We present new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations towards a compact (230~au separation) triple protostar system, L1448 IRS3B, at 879~\micron with \contbeam~resolution. Spiral arm structure within the circum-multiple disk is well resolved in dust continuum toward IRS3B, and we detect the known wide (2300~au) companion, IRS3A, also resolving possible spiral substructure. Using dense gas tracers, C17O, H13CO$+$, and H13CN, we resolve the Keplerian rotation for both the circum-triple disk in IRS3B and the disk around IRS3A. Furthermore, we use the molecular line kinematic data and radiative transfer modeling of the molecular line emission to confirm that the disks are in Keplerian rotation with fitted masses of $1.19^{+0.13}_{-0.07}$ for IRS3B-ab, $1.51^{+0.06}_{-0.07}$~Msun for IRS3A, and place an upper limit on the central protostar mass for the tertiary IRS3B-c of 0.2~Msun. We measure the mass of the fragmenting disk of IRS3B to be 0.29~Msun from the dust continuum emission of the circum-multiple disk and estimate the mass of the clump surrounding IRS3B-c to be 0.07~Msun. We also find that the disk around IRS3A has a mass of 0.04~Msun. By analyzing the Toomre~Q parameter, we find the IRS3A circumstellar disk is gravitationally stable (Q$>$5), while the IRS3B disk is consistent with a gravitationally unstable disk (Q$<$1) between the radii 200-500~au. This coincides with the location of the spiral arms and the tertiary companion IRS3B-c, supporting the hypothesis that IRS3B-c was formed in situ via fragmentation of a gravitationally unstable disk.
We present key results from the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey (HOPS): spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and model fits of 330 young stellar objects, predominantly protostars, in the Orion molecular clouds. This is the largest sample of protostars studied in a single, nearby star-formation complex. With near-infrared photometry from 2MASS, mid- and far-infrared data from Spitzer and Herschel, and sub-millimeter photometry from APEX, our SEDs cover 1.2-870 $μ$m and sample the peak of the protostellar envelope emission at ~100 $μ$m. Using mid-IR spectral indices and bolometric temperatures, …
Protostellar jets have a fundamental role at the earliest evolution of protostars of all masses. In the case of low-mass (<8 Msun) protostars, strong observational evidence exists that the launching and collimation is due to the X- and/or disk-wind mechanisms. In these models, it is the protostar/disk system that creates all the necessary conditions to launch and collimate the jets near the protostar via strong magnetic fields. The origin of jets from more massive protostars has been investigated much less, in part because of the difficulty of resolving the collimation zone in these more dista…
Protostellar flares are rapid magnetic energy release events associated with formation of hot plasma in protostars. In the previous models of protostellar flares, the interaction between a protostellar magnetosphere with the surrounding disk plays crucial roles in building-up and releasing the magnetic energy. However, it remains unclear if protostars indeed have magnetospheres because vigorous disk accretion and strong disk magnetic fields in the protostellar phase may destroy the magnetosphere. Considering this possibility, we investigate the energy accumulation and release processes in the …
Emission from protostars at centimeter radio wavelengths has been shown to trace the free-free emission arising from ionizing shocks as a result of jets and outflows driven by protostars. Therefore, measuring properties of protostars at radio frequencies can provide valuable insights into the nature of their outflows and jets. We present a C-band (4.1 cm and 6.4 cm) survey of all known protostars (Class 0 and Class I) in Perseus as part of the VLA Nascent Disk and Multiplicity (VANDAM) Survey. We examine the known correlations between radio flux density and protostellar parameters such as bolo…
We study protostellar envelope and outflow evolution using Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS or WFC3 images of 304 protostars in the Orion Molecular clouds. These near-IR images resolve structures in the envelopes delineated by the scattered light of the central protostars with 80 AU resolution and they complement the 1.2-870 micron spectral energy distributions obtained with the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey program (HOPS). Based on their 1.60 micron morphologies, we classify the protostars into five categories: non-detections, point sources without nebulosity, bipolar cavity sources, unipolar …
Spherical hydrodynamic models with a polytropic equation of state (EoS) for forming protostars are revisited in order to investigate the so-called luminosity conundrum highlighted by observations. For a molecular cloud (MC) core with such an EoS with polytropic index $γ$ >1, the central mass accretion rate (MAR) decreases with increasing time as a protostar emerges, offering a sensible solution to this luminosity problem. As the MAR decreases, the protostellar luminosity also decreases, meaning that it is invalid to infer the star formation time from the currently observed luminosity using an …
