Light-induced spin-orbit coupling is a flexible tool to study quantum magnetism with ultracold atoms. In this work we show that spin-orbit coupled Bose gases in a one-dimensional optical lattice can be mapped into a two-leg triangular ladder with staggered flux following a lowest-band truncation of the Hamiltonian. The effective flux and the ratio of the tunneling strengths can be independently adjusted to a wide range of values. We identify a certain regime of parameters where a hard-core boson approximation holds and the system realizes a frustrated triangular spin ladder with tunable flux. We study the properties of the effective spin Hamiltonian using the density-matrix renormalization-group method and determine the phase diagram at half-filling. It displays two phases: a uniform superfluid and a bond-ordered insulator. The latter can be stabilized only for low Raman detuning. Finally, we provide experimentally feasible trajectories across the parameter space of the SOC system that cross the predicted phase transition.
We investigate the ground state properties of ultracold atoms trapped in a two-leg ladder potential in the presence of an artificial magnetic field in a staggered configuration. We focus on the strongly interacting regime and use the Landau theory of phase transitions and a mean field Gutzwiller variational method to identify the stable superfluid phases and their boundaries with the Mott-insulator regime as a function of magnetic flux. In addition, we calculate the local and chiral currents of these superfluid phases, which show a staggered vortex anti-vortex configuration. The analytical res…
We consider interacting bosonic particles on a two-leg triangular ladder in the presence of an artificial gauge field. We employ density matrix renormalization group numerical simulations and analytical bosonization calculations to study the rich phase diagram of this system. We show that the interplay between the frustration induced by the triangular lattice geometry and the interactions gives rise to multiple chiral quantum phases. Phase transition between superfluid to Mott-insulating states occur, which can have Meissner or vortex character. Furthermore, a state that explicitly breaks the …
$^{87}{\rm Rb}$ atoms are known to have long-lived Rydberg excited states with controllable excitation amplitude (detuning) and strong repulsive van der Waals interaction $V_{{\bf r} {\bf r'}}$ between excited atoms at sites ${\bf r}$ and ${\bf r'}$. Here we study such atoms in a two-leg ladder geometry in the presence of both staggered and uniform detuning with amplitudes $Δ$ and $λ$ respectively. We show that when $V_{\bf r r'} \gg(\ll) Δ, λ$ for $|{\bf r}-{\bf r'}|=1(>1)$, these ladders host a plateau for a wide range of $λ/Δ$ where the ground states are selected by a quantum order-by-disor…
Polar molecules in geometrically frustrated lattices may result in a very rich landscape of quantum phases, due to the non-trivial interplay between frustration, and two- and possibly three-body inter-site interactions. In this paper, we illustrate this intriguing physics for the case of hard-core polar molecules in frustrated triangular ladders. Whereas commensurate lattice fillings result in gapped phases with bond-order and/or density-wave order, at incommensurate fillings we find chiral-, two-component-, and pair-superfluids. We show as well that, remarkably, polar molecules in frustrated …
Dressed Rydberg atoms in optical lattices are a promising platform for the quantum simulation of intriguing phenomena emerging in strongly interacting systems. Relevant to such a setup, we investigate the phase diagram of hard-core bosons in a triangular ladder with next-to-nearest-neighbor interaction along each leg and nearest-neighbors interactions without hopping between the legs. For weak interactions, Abelian bosonization predicts a spin density wave and a fully gapless Luttinger liquid phase. Such liquids transition to a 'spin-locked' cluster Luttinger liquid at strong interactions alon…
A study of spinless matter fermions coupled to a constrained $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory on a triangular ladder is presented. The triangular unit cell and the ladder geometry strongly modify the physics, as compared to previous analysis on the square lattice. In the static case, the even and odd gauge theories for the empty and filled ladder are identical. The gauge field dynamics due to the electric coupling is drastically influenced by the absence of periodic boundary conditions, rendering the deconfinement-confinement process a crossover in general and a quantum phase transition (…
We perform a density-matrix renormalization-group study of strongly interacting bosons on a three-leg ladder in the presence of a homogeneous flux. Focusing on one-third filling, we explore the phase diagram in dependence of the magnetic flux and the inter-leg tunneling strength. We find several phases including a Meissner phase, vortex liquids, a vortex lattice, as well as a staggered-current phase. Moreover, there are regions where the chiral current reverses its direction, both in the Meissner and in the staggered-current phase. While the reversal in the latter case can be ascribed to spont…
