We present a scheme to implement a passive and deterministic controlled-variable phase gate on photonic qubits encoded in the frequency basis. Our gate employs a cascade system with the ground to first excited state interacting with the control photon of a given polarization, and the first to second excited state transition interacting with the target photon of the orthogonal polarization. By controlling the relative detuning between the target photon and the frequency of the transition between the first and second excited states of the cascade emitter, we enable any controlled-phase operation from 0 to $π$. This gate does not utilize any active control and needs only a single cascade emitter, enabling low-footprint and more efficient decomposition of quantum circuits, especially those rooted in the quantum Fourier transform.
A criterion for strong coupling between two quantum emitters and a single resonant light mode in a cavity is presented. The criterion takes into account the escape of cavity photons and the spontaneous emission of the emitters, which are modeled as two level systems. By using such criterion, the dissipative Tavis-Cummings ladder of states is constructed, and it is shown that the inclusion of one more emitter with respect to the Jaynes-Cummings (single emitter) case increases the effective parameter region in which $n^{\text{th}}$ order Rabi splitting is observed.
We propose a novel quantum electrodynamics (QED) platform where quantum emitters interact with a Hofstadter-ladder waveguide. We demonstrate several intriguing phenomena stemming from the exotic dispersion relation and vacuum mode properties led by the effective spin-orbit coupling, which have no analog in other QED setups. First, by assuming emitter's frequency to be resonant with the lower band, we find that the spontaneous emission is chiral with most photonic field decaying unidirectionally. Both numerical and analytical results indicate that the Hofstadter-ladder waveguide can be engineer…
We examine the routing scheme of single photons in a one-dimensional periodic chain of two-level quantum emitters (QEs) strongly coupled to two waveguides in a ladder configuration. It is known that for a single-emitter chiral waveguide ladder setting, photons can be redirected from one waveguide to another with a $100\%$ probability (deterministically) provided the resonance condition is met and spontaneous emission is completely ignored. However, when the spontaneous emission is included the routing scheme becomes considerably imperfect. In this paper, we present a solution to this issue by …
The spectrum width can be narrowed to a certain degree by decreasing the coupling strength for the two-level emitter coupled to the propagating surface plasmon. But the width can not be narrowed any further because of the loss of the photon out of system by spontaneous emission from the emitter. Here we propose a new scheme to construct a narrow-band source via a one-dimensional waveguide coupling with a three-level emitter. It is shown that the reflective spectrum width can be narrowed avoiding the impact of the loss. This approach opens up the possibility of plasmonic ultranarrow single-phot…
Understanding the properties of novel solid-state quantum emitters is pivotal for a variety of applications in field ranging from quantum optics to biology. Recently discovered defects in hexagonal boron nitride are especially interesting, as they offer much desired characteristics such as narrow emission lines and photostability. Here, we study the dependence of the emission on the excitation wavelength. We find that, in order to achieve bright single photon emission with high quantum efficiency, the excitation wavelength has to be matched to the emitter. This is a strong indication that the …
Electro-optical control of on-chip photonic devices is an essential tool for efficient integrated photonics. Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is an emerging platform for on-chip photonics due to its large electro-optic coefficient and high nonlinearity [1]. Integrating quantum emitters into LNOI would extend their versatile use in classic photonics to quantum computing and communication [2, 3]. Here, we incorporate single rare-earth ions (REI) quantum emitters in electro-optical tunable lithium niobite (LN) thin films and demonstrate control of LN microcavities coupled to REI over a frequen…
Color centers in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have emerged as promising candidates for single-photon emitters (SPEs) due to their bright emission characteristics at room temperature. In contrast to mono- and few-layered hBN, color centers in multi-layered flakes show superior emission characteristics such as higher saturation counts and spectral stability. Here, we report a method for determining both the axial position and three-dimensional dipole orientation of SPEs in thick hBN flakes by tuning the photonic local density of states using vanadium dioxide (VO2), a phase change material. Emit…
Quantum photonics technologies like wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for high-rate quantum key distribution require narrowband, spectrally tunable single photon emitters. Physical methods that rely on the application of large mechanical strain to epitaxial quantum dots or electric and magnetic fields to color centers in 2D metal dichalcogenides provide limited spectral tunability. Here we adopt a chemical approach to synthesize a family of colloidal mixed-cation perovskite quantum dots ($\text{Cs}_{1-x}\text{FA}_{x}\text{PbBr}_3$) that show highly photo-stable, compositionally tunable si…