Knowledge of protostellar evolution has been revolutionized with the advent of surveys at near-infrared to submillimeter wavelengths. This has enabled the bolometric luminosities and bolometric temperatures (traditional protostellar evolution diagnostics) to be measured for large numbers of protostars. However, further progress is difficult without knowing the masses of the central protostars. Protostar masses can be most accurately determined via molecular line kinematics from millimeter interferometers (i.e., ALMA). Theoretical investigations have predicted the protostellar mass function (PM…
We investigate the formation of protostellar clusters during the collapse of dense molecular cloud cores with a focus on the evolution of potential and kinetic energy, the degree of substructure, and the early phase of mass segregation. Our study is based on a series of hydrodynamic simulations of dense cores, where we vary the initial density profile and the initial turbulent velocity. In the three-dimensional adaptive mesh refinement simulations, we follow the dynamical formation of filaments and protostars until a star formation efficiency of 20%. Despite the different initial configuration…
The prevalence of substructures in $\sim1-10$ Myr old protoplanetary disks, which are often linked to planet formation, has raised the question of how early such features form, and as a corollary, how early planet formation begins. Here we present observations of seven protostellar disks (aged $\sim0.1-1$ Myr) from the VLA/ALMA Nascent Disk and Multiplicity Survey of Orion Protostars (VANDAM: Orion) that show clear substructures, thereby demonstrating that these features can form early in the lifetimes of disks. We use simple analytic models as well as detailed radiative transfer modeling to c…
Young protostellar discs provide the initial conditions for planet formation. The properties of these discs may be different from those of late-phase (T Tauri) discs due to continuing infall from the envelope and protostellar variability resulting from irregular gas accretion. We use a set of hydrodynamic simulations to determine the structure of discs forming in collapsing molecular clouds. We examine how radiative feedback from the host protostar affects the disc properties by examining three regimes: without radiative feedback, with continuous radiative feedback and with episodic feedback, …
We study the gravitational instability and fragmentation of primordial protostellar discs by using high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamics simulations. We follow the formation and evolution of spiral arms in protostellar discs, examine the dynamical stability, and identify a physical mechanism of secondary protostar formation. We use linear perturbation theory based on the spiral-arm instability (SAI) analysis in our previous studies. We improve the analysis by incorporating the effects of finite thickness and shearing motion of arms, and derive the physical conditions for SAI in protostell…
We conduct a census of the high-mass protostellar population of the $\sim70,000\:M_\odot$ Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) G028.37+00.07, identifying 35 sources based on their $70\:μ$m emission, as reported in the {\it Herschel} Hi-GAL catalog of Molinari et al. (2016). We perform aperture photometry to construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs), which are then fit with the massive protostar models of Zhang & Tan (2018). We find that the sources span a range of isotropic luminosities from $\sim$20 to 4,500$\:L_\odot$. The most luminous sources are predicted to have current protostellar masses of…
The latest developments in astrochemistry have shown how some molecular species can be used as a tool to study the early stages of the solar-type star formation process. Among them, the more relevant species are the interstellar complex organic molecules (iCOMs) and the deuterated molecules. Their analysis give us information on the present and past history of protostellar objects. Among the protostellar evolutionary stages, Class I protostars represent a perfect laboratory in which to study the initial conditions for the planet formation process. Indeed, from a physical point of view, the Cla…
We perform a sequence of 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the outflow-core interaction for a massive protostar forming via collapse of an initial cloud core of $60~{M_\odot}$. This allows us to characterize the properties of disk wind driven outflows from massive protostars, which can allow testing of different massive star formation theories. It also enables us to assess quantitatively the impact of outflow feedback on protostellar core morphology and overall star formation efficiency. We find that the opening angle of the flow increases with increasing protostellar mass, in agreem…

To study transportation of magnetic flux from large to small scales in protostellar sources, we analyzed the Nobeyama 45-m N2H+ (1-0), JCMT 850 um polarization, and ALMA C18O (2-1) and 1.3 mm and 0.8 mm (polarized) continuum data of the Class 0 protostar HH 211. The magnetic field strength in the dense core on a 0.1 pc scale was estimated with the single-dish line and polarization data using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, and that in the protostellar envelope on a 600 au scale was estimated from the force balance between the gravity and magnetic field tension by analyzing the gas kinema…