Ultracold Fermi gases with synthetic gauge field represent an excellent platform to study the combined effect of lattice frustration and an effective magnetic flux close to one flux quantum per particle. The minimal theoretical model to accomplish this task is a system of spinless noninteracting fermions on a triangular two-chain flux ladder. In this paper we consider this model close to half-filling, with interchain hopping amplitudes alternating along the zigzag bonds of the ladder and being small. In such setting qualitative changes in the ground state properties of the model, most notably …
We study the extended Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model on triangular cavity lattices and zigzag ladders. By using density-matrix renormalization group methods, we observe various types of solids with different density patterns and find evidence for light supersolids, which exist in extended regions of the phase diagram of the zigzag ladder. Furthermore, we observe strong pair correlations in the supersolid phase due to the interplay between the atoms in the cavities and atom-photon interaction. By means of cluster mean-field simulations and a scaling of the cluster size extending our analysis to …
Motivated by experiments on Josephson junction arrays in a magnetic field and ultracold interacting atoms in an optical lattice in the presence of synthetic orbital magnetic fields, we study the "fully frustrated" Bose-Hubbard model and quantum XY model with half a flux quantum per lattice plaquette. Using Monte Carlo simulations and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we show that the phase diagram of such kinetically frustrated bosons displays three phases on a two-leg ladder: a weakly interacting chiral superfluid phase with staggered loop currents which spontaneously br…
Emulation of gauge fields for ultracold atoms provides access to a class of exotic states arising in strong magnetic fields. Here we report on the experimental realisation of tunable staggered gauge fields in a periodically driven triangular lattice. For maximal staggered magnetic fluxes, the doubly degenerate superfluid ground state breaks both a discrete Z2 (Ising) symmetry and a continuous U(1) symmetry. By measuring an Ising order parameter, we observe a thermally driven phase transition from an ordered antiferromagnetic to an unordered paramagnetic state and textbook-like magnetisation cu…
We unveil a topological phase of interacting fermions on a two-leg ladder of unequal parity orbitals, derived from the experimentally realized double-well lattices by dimension reduction. $Z_2$ topological invariant originates simply from the staggered phases of $sp$-orbital quantum tunneling, requiring none of the previously known mechanisms such as spin-orbit coupling or artificial gauge field. Another unique feature is that upon crossing over to two dimensions with coupled ladders, the edge modes from each ladder form a parity-protected flat band at zero energy, opening the route to strongl…
The quest for experimental platforms that allow for the exploration, and even control, of the interplay of low dimensionality and frustration is a fundamental challenge in several fields of quantum many-body physics, such as quantum magnetism. Here, we propose the use of cold crystals of trapped ions to study a variety of frustrated quantum spin ladders. By optimizing the trap geometry, we show how to tailor the low dimensionality of the models by changing the number of legs of the ladders. Combined with a method for selectively hiding of ions provided by laser addressing, it becomes possible …
We study the superfluid and insulating phases of interacting bosons on the triangular lattice with an inverted dispersion, corresponding to frustrated hopping between sites. The resulting single-particle dispersion has multiple minima at nonzero wavevectors in momentum space, in contrast to the unique zero-wavevector minimum of the unfrustrated problem. As a consequence, the superfluid phase is unstable against developing additonal chiral order that breaks time reversal (T) and parity (P) symmetries by forming a condensate at nonzero wavevector. We demonstrate that the loss of superfluidity ca…
We study kinetic magnetism for the Fermi-Hubbard models in triangular type lattices, including a zigzag ladder, four- and six-legged triangular cylinders and a full two-dimensional triangular lattice. We focus on the regime of strong interactions, $U\gg t$ and filling factors around one electron per site. For temperatures well above the hopping strength, the Curie-Weiss form of the magnetic susceptibility suggests effective antiferromagnetic correlations for systems that are hole doped with respect to $ν=1$, and ferromagnetic correlations for systems with electron dopings. We show that these c…