Solid-state microcavities combining ultra-small mode volume, wide-range resonance frequency tuning, as well as lossless coupling to a single mode fibre are integral tools for nanophotonics and quantum networks. We developed an integrated system providing all of these three indispensable properties. It consists of a nanofibre Bragg cavity (NFBC) with the mode volume of under 1 micro cubic meter and repeatable tuning capability over more than 20 nm at visible wavelengths. In order to demonstrate quantum light-matter interaction, we establish coupling of quantum dots to our tunable NFBC and achie…

Engineering the coupling between fundamental quantum excitations is at the heart of quantum science and technologies. A significant case is the creation of quantum light sources in which coupling between single photons and phonons can be controlled and harnessed to enable quantum information transduction. Here, we report the deterministic creation of quantum emitters featuring highly tunable coupling between excitons and phonons. The quantum emitters are formed in strain-induced quantum dots created in homobilayer semiconductor WSe2. The colocalization of quantum confined interlayer excitons a…
A solid state emitter coupled to a photonic crystal cavity exhibits increased photon emission into a single frequency mode. However, current designs for photonic crystal cavities coupled to quantum emitters have three main problems: emitters are placed near surfaces that can degrade their optical properties, the cavity fluorescence cannot be collected into a single useful mode for further routing, and post-fabrication tuning is not currently possible in a stable and reversible manner for each node individually. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid cavity design with minimal fabrication of the …
Long-range coherent interactions between quantum emitters are instrumental for quantum information and simulation technologies, but they are generally difficult to isolate from dissipation. Here, we show how such interactions can be obtained in photonic Weyl environments due to the emergence of an exotic bound state whose wavefunction displays power-law spatial confinement. Using an exact formalism, we show how this bound state can mediate coherent transfer of excitations between emitters, with virtually no dissipation and with a transfer rate that follows the same scaling with distance as the…

We demonstrate the strong coupling of a quantum dot and a graphene spherical shell coating it. Our simulations are the exact solutions of 3D Maxwell equations. Interaction produces sharp hybrid modes, even when the two are off-resonant, which are voltage-tunable (continuously) in an 80 meV interval. Despite a voltage-tunable quantum dot, the coupling of the light to these "very sharp" plexcitonic resonances is an order of magnitude larger than its coupling to a quantum dot. Hence, our results are very attractive for sensing applications and graphene display technologies with sharper colors. Mo…
We investigate the single photon scattering by an emitter chirally coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. The single-photon transport property is essentially different from the symmetrical coupling case. The single photons propagating towards the emitter in opposite directions show different transmission behaviors, which is a manifestation of the single-photon diode. In the ideal chiral coupling case, the transmission probability of the single photon transport in one direction is zero by critical coupling, while in the opposite direction it is unity. The diode works well only when the single-…
We investigate the interplay between Aharonov-Bohm (AB) caging and topological protection in a family of quasi-one-dimensional topological insulators, which we term CSSH ladders. Hybrids of the Creutz ladder and the SSH chain, they present a regime with completely flat bands, and a rich topological phase diagram, with several kinds of protected zero modes. These are reminiscent of the Creutz ladder edge states in some cases, and of the SSH chain edge states in others. Furthermore, their high degree of tunability, and the fact that they remain topologically protected even in small systems in th…
We derive the statistics of scattered photons from a $Λ$- or ladder-type three-level emitter (3LE) embedded in a 1D open waveguide. The weak probe photons in the waveguide are coupled to one of the two allowed transitions of the 3LE, and the other transition is driven by a control beam. This system shows electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) which is accompanied with the Autler-Townes splitting (ATS) at a strong driving by the control beam, and some of these effects have been observed recently. We show that the nature of second-order coherence of the transmitted probe photons near two…
The exchange of virtual photons between quantum optical emitters in cavity QED or quantum nanophotonic setups induces interactions between them which can be harnessed for quantum information and simulation purposes. So far, these interactions have been mostly characterized for two-level emitters, which restrict their application to engineering quantum gates among qubits or simulating spin-1/2 quantum many-body models. Here, we show how to harness multi-level emitters with several optical transitions to engineer a wide class of photon-mediated interactions between effective spin-1 systems. We c…
