigation of the effects that appear under external pressures. Within two-particle cluster approximation, the components of polarization vector and static dielectric permittivity tensor of the mechanically clamped and free crystals, their piezoelectric and thermal characteristics are calculated. The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the phase transition and the calculated physical ch…
The ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition of multiferroic CaMnTi$_2$O$_6$ has been investigated at high pressures and ambient temperature by second harmonic generation (SHG), Raman spectroscopy, and powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. We have found that CaMnTi$_2$O$_6$ undergoes a pressure-induced structural phase transition ($P4_2mc \rightarrow P4_2/nmc$) at $\sim$7 GPa to the same paraelectric structure found at ambient pressure and $T_c$ = 630 K. The continuous linear decrease of the SHG intensity that disappears at 7 GPa and the existence of a Raman active mode at 244 cm$…
The metastable orthorhombic phase of hafnia is generally obtained in polycrystalline films, whereas in epitaxial films, its formation has been much less investigated. We have grown Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 films by pulsed laser deposition, and the growth window (temperature and oxygen pressure during deposition and film thickness) for epitaxial stabilization of the ferroelectric phase is mapped. The remnant ferroelectric polarization, up to around 24 uC/cm2, depends on the amount of orthorhombic phase and interplanar spacing and increases with temperature and pressure for a fixed film thickness. The leaka…
The phase-transition sequence of a ferroelectric perovskite such as BaTiO_3 can be simulated by computing the statistical mechanics of a first-principles derived effective Hamiltonian [Zhong, Vanderbilt and Rabe, Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 1861 (1994)]. Within this method, the effect of an external pressure (in general, of any external field) can be studied by considering the appropriate "enthalpy" instead of the effective Hamiltonian itself. The legitimacy of this approach relies on two critical assumptions that, to the best of our knowledge, have not been adequately discussed in the literature to …
Based on the pseudospin model of the deformed CsH$_2$PO$_4$ crystal within the Glauber method, the equation for the time-dependent mean value of the pseudospin is obtained, which is solved in the case of small deviations from the equilibrium state. Using the solution of the equation, we find expressions for the longitudinal dynamic dielectric constant and relaxation time. Based on the proposed parameters of the theory, the temperature and frequency dependences of the dynamic dielectric constant and the temperature dependence of the relaxation time are calculated and investigated. A detailed nu…
For Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ ferroelectrics, the appearance of spontaneous polarization is related to stereoactivity of tin cations and valence fluctuations of phosphorous cations. Here, the continuous phase transition and its behavior under pressure is determined by thee-well local potential and can be described in an anharmonic quantum oscillator model. For such a model, the spectrum of pseudospin fluctuations at different temperatures and pressures has been calculated and compared with the data of Raman spectroscopy. It was revealed that the ferroelectric lattice instability is related to several l…
To elucidate a novel pressure-temperature phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional mixed-stack charge-transfer (CT) complex TTF-CA, we study the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 Blume-Emery-Griffith (BEG) model. In addition to the local charge transfer energy and the inter-stack polar (dipole-dipole) interaction, we take account of the inter-stack electrostriction effect. Using the self-consistent chain-mean-field theory, where the intra-stack degrees of freedom are exactly treated by the transfer-matrix method, we reproduce the gas-liquid-solid like phase diagram corresponding to the neutral (N…
Materials with formula of A2B2O7 is a famous family with more than 300 compounds, and have abundant properties, like ferroelectric, multiferroic, and photocatalyst properties, etc. Generally, two structures dominate this family, which are pyrochlore and perovskite-like layered (PL) structure. Previously, the structure and properties design of these materials are usually complex, and solid solutions, which complicates the manufacture, as well as introducing complexity in the study of the microscopic origins of the properties. Here, we report that the pyrochlore-PL structure change happened in p…
MnWO4 has attracted attention because of its ferroelectric property induced by frustrated helical spin order. Strong spin-lattice interaction is necessary to explain ferroelectricity associated with this type of magnetic order. We have conducted thermal expansion measurements along the a, b, c axes revealing the existence of strong anisotropic lattice anomalies at T1=7.8 K, the temperature of the magnetic lock-in transition into a commensurate low-temperature (reentrant paraelectric) phase. The effect of hydrostatic pressure up to 1.8 GPa on the FE phase is investigated by measuring the dielect…
We present a first-principles study of multiferroic BiFeO3 at high pressures. Our work reveals the main structural (change in Bi's coordination and loss of ferroelectricity), electronic (spin crossover and metallization), and magnetic (loss of order) effects favored by compression and how they are connected. Our results are consistent with the striking manifold transition observed experimentally by Gavriliuk et al. [Phys. Rev. B 77, 155112 (2008)] and provide an explanation for it.
