In their seminal paper, Caves and Schumaker presented a new formalism for quantum optics, intended to serve as a building block for describing two-photon processes, in terms of new, generalized qudratures. The important, revolutionary concept in their formalism was that it was fundamentally two-mode, i.e. the related observables could not be attributed to any single one of the comprising modes, but rather to a generalized complex quadrature that could only be attributed to both of them. Here, we propose a subtle, but fundamentally meaningful modification to their important work. Unlike the above proposal, we deliberately choose a frequency-agnostic definition of the two-mode quadrature, that we motivate on physical grounds. This simple modification has far-reaching implications to the formalism -- the real and imaginary parts of the quadratures now coincide with the famous EPR variables, and our two-mode operators transform trivially under two-mode and single-mode squeezing operations. Their quadratic forms, which we call the "quadrature power" are shown to succinctly generate the $SU(1,1)$ algebra of squeezing Hamiltonians, and correspond directly to important, broadband physical observables, that have been directly measured in experiment and are explicitly related to properties like squeezing and entanglement. This new point of view gives a fresh perspective on two-mode processes that is completely agnostic to the bandwidth, and reveals intriguing new ways for understanding and measuring broadband two-mode squeezing.
We experimentally study a homodyne detection technique for the characterization of a quadrature squeezed field where the correlated bands, here created by four-wave mixing in a hot atomic vapor, are separated by a large frequency gap of more than 6 GHz. The technique uses a two-frequency local oscillator to detect the fluctuations of the correlated bands at a frequency accessible to the detection electronics. Working at low detection frequency, the method allows for the determination of both the amplitude and the phase of the squeezing spectrum. In particular, we show that the quadrature squee…
We consider sub-Poissonian single-mode laser with external synchronization and analyze its applicability to the problems of quantum information. Using Heisenberg-Langevin theory we calculate the quadrature variances of the field emitted by this laser. It is shown that such systems can demonstrate strong quadrature squeezing. Taking into account that the emitted field is temporally multi-mode the application of such sources to multichannel quantum teleportation and dense coding protocols is discussed.
We realize an end-to-end no-switching quantum key distribution protocol using continuous-wave coherent light. We encode weak broadband Gaussian modulations onto the amplitude and phase quadratures of light beams at the Shannon's information limit. Our no-switching protocol achieves high secret key rate via a post-selection protocol that utilizes both quadrature information simultaneously. We establish a secret key rate of 25 Mbits/s for a lossless channel and 1 kbit/s, per 17 MHz of detected bandwidth, for 90% channel loss. Since our scheme is truly broadband, it can potentially deliver orders…
Squeezed light is a key quantum resource that enables quantum advantages for sensing, networking, and computing applications. The scalable generation and manipulation of squeezed light with integrated platforms are highly desired for the development of quantum technology with continuous variables. In this letter, we demonstrate squeezed light generation with thin-film lithium niobate integrated photonics. Para-metric down-conversion is realized with quasi-phase matching using ferroelectric domain engineering. With sub-wavelength mode confinement, efficient nonlinear processes can be observed w…
We report demonstrations of both quadrature squeezed vacuum and photon number difference squeezing generated in an integrated nanophotonic device. Squeezed light is generated via strongly driven spontaneous four-wave mixing below threshold in silicon nitride microring resonators. The generated light is characterized with both homodyne detection and direct measurements of photon statistics using photon number-resolving transition edge sensors. We measure $1.0(1)$~dB of broadband quadrature squeezing (${\sim}4$~dB inferred on-chip) and $1.5(3)$~dB of photon number difference squeezing (${\sim}7$…
Squeezed light are optical beams with variance below the Shot Noise Level. They are a key resource for quantum technologies based on photons, they can be used to achieve better precision measurements, improve security in quantum key distribution channels and as a fundamental resource for quantum computation. To date, the majority of experiments based on squeezed light have been based on non-linear crystals and discrete optical components, as the integration of quadrature squeezed states of light in a nanofabrication-friendly material is a challenging technological task. Here we measure 0.45 dB…
We demonstrate the simultaneous quantum state reconstruction of the spectral modes of the light field emitted by a continuous wave degenerate optical parametric amplifier. The scheme is based on broadband measurement of the quantum fluctuations of the electric field quadratures and subsequent Fourier decomposition into spectral intervals. Applying the standard reconstruction algorithms to each bandwidth-limited quantum trajectory, a "spectrum" of density matrices and Wigner functions is obtained. The recorded states show a smooth transition from the squeezed vacuum to a vacuum state. In the ti…
