We use a neural network ansatz originally designed for the variational optimization of quantum systems to study dynamical large deviations in classical ones. We obtain the scaled cumulant-generating function for the dynamical activity of the Fredrickson-Andersen model, a prototypical kinetically constrained model, in one and two dimensions, and present the first size-scaling analysis of the dynamical activity in two dimensions. These results provide a new route to the study of dynamical large-deviation functions, and highlight the broad applicability of the neural-network state ansatz across domains in physics.
We study a one-dimensional classical stochastic kinetically constrained model (KCM) inspired by Rydberg atoms in their "facilitated" regime, where sites can flip only if a single of their nearest neighbours is excited. We call this model "XOR-FA" to distinguish it from the standard Fredrickson-Andersen (FA) model. We describe the dynamics of the XOR-FA model, including its relation to simple exclusion processes in its domain wall representation. The interesting relaxation dynamics of the XOR-FA is related to the prominence of large dynamical fluctuations that lead to phase transitions between …
The East model is the simplest one-dimensional kinetically-constrained model of $N$ spins with a trivial equilibrium that displays anomalously large spatio-temporal fluctuations, with characteristic "space-time bubbles" in trajectory space, and with a discontinuity at the origin for the first derivative of the scaled cumulant generating function of the total activity. These striking dynamical properties are revisited via the large deviations at various levels for the relevant local empirical densities and activities that only involve two consecutive spins. This framework allows to characterize…
Here we demonstrate that tensor network techniques - originally devised for the analysis of quantum many-body problems - are well suited for the detailed study of rare event statistics in kinetically constrained models (KCMs). As concrete examples we consider the Fredrickson-Andersen and East models, two paradigmatic KCMs relevant to the modelling of glasses. We show how variational matrix product states allow to numerically approximate - systematically and with high accuracy - the leading eigenstates of the tilted dynamical generators which encode the large deviation statistics of the dynamic…
Kinetically constrained models (KCM) generically have trivial thermodynamics and yet manifest rich glassy dynamics. In order to resolve the thermodynamics-dynamics disconnect in KCMs, we derive a KCM by coarse-graining a non-trivial thermodynamic model with a solvable partition function. Blending of thermodynamics to the KCM makes the role of landscape properties on the relaxation times, fragility and its crossover analytically transparent. Using Bethe ansatz, we calculate the time-dependent $N$-point probability function in the distinct dynamical regimes of the landscapes; the contribution of…
We determine the finite size corrections to the large deviation function of the activity in a kinetically constrained model (the Fredrickson-Andersen model in one dimension), in the regime of dynamical phase coexistence. Numerical results agree with an effective model where the boundary between active and inactive regions is described by a Brownian interface.
Strong and fragile glass relaxation behaviours are obtained simply changing the constraints of the kinetically constrained Ising chain from symmetric to purely asymmetric. We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of those two models focusing on the Kovacs effect and the fluctuation--dissipation relations. The Kovacs or memory effect, commonly observed in structural glasses, is present for both constraints but enhanced with the asymmetric ones. Most surprisingly, the related fluctuation-dissipation (FD) relations satisfy the FD theorem in both cases. This result strongly differs from the simple…
We show that the dynamics of kinetically constrained models of glass formers takes place at a first-order coexistence line between active and inactive dynamical phases. We prove this by computing the large-deviation functions of suitable space-time observables, such as the number of configuration changes in a trajectory. We present analytic results for dynamic facilitated models in a mean-field approximation, and numerical results for the Fredrickson-Andersen model, the East model, and constrained lattice gases, in various dimensions. This dynamical first-order transition is generic in kinetic…
We analyse metastable states in the East model, using a recently-proposed patch-repetition analysis based on time-averaged density profiles. The results reveal a hierarchy of states of varying lifetimes, consistent with previous studies in which the metastable states were identified and used to explain the glassy dynamics of the model. We establish a mapping between these states and configurations of systems of hard rods, which allows us to analyse both typical and atypical metastable states. We discuss connections between the complexity of metastable states and large-deviation functions of dy…
We study the large deviations of sums of correlated random variables described by a matrix product ansatz, which generalizes the product structure of independent random variables to matrices whose non-commutativity is the source of correlations. We show with specific examples that different large deviation behaviors can be found with this ansatz. In particular, it is possible to construct sums of correlated random variables that violate the Law of Large Numbers, the Central Limit Theorem, as well as sums that have nonconvex rate functions or rate functions with linear parts or plateaux.
