We introduce 3D-FRONT (3D Furnished Rooms with layOuts and semaNTics), a new, large-scale, and comprehensive repository of synthetic indoor scenes highlighted by professionally designed layouts and a large number of rooms populated by high-quality textured 3D models with style compatibility. From layout semantics down to texture details of individual objects, our dataset is freely available to the academic community and beyond. Currently, 3D-FRONT contains 18,968 rooms diversely furnished by 3D objects, far surpassing all publicly available scene datasets. In addition, the 13,151 furniture objects all come with high-quality textures. While the floorplans and layout designs are directly sourced from professional creations, the interior designs in terms of furniture styles, color, and textures have been carefully curated based on a recommender system we develop to attain consistent styles as expert designs. Furthermore, we release Trescope, a light-weight rendering tool, to support benchmark rendering of 2D images and annotations from 3D-FRONT. We demonstrate two applications, interior scene synthesis and texture synthesis, that are especially tailored to the strengths of our new dataset. This paper proposes a new approach, Flat2Layout, for estimating general indoor room layout from a single-view RGB image whereas existing methods can only produce layout topologies captured from the box-shaped room. The proposed flat representation encodes the layout information into row vectors which are treated as the training target of the deep model. A dynamic programming based postprocessing is employed to decode the estimated flat output from the deep model into the final room layout. Flat2Layout achieves state-of-the-art performance on existing room layout benchmark. This paper also cons…

We present a deep learning framework, called DuLa-Net, to predict Manhattan-world 3D room layouts from a single RGB panorama. To achieve better prediction accuracy, our method leverages two projections of the panorama at once, namely the equirectangular panorama-view and the perspective ceiling-view, that each contains different clues about the room layouts. Our network architecture consists of two encoder-decoder branches for analyzing each of the two views. In addition, a novel feature fusion structure is proposed to connect the two branches, which are then jointly trained to predict the 2D …

We present a novel method to reconstruct the 3D layout of a room (walls, floors, ceilings) from a single perspective view in challenging conditions, by contrast with previous single-view methods restricted to cuboid-shaped layouts. This input view can consist of a color image only, but considering a depth map results in a more accurate reconstruction. Our approach is formalized as solving a constrained discrete optimization problem to find the set of 3D polygons that constitute the layout. In order to deal with occlusions between components of the layout, which is a problem ignored by previous…
In this paper, we propose an alternative method to estimate room layouts of cluttered indoor scenes. This method enjoys the benefits of two novel techniques. The first one is semantic transfer (ST), which is: (1) a formulation to integrate the relationship between scene clutter and room layout into convolutional neural networks; (2) an architecture that can be end-to-end trained; (3) a practical strategy to initialize weights for very deep networks under unbalanced training data distribution. ST allows us to extract highly robust features under various circumstances, and in order to address th…

In this paper, we propose an adversarial model for producing furniture layout for interior scene synthesis when the interior room is rotated. The proposed model combines a conditional adversarial network, a rotation module, a mode module, and a rotation discriminator module. As compared with the prior work on scene synthesis, our proposed three modules enhance the ability of auto-layout generation and reduce the mode collapse during the rotation of the interior room. We conduct our experiments on a proposed real-world interior layout dataset that contains 14400 designs from the professional de…

In this paper, we propose an end-end model for producing furniture layout for interior scene synthesis from the random vector. This proposed model is aimed to support professional interior designers to produce the interior decoration solutions more quickly. The proposed model combines a conditional floor-plan module of the room, a conditional graphical floor-plan module of the room and a conditional layout module. As compared with the prior work on scene synthesis, our proposed three modules enhance the ability of auto-layout generation given the dimensional category of the room. We conduct ou…

Existing view synthesis methods mainly focus on the perspective images and have shown promising results. However, due to the limited field-of-view of the pinhole camera, the performance quickly degrades when large camera movements are adopted. In this paper, we make the first attempt to generate novel views from a single indoor panorama and take the large camera translations into consideration. To tackle this challenging problem, we first use Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to extract the deep features and estimate the depth map from the source-view image. Then, we leverage the room layou…

