This proceeding presents a new set of proton parton distribution functions, ATLASepWZVjet20, produced in an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading-order in QCD. The new datasets considered are the ATLAS measurements of $W^{\pm}$ and $Z$ boson production in association with jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV at the LHC with integrated luminosities of 20.2 fb$^{-1}$ and 19.9 fb$^{-1}$ respectively. The analysis also considers the ATLAS measurements of differential $W^{\pm}$ and $Z$ boson production at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb$^{-1}$ and deep-inelastic scattering data from $e^{\pm}p$ collisions at the HERA accelerator. An improved determination of the sea-quark densities at high Bjorken $x$ is shown, while confirming a strange-quark density of similar size as the up-and down-sea quark densities in the range $x\sim$ 0.02 found by previous ATLAS analyses.
The production of $W$/$Z$-bosons in association with jets is an important test of perturbative QCD predictions and also yields information about the parton distribution functions of the proton. We present fits to determine PDFs using inclusive $W$/$Z$-boson and $W$/$Z$+jets measurements from the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The ATLAS measurements are used in combination with deep-inelastic scattering data from HERA. An improved determination of the sea-quark densities at high Bjorken-$x$ is seen, while confirming a strange-quark density similar in size to the up- and down-sea-quark densities i…
By applying the Error PDF Updating Method, we analyze the impact of the absolute and normalized single differential cross-sections for top-quark pair production data from the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}= 8$ TeV, on the CT14HERA2 PDFs. We find that the top quark pair single differential distributions provide minor constraints on the CT14HERA2 gluon PDF when the nominal CT14HERA2 inclusive jet production data are included in the fit. Larger constraints on the gluon distribution are present when the jet data are removed (CT14HERA…
We present the interface between MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, a self-contained program that calculates cross sections up to next-to-leading order accuracy in an automated manner, and APPLgrid, a code that parametrises such cross sections in the form of look-up tables which can be used for the fast computations needed in the context of PDF fits. The main characteristic of this interface, which we dub aMCfast, is its being fully automated as well, which removes the need to extract manually the process-specific information for additional physics processes, as is the case with other matrix element calculato…
A precise knowledge of the quark and gluon structure of the proton, encoded by the parton distribution functions (PDFs), is of paramount importance for the interpretation of high-energy processes at present and future lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron colliders. Motivated by recent progress in the PDF determinations carried out by the CT, MSHT, and NNPDF groups, we present an updated combination of global PDF fits: PDF4LHC21. It is based on the Monte Carlo combination of the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF3.1 sets followed by either its Hessian reduction or its replica compression. Extensive benchmark s…
The HERAPDF1.0 PDF set, which was an NLO QCD analysis based on H1 and ZEUS combined inclusive cross section data from HERA-I, has been updated to HERAPDF1.5 by including preliminary inclusive cross section data from HERA-II running. Studies have also been made by adding various other HERA data sets: combined charm data, combined low energy run data and H1 and ZEUS jet data. These data give information on the treatment of charm and the charm quark mass and on the value of $α_s(M_Z)$. The PDF analysis has also been extended to NNLO. The PDFs give a good description of Tevatron and early LHC data…
Direct photon production in hadronic collisions provides a handle on the gluon PDF by means of the QCD Compton scattering process. In this work we revisit the impact of direct photon production on a global PDF analysis, motivated by the recent availability of the next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) calculation for this process. We demonstrate that the inclusion of NNLO QCD and leading-logarithmic electroweak corrections leads to a good quantitative agreement with the ATLAS measurements at 8 TeV and 13 TeV, except for the most forward rapidity region in the former case. By including the ATLAS 8 TeV …
Recent results on cross sections sensitive to the parton distribution functions (PDFs) within the proton from the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations are presented. The potential impact on the inclusion of these data in fits to the PDFs is discussed. Recent results from fits including the data from jet, or vector boson production from the ATLAS and CMS experiments are discussed.
