We study the moduli stabilization from the viewpoint of modular flavor symmetries. We systematically analyze stabilized moduli values in possible configurations of flux compactifications, investigating probabilities of moduli values and showing which moduli values are favorable from our moduli stabilization. Then, we examine their implications on modular symmetric flavor models. It is found that distributions of complex structure modulus $τ$ determining the flavor structure are clustered at a fixed point with the residual $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry in the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ fundamental region. Also, they are clustered at other specific points such as intersecting points between $|τ|^2=k/2$ and ${\rm Re}\,τ=0,\pm 1/4, \pm1/2$, although their probabilities are less than the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ fixed point. In general, CP-breaking vacua in the complex structure modulus are statistically disfavored in the string landscape. Among CP-breaking vacua, the values ${\rm Re}\,τ=\pm 1/4$ are most favorable in particular when the axio-dilaton $S$ is stabilized at ${\rm Re}\,S=\pm 1/4$. That shows a strong correlation between CP phases originated from string moduli.
We study the modular invariance in magnetized torus models. Modular invariant flavor model is a recently proposed hypothesis for solving the flavor puzzle, where the flavor symmetry originates from modular invariance. In this framework coupling constants such as Yukawa couplings are also transformed under the flavor symmetry. We show that the low-energy effective theory of magnetized torus models is invariant under a specific subgroup of the modular group. Since Yukawa couplings as well as chiral zero modes transform under the modular group, the above modular subgroup (referred to as modular f…
We study a symmetry breaking of residual flavor symmetries realized at fixed points of the moduli space. In the supersymmetric modular invariant theories, a small departure of the modulus from fixed points is required to realize fermion mass hierarchies and sizable CP-breaking effects. We investigate whether one can dynamically fix the moduli values in the vicinity of the fixed points in the context of Type IIB string theory. It is found that the string landscape prefers $|δτ| \simeq 10^{-5}$ for the deviation of the complex structure modulus from all fixed points and the CP-breaking vacuum is…
We revisit the modular flavor symmetry from a more general perspective. The scalar modular forms of principal congruence subgroups are extended to the vector-valued modular forms, then we have more possible finite modular groups including $Γ_N$ and $Γ'_N$ as the flavor symmetry. The theory of vector-valued modular forms provide a method of differential equation to construct the modular multiplets, and it also reveals the simple structure of the modular invariant mass models. We review the theory of vector-valued modular forms and give general results for the lower dimensional vector-valued mod…
We study the modular symmetry in magnetized D-brane models on $T^2$. Non-Abelian flavor symmetry $D_4$ in the model with magnetic flux $M=2$ (in a certain unit) is a subgroup of the modular symmetry. We also study the modular symmetry in heterotic orbifold models. The $T^2/Z_4$ orbifold model has the same modular symmetry as the magnetized brane model with $M=2$, and its flavor symmetry $D_4$ is a subgroup of the modular symmetry.
We study a scenario to derive four-dimensional modular flavor symmetric models from higher dimensional theory by assuming the compactification consistent with the modular symmetry. In our scenario, wavefunctions in extra dimensional compact space are modular forms. That leads to constraints on combinations between modular weights and $Γ_N$ ($Γ_N')$ representations of matter fields. We also present illustrating examples.
We study the spontaneous $CP$ violation through the stabilization of the modulus $τ$ in modular invariant flavor models. The $CP$-invaraiant potentential has the minimum only at ${\rm Re}[τ] = 0$ or 1/2. From this prediction, we study $CP$ violation in modular invariant flavor models. The physical $CP$ phase is vanishing. The important point for the $CP$ conservation is the $T$ transformation in the modular symmetry. One needs the violation of $T$ symmetry to realize the spontaneous $CP$ violation.