We present a new method to observe direct experimental evidence of Jaynes--Cummings nonlinearities in a strongly dissipative cavity quantum electrodynamics system, where large losses compete with the strong light-matter interaction. This is a highly topical problem, particularly for quantum dots in microcavities where transitions from higher rungs of the Jaynes--Cummings ladder remain to be evidenced explicitly. We compare coherent and incoherent excitations of the system and find that resonant excitation of the detuned emitter make it possible to unambiguously evidence few photon quantum nonl…
The photon blockade (PB) effect in emitter-cavity systems depends on the anharmonicity of the ladder of dressed energy eigenstates. The recent developments in color center photonics are leading toward experimental demonstrations of multi-emitter-cavity solid-state systems with an expanded set of energy levels compared to the traditionally studied single-emitter systems. We focus on the case of N = 2 nonidentical quasi-atoms strongly coupled to a nanocavity in the bad cavity regime (with parameters within reach of the color center systems), and discover three PB mechanisms: polaritonic, subradi…

Optical microcavities are a powerful tool to enhance spontaneous emission of individual quantum emitters. However, the broad emission spectra encountered in the solid state at room temperature limit the influence of a cavity, and call for ultra-small mode volume. We demonstrate Purcell-enhanced single photon emission from nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamonds coupled to a tunable fiber-based microcavity with a mode volume down to $1.0\,λ^{3}$. We record cavity-enhanced fluorescence images and study several single emitters with one cavity. The Purcell effect is evidenced by enhanced flu…
We study the Dicke phase transition in a disordered system of emitters coupled to the plasmonic modes of a graphene monolayer. This system has unique properties associated with the tunable, dissipative and broadband characters of the graphene surface plasmons, as well as the disorder due to the random spatial distribution and the inhomogeneous line-width broadening of the emitters. We apply the Keldysh functional-integral approach, and identify a normal phase, a superradiant phase and a spin-glass phase of the system. The conditions for these phases and their experimental signatures are discus…
We study the single-photon frequency conversion of a five-level emitter coupled to a Sagnac interferometer. We show that the unity conversion efficiency can be achieved either in resonance or off-resonance case under the ideal condition. In particular, the frequency of the output photon can be controlled by the frequencies and Rabi frequencies of the external driving fields.
The millimeter wave (mm-wave) frequency band provides exciting prospects for quantum science and devices, since many high-fidelity quantum emitters, including Rydberg atoms, molecules and silicon vacancies, exhibit resonances near 100 GHz. High-Q resonators at these frequencies would give access to strong interactions between emitters and single photons, leading to rich and unexplored quantum phenomena at temperatures above 1K. We report a 3D mm-wave cavity with a measured single-photon internal quality factor of $3 \times 10^{7}$ and mode volume of $0.14 \times λ^3$ at $98.2$ GHz, sufficient …

We present a combined classical and quantum electrodynamics description of the coupling between two circularly-polarized quantum emitters held above a metal surface supporting surface plasmons. Depending on their position and their natural frequency, the emitter-emitter interactions evolve from being reciprocal to nonreciprocal, which makes the system a highly tunable platform for chiral coupling at the nanoscale. By relaxing the stringent material and geometrical constraints for chirality, we explore the interplay between coherent and dissipative coupling mechanisms in the system. Thus, we re…
We explore amplification and cross-Kerr nonlinearity by a three-level emitter (3LE) embedded in a waveguide and driven by two light beams. The coherent amplification and cross-Kerr nonlinearity were demonstrated in recent experiments, respectively, with a V and a ladder-type 3LE coupled to an open superconducting transmission line carrying two microwave fields. Here, we consider $Λ$, V, and ladder-type 3LE, and compare the efficiency of coherent and incoherent amplification as well as the magnitude of the cross-Kerr phase shift in all three emitters. We apply the Heisenberg-Langevin equations …
The collective dynamics of two non-interacting two-level emitters, which are coupled to a structured wave guide that supports two-photon bound states, is investigated. Tuning the energy of the two emitters such that they are in resonance with the two-photon bound state energy band, we identify parameter regimes where the system displays fractional populations and essentially undamped Rabi oscillations. The Rabi oscillations, which have no analog in the single-emitter dynamics, are attributed to the existence of a collective polaron-like photonic state that is induced by the emitter-photon coup…