Panorama images have a much larger field-of-view thus naturally encode enriched scene context information compared to standard perspective images, which however is not well exploited in the previous scene understanding methods. In this paper, we propose a novel method for panoramic 3D scene understanding which recovers the 3D room layout and the shape, pose, position, and semantic category for each object from a single full-view panorama image. In order to fully utilize the rich context information, we design a novel graph neural network based context model to predict the relationship among ob…
Analysis of indoor spaces requires topological information. In this paper, we propose to extract topological information from room attributes using what we call Iterative and adaptive graph Topology Learning (ITL). ITL progressively predicts multiple relations between rooms; at each iteration, it improves node embeddings, which in turn facilitates generation of a better topological graph structure. This notion of iterative improvement of node embeddings and topological graph structure is in the same spirit as \cite{chen2020iterative}. However, while \cite{chen2020iterative} computes the adjace…
In this paper, we present a new approach to estimate the layout of a room from its single image. While recent approaches for this task use robust features learnt from data, they resort to optimization for detecting the final layout. In addition to using learnt robust features, our approach learns an additional ranking function to estimate the final layout instead of using optimization. To learn this ranking function, we propose a framework to train a CNN using max-margin structure cost. Also, while most approaches aim at detecting cuboidal layouts, our approach detects non-cuboidal layouts for…

This paper focuses on the task of room layout estimation from a monocular RGB image. Prior works break the problem into two sub-tasks: semantic segmentation of floor, walls, ceiling to produce layout hypotheses, followed by an iterative optimization step to rank these hypotheses. In contrast, we adopt a more direct formulation of this problem as one of estimating an ordered set of room layout keypoints. The room layout and the corresponding segmentation is completely specified given the locations of these ordered keypoints. We predict the locations of the room layout keypoints using RoomNet, a…

We present a new approach to the problem of estimating the 3D room layout from a single panoramic image. We represent room layout as three 1D vectors that encode, at each image column, the boundary positions of floor-wall and ceiling-wall, and the existence of wall-wall boundary. The proposed network, HorizonNet, trained for predicting 1D layout, outperforms previous state-of-the-art approaches. The designed post-processing procedure for recovering 3D room layouts from 1D predictions can automatically infer the room shape with low computation cost - it takes less than 20ms for a panorama image…
In this paper, we propose PanoViT, a panorama vision transformer to estimate the room layout from a single panoramic image. Compared to CNN models, our PanoViT is more proficient in learning global information from the panoramic image for the estimation of complex room layouts. Considering the difference between a perspective image and an equirectangular image, we design a novel recurrent position embedding and a patch sampling method for the processing of panoramic images. In addition to extracting global information, PanoViT also includes a frequency-domain edge enhancement module and a 3D l…

Single-image room layout reconstruction aims to reconstruct the enclosed 3D structure of a room from a single image. Most previous work relies on the cuboid-shape prior. This paper considers a more general indoor assumption, i.e., the room layout consists of a single ceiling, a single floor, and several vertical walls. To this end, we first employ Convolutional Neural Networks to detect planes and vertical lines between adjacent walls. Meanwhile, estimating the 3D parameters for each plane. Then, a simple yet effective geometric reasoning method is adopted to achieve room layout reconstruction…

3D room layout estimation by a single panorama using deep neural networks has made great progress. However, previous approaches can not obtain efficient geometry awareness of room layout with the only latitude of boundaries or horizon-depth. We present that using horizon-depth along with room height can obtain omnidirectional-geometry awareness of room layout in both horizontal and vertical directions. In addition, we propose a planar-geometry aware loss function with normals and gradients of normals to supervise the planeness of walls and turning of corners. We propose an efficient network, L…
We propose a method for room layout estimation that does not rely on the typical box approximation or Manhattan world assumption. Instead, we reformulate the geometry inference problem as an instance detection task, which we solve by directly regressing 3D planes using an R-CNN. We then use a variant of probabilistic clustering to combine the 3D planes regressed at each frame in a video sequence, with their respective camera poses, into a single global 3D room layout estimate. Finally, we showcase results which make no assumptions about perpendicular alignment, so can deal effectively with wal…