We study the impact of recent LHC $t$-channel single top-quark and top-antiquark measurements at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. We consider, namely, total cross sections, top-antitop cross section ratios, and differential distributions. We present a critical appraisal of the data, studying in particular how their description is affected by the theoretical details that enter the computation of the corresponding observables: QCD and electroweak higher-order corrections, the flavour scheme, and the value of the bottom-quark th…
High-precision measurements of Standard Model processes provide information on different aspects contributing to the process, such as parton distribution functions, and comparisons with the current precision reached theoretically on the calculations of the cross sections of such processes. This document describes ATLAS measurements, performed at different centre-of-mass energies, of vector boson (W and Z) cross sections and cross-section ratios. It also discusses measurements of ratios of Z-boson and top-quark pair production cross sections, which provide important information on the proton PD…
We present an investigation of the theoretical uncertainties in parton distribution functions (PDFs) due to missing higher-order corrections in the perturbative predictions used in the fit, and their relationship to the uncertainties in subsequent predictions made using the PDFs. We consider in particular the standard approach of factorization and renormalization scale variation, and derive general results for the consistent application of these at the PDF fit stage. To do this, we use the fact that a PDF fit may be recast in a physical basis, where the PDFs themselves are bypassed entirely, a…
We investigate the impact of the high precision ATLAS and CMS 7 TeV measurements of inclusive jet production on the MMHT global PDF analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). This is made possible by the recent completion of the long-term project to calculate the NNLO corrections to the hard cross section. We find that a good description of the ATLAS data is not possible with the default treatment of experimental systematic errors, and develop a simplified solution that retains the dominant physical information of the data. We then investigate the fit quality and the impact on the gluon…
We have updated predictions for high energy neutrino and antineutrino charged current cross-sections within the conventional DGLAP formalism of NLO QCD using a modern PDF fit to HERA data, which also accounts in a systematic way for PDF uncertainties deriving from both model uncertainties and from the experimental uncertainties of the input data sets. Furthermore the PDFs are determined using an improved treatment of heavy quark thresholds. A measurement of the neutrino cross-section much below these predictions would signal the need for extension of the conventional formalism as in BFKL resum…
We present a detailed study of nuclear corrections in the deuteron (D) from an analysis of data from charged-lepton deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) off proton and D, as well as from dimuon pair production in pp and pD collisions and $W^\pm$ and the $Z$ boson production at pp (p$\rm \bar p$) colliders. In particular, we discuss the determination of the off-shell function describing the modification of parton distributions (PDF) in bound nucleons in the context of global PDF fits. Our results are consistent with the ones obtained earlier from the study of the ratios of DIS structure functions $F…
Measurements of the $W$ boson mass are planned by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, but for the time being, these may be unable to compete with the current world average precision of 15~MeV, due to uncertainties in the PDFs. We discuss the potential of a measurement by the LHCb experiment based on the charged lepton transverse momentum $p_T^{\ell}$ spectrum in $W \to μν$ decays. The unique forward acceptance of LHCb means that the PDF uncertainties would be anti-correlated with those of $p_T^{\ell}$ based measurements by ATLAS and CMS. We compute an average of ATLAS, CMS and LHCb measurements of …
We consider the role of the charm mass in PDF fits, and in particular the reliability of recent determinations of the MSbar running mass from fits to inclusive charm production data. We explain how the use of the pole mass, with a charm PDF determined empirically, can reduce PDF uncertainties from charm mass effects, and thereby lead to more reliable predictions for hard processes at the LHC.
This paper gives a summary of selected highlights discussed in the working group on "Structure Functions and Parton Densities" (WG1) at the DIS 2017 conference. From the many talks presented we extract some general themes discussed with respect to global PDF fits, new PDF-sensitive measurements from the LHC experiments and elsewhere, exploitation of new ideas, tools to perform PDF fits, PDFs of heavy nuclei, and finally progress in basic theory calculations.