We study the flavor landscape of particle physics models based on a ten-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory compactified on magnetized tori preserving four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. Recently, we constructed a semi-realistic model which contains the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) using an Ansatz of magnetic fluxes and orbifolding projections. However, we can consider more various configurations of magnetic fluxes and orbifolding projections preserving four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry. We research systematically such possibilities for leading to MSSM-like m…
The flavor structure of the Standard Model might arise from random selection on a landscape. We propose a class of simple models, ``Gaussian landscapes,'' where Yukawa couplings derive from overlap integrals of Gaussian wavefunctions on extra-dimensions. Statistics of vacua are generated by scanning the peak positions of these zero-modes, giving probability distributions for all flavor observables. Gaussian landscapes can broadly account for all observed flavor patterns with very few free parameters. For example, the generation structure in the quark sector follows from the overlap integrals f…
The framework of compactified heterotic string theory offers consistent ultraviolet (UV) completions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. In this approach, the existence of flavor symmetries beyond the SM is imperative and the flavor symmetries can be derived from the top-down. Such a derivation uncovers a unified origin of traditional discrete flavor symmetries, discrete modular flavor symmetries, discrete R symmetries of supersymmetry, as well as CP symmetry - altogether called the eclectic flavor symmetry. I will show a specific example of such a top-down derived eclectic flavor …
We study the soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking terms due to the modulus F-term in the modular flavor models of leptons. It is found that the soft SUSY breaking terms are constrained by the modular forms, and specific patterns are derived. Those phenomenological implications are discussed in such as the lepton flavor violation, $μ\rightarrow e + γ$ decay. In order to examine numerically, two modular flavor $A_4$ models are taken. The SUSY breaking scale is significantly constrained by inputting the observed upper bound of the $μ\rightarrow e + γ$ decay. The SUSY mass scale is larger than aroun…
Flavor symmetry plays a crucial role in the standard model of particle physics but its origin is still unknown. We develop a new method (based on outer automorphisms of the Narain space group) to determine flavor symmetries within compactified string theory. A picture emerges where traditional (discrete) flavor symmetries, CP-like symmetries and modular symmetries (like T-duality) of string theory combine to unified flavor symmetries. The groups depend on the geometry of compact space and the geographical location of fields in the extra dimensions. We observe a phenomenon of "local flavor grou…
We study the modular symmetry on magnetized toroidal orbifolds with Scherk-Schwarz phases. In particular, we investigate finite modular flavor groups for three-generation modes on magnetized orbifolds. The three-generation modes can be the three-dimensional irreducible representations of covering groups and central extended groups of $Γ_N$ for $N=3,4,5,7,8,16$, that is, covering groups of $Δ(6(N/2)^2)$ for $N=$ even and central extensions of $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z}_{N})$ for $N=$odd with Scherk-Schwarz phases. We also study anomaly behaviors.
We examine a common origin of four-dimensional flavor, CP, and $U(1)_R$ symmetries in the context of heterotic string theory with standard embedding. We find that flavor and $U(1)_R$ symmetries are unified into the $Sp(2h+2, \mathbb{C})$ modular symmetries of Calabi-Yau threefolds with $h$ being the number of moduli fields. Together with the $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm CP}$ CP symmetry, they are enhanced to $GSp(2h+2, \mathbb{C})\simeq Sp(2h+2, \mathbb{C})\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2^{\rm CP}$ generalized symplectic modular symmetry. We exemplify the $S_3, S_4, T^\prime, S_9$ non-Abelian flavor symmetries on e…
Models with modular flavor symmetries have been thought to be highly predictive. We point out that these predictions are subject to corrections from non-holomorphic terms in the Lagrangean. Specifically, in the models discussed in the literature, the Kähler potential is not fixed by the symmetries, for instance. The most general Kähler potential consistent with the symmetries of the model contains additional terms with additional parameters, which reduce the predictive power of these constructions. We also comment on how one may conceivably retain the predictivity.
We derive the potential modular symmetries of heterotic string theory. For a toroidal compactification with Wilson line modulus, we obtain the Siegel modular group $\mathrm{Sp}(4,\mathbb{Z})$ that includes the modular symmetries $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_T$ and $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_U$ (of the "geometric" moduli $T$ and $U$) as well as mirror symmetry. In addition, string theory provides a candidate for a CP-like symmetry that enhances the Siegel modular group to $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{Z})$.
