Less common ligand coordination of transition-metal centers is often associated with peculiar valence-shell electron configurations and outstanding physical properties. One example is the Fe$^+$ ion with linear coordination, actively investigated in the research area of single-molecule magnetism. Here we address the nature of 3$d^9$ states for Cu$^{2+}$ ions sitting in the center of trigonal bipyramidal ligand cages in the quasi-two-dimensional honeycomb compound InCu$_{2/3}$V$_{1/3}$O$_3$, whose unusual magnetic properties were intensively studied in the recent past. In particular, we discuss the interplay of structural effects, electron correlations, and spin-orbit couplings in this material. A relevant computational finding is a different sequence of the Cu ($xz$, $yz$) and ($xy$, $x^2\!-\!y^2$) levels as compared to existing electronic-structure models, which has implications for the interpretation of various excitation spectra. Spin-orbit interactions, both first- and second-order, turn out to be stronger than previously assumed, suggesting that rather rich single-ion magnetic properties can be in principle achieved also for the 3$d^9$ configuration by properly adjusting the sequence of crystal-field states for such less usual ligand coordination.
High field electron spin resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetization studies addressing the ground state of the quasi two-dimensional spin-1/2 honeycomb lattice compound InCu{2/3}V{1/3}O{3} are reported. Uncorrelated finite size structural domains occurring in the honeycomb planes are expected to inhibit long range magnetic order. Surprisingly, ESR data reveal the development of two collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) sublattices below ~ 20 K whereas NMR results show the presence of the staggered internal field. Magnetization data evidence a spin reorientation transition at ~ 5.7 T. …
We have studied the structural, magnetic properties, and electronic structure of the compound InCuPO5 synthesized by solid state reaction method. The structure of InCuPO5 comprises of S = 1/2 uniform spin chains formed by corner-shared CuO4 units. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data shows a broad maximum at about 65 K, a characteristic feature of one-dimensional (1D) magnetism. The chi(T) data is fitted to the coupled, S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAFM) uniform chain model that gives the intra-chain coupling (J/kB) between nearest neighbour Cu2+ ions as -100 K and the ratio of inter-c…
We find that the sheet resistance ($R_s$) of patterned samples of ${\rm LaAlO_3}/{\rm SrTiO_3}$ with a length scale of several microns may increase significantly at low temperatures in connection with driving electrical currents and applying in-plane magnetic fields. As the samples are warmed up, $R_s$ recovers to its original value with accelerated recovery near ${\rm 70 \ K}$ and ${\rm 160 \ K}$. Concomitantly with the increase in $R_s$, the carrier density and the mobility decrease and magnetotransport properties which may be linked to magnetism are suppressed.
We have performed Raman scattering investigations on the high energy magnetic excitations in a BiFeO$_3$ single crystal as a function of both temperature and laser excitation energy. A strong feature observed at 1250 cm$^{-1}$ in the Raman spectra has been previously assigned to two phonon overtone. We show here that its unusual frequency shift with the excitation energy and its asymmetric temperature dependent Fano lineshape reveal a strong coupling to magnetic excitations. In the same energy range, we have also identified the two-magnon excitation with a temperature dependence very similar t…
The order parameters of the magnetic, charge and structural orders at half-doped manganites are identified. A corresponding Landau theory of the phase transitions is formulated. Many structural and thermodynamical behaviors are accounted for and clarified within the framework. In particular, the theory provides a unified picture for the scenario of the phase transitions and their nature with respect to the variation of the tolerance factor of the manganites. It also accounts for the origin of the incommensurate nature of the orbital order and its subsequently accompanying antiferromagnetic ord…
We present anisotropic transport and optical spectroscopy studies on EuCd_2As_2. The measurements reveal that EuCd_2As_2 is a low carrier density semimetal with moderate anisotropic resistivity ratio. The charge carriers experience very strong scattering from Eu magnetic moments, resulting in a Kondo-like increase of resistivity at low temperature. Below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature at $T_N$= 9.5 K, the resistivity drops sharply due to the reduced scattering from the ordered Eu moments. Nevertheless, the anisotropic ratio of $ρ_c/ρ_{ab}$ keeps increasing, suggesting that the an…
We present a comparative study of CoO2 layers in the Bi-misfit and NaxCoO2 cobaltates. Co NMR measures the intrinsic susceptibility of the Co layers and is not affected by spurious contributions. At low dopings where room-temperature thermopower (TEP) is large, Curie-Weiss susceptibilities are observed in both materials. But NMR and muSR experiments find neither charge nor spin order down to low temperatures in Bi-misfit, in contrast to the case of NaxCoO2. This demonstrates that metallicity, charge and magnetic orders are specific of the Na layers in NaxCoO2 whereas strong correlations are ge…