We characterize protostellar multiplicity in the Orion molecular clouds using ALMA 0.87~mm and VLA 9~mm continuum surveys toward 328 protostars. These observations are sensitive to projected spatial separations as small as $\sim$20~au, and we consider source separations up to 10$^4$~au as potential companions. The overall multiplicity fraction (MF) and companion fraction (CF) for the Orion protostars are 0.30$\pm$0.03 and 0.44$\pm$0.03, respectively, considering separations from 20 to 10$^4$~au. The MFs and CFs are corrected for potential contamination by unassociated young stars using a proba…
Velocity Structure of Circumstellar Environment around Class 0/I Protostars: Uncertainty in the Protostellar Mass Estimation Using Circumstellar Velocities
Binary and multiple star systems are a frequent outcome of the star formation process, and as a result, almost half of all sun-like stars have at least one companion star. Theoretical studies indicate that there are two main pathways that can operate concurrently to form binary/multiple star systems: large scale fragmentation of turbulent gas cores and filaments or smaller scale fragmentation of a massive protostellar disk due to gravitational instability. Observational evidence for turbulent fragmentation on scales of $>$1000~AU has recently emerged. Previous evidence for disk fragmentation w…
To assess the potential role of magnetic fields in regulating the envelope rotation and the fragmentation of Class 0 protostars, we carried out observations of the dust polarized emission at 0.87 mm with the SMA, in the envelopes of a large sample of 20 Class 0 protostars. We estimate the mean magnetic field orientation over the central 1000 au envelope scales and compared it to that of the protostellar outflow in order to study the relation between their misalignment and the kinematics of the circumstellar gas. We discover a strong relationship between the misalignment of the magnetic field o…
We present new Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of CO(2-1) outflows toward young, embedded protostars in the Perseus molecular cloud as part of the Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES) survey. For 57 Perseus protostars, we characterize the orientation of the outflow angles and compare them with the orientation of the local filaments as derived from $Herschel$ observations. We find that the relative angles between outflows and filaments are inconsistent with purely parallel or purely perpendicular distributions. Instead, the observed distribution of o…
Using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics simulations, the driving of protostellar jets is investigated in different star-forming cores with the parameters of magnetic field strength and mass accretion rate. Powerful high-velocity jets appear in strongly magnetized clouds when the mass accretion rate onto the protostellar system is lower than $\dot{M} \lesssim 10^{-3}\,{\rm M}_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. On the other hand, even at this mass accretion rate range, no jets appear for magnetic fields of prestellar clouds as weak as $μ_0 \gtrsim 5$--$10$, where $μ_0$ is the mass-to-flux ratio normalized b…
We have imaged 15 molecular-line emissions and the dust continuum emission around the Class 0 protostellar source, IRAS 15398-3359, with ALMA. The outflow structure is mainly traced by the H2CO (K_a=0 and 1), CCH, and CS emissions. These lines also trace the disk/envelope structure around the protostar. The H2CO (K_a=2 and 3), CH3OH, and SO emissions are concentrated toward the protostar, while the DCN emission is more extended around the protostar. We have performed the principal component analysis (PCA) for these distributions on the two different scales, the outflow and the disk/envelope st…
The role of the magnetic field during protostellar collapse is poorly constrained from an observational point of view, although it could be significant if we believe state-of-the-art models of protostellar formation. We present polarimetric observations of the 233 GHz thermal dust continuum emission obtained with ALMA in the B335 Class 0 protostar. Linearly polarized dust emission arising from the circumstellar material in the envelope of B335 is detected at all scales probed by our observations, from radii of 50 to 1000 au. The magnetic field structure producing the dust polarization has a ve…
We have observed the CCH (N=3-2, J=7/2-5/2, F=4-3 and 3-2) and SO (6_7-5_6) emission at a 0"2 angular resolution toward the low-mass Class 0 protostellar source IRAS 15398-3359 with ALMA. The CCH emission traces the infalling-rotating envelope near the protostar with the outflow cavity extended along the northeast-southwest axis. On the other hand, the SO emission has a compact distribution around the protostar. The CCH emission is relatively weak at the continuum peak position, while the SO emission has a sharp peak there. Although the maximum velocity shift of the CCH emission is about 1 km …
We have observed the Class I protostellar source Elias 29 with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We have detected CS, SO, $^{34}$SO, SO$_2$, and SiO line emissions in a compact component concentrated near the protostar and a ridge component separated from the protostar by 4\arcsec\ ($\sim 500$ au). The former component is found to be abundant in SO and SO$_2$ but deficient in CS. The abundance ratio SO/CS is as high as $3^{+13}_{-2} \times 10^2$ at the protostar, which is even higher than that in the outflow-shocked region of L1157 B1. However, organic molecules (HCOOCH$_3$,…