We describe a simple form of importance sampling designed to bound and compute large-deviation rate functions for time-extensive dynamical observables in continuous-time Markov chains. We start with a model, defined by a set of rates, and a time-extensive dynamical observable. We construct a reference model, a variational ansatz for the behavior of the original model conditioned on atypical values of the observable. Direct simulation of the reference model provides an upper bound on the large-deviation rate function associated with the original model, an estimate of the tightness of the bound,…
The large deviation (LD) statistics of dynamical observables is encoded in the spectral properties of deformed Markov generators. Recent works have shown that tensor network methods are well suited to compute the relevant leading eigenvalues and eigenvectors accurately. However, the efficient generation of the corresponding rare trajectories is a harder task. Here we show how to exploit the MPS approximation of the dominant eigenvector to implement an efficient sampling scheme which closely resembles the optimal (so-called "Doob") dynamics that realises the rare events. We demonstrate our appr…
Recent work has shown the effectiveness of tensor network methods for computing large deviation functions in constrained stochastic models in the infinite time limit. Here we show that these methods can also be used to study the statistics of dynamical observables at arbitrary finite time. This is a harder problem because, in contrast to the infinite time case where only the extremal eigenstate of a tilted Markov generator is relevant, for finite time the whole spectrum plays a role. We show that finite time dynamical partition sums can be computed efficiently and accurately in one dimension u…
We investigate the dynamics of kinetically constrained models of glass formers by analysing the statistics of trajectories of the dynamics, or histories, using large deviation function methods. We show that, in general, these models exhibit a first-order dynamical transition between active and inactive dynamical phases. We argue that the dynamical heterogeneities displayed by these systems are a manifestation of dynamical first-order phase coexistence. In particular, we calculate dynamical large deviation functions, both analytically and numerically, for the Fredrickson-Andersen model, the Eas…
We study the statistical properties of the long-time dynamics of the rule 54 reversible cellular automaton (CA), driven stochastically at its boundaries. This CA can be considered as a discrete-time and deterministic version of the Fredrickson-Andersen kinetically constrained model (KCM). By means of a matrix product ansatz, we compute the exact large deviation cumulant generating functions for a wide range of time-extensive observables of the dynamics, together with their associated rate functions and conditioned long-time distributions over configurations. We show that for all instances of b…
These lecture notes give a short review of methods such as the matrix ansatz, the additivity principle or the macroscopic fluctuation theory, developed recently in the theory of non-equilibrium phenomena. They show how these methods allow to calculate the fluctuations and large deviations of the density and of the current in non-equilibrium steady states of systems like exclusion processes. The properties of these fluctuations and large deviation functions in non-equilibrium steady states (for example non-Gaussian fluctuations of density or non-convexity of the large deviation function which g…
In these four lectures I describe basic ideas and methods applicable to both classical and quantum systems displaying slow relaxation and non-equilibrium dynamics. The first half of these notes considers classical systems, and the second half, quantum systems. In Lecture 1, I briefly review the glass transition problem as a paradigm of slow relaxation and dynamical arrest in classical many-body systems. I discuss theoretical perspectives on how to think about glasses, and in particular how to model them in terms of kinetically constrained dynamics. In Lecture 2, I describe how via large deviat…
We consider the probability distribution of large deviations in the spin-glass free energy for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick mean field model, i.e. the exponentially small probability of finding a system with intensive free energy smaller than the most likely one. This result is obtained by computing $Φ(n,T)=T \bar{Z^n}/ n$, i.e. the average value of the partition function to the power $n$ as a function of $n$. We study in full details the phase diagram of $Φ(n,T)$ in the $(n,T)$ plane computing in particular the stability of the replica-symmetric solution. At low temperatures we compute $Φ(n,T)…