The task of room layout estimation is to locate the wall-floor, wall-ceiling, and wall-wall boundaries. Most recent methods solve this problem based on edge/keypoint detection or semantic segmentation. However, these approaches have shown limited attention on the geometry of the dominant planes and the intersection between them, which has significant impact on room layout. In this work, we propose to incorporate geometric reasoning to deep learning for layout estimation. Our approach learns to infer the depth maps of the dominant planes in the scene by predicting the pixel-level surface parame…

In this paper, we propose a new deep learning-based method for estimating room layout given a pair of 360 panoramas. Our system, called Position-aware Stereo Merging Network or PSMNet, is an end-to-end joint layout-pose estimator. PSMNet consists of a Stereo Pano Pose (SP2) transformer and a novel Cross-Perspective Projection (CP2) layer. The stereo-view SP2 transformer is used to implicitly infer correspondences between views, and can handle noisy poses. The pose-aware CP2 layer is designed to render features from the adjacent view to the anchor (reference) view, in order to perform view fusi…
We present the first self-supervised method to train panoramic room layout estimation models without any labeled data. Unlike per-pixel dense depth that provides abundant correspondence constraints, layout representation is sparse and topological, hindering the use of self-supervised reprojection consistency on images. To address this issue, we propose Differentiable Layout View Rendering, which can warp a source image to the target camera pose given the estimated layout from the target image. As each rendered pixel is differentiable with respect to the estimated layout, we can now train the l…
We study the problem of estimating room layouts from a single panorama image. Most former works have two stages: feature extraction and parametric model fitting. Here we propose an end-to-end method that directly predicts parametric layouts from an input panorama image. It exploits an implicit encoding procedure that embeds parametric layouts into a latent space. Then learning a mapping from images to this latent space makes end-to-end room layout estimation possible. However end-to-end methods have several notorious drawbacks despite many intriguing properties. A widely raised criticism is th…

We propose a novel method to efficiently estimate the spatial layout of a room from a single monocular RGB image. As existing approaches based on low-level feature extraction, followed by a vanishing point estimation are very slow and often unreliable in realistic scenarios, we build on semantic segmentation of the input image. To obtain better segmentations, we introduce a robust, accurate and very efficient hypothesize-and-test scheme. The key idea is to use three segmentation hypotheses, each based on a different number of visible walls. For each hypothesis, we predict the image locations o…

This paper presents a method of estimating the geometry of a room and the 3D pose of objects from a single 360-degree panorama image. Assuming Manhattan World geometry, we formulate the task as a Bayesian inference problem in which we estimate positions and orientations of walls and objects. The method combines surface normal estimation, 2D object detection and 3D object pose estimation. Quantitative results are presented on a dataset of synthetically generated 3D rooms containing objects, as well as on a subset of hand-labeled images from the public SUN360 dataset.
We present a structured graph variational autoencoder for generating the layout of indoor 3D scenes. Given the room type (e.g., living room or library) and the room layout (e.g., room elements such as floor and walls), our architecture generates a collection of objects (e.g., furniture items such as sofa, table and chairs) that is consistent with the room type and layout. This is a challenging problem because the generated scene should satisfy multiple constrains, e.g., each object must lie inside the room and two objects cannot occupy the same volume. To address these challenges, we propose a…

We present 360-DFPE, a sequential floor plan estimation method that directly takes 360-images as input without relying on active sensors or 3D information. Our approach leverages a loosely coupled integration between a monocular visual SLAM solution and a monocular 360-room layout approach, which estimate camera poses and layout geometries, respectively. Since our task is to sequentially capture the floor plan using monocular images, the entire scene structure, room instances, and room shapes are unknown. To tackle these challenges, we first handle the scale difference between visual odometry …

We propose an algorithm to predict room layout from a single image that generalizes across panoramas and perspective images, cuboid layouts and more general layouts (e.g. L-shape room). Our method operates directly on the panoramic image, rather than decomposing into perspective images as do recent works. Our network architecture is similar to that of RoomNet, but we show improvements due to aligning the image based on vanishing points, predicting multiple layout elements (corners, boundaries, size and translation), and fitting a constrained Manhattan layout to the resulting predictions. Our m…