We report a detailed spectroscopic study of the pressure induced neutral-ionic phase transition (NIT) of the mixed-stack charge-transfer (CT) crystal tetrathiafulvalene-chloranil (TTF-CA). We show that the pressure induced phase transition is still first-order and involves the presence of an intermediate disordered phase, defined by the coexistence of two species of different ionicity. Further application of pressure gradually converts this phase into an homogeneous ferroelectric phase with a single ionicity. In addition, we detect strong pretransitional phenomena which anticipate the intermed…
Phase-field simulation (PFS) have revolutionized the understanding of domain structure and switching behavior in ferroelectric thin films and ceramics. Generally, PFS is based on solution of a (set) of Ginzburg-Landau equations for a defined order parameter field(s) under physical boundary conditions (BCs) of fixed potential or charge. While well-matched to the interfaces in bulk materials and devices, these BCs are generally not applicable to free ferroelectric surfaces. Here, we developed a self-consistent phase-field model with boundary conditions based on electrochemical equilibria. We cho…

We investigate energetically favorable structures of ABO$_2$N oxynitrides as functions of pressure and strain via swarm-intelligence-based structure prediction methods, DFT lattice dynamics and first-principles molecular dynamics. We predict several thermodynamically stable polar oxynitride perovskites under high pressures. In addition, we find that ferroelectric polar phases of perovskite-structured oxynitrides can be thermodynamically stable and synthesized at high pressure on appropriate substrates. The dynamical stability of the ferroelectric oxynitrides under epitaxial strain at ambient p…
High-pressure and variable temperature single crystal synchrotron X-ray measurements combined with first-principles based molecular dynamics simulations study diffuse scattering in the relaxor ferroelectric system PSN (PbSc$_{1/2}$Nb$_{1/2}$O$_3$). Constant temperature experiments show pressure induced transition to the relaxor phase at different temperatures characterized by butterfly and rod shaped diffuse scattering around the $\{$h00$\}$ and $\{$hh0$\}$ Bragg spots, respectively. The simulations reproduce the observed diffuse scattering features as well as their pressure-temperature behavi…
Results of detailed investigations of stability of phases in substances with the small difference in the energies of the ferroelectric and the antiferroelectric types of dipole ordering are presented. It is shown that interaction of locally separated domains of the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases stabilizes a nonuniform state of the samples. The analysis of physical phenomena caused by the presence of domains of coexisting ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases in different dipole ordered substances is presented. The consideration of peculiarities of behavior of systems with non…
In hybrid improper ferroelectric systems, polarization arises from the onset of successive nonpolar lattice modes. In this work, measurements and modeling were performed to determine the spatial symmetries of the phases involved in the transitions to these modes. Structural and optical measurements reveal that the tilt and rotation distortions of the MnO6 or TiO6 polyhedra relative to the high symmetry phases driving ferroelectricity in the hybrid improper Ca3X2O7 system (X=Mn and Ti) condense at different temperatures. The tilt angle vanishes abruptly at T$_T$ ~ 400 K for Ca3Mn2O7 (and contin…
Flexocoupling impact on the size effects of the spontaneous polarization, effective piezo-response, elastic strain and compliance, carrier concentration and piezo-conductance have been calculated in thin films of ferroelectric semiconductors with mixed-type conductivity under applied pressure. Analysis of the self-consistent calculation results revealed that the thickness dependences of aforementioned physical quantities, calculated at zero and nonzero flexoelectric couplings, are very similar under zero applied pressure, but become strongly different under the application of external pressure…
Thermodynamic theory is developed for the ferroelectric phase transition of an ultrathin film in equilibrium with a chemical environment that supplies ionic species to compensate its surface. Equations of state and free energy expressions are developed based on Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, using electrochemical equilibria to provide ionic compensation boundary conditions. Calculations are presented for a monodomain PbTiO$_3$ (001) film coherently strained to SrTiO$_3$ with its exposed surface and its electronically conducting bottom electrode in equilibrium with a controlled oxygen parti…
Basing on the temperature dependences of optical birefringence for Sn2P2S6 and Sn2P2(Se0.28S0.72)6 crystals subjected to hydrostatic pressures, we prove unambiguously that Sn2P2S6 reveals a tricritical point on its (p,T)-phase diagram with the coordinates (p,T) = (4.3 kbar, 259 K), so that the second-order phase transition transforms into the first-order one whenever the pressure increases above 4.3 kbar. We also find that increasing hydrostatic pressure applied to Sn2P2(Se0.28S0.72)6 leads to the change in the phase transition character from tricritical to first-order. Further increase in the…
For Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ family of uniaxial ferroelectrics, the anharmonic quantum oscillators model, based on local three-well potential for spontaneous polarization fluctuations, has been used for a description of anharmonic properties, namely thermal expansion. The calculated pseudospin fluctuations spectra in ferroelectric phase demonstrate negative Grüneisen parameters for excitations that satisfy Curie-Weiss-like temperature and pressure dependencies in the vicinity of second order phase transition. Thermal expansion coefficient is calculated by evaluation of pseudospins entropy baric depend…
It appeared worthwhile to us to present a state-of-the-art look at the field of ferroelectrics. We are certainly not attempting to provide a complete review of all aspects of the field of ferroelectrics over the last years but we wish to transport a flavour of the current excitement in the field through the (subjective) choice of four specific examples of current interest: (i) Piezoelectrics and the morphotropic phase boundary, (ii) Multiferroics, (iii) The effect of high pressure on ferroelectrics and (iv) Strain-engineering in ferroelectric oxide thin films. For each topic we will try to wor…