We report the results of magnetic measurements for the solid solution Ce$_2$Au$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si$_3$. The results reveal that this solid solution is characterized by a magnetic phase diagram (plot of magnetic transition temperature versus $x$) unusual for Kondo lattices. In particular, the spin-glass freezing induced by disorder is observed only for the compositions at the weak coupling limit; as one approaches the quantum critical point by a gradual replacement of Au by Co, this disorder effect is surprisingly suppressed in favor of long range antiferro-magnetic ordering in contrast to expectat…
Van der Waals magnet VI$_3$ demonstrates intriguing magnetic properties that render it great for use in various applications. However, its microscopic magnetic structure has not been determined yet. Here, we report neutron diffraction and susceptibility measurements in VI$_3$ that revealed a ferromagnetic order with the moment direction tilted from the $c$-axis by ~36° at 4 K. A spin reorientation accompanied by a structure distortion within the honeycomb plane is observed at a temperature of ~27 K, before the magnetic order completely disappears at $T_C$ = 50 K. The refined magnetic moment of…
We theoretically study the joint influence of uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, symmetric exchange anisotropy (with its axis parallel to the DM vector) and arbitrarily oriented magnetic fields on one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnets. We show that the zero-temperature phase diagram contains three competing phases: (i) an antiferromagnet with Neel vector in the plane spanned by the DM vector and the magnetic field, (ii) a {\em dimerized} antiferromagnet with Neel vector perpendicular to both the DM vector and the magnetic field, and (iii) a gapless Luttinger liquid. Phase (i)…
We study the interplay between disorder and a quasi periodic coupling array in an external magnetic field in a spin-1/2 XXZ chain. A simple real space decimation argument is used to estimate the magnetization values where plateaux show up. The latter are in good agreement with exact diagonalization results on fairly long XX chains. Spontaneous susceptibility properties are also studied, finding a logarithmic behaviour similar to the homogeneously disordered case.
Magnetic anisotropy is crucially important for the stabilization of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism, which is rare in nature but highly desirable in spintronics and for advancing fundamental knowledge. Recent works on CrI$_3$ and CrGeTe$_3$ monolayers not only led to observations of the long-time-sought 2D ferromagnetism, but also revealed distinct magnetic anisotropy in the two systems, namely Ising behavior for CrI$_3$ versus Heisenberg behavior for CrGeTe$_3$. Such magnetic difference strongly contrasts with structural and electronic similarities of these two materials, and understanding it …
The effects of the spin and lattice degrees of freedom on the electronic structure of M1 vanadium dioxide are explored using a quasiparticle description. Contraction of the inter-vanadium spacing of the Peierls pairings stabilizes bonding electrons, reducing polarizability and thus widening the band gap. Increases of this inter-vanadium spacing of as little as 1 \% reduce this stabilization, resulting in a crossover to ferromagnetic behaviour accomplished by half of the valence electrons inhabiting the leading edge of the conduction band in localized atomic-like orbitals, as the antiferromagne…
The magnetic properties of iron pnictide superconductors with magnetic rare-earth ions under strong magnetic field are investigated based on the cluster self-consistent field method. Starting from an effective Heisenberg model, we present the evolution of magnetic structures on magnetic field in RFeAsO (R=Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Tb) and RFe2As2 (R=Eu) compounds. It is found that spin-flop transition occurs in both rare-earth and iron layers under magnetic field, in good agreement with the experimental results. The interplay between rare-earth and iron spins plays a key role in the magnetic-fiel…
We report a combined $^{115}$In NQR, $^{51}$V NMR and $μ$SR spectroscopic study of the low-temperature magnetic properties of InCu$_{2/3}$V$_{1/3}$O$_3$, a quasi-two dimensional (2D) compound comprising in the spin sector a honeycomb lattice of antiferromagnetically coupled spins $S=1/2$ associated with Cu$^{2+}$ ions. Despite substantial experimental and theoretical efforts, the ground state of this material was has not been ultimately identified. In particular, two characteristic temperatures of about $\sim 40$ K and $\sim 20$ K manifesting themselves as anomalies in different magnetic measu…
We investigate the magnetic instabilities of the two-dimensional model of interacting e_g electrons for hole doping away from two electrons per site in the mean-field approximation. In particular, we address the occurrence of orbitally polarized states due to the inequivalent orbitals, and their interplay with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin order. The role played by the Hund's exchange coupling J_H and by the crystal field orbital splitting E_z in stabilizing one of the competing phases is discussed in detail.
The chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals C21H19CuF12N4O6 were studied using the x-ray diffraction and ab initio band structure calculations. We show that the crystal structure modification at T=146 K, associated with the spin crossover transition, induces the changes of the orbital order in half of the Cu sites. This in turn results in the switch of the magnetic interaction sign in accordance with the Goodenough-Kanamori-Andersen theory of the coupling between the orbital and spin degrees of freedom.
We report the synthesis and characterization of a new quantum magnet [2-[Bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)aminomethyl]pyridine]Ni(II)-trimer (BHAP-Ni3) in single-crystalline form. Our combined experimental and theoretical investigations reveal an exotic spin state that stabilizes a robust 2/3 magnetization plateau between 7 and 20 T in an external magnetic field. AC-susceptibility measurements show the absence of any magnetic order/glassy state down to 60 mK. The magnetic ground state is disordered and specific-heat measurements reveal the gapped nature of the spin excitations. Most interestingly, our theo…
We investigate the magnetic field dependent thermopower, thermal conductivity, resistivity and Hall effect in the heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2. In contrast to reports on thermodynamic measurements, we find in total three transitions at high fields, rather than a single one at 10 T. Using the Mott formula together with renormalized band calculations, we identify Lifshitz transitions as their origin. The predictions of the calculations show that all experimental results rely on an interplay of a smooth suppression of the Kondo effect and the spin splitting of the flat hybridized bands.
We report the magnetic, thermal, magnetocaloric and transport properties of polycrystalline NdCuSi. The compound shows a weak antiferromagnetic ordering, as confirmed by different measurements. Arrott plots indicate that the magnetic phase transition is found to be second order in nature. The isothermal magnetic entropy change calculated using the magnetization data gives a value of 11.1 J/kg K for a field change of 50 kOe. The follows h2/3 dependence (h is the reduced field) with a negative intercept, which is predicted by mean field theory for second order phase transitions. Landau theory of…
The transport properties of a magnetic two dimensional electron gas consisting of a modulation doped n type HgMnTe/HgCdTe quantum well, QW, have been investigated. By analyzing the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and the node positions of their beating patterns, we have been able to separate the gate voltage dependent Rashba spin-orbit splitting from the temperature dependent giant Zeeman splitting. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the Rashba spin-orbit splitting is larger than or comparable to the $sp-d$ exchange interaction induced giant Zeeman splitting in this magnetic 2DEG even…
Spin waves (SW) can induce rich domain wall (DW) motion in a perpendicular-magnetic anisotropy nanostrip. In-plane magnetization tilt angle resulting from the fluctuation of the effective field of the magnetization response in the DW region plays an essential role in the dynamics of SW interacting with a DW. We performed simulation and found that the transmission ratio of the propagating SW across the DW depends strongly on the tilt angle in the low-frequency regime. The material parameters and the geometrical configuration can be fine-tuned for practical devices.
We study the Hubbard model on a square lattice, using the dynamical vertex approximation and the parquet approximation. These methods allow us to describe the mutual interference of spin-fluctuations in the particle-hole channel and superconducting fluctuations in the cooperon channel in an unbiased way. For small dopings we find predominant commensurable antiferromagnetic spin- and d-wave superconducting fluctuations; for larger doping incommensurate antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are concomitant to triplet s-wave superconducting fluctuations.