We report on the demonstration of broadband squeezed laser beams that show a frequency dependent orientation of the squeezing ellipse. Carrier frequency as well as quadrature angle were stably locked to a reference laser beam at 1064nm. This frequency dependent squeezing was characterized in terms of noise power spectra and contour plots of Wigner functions. The later were measured by quantum state tomography. Our tomograph allowed a stable lock to a local oscillator beam for arbitrary quadrature angles with one degree precision. Frequency dependent orientations of the squeezing ellipse are ne…
We theoretically study quadrature and polarization squeezing in dispersive optical bistability through a vectorial Kerr cavity model describing a nonlinear cavity filled with an isotropic chi(3) medium in which self-phase and cross-phase modulation, as well as four--wave mixing, occur. We derive expressions for the quantum fluctuations of the output field quadratures as a function of which we express the spectrum of fluctuations of the output field Stokes parameters. We pay particular attention to study how the bifurcations affecting the non-null linearly polarized output mode squeezes the ort…
We observed -7.2 dB quadrature squeezing at 860 nm by using a sub-threshold continuous-wave pumped optical parametric oscillator with a periodically-poled KTiOPO4 crystal as a nonlinear optical medium. The squeezing level was measured with the phase of homodyne detection locked at the quadrature. The blue light induced infrared absorption was not observed in the experiment.
We introduce, for each state of a bosonic quantum field, its quadrature coherence scale (QCS), a measure of the range of its quadrature coherences. Under coupling to a thermal bath, the purity and QCS are shown to decrease on a time scale inversely proportional to the QCS squared. The states most fragile to decoherence are therefore those with quadrature coherences far from the diagonal. We further show a large QCS is difficult to measure since it induces small scale variations in the state's Wigner function. These two observations imply a large QCS constitutes a mark of "macroscopic coherence…
Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) of a classical mechanical force detection results from quantum back action perturbing evolution of a mechanical system. In this paper we show that usage of a multidimensional optical transducer may enable a broadband quantum back action evading measurement. We study a corresponding technique for measurement of a resonant signal force acting on a linear mechanical oscillator coupled to an optical system with three optical modes with separation nearly equal to the mechanical frequency. The measurement is performed by optical pumping of the central optical mode and me…
We report a 65MHz-bandwidth triangular-shaped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for squeezed vacuum generation at 860nm. The triangle structure of our OPO enables the round-trip length to reach 45mm as a ring cavity, which provides a counter circulating optical path available for introducing a probe beam or generating another squeezed vacuum. Hence our OPO is suitable for the applications in high-speed quantum information processing where two or more squeezed vacua form a complicated interferometer, like continuous-variable quantum teleportation. With a homemade, broadband and low-loss homod…
Interferometers enable ultrasensitive measurement in a wide array of applications from gravitational wave searches to force microscopes. The role of quantum mechanics in the metrological limits of interferometers has a rich history, and a large number of techniques to surpass conventional limits have been proposed. In a typical measurement configuration, the tradeoff between the probe's shot noise (imprecision) and its quantum backaction results in what is known as the standard quantum limit (SQL). In this work we investigate how quantum correlations accessed by modifying the readout of the in…
Quantum teleportation of an unknown broadband electromagnetic field is investigated. The continuous-variable teleportation protocol by Braunstein and Kimble [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 80}, 869 (1998)] for teleporting the quantum state of a single mode of the electromagnetic field is generalized for the case of a multimode field with finite bandwith. We discuss criteria for continuous-variable teleportation with various sets of input states and apply them to the teleportation of broadband fields. We first consider as a set of input fields (from which an independent state preparer draws the inputs t…
Optical satellite links open up new prospects for realizing quantum physical experiments over unprecedented length scales. We analyze and affirm the feasibility of detecting quantum squeezing in an optical mode with homodyne detection of only one bit resolution, as is found in satellites already in orbit. We show experimentally that, in combination with a coherent displacement, a binary homodyne detector can still detect quantum squeezing efficiently even under high loss. The sample overhead in comparison to non-discretized homodyne detection is merely a factor of 3.3.