Inclusive jet and dijet double-differential cross sections have been measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The cross sections were measured using jets clustered with the anti-kt algorithm. The measurements are performed in the jet rapidity range |y| < 4.4, covering jet transverse momenta from 20 GeV to 1.5 TeV and dijet invariant masses from 70 GeV to 5 TeV. The data are compared to expectations based on next-to-leading order QCD calculations corrected for non-perturbative effects, as well as to next-to-leading order Monte…
We investigate the parton distribution function (PDF) uncertainty in the measurement of the effective weak mixing angle $\sin^2θ_{\text{eff}}^{\ell}$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The PDF-induced uncertainty is large in the proton-proton collisions at the LHC due to the dilution effect. The measurement of the Drell-Yan forward-backward asymmetry ($A_{FB}$) at the LHC can be used to reduce the PDF uncertainty in the $\sin^2θ_{\text{eff}}^{\ell}$ measurement. However, when including the full mass range of lepton pairs in the $A_{FB}$ data analysis, the correlation between the PDF upda…

LHCb provides unique opportunities to study $W$ and $Z$ boson production at forward rapidities at the LHC. It has recently been suggested that a measurement of the $W$ boson mass by LHCb would complement measurements by ATLAS and CMS. All measurements of the $W$ mass at hadron colliders are subject to PDF uncertainties, but there would be a partial cancellation of the overall PDF uncertainty when the LHCb result is included in an average with measurements by ATLAS and CMS. Here we review measurements of $W$ and $Z$ boson production by LHCb, and report on a new study of the PDF uncertainty on t…
Differential cross sections of $t \overline{t}$ production have been measured by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Monte Carlo calculations provide an overall good modeling of all measured distributions, except for the transverse momentum of the top quark, for which all the generators at the next-to-leading order produce harder spectra. These measurements have been also included in the PDF fits, contributing to a sensible reduction of the gluon PDF uncertainty at large $x$.
We present the new CTEQ-TEA global analysis of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In this analysis, parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the nucleon are determined within the Hessian method at the next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD, based on the most recent measurements from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and a variety of world collider data. Because of difficulties in fitting both the ATLAS 7 and 8 TeV $W$ and $Z$ vector boson production cross section data, we present two families of PDFs, named CT18 and CT18$Z$ PDFs, respectively, without and with the ATLAS 7 TeV $W$ and…
We present a new software package designed to reduce the computational burden of hadron collider measurements in Parton Distribution Function (PDF) fits. The APFELgrid package converts interpolated weight tables provided by APPLgrid files into a more efficient format for PDF fitting by the combination with PDF and $α_s$ evolution factors provided by APFEL. This combination significantly reduces the number of operations required to perform the calculation of hadronic observables in PDF fits and simplifies the structure of the calculation into a readily optimised scalar product. We demonstrate t…

The production of single top-quarks in the t-channel at hadron colliders imposes strong analytic constraints on parton distribution functions (PDFs) through its double deeply inelastic scattering (DDIS) form. We exploit this to provide novel consistency checks between LO, NLO and NNLO PDF fits and propose to include it as a constraint in future PDF fits. Furthermore, while it is well-known that the b-quark PDF is highly sensitive to the b-quark mass, we show that the treatment of this systematic uncertainty is still incomplete, fragmented or outright missing at the moment. Consequently, we con…

The unique forward LHCb acceptance opens the possibility for performing precision Standard Model (SM) processes in a kinematical regime beyond the reach of both ATLAS and CMS experiments. In this article we discuss the feasibility of performing $W^{\pm}j$ measurements with 14 TeV LHCb data, and find that the leptonic asymmetry at high pseudorapidity, with appropriate cuts on the associated jet, can provide a factor of three reduction on the $d$ quark PDF uncertainty in a region of Bjorken $x > 0.5$.
Jet production at hadron colliders provides powerful constraints on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, in particular on the gluon PDF. Jet production can also be used to extract the QCD coupling constant and to test its running with the momentum transfer up to the TeV region. In this review, I summarize the information on PDFs and the strong coupling that has been provided by Run I LHC jet data. First of all, I discuss why jet production is directly sensitive to the gluon and quark PDFs at large-x, and then review the state-of-the-art perturbative calculations for jet prod…
We study the dependence of the transverse mass distribution of the charged lepton and the missing energies on the parton distributions (PDFs) adapted to the $W$ boson mass measurements at the CDF and ATLAS experiments. We compare the shape variations of the distribution induced by different PDFs and find that spread of predictions from different PDF sets can be much larger than the PDF uncertainty predicted by a specific PDF set. We suggest analyzing the experimental data using up-to-date PDFs for a better understanding of the PDF uncertainties in the $W$ boson mass measurements. We further ca…
Determinations of the proton's collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs) are emerging with growing precision due to increased experimental activity at facilities like the Large Hadron Collider. While this copious information is valuable, the speed at which it is released makes it difficult to quickly assess its impact on the PDFs, short of performing computationally expensive global fits. As an alternative, we explore new methods for quantifying the potential impact of experimental data on the extraction of proton PDFs. Our approach relies crucially on the Hessian correlation between theo…