The interplay between the structural and magnetic phase transitions occurring in the Fe-based pnictide superconductors is studied within a Ginzburg-Landau approach. We show that the magnetoelastic coupling between the corresponding order parameters is behind the salient features observed in the phase diagram of these systems. This naturally explains the coincidence of transition temperatures observed in some cases as well as the character (first or second-order) of the transitions. We also show that magnetoelastic coupling is the key ingredient determining the collinearity of the magnetic orde…
We investigated the evolution of the temperature-composition phase diagram of Fe$_{1+y}$Te upon Se substitution. In particular, the effect of Se substitution on the two-step, coupled magneto-structural transition in Fe$_{1+y}$Te single crystals is investigated. To this end, the nominal Fe excess was kept at $y$ = 0.12. For low Se concentrations, the two magneto-structural transitions displayed a tendency to merge. In spite of the high Fe-content, superconductivity emerges for Se concentrations, $x \geq$ 0.1. We present a temperature-composition phase diagram to demonstrate the interplay of str…
Including the orbital off-diagonal spin and charge condensates in the self consistent determination of magnetic order within a realistic three-orbital model for the $4d^4$ compound $\rm Ca_2 Ru O_4$, reveals a host of novel features including strong and anisotropic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) renormalization, coupling of strong orbital magnetic moments to orbital fields, and a magnetic reorientation transition. Highlighting the rich interplay between orbital geometry and overlap, spin-orbit coupling, Coulomb interactions, tetragonal distortion, and staggered octahedral tilting and rotation, our …
New mechanism of magnetoresistivity in itinerant metamagnets with a structural disorder is introduced basing on analysis of experimental results on magnetoresistivity, susceptibility, and magnetization of structurally disordered alloys (Y$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$)Co$_{2}$. In this series, YCo$_{2}$ is an enhanced Pauli paramagnet, whereas GdCo$_{2}$ is a ferrimagnet (T$_{\rm c}$=400 K) with Gd sublattice coupled antiferromagnetically to the itinerant Co-3d electrons. The alloys are paramagnetic for $x < 0.12$. Large positive magnetoresistivity has been observed in the alloys with magnetic ground state …
The electronic and magnetic properties of Ba$_5$AlIr$_2$O$_{11}$ containing Ir-Ir dimers are investigated using the GGA and GGA+SOC calculations. We found that strong suppression of the magnetic moment in this compound recently found in [J. Terzic {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 91}, 235147 (2015)] is not due to charge-ordering, but is related to the joint effect of the spin-orbit interaction and strong covalency, resulting in the formation of metal-metal bonds. They conspire and act against the intra-atomic Hund's rule exchange interaction to reduce total magnetic moment of the dimer. We argu…
Motivated by the iron-based superconductors, we develop a self-consistent electronic theory for the itinerant spin excitations in the regime of coexistence of the antiferromagnetic stripe order with wavevector ${\bf Q}_{1} = (π,0)$ and $s^{+-}$ superconductivity. The onset of superconductivity leads to the appearance of a {\em magnetic} resonance near the wavevector ${\bf Q}_{2} = (0,π)$ where magnetic order is absent. This resonance is isotropic in spin space, unlike the excitations near ${\bf Q}_{1}$ where the magnetic Goldstone mode resides. We discuss several features which can be observed…
We study the magnetic field effects on the diluted spin-ice materials using the replica-exchange Monte Carlo simulation. We observe five plateaus in the magnetization curve of the diluted nearest-neighbor spin-ice model on the pyrochlore lattice when a magnetic field is applied in the [111] direction. This is in contrast to the case of the pure model with two plateaus. The origin of five plateaus is investigated from the spin configuration of two corner-sharing tetrahedra in the case of the diluted model.
We study the uniform time reversal invariant $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid (QSL) with low energy fermionic quasi-particles for rare earth pyrochlore magnets and explore its magnetic instability employing an augmented fermionic parton mean field theory approach. Self consistent calculations stabilise an uniform $U(1)$ QSL with both gapped and gapless parton excitations as well as fractionalised magnetically ordered phases in an experimentally relevant part of the phase diagram near the classical phase boundaries of the magnetically ordered phases. The gapped QSL has a band-structure with a non-zer…
The ground state properties of CeCoPO, a homologue of the new high temperature superconductors RFePnO1-xFx, were studied by means of susceptibility, specific heat, and resistivity measurements on polycrystals. The observation of a well defined Curie-Weiss behavior above 230K with mu_eff=2.9mu_B and a ferromagnetic ordering below T_C=75K is similar to what was observed in LaCoPO and points to magnetism of the Co-3d electrons. However, the Ce-ions are on the border to magnetism with a Kondo scale of T_K~40K and show an enhanced Sommerfeld-coefficient of γ~200mJ/molK^2.
We analyze the magnetic and transport properties of a double quantum dot coupled to superconducting leads. In addition to the possible phase transition to a $π$ state, already present in the single dot case, this system exhibits a richer magnetic behavior due to the competition between Kondo and inter-dot antiferromagnetic coupling. We obtain results for the Josephson current which may help to understand recent experiments on superconductor-metallofullerene dimer junctions. We show that in such a system the Josephson effect can be used to control its magnetic configuration.