Discovering a selection principle and the origin of flavor symmetries from an ultraviolet completion of particle physics is an interesting open task. As a step in this direction, we classify all possible flavor symmetries of 4D massless spectra emerging from supersymmetric Abelian orbifold compactifications, including roto-translations and non-factorizable compact spaces, for generic moduli values. Although these symmetries are valid in all string theories, we focus on the E8 x E8 heterotic string. We perform the widest known search of E8 x E8 Abelian orbifold compactifications, yielding over …

Such a derivation uncovers a unified origin of traditional discrete flavor symmetries, discrete modular flavor symmetries, discrete R symmetries of supersymmetry, as well as charge-parity (CP) symmetry - altogether dubbed the eclectic flavor symmetry. The simultaneous study of top-down and bottom-up approaches to modular flavor symmetry leads necessarily to the concept of eclectic flavor groups. These are nontrivial products of modular and traditional flavor symmetries that exhibit the phenomenon of local flavor enhancement in moduli space. We develop methods to determine the eclectic flavor groups that can be consistently associated with a given traditional flavor symmetry. Applying these methods to a large family of prominent traditional flavor symmetries, we try to identify potential candidates for realistic eclectic flavor groups and sh…
We study the CP violation and the CP phase of quark mass matrices in modular flavor symmetric models. The CP symmetry remains at $τ= e^{2 πi/3}$ by a combination of the $T$-symmetry of the modular symmetry. However, the $T$-symmetry breaking may lead to the CP violation at the fixed point $τ= e^{2 πi/3}$. We study such a possibility in magnetized orbifold models as examples of modular flavor symmetric models. These models, in general, have more than one candidates for Higgs modes, while generic string compactifications also lead to several Higgs modes. These Higgs modes have different behavior…
The flavor structure of the Standard Model may arise from random selection on a landscape. In a class of simple models, called "Gaussian landscapes," Yukawa couplings derive from overlap integrals of Gaussian zero-mode wavefunctions on an extra-dimensional space. Statistics of vacua are generated by scanning the peak positions of these wavefunctions, giving probability distributions for all flavor observables. Gaussian landscapes can account for all of the major features of flavor, including both the small electroweak mixing in the quark sector and the large mixing observed in the lepton secto…
The fundamental theory of nature may allow a large landscape of vacua. Even if the theory contains a unified gauge symmetry, the 22 flavor parameters of the Standard Model, including neutrino masses, may be largely determined by the statistics of this landscape, and not by any symmetry. Then the measured values of the flavor parameters do not lead to any fundamental symmetries, but are statistical accidents; their precise values do not provide any insights into the fundamental theory, rather the overall pattern of flavor reflects the underlying landscape. We investigate whether random selectio…
In a consistent top-down approach based on orbifold compactifications, modular and traditional flavor symmetries combine nontrivially to the so-called eclectic flavor symmetry. We extend this scheme from two extra dimensions, discussed previously, to the six extra dimensions of string theory. By doing so, new insights on the nature of CP and its spontaneous breaking emerge. Moreover, we identify a new interpretation of R-symmetries as unbroken remnants from modular symmetries that are associated with geometrically stabilized complex structure moduli. Hence, all symmetries (i.e. modular, tradit…
We study modular symmetric quark flavor models without fine-tuning. Mass matrices are written in terms of modular forms, and modular forms in the vicinity of the modular fixed points become hierarchical depending on their residual charges. Thus modular symmetric flavor models in the vicinity of the modular fixed points have a possibility to describe mass hierarchies without fine-tuning. Since describing quark hierarchies without fine-tuning requires $Z_n$ residual symmetry with $n\geq 6$, we focus on $Γ_6$ modular symmetry in the vicinity of the cusp $τ=i\infty$ where $Z_6$ residual symmetry r…
We present a detailed analysis of the eclectic flavor structure of the two-dimensional $\mathbb Z_2$ orbifold with its two unconstrained moduli $T$ and $U$ as well as $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)_T\times \mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)_U$ modular symmetry. This provides a thorough understanding of mirror symmetry as well as the $R$-symmetries that appear as a consequence of the automorphy factors of modular transformations. It leads to a complete picture of local flavor unification in the $(T,U)$ modulus landscape. In view of applications towards the flavor structure of particle physics models, we are l…
We study a double covering of modular $A_4$ flavor symmetry in which we construct lepton models in cases of canonical seesaw and radiative seesaw models. Through $χ$ square numerical analysis, we show some predictions for the cases, depending on normal and inverted hierarchies.