In the standard picture for low-mass star formation, a dense molecular cloud undergoes gravitational collapse to form a protostellar system consisting of a new central star, a circumstellar disk, and a surrounding envelope of remaining material. The mass distribution of the system evolves as matter accretes from the large-scale envelope through the disk and onto the protostar. While this general picture is supported by simulations and indirect observational measurements, the specific timescales related to disk growth and envelope dissipation remain poorly constrained. In this paper we conduct …
Recent observations of young stellar systems with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) are helping to cement the idea that close companion stars form via fragmentation of a gravitationally unstable disk around a protostar early in the star formation process. As the disk grows in mass, it eventually becomes gravitationally unstable and fragments, forming one or more new protostars in orbit with the first at mean separations of 100 astronomical units (AU) or even less. Here we report direct numerical calculations down to scales as …
The formation pathways of different types of organic molecules in protostellar envelopes and other regions of star formation are subjects of intense current interest. We here present observations of C$_4$H and CH$_3$OH, tracing two distinct groups of interstellar organic molecules, toward 16 protostars in the Ophiuchus and Corona Australis molecular clouds. Together with observations in the literature, we present C$_4$H and CH$_3$OH data from single-dish observations of 40 embedded protostars. We find no correlation between the C$_4$H and CH$_3$OH column densities in this large sample. Based o…
We present ALMA (0.87~mm) and VLA (9~mm) observations toward OMC2-FIR4 and OMC2-FIR3 within the Orion integral-shaped filament that are thought to be the nearest regions of intermediate mass star formation. We characterize the continuum sources within these regions on $\sim$40~AU (0\farcs1) scales and associated molecular line emission at a factor of $\sim$30 better resolution than previous observations at similar wavelengths. We identify six compact continuum sources within OMC2-FIR4, four in OMC2-FIR3, and one additional source just outside OMC2-FIR4. This continuum emission is tracing the i…
We present $\sim10-40\,μ$m SOFIA-FORCAST images of 11 isolated protostars as part of the SOFIA Massive (SOMA) Star Formation Survey, with this morphological classification based on 37 $μ$m imaging. We develop an automated method to define source aperture size using the gradient of its background-subtracted enclosed flux and apply this to build spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We fit the SEDs with radiative transfer models, developed within the framework of turbulent core accretion (TCA) theory, to estimate key protostellar properties. Here, we release the sedcreator python package that ca…
We study low-metallicity star formation with a set of high-resolution hydrodynamics simulations for various gas metallicities over a wide range $0$--$10^{-3} \ {\rm Z}_{\bigodot}$. Our simulations follow non-equilibrium chemistry and radiative cooling by adopting realistic elemental abundance and dust size distribution. We examine the condition for the fragmentation of collapsing clouds (cloud fragmentation; CF) and of accretion discs (disc fragmentation; DF). We find that CF is suppressed due to rapid gas heating accompanied with molecular hydrogen formation even with efficient dust cooling f…
Chemical diversity of low-mass protostellar sources has so far been recognized, and environmental effects are invoked as its origin. In this context, observations of isolated protostellar sources without influences of nearby objects are of particular importance. Here, we report chemical and physical structures of the low-mass Class 0 protostellar source IRAS 16544$-$1604 in the Bok globule CB68, based on 1.3 mm ALMA observations at a spatial resolution of $\sim$70~au that were conducted as part of the large program FAUST. Three interstellar saturated complex organic molecules (iCOMs), CH$_3$OH…
The evolution of protostellar outflows is investigated under different mass accretion rates in the range $\sim10^{-5}-10^{-2} {\rm M}_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ with three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations. A powerful outflow always appears in strongly magnetized clouds with $B_0 \gtrsim B_{\rm 0, cr}$ $=10^{-4} (M_{\rm cl}/100 {\rm M}_\odot){\rm G}$, where $M_{\rm cl}$ is the cloud mass. When a cloud has a weaker magnetic field, the outflow does not evolve promptly with a high mass accretion rate. In some cases with moderate magnetic fields $B_0$ slightly smaller than $B_{\rm 0,cr}$, the outf…
The Cygnus-X star-forming complex is one of the most active regions of low and high mass star formation within 2 kpc of the Sun. Using mid-infrared photometry from the IRAC and MIPS Spitzer Cygnus-X Legacy Survey, we have identified over 1800 protostar candidates. We compare the protostellar luminosity functions of two regions within Cygnus-X: CygX-South and CygX-North. These two clouds show distinctly different morphologies suggestive of dissimilar star-forming environments. We find the luminosity functions of these two regions are statistically different. Furthermore, we compare the luminosi…