In the organic charge transfer salt k-(BETS)2Mn[N(CN)2]3 the metallic conductivity is provided by itinerant pi-electrons in the layers of BETS molecules, whereas magnetization is largely dominated by the localized d-electrons of the Mn2+ ions in the insulating anionic layers. We study magnetic properties of the compound in its low-temperature, Mott-insulating state by means of magnetic torque technique. The complex behavior of the torque can be qualitatively explained by the coexistence of two weakly interacting magnetic subsystems associated with paramagnetic d-electron spins and antiferromag…
We derive a realistic microscopic model for doped colossal magnetoresistance manganites, which includes the dynamics of charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom on a quantum mechanical level. The model respects the SU(2) spin symmetry and the full multiplet structure of the manganese ions within the cubic lattice. Concentrating on the hole doped domain ($0\le x\le 0.5$) we study the influence of the electron-lattice interaction on spin and orbital correlations by means of exact diagonalisation techniques. We find that the lattice can cause a considerable suppression of the coupling…
Conventional Paramagnetism - a state with finite magnetic moment per ion sans long range magnetic ordering, but with lowering temperature the moment on each ion picks up a particular direction, breaking rotational symmetry, and results into long range magnetic ordering. However, in systems with competing multiple degrees of freedom this conventional notion may easily breaks and results into short range correlation much above the global magnetic transition temperature. La2CuIrO6 with complex interplay of spins (s =1/2) on Cu site and pseudo-spin (j =1/2) on Ir site owing to strong spin-orbit co…
Investigations of magnetically ordered phases on the femtosecond timescale have provided significant insights into the influence of charge and lattice degrees of freedom on the magnetic sub-system. However, short-range magnetic correlations occurring in the absence of long-range order, for example in spin-frustrated systems, are inaccessible to many ultrafast techniques. Here, we show how time-resolved resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (trRIXS) is capable of probing such short-ranged magnetic dynamics in a charge-transfer insulator through the detection of a Zhang-Rice singlet exciton. Utili…
We employ the Gutzwiller variational approach to investigate the interplay of Coulomb interaction and spin-orbit coupling in a three-orbital Hubbard model. Already in the paramagnetic phase we find a substantial renormalization of the spin-orbit coupling that enters the effective single-particle Hamiltonian for the quasi-particles. Only close to half band-filling and for sizable Coulomb interaction we observe clear signatures of Hund's atomic rules for spin, orbital, and total angular momentum. For a finite local Hund's-rule exchange interaction we find a ferromagnetically ordered state. The s…
The Hubbard model has been employed successfully to understand many aspects of correlation driven physical properties, in particular, the magnetic order in itenerant electron systems. In some systems such as Heusler alloys, manganites etc., it is known that, in addition to magnetic order, distortion induced by Jahn-Teller(J-T) effect also exists. In this paper, based on two-fold degenerate Hubbard model, the influence of magnetic order on J-T distortion is investigated. The electron correlation is treated using a spectral density approach and J-T interaction is added to the model. We find that…
We study a one-dimensional (1D) interacting electronic liquid coupled to a 1D array of classical magnetic moments and to a superconductor. We show that at low energy and temperature the magnetic moments and the electrons become strongly entangled and that a magnetic spiral structure emerges without any adjustable parameters. For strong enough coupling between the two, the 1D electronic liquid is driven into a topological superconducting phase supporting Majorana fermions without any fine-tuning of external parameters. Our analysis applies at low enough temperature to a quantum wire in proximit…
Motivated by the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on FeSe and iron pnictide families of iron-based superconductors, we have studied the orbital nematic order and its interplay with antiferromagnetism within the two-orbital Hubbard model. We used random phase approximation (RPA) to calculate the dependence of the orbital and magnetic susceptibilities on the strength of interactions and electron density (doping). To account for strong electron correlations not captured by RPA, we further employed non-perturbative variational cluster approximation (VCA) capable of capturin…
In this work, we investigate the magnetic, heat capacity and electrical transport properties of Ce0.6La0.4Ge and Ce0.24La0.76Ge compounds. Our results show that two antiferromagnetic transitions (~ at 4.7 and 2.7 K) exhibited by Ce0.6La0.4Ge are suppressed below 1.8 K for Ce0.24La0.76Ge. Interestingly, for Ce0.24La0.76Ge, susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity vary with temperature as: T0.75, T0.5 and T1.6 respectively. The observation of such anomalous temperature variation suggests to the Non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior due to the presence of disordered 4f spins due to Ce-s…