We study quark and lepton mass matrices derived from magnetized $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold models. Quark and lepton masses have a large hierarchy. In addition, mixing angles are large in the lepton sector, while those are small in the quark sector. We find that this structure can be realized in certain flavor models, which are identified by the zero points of the zero-mode wave functions of fermions and Higgs modes. We classify such realistic flavor models. Fixed points $τ=i$, $e^{2πi/3}$ and $i\infty$ of the modulus $τ$ play a role in realizing a large mass hierarchy through our scenario, wh…
Modular flavor symmetries provide us with a new, promising approach to the flavor problem. However, in their original formulation the kinetic terms of the standard model fields do not have a preferred form, thus introducing additional parameters, which limit the predictive power of this scheme. In this work, we introduce the scheme of quasi-eclectic flavor symmetries as a simple fix. These symmetries are the direct product of a modular and a traditional flavor symmetry, which are spontaneously broken to a diagonal modular flavor subgroup. This allows us to construct a version of Feruglio's mod…
Modular flavor symmetry can be used to explain the quark and lepton flavor structures. The SUSY partners of quarks and leptons, which share the same superpotential with the quarks and leptons, will also be constrained by the modular flavor structure and show a different flavor(mixing) pattern at the GUT scale. So, in realistic modular flavor models with SUSY completion, constraints from the collider and DM constraints can also be used to constrain the possible values of the modulus parameter. In the first part of this work, we discuss the possibility that the $S_3$ modular symmetry can be pres…
We study Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) like flavor models with modular symmetry. The FN mechanism is a convincing solution to the flavor puzzle in quark sector. The FN mechanism requires an extra $U(1)$ gauge symmetry which is broken at high energy. Alternatively, in the framework of modular symmetry the modular weights can play the role of the FN charges of the extra $U(1)$ symmetry. Based on the FN-like mechanism with modular symmetry we present new flavor models for quark sector. Assuming that the three generations have a common representation under modular symmetry, our models simply reproduce the…
Modular symmetries naturally combine with traditional flavor symmetries and $\mathcal{CP}$, giving rise to the so-called eclectic flavor symmetry. We apply this scheme to the two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold, which is equipped with two modular symmetries $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_T$ and $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_U$ associated with two moduli: the Kähler modulus $T$ and the complex structure modulus $U$. The resulting finite modular group is $((S_3\times S_3)\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_4)\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ including mirror symmetry (that exchanges $T$ and $U$) and a generalized $\mathcal{CP}$-…
We study the lepton flavor models, whose flavor symmetries are finite subgroups of the modular group such as $S_3$ and $A_4$. In our models, couplings are also nontrivial representations of these groups and modular functions of the modulus. We study the possibilities that these models realize realistic values of neutrino masses and lepton mixing angles.
A top-down approach to the flavor problem motivated from string theory leads to the concept of eclectic flavor groups that combine traditional and modular flavor symmetries. To make contact with models constructed in the bottom-up approach, we analyze a specific example based on the eclectic flavor group Omega(1) (a nontrivial combination of the traditional flavor group Delta(54) and the finite modular group T') in order to extract general lessons from the eclectic scheme. We observe that this scheme is highly predictive since it severely restricts the possible group representations and modula…
We study the modular symmetric standard-model effective field theory. We employ the stringy Ansatz on coupling structure that 4-point couplings $y^{(4)}$ of matter fields are written by a product of 3-point couplings $y^{(3)}$ of matter fields, i.e., $y^{(4)} = y^{(3)}y^{(3)}$. In this framework, we discuss the flavor structure of bilinear fermion operators and 4-fermion operators, where the holomorphic and anti-holomorphic modular forms appear. From the Ansatz, the $A_4$ modular-invariant semileptonic four-fermion operator $[\,\bar E_R ΓE_R][\,\bar D_R ΓD_R\,]$ does not lead to the flavor cha…
We propose to generate the flavor structures of the Standard Model plus neutrinos from flipped SU(5) GUT with $A_4$ modular flavor symmetry. Possible way to assign different moduli values for quarks and leptons in modular GUT scheme is discussed. We propose to reduce the multiple modular symmetries to a single modular symmetry in the low energy effective theory with proper boundary conditions. We classify all possible scenarios in this scheme according to the assignments of the modular $A_4$ representations for matter superfields and give the expressions of the quark and lepton mass matrices p…
Modular transformations of string theory (including the well-known stringy dualities) play a crucial role in the discussion of discrete flavor symmetries in the Standard Model. They are at the origin of CP transformations and provide a unification of CP with traditional flavor symmetries. Here, we present a novel, fully systematic method to reliably compute the unified flavor symmetry of the low-energy effective theory, including enhancements from the modular transformations of string theory. The unified flavor group is non-universal in moduli space and exhibits the phenomenon of "Local Flavor…