We make use of recently released parton density functions (PDFs) with threshold-resummation improvement to consistently calculate theoretical predictions for neutralino and chargino pair production at next-to-leading order and next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The updated cross sections have been computed for experimentally relevant higgsino and gaugino search channels at the ongoing Run II of the LHC. A factorisation method is applied to exploit the smaller PDF uncertainty of the global PDF sets and to avoid complications arising in the refitting of threshold-resummation improved PDF repl…
We explore the sensitivity of W and Z boson production in hadronic collisions to uncertainties in parton distribution functions (PDFs) at large x arising from uncertainties in nuclear corrections when using deuterium data in global QCD fits. The W and Z differential cross sections show increasing influence of nuclear corrections at high boson rapidities, particularly for the d quark, which is diluted somewhat in the decay lepton rapidity distributions. The effects of PDF uncertainties on heavy W' and Z' bosons beyond the Standard Model become progressively more important for larger boson masse…
At large values of $x$ the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton are poorly constrained and there are considerable variations between different global fits. Data at such high $x$ have already been published by the ZEUS Collaboration, but not yet used in PDF extractions. A technique for comparing predictions based on different PDF sets to the observed number of events in the ZEUS data is presented. It is applied to compare predictions from the most commonly used PDFs to published ZEUS data at high Bjorken $x$. A wide variation is found in the ability of the PDFs to predict the obse…
Top-quark pair production at the LHC is directly sensitive to the gluon PDF at large x. While total cross-section data is already included in several PDF determinations, differential distributions are not, because the corresponding NNLO calculations have become available only recently. In this work we study the impact on the large-x gluon of top-quark pair differential distributions measured by ATLAS and CMS at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. Our analysis, performed in the NNPDF3.0 framework at NNLO accuracy, allows us to identify the optimal combination of LHC top-quark pair measurements that maximize the …
Since its start of data taking, the LHC has provided an impressive wealth of information on the quark and gluon structure of the proton. Indeed, modern global analyses of parton distribution functions (PDFs) include a wide range of LHC measurements of processes such as the production of jets, electroweak gauge bosons, and top quark pairs. In this work, we assess the ultimate constraining power of LHC data on the PDFs that can be expected from the complete dataset, in particular after the High-Luminosity (HL) phase, starting in around 2025. The huge statistics of the HL-LHC, delivering $\mathca…
Sytematic uncertainties to the single top production cross section measurement at the ATLAS experiment has been studied. Different sources of systematic uncertainties such as detector luminosity, jet energy calibration, SM background normalization, PDF parameterization and others have been considered. Large scale Monte-Carlo events simulation has been performed to estimate the contribution of each source in the overall uncertainty. The study was done for cut based analysis as well as for multivariate analysis of the single top measurements in ATLAS. The total systematic uncertainties of the si…
The accurate determination of the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) of the proton is an essential ingredient of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) program. PDF uncertainties impact a wide range of processes, from Higgs boson characterisation and precision Standard Model measurements to New Physics searches. A major recent development in modern PDF analyses has been to exploit the wealth of new information contained in precision measurements from the LHC Run I, as well as progress in tools and methods to include these data in PDF fits. In this report we summarise the information that PDF-sensit…
Previously published data on inclusive neutral and charged current e+p and e-p deep inelastic scattering from HERA have been combined. The new, model-independent method of combining the measured cross sections takes full account of correlated systematics in a coherent way, leading to significantly reduced uncertainties in the combined measurement across the (x, Q^2) plane. The combined cross section data have been used as the sole input for a new next-to-leading order QCD fit to extract the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. The PDFs extracted have greatly reduced experimental…
We present fits to determine Parton Distribution Functions using a diverse set of measurements from the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, including inclusive $W$ and $Z$ boson production, $t\bar{t}$ production, $W$+jets and $Z$+jets production, inclusive jet production and direct photon production. These ATLAS measurements are used in combination with deep-inelastic scattering data from the electron-proton collider HERA. Particular attention is paid to the correlation of systematic uncertainties within and between the various ATLAS data sets and to the impact of model, theoretical and parameterisat…

We present three new sets of next-to-leading order parton distribution functions (PDFs) determined by global fits to a wide variety of data for hard scattering processes. The analysis includes target mass and higher twist corrections needed for the description of deep inelastic scattering data at large x and low Q^2, and nuclear corrections for deuterium targets. The PDF sets correspond to three different models for the nuclear effects, and provide a more realistic uncertainty range for the d quark PDF, in particular, compared with previous fits. We describe the PDF error sets for each choice …
PDF fits in the HERAPDF1.0 formalism have been made to the combined HERA-I inclusive data and the newly combined $F_2$(charm) data from the H1 and ZEUS experiments. The charm data are found to be sensitive to the value of the charm mass and the choice of the heavy quark scheme. This has consequences for the predictions of $W$ and $Z$ cross sections at the LHC.