The mutual influence of the conduction electron system provided by organic donor layers and magnetic system localized in insulating layers of the molecular charge transfer salt $κ$-(BETS)$_2$FeBr$_4$ has been studied. It is demonstrated that besides the high-field re-entrant superconducting state, the interaction between the two systems plays important role for the low-field superconductivity. The coupling of normal-state charge carriers to the magnetic system is reflected in magnetic quantum oscillations and can be evaluated based on the angle-dependent beating behaviour of the oscillations. …
Recent experiments in iron pnictide superconductors reveal that, as the putative magnetic quantum critical point is approached, different types of magnetic order coexist over a narrow region of the phase diagram. Although these magnetic configurations share the same wave-vectors, they break distinct symmetries of the lattice. Importantly, the highest superconducting transition temperature takes place close to this proliferation of near-degenerate magnetic states. In this paper, we employ a renormalization group calculation to show that such a behavior naturally arises due to the effects of spi…
The interplay between itinerant electrons and local magnetic moments in quantum materials brings about rich and fascinating phenomena and stimulates various developments in the theoretical framework. In this work, thermodynamic, electric transport, and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on a newly synthesized honeycomb lattice magnet TmNi$_3$Al$_9$. Based on the experimental data, a magnetic field temperature phase diagram was constructed, exhibiting three essentially different magnetic regions. Below ${T_{\rm N}=2.97 \pm 0.02}\ \rm K$ Tm$^{3+}$ moments order antiferromagnetically…
This work is devoted to the study of how spin texture excitations are affected by the presence of a static nonmagnetic impurity whenever they lie on a conical support. We realize a number of novelties as compared to the flat plane case. Indeed, by virtue of the conical shape, the interaction potential between a soliton and an impurity appears to become stronger as long as the cone is tighten. As a consequence, a new kind of solitonic excitation shows up exhibiting lower energy than in the absence of such impurity. In addition, we conclude that such an energy is also dependent upon conical aper…
We investigate two-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg magnets using non-perturbative renormalization group techniques. These magnets allow for point-like topological defects which are believed to unbind and drive either a crossover or a phase transition which separates a low temperature, spin-wave dominated regime from a high temperature regime where defects are abundant. Our approach can account for the crossover qualitatively and both the temperature dependence of the correlation length as well as a broad but well defined peak in the specific heat are reproduced. We find no signatures of a fi…
Contact effects in devices incorporating strongly-correlated electronic materials are comparatively unexplored. We have investigated the electrically-driven phase transition in magnetite (100) thin films by four-terminal methods. In the lateral configuration, the channel length is less than 2 $μ$m, and voltage-probe wires $\sim$100 nm in width are directly patterned within the channel. Multilead measurements quantitatively separate the contributions of each electrode interface and the magnetite channel. We demonstrate that on the onset of the transition contact resistances at both source and d…
In most magnetically-ordered iron pnictides, the magnetic moments lie in the FeAs planes, parallel to the modulation direction of the spin stripes. However, recent experiments in hole-doped iron pnictides have observed a reorientation of the magnetic moments from in-plane to out-of-plane. Interestingly, this reorientation is accompanied by a change in the magnetic ground state from a stripe antiferromagnet to a tetragonal non-uniform magnetic configuration. Motivated by these recent observations, here we investigate the origin of the spin anisotropy in iron pnictides using an itinerant microsc…
Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments of the spin excitations in the slightly overdoped La{1.83}Sr{0.17}CuO{4} compound show that, under the application of a magnetic field of 5 Tesla, the low-temperature susceptibility undergoes a weight redistribution centered at the spin-gap energy. Furthermore, by comparing the temperature dependence of the neutron data with ac-susceptibility and magnetization measurements, we conclude that the filling in of the spin gap tracks the irreversibility/melting temperature rather than Tc2, which indicates an unusual interplay between the magnetic vortices…
The longitudinal in-plane magnetoresistance (LMR) has been measured in different Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)2As2 single crystals and in LiFeAs. For all these compounds, we find a negative LMR in the paramagnetic phase whose magnitude increases as H^2. We show that this negative LMR can be readily explained in terms of suppression of the spin fluctuations by the magnetic field. In the Co-doped samples, the absolute value of the LMR coefficient is found to decrease with doping content in the paramagnetic phase. The analysis of its T dependence in an itinerant nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model evi…