We have conducted a survey of 328 protostars in the Orion molecular clouds with ALMA at 0.87 mm at a resolution of $\sim$0.1" (40 au), including observations with the VLA at 9 mm toward 148 protostars at a resolution of $\sim$0.08" (32 au). This is the largest multi-wavelength survey of protostars at this resolution by an order of magnitude. We use the dust continuum emission at 0.87 mm and 9 mm to measure the dust disk radii and masses toward the Class 0, Class I, and Flat Spectrum protostars, characterizing the evolution of these disk properties in the protostellar phase. The mean dust disk …
We construct a model for cosmic ray acceleration from protostellar accretion shocks and calculate the resulting cosmic ray ionization rate within star-forming molecular clouds. We couple a protostar cluster model with an analytic accretion shock model to calculate the cosmic ray acceleration from protostellar surfaces. We present the cosmic ray flux spectrum from keV to GeV energies for a typical low-mass protostar. We find that at the shock surface the spectrum follows a power-law trend across 6 orders of magnitude in energy. After attenuation, the spectrum at high energies steepens, while at…
We used ALMA to observe the star-forming region GGD27 at 1.14 mm with an unprecedented angular resolution, 40 mas (56 au) and sensitivity (0.002 Msun). We detected a cluster of 25 continuum sources, most of which are likely tracing disks around Class 0/I protostars. Excluding the two most massive objects, disks masses are in the range 0.003-0.05 Msun. The analysis of the cluster properties indicates that GGD27 displays moderate subclustering. This result combined with the dynamical timescale of the radio jet (10000 years) suggests the youthfulness of the cluster. The lack of disk mass segregat…
The majority of the ultimate main-sequence mass of a star is assembled in the protostellar phase, where a forming star is embedded in an infalling envelope and encircled by a protoplanetary disk. Studying mass accretion in protostars is thus a key to understanding how stars gain their mass and ultimately how their disks and planets form and evolve. At this early stage, the dense envelope reprocesses most of the luminosity generated by accretion to far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths. Time-domain photometry at these wavelengths is needed to probe the physics of accretion onto protostars,…
Context: Understanding how accretion proceeds is a key question of star formation, with important implications for both the physical and chemical evolution of young stellar objects. In particular, very little is known about the accretion variability in the earliest stages of star formation. Aims: To characterise protostellar accretion histories towards individual sources by utilising sublimation and freeze-out chemistry of CO. Methods: A sample of 24 embedded protostars are observed with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) in context of the large program "Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their E…
The extremely young Class 0 object B1b-S and the first hydrostatic core (FSHC) candidate, B1b-N, provide a unique opportunity to study the chemical changes produced in the elusive transition from the prestellar core to the protostellar phase. We present 40"x70" images of Barnard 1b in the 13CO 1->0, C18O 1->0, NH2D 1_{1,1}a->1_{0,1}s, and SO 3_2->2_1 lines obtained with the NOEMA interferometer. The observed chemical segregation allows us to unveil the physical structure of this young protostellar system down to scales of ~500au. The two protostellar objects are embedded in an elongated conden…
We perform two-dimensional axially symmetric radiation-hydrodynamic simulations to assess the impact of outflows and radiative force feedback from massive protostars by varying when the protostellar outflow starts, the ratio of ejection to accretion rates, and the strength of the wide angle disk wind component. The star formation efficiency, i.e. the ratio of final stellar mass to initial core mass, is dominated by radiative forces and the ratio of outflow to accretion rates. Increasing this ratio has three effects: First, the protostar grows slower with a lower luminosity at any given time, l…
We have observed the Class 0 protostellar source IRAS 16293-2422 A in the C17O and H2CS lines as well as the 1.3 mm dust continuum with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at an angular resolution of ~0."1 (14 au). The continuum emission of the binary component, Source A, reveals the substructure consisting of 5 intensity peaks within 100 au from the protostar. The C17O emission mainly traces the circummultiple structure on a 300 au scale centered at the intensity centroid of the continuum, while it is very weak within the radius of 50 au from the centroid. The H2CS emission, in c…
Class I protostars in three high-mass star-forming regions are found to have correlations among the local projected density of other Class I protostars, the summed flux from these other protostars, and the protostellar luminosity in the WISE 22 micron band. Brighter Class I sources form in higher-density and higher-flux regions, while low luminosity sources form anywhere. These correlations depend slightly on the number of neighbors considered (from 2 to 20) and could include a size-of-sample effect from the initial mass function (i.e., larger numbers include rarer and more massive stars). Lum…
Protostellar disks in their natural habitat -- the formation of protostars and their accretion disks in the turbulent and magnetized interstellar medium