Predicting 3D room layout from single image is a challenging task with many applications. In this paper, we propose a new training and post-processing method for 3D room layout estimation, built on a recent state-of-the-art 3D room layout estimation model. Experimental results show our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches by a large margin in predicting visible room layout. Our method has obtained the 3rd place in 2020 Holistic Scene Structures for 3D Vision Workshop.
Given a single RGB panorama, the goal of 3D layout reconstruction is to estimate the room layout by predicting the corners, floor boundary, and ceiling boundary. A common approach has been to use standard convolutional networks to predict the corners and boundaries, followed by post-processing to generate the 3D layout. However, the space-varying distortions in panoramic images are not compatible with the translational equivariance property of standard convolutions, thus degrading performance. Instead, we propose to use spherical convolutions. The resulting network, which we call OmniLayout pe…
Significant geometric structures can be compactly described by global wireframes in the estimation of 3D room layout from a single panoramic image. Based on this observation, we present an alternative approach to estimate the walls in 3D space by modeling long-range geometric patterns in a learnable Hough Transform block. We transform the image feature from a cubemap tile to the Hough space of a Manhattan world and directly map the feature to the geometric output. The convolutional layers not only learn the local gradient-like line features, but also utilize the global information to successfu…

Room layout estimation is a long-existing robotic vision task that benefits both environment sensing and motion planning. However, layout estimation using point clouds (PCs) still suffers from data scarcity due to annotation difficulty. As such, we address the semi-supervised setting of this task based upon the idea of model exponential moving averaging. But adapting this scheme to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) solution for PC-based layout estimation is not straightforward. To this end, we define a quad set matching strategy and several consistency losses based upon metrics tailored for layout q…

Although significant progress has been made in room layout estimation, most methods aim to reduce the loss in the 2D pixel coordinate rather than exploiting the room structure in the 3D space. Towards reconstructing the room layout in 3D, we formulate the task of 360 layout estimation as a problem of predicting depth on the horizon line of a panorama. Specifically, we propose the Differentiable Depth Rendering procedure to make the conversion from layout to depth prediction differentiable, thus making our proposed model end-to-end trainable while leveraging the 3D geometric information, withou…

Based on the Manhattan World assumption, most existing indoor layout estimation schemes focus on recovering layouts from vertically compressed 1D sequences. However, the compression procedure confuses the semantics of different planes, yielding inferior performance with ambiguous interpretability. To address this issue, we propose to disentangle this 1D representation by pre-segmenting orthogonal (vertical and horizontal) planes from a complex scene, explicitly capturing the geometric cues for indoor layout estimation. Considering the symmetry between the floor boundary and ceiling boundary, w…

With such images, all scene is seen at once, allowing to recover closed geometries. Our method combines strategically the accuracy provided by geometric reasoning (lines and vanishing points) with the higher level of data abstraction and pattern recognition achieved by deep learning techniques (edge and normal maps). Thus, we extract structural corners from which we generate layout hypotheses of the room assuming Manhattan world. The best layout model is selected, achie…

3D scene understanding from point clouds plays a vital role for various robotic applications. Unfortunately, current state-of-the-art methods use separate neural networks for different tasks like object detection or room layout estimation. Such a scheme has two limitations: 1) Storing and running several networks for different tasks are expensive for typical robotic platforms. 2) The intrinsic structure of separate outputs are ignored and potentially violated. To this end, we propose the first transformer architecture that predicts 3D objects and layouts simultaneously, using point cloud input…

Spherical cameras capture scenes in a holistic manner and have been used for room layout estimation. Recently, with the availability of appropriate datasets, there has also been progress in depth estimation from a single omnidirectional image. While these two tasks are complementary, few works have been able to explore them in parallel to advance indoor geometric perception, and those that have done so either relied on synthetic data, or used small scale datasets, as few options are available that include both layout annotations and dense depth maps in real scenes. This is partly due to the ne…
The task of estimating the spatial layout of cluttered indoor scenes from a single RGB image is addressed in this work. Existing solutions to this problems largely rely on hand-craft features and vanishing lines, and they often fail in highly cluttered indoor rooms. The proposed coarse-to-fine indoor layout estimation (CFILE) method consists of two stages: 1) coarse layout estimation; and 2) fine layout localization. In the first stage, we adopt a fully convolutional neural network (FCN) to obtain a coarse-scale room layout estimate that is close to the ground truth globally. The proposed FCN …