Combining solid state single photon emitters (SPE) with nanophotonic platforms is a key goal in integrated quantum photonics. In order to realize functionality in potentially scalable elements, suitable SPEs have to be bright, stable, and widely tunable at room temperature. In this work we show that selected SPEs embedded in a few layer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) meet these demands. In order to show the wide tunability of these SPEs we employ an AFM with a conductive tip to apply an electrostatic field to individual hBN emitters sandwiched between the tip and an indium tin oxide coated glas…
Multi-photon emitters are a sought-after resource in quantum photonics. Nonlinear interactions between a multi-level atomic system and a coherent drive can lead to resonant two-photon emission, but harvesting light from this process has remained a challenge due to the small oscillator strengths involved. Here we present a study of two-photon resonance fluorescence at microwave frequencies, using a superconducting, ladder-type artificial atom, a transmon, strongly coupled to a waveguide. We drive the two-photon transition between the ground and second-excited state at increasingly high powers a…
Solid state quantum emitters have shown strong potential for applications in quantum information, but spectral inhomogeneity of these emitters poses a significant challenge. We address this issue in a cavity-quantum dot system by demonstrating cavity-stimulated Raman spin flip emission. This process avoids populating the excited state of the emitter and generates a photon that is Raman shifted from the laser and enhanced by the cavity. The emission is spectrally narrow and tunable over a range of at least 125 GHz, which is two orders of magnitude greater than the natural linewidth. We obtain t…
Color centered-based single photon emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have shown promising photophysical properties as sources for quantum light emission. Despite significant advances towards such a goal, achieving lifetime-limited quantum light emission in h-BN has proven to be challenging, primarily due to various broadening mechanisms including spectral diffusion. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate suppression of spectral diffusion by applying an electrostatic field. We observe both Stark shift tuning of the resonant emission wavelength, and emission linewidth reduction…
We introduce a one-dimensional plaquette orbital model with a topology of a ladder and alternating interactions between $x$ and $z$ pseudospin components along both the ladder legs and on the rungs. We show that it is equivalent to an effective spin model in a magnetic field, with spin dimers that replace plaquettes and are coupled along the chain by three-spin interactions. Using perturbative treatment and mean field approaches with dimer correlations we study the ground state spin configuration and its defects in the lowest excited states. By the exact diagonalization approach we find that t…
We investigate the strong coupling regime of a self-assembled quantum dot in a tunable microcavity with dark-field laser spectroscopy. The high quality of the spectra allows the lineshapes to be analyzed revealing subtle quantum interferences. Agreement with a model calculation is achieved only by including exciton dephasing which reduces the cooperativity from a bare value of 9.0 to the time-averaged value 5.5. In the pursuit of high cooperativity, besides a high-Q and low mode-volume cavity, we demonstrate that equal efforts need to be taken towards lifetime-limited emitter linewidths.
Light-induced spin-orbit coupling is a flexible tool to study quantum magnetism with ultracold atoms. In this work we show that spin-orbit coupled Bose gases in a one-dimensional optical lattice can be mapped into a two-leg triangular ladder with staggered flux following a lowest-band truncation of the Hamiltonian. The effective flux and the ratio of the tunneling strengths can be independently adjusted to a wide range of values. We identify a certain regime of parameters where a hard-core boson approximation holds and the system realizes a frustrated triangular spin ladder with tunable flux. …
We develop a Floquet scattering formalism for the description of quasistationary states of microwave photons in a one-dimensional waveguide interacting with a nonlinear cavity by means of a periodically modulated coupling. This model is inspired by the recent progress in engineering of tunable coupling schemes with superconducting qubits. We argue that our model can realize the quantum analogue of an optical chopper. We find strong periodic modulations of the transmission and reflection envelopes in the scattered few-photon pulses, including photon compression and blockade, as well as dramatic…
We report the control of spontaneous emission from CdSe/ZnS core-shell quantum dots coupled to novel open-access optical microcavities. The cavities are fabricated by focused ion beam milling, and provide mode volumes less than a cubic micrometre. The quantum dot emission spectrum, spatial modes, and lifetime are all modified substantially by the presence of the cavity, and can be tuned by actively varying the cavity length. An increase in emission rate of 75% is achieved at room temperature, attributed to the Purcell effect in the 'bad emitter' regime. We demonstrate a high degree of control …