We discuss the impact of EW corrections on differential distributions in top-quark pair production at the LHC and future hadron colliders, focusing on the effects of initial-state photons. Performing a calculation at Next-to-Leading Order QCD+EW accuracy, we investigate in detail the impact of photon-initiated channels on central values as well as PDF and scale uncertainties, both at order $α_sα$ and $α_s^2α$. We present predictions at 13 and 100 TeV, and provide results for the 8 TeV differential measurements performed by ATLAS and CMS. A thorough comparison of results obtained with the NNPDF…
We show that measurements of the forward-backward charge asymmetry ($A_{FB}(M,y)$) of Drell-Yan dilepton events produced at hadron colliders provide a new powerful tool to constrain Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). PDF uncertainties are the dominant source of systematic error in precision measurements at hadron colliders (e.g. $χ^2$ values of fits to extract $\sin^2θ_{eff}^{lept}(M_Z)$ from $A_{FB}(M,y)$ with different PDF replicas can be used to place additional constraints on PDFs.In turn, using these constrained PDFs significantly reduces the PDF errors in precision measurements of ele…
We consider some trends, achievements and a series of remaining problems in the precision determination of parton distribution functions. For the description of the scaling violations of the deep-inelastic scattering data, forming the key ingredients to all PDF fits, a solid theoretical framework is of importance. It is provided by the fixed flavor number scheme in describing the heavy-quark contributions which is found in good agreement with the present experimental data in a very wide range of momentum transfers. In this framework also a consistent determination of the heavy-quark masses is …
The status of the global fits of nuclear parton distributions (nPDFs) is reviewed. In addition to comparing the contemporary analyses of nPDFs, difficulties and controversies posed by the neutrino-nucleus deeply inelastic scattering data is overviewed. At the end, the first dijet data from the LHC proton+lead collisions is briefly discussed.
The precision measurement of the W boson mass is an important milestone for the LHC physics program in the coming years. An accurate measurement of $M_W$ allows to perform stringent consistency tests of the Standard Model by means of global electroweak fits, which in turn are sensitive to New Physics at scales potentially higher than the ones explored in direct searches. From the theoretical point of view, our limited knowledge of PDFs will be one of the dominant sources of uncertainty in ongoing and future LHC determinations of $M_W$. In this whitepaper, we have quantified the impact of PDF u…
At LHCb, proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) can be studied in a unique phase space complementary to that accessible by ATLAS and CMS, corresponding to low and high values of Bjorken-$x$. The measurements of vector boson production in the forward region, with and without an associated jet, are presented. These measurements can be used to constrain the proton PDFs, and in particular, the production of a $Z$ boson in association with a $c$-jet can be studied to measure the intrinsic charm content of the proton.
Recent ATLAS data significantly extend the exclusion limits for supersymmetric particles. We examine the impact of such data on global fits of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) to indirect and cosmological data. We calculate the likelihood map of the ATLAS search, taking into account systematic errors on the signal and on the background. We validate our calculation against the ATLAS determinaton of 95% confidence level exclusion contours. A previous CMSSM global fit is then re-weighted by the likelihood map, which takes a bite at the high probability density region …
Parton distributions with QED corrections open new scenarios for high precision physics. We recall the need for accurate and improved predictions which keeps into account higher order QCD corrections together with electroweak effects. We study predictions obtained with the improved Born approximation and the $G_μ$ scheme by using two public codes: DYNNLO and HORACE. We focus our attention on the Drell-Yan Z-boson invariant mass distribution at low- and high-mass regions, recently measured by the ATLAS experiment and we estimate the impact of each component of the final prediction. We show that…
We respond to some criticism questioning the validity of the current Standard Model Higgs exclusion limits at the Tevatron, due to the significant dependence of the dominant production cross section from gluon-gluon fusion on the choice of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and the strong coupling (alpha_S). We demonstrate the ability of the Tevatron jet data to discriminate between different high-x gluon distributions, performing a detailed quantitative comparison to show that fits not explicitly including these data fail to give a good description. In this context we emphasise the importan…