We present a numerical study of the dynamics of the one-dimensional Ising model by applying the large-deviation method to describe ensembles of dynamical trajectories. In this approach trajectories are classified according to a dynamical order parameter and the structure of ensembles of trajectories can be understood from the properties of large-deviation functions, which play the role of dynamical free-energies. We consider both Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics, and also the presence of a magnetic field. For Glauber dynamics in the absence of a field we confirm the analytic predictions of Jack a…
We consider two cases of kinetically constrained models, namely East and FA-1f models. The object of interest of our work is the activity A(t) defined as the total number of configuration changes in the interval [0,t] for the dynamics on a finite domain. It has been shown in [GJLPDW1,GJLPDW2] that the large deviations of the activity exhibit a non-equilibirum phase transition in the thermodynamic limit and that reducing the activity is more likely than increasing it due to a blocking mechanism induced by the constraints. In this paper, we study the finite size effects around this first order p…
We study the statistics of large deviations of the intensive work done in an interaction quench of a one-dimensional Bose gas with a large number N of particles, system size L and fixed density. We consider the case in which the system is initially prepared in the non-interacting ground state and a repulsive interaction is suddenly turned on. For large deviations of the work below its mean value, we show that the large deviation principle holds by means of the quench action approach. Using the latter, we compute exactly the so-called rate function, and study its properties analytically. In par…
The statistics of the average height fluctuation of the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang(KPZ)-type surface is investigated. Guided by the idea of local stationarity, we derive the scaling form of the characteristic function in the early-time regime, $t\ll N^{3/2}$ with $t$ time and $N$ the system size, from the known characteristic function in the stationary state ($t\gg N^{3/2}$) of the single-step model derivable from a Bethe Ansatz solution, and thereby find the scaling properties of the cumulants and the large deviation function in the early-time regime. These results, combined with the…
We evaluate the exact energy current and scaled cumulant generating function (related to the large-deviation function) in non-equilibrium steady states with energy flow, in any integrable model of relativistic quantum field theory (IQFT) with diagonal scattering. Our derivations are based on various recent results of D. Bernard and B. Doyon. The steady states are built by connecting homogeneously two infinite halves of the system thermalized at different temperatures $T_l$, $T_r$, and waiting for a long time. We evaluate the current $J(T_l,T_r)$ using the exact QFT density matrix describing th…
The one dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) is one of the very few exactly soluble models of non-equilibrium statistical physics. It describes a system of particles which diffuse with hard core repulsion on a one dimensional lattice in contact with two reservoirs of particles at unequal densities. The goal of this note is to review the two main approaches which lead to the exact expression of the large deviation functional of the density of the SSEP in its steady state: a microscopic approach (based on the matrix product ansatz and an additivity property) and a macroscopic ap…
We calculate exactly the first cumulants of the integrated current and of the activity (which is the total number of changes of configurations) of the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) on a ring with periodic boundary conditions. Our results indicate that for large system sizes the large deviation functions of the current and of the activity take a universal scaling form, with the same scaling function for both quantities. This scaling function can be understood either by an analysis of Bethe ansatz equations or in terms of a theory based on fluctuating hydrodynamics or on the macrosco…
The dynamical structure factor of the Babujan-Takhtajan antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain is computed numerically at zero temperature and zero magnetic field, using the higher-spin generalization of an Algebraic Bethe Ansatz-based method previously used for spin-1/2 integrable chains. This method, which consists in the explicit construction of eigenstates and the summation of the Lehmann representation of the correlator, is here particularly challenging to implement in view of the presence of strongly deviated string solutions to the Bethe equations. We show that a careful treatment of these devi…