The Wigner function for one and two-mode quantum systems is explicitely expressed in terms of the marginal distribution for the generic linearly transformed quadratures. Then, also the density operator of those systems is written in terms of the marginal distribution of these quadratures. Some examples to apply this formalism, and a reduction to the usual optical homodyne tomography are considered.
We study the squeezing of output quadratures of an electro-magnetic field escaping from a resonator coupled to a general quantum system with arbitrary interaction strengths. The generalized theoretical analysis of output squeezing proposed here is valid for all the interaction regimes of cavity-quantum electrodynamics: from the weak to the strong, ultrastrong, and deep coupling regimes. For coupling rates comparable or larger then the cavity resonance frequency, the standard input-output theory for optical cavities fails to calculate the correct output field-quadratures and predicts a non-negl…
Theoretical results are presented which show that noiseless phase quadrature amplification is possible, and limited experimentally only by the efficiency of the phase detection system. Experimental results obtained using a Nd:YAG laser show a signal gain of 10dB and a signal transfer ratio of T_s=0.9. This result easily exceeds the standard quantum limit for signal transfer. The results also explicitly demonstrate the phase sensitive nature of the amplification process.
It is well known that the reduced state of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state is a thermal state---i.e. a state whose photon-number statistics obey a geometric distribution. More exotic \emph{broadband} states can be realized as the reduced state of two spectrally-entangled beams generated using nonlinear optics. We show that these broadband "pseudothermal" states are tensor products of states in spectral Schmidt modes, whose photon-number statistics obey a geometric distribution. We study the spectral and temporal coherence properties of these states and show that their spectral coherence can b…
We discuss the possibility of generating noncritical quadrature squeezing by spontaneous polarization symmetry breaking. We consider first type-II frequency-degenerate optical parametric oscillators, but discard them for a number of reasons. Then we propose a four-wave mixing cavity in which the polarization of the output mode is always linear but has an arbitrary orientation. We show that in such a cavity complete noise suppression in a quadrature of the output field occurs, irrespective of the parameter values.
The continuous-variable coherent (conat) channel is a useful resource for coherent communication, producing coherent teleportation and coherent superdense coding. We extend the conat channel to multiparty conditions by proposing definitions about multiparty position-quadrature conat channel and multiparty momentum-quadrature conat channel. We additionally provide two methods to implement this channel using linear optics. One method is the multiparty version of coherent communication assisted by entanglement and classical communication (CCAECC). The other is multiparty coherent superdense codin…
The pure quantum correlations totally independent of the classical coherence of light have been experimentally demonstrated. By measuring the visibility of the interference fringes and the correlation variances of amplitude and phase quadratures between a pair of bright twin optical beams with different frequencies produced from a non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator, we found that when classical interference became worse even vanished, the quadrature quantum correlations were not influenced, completely. The presented experiment obviously shows the quantum correlations of light do not …
We report the experimental demonstration of polarization squeezed beam at 795 nm by combining a quadrature squeezed beam with a coherent beam. The quadrature squeezed beam is generated by a degenerate optical parametric amplifier based on a PPKTP crystal. Stokes parameter squeezing of -3.8 dB and anti squeezing of +5.0 dB is observed. This polarization squeezed beam resonant to rubidium D1 line has potential applications in quantum information networks and precise measurement beyond the shot noise limit.
We present a simple formalism describing evolution of a qubit in the process of its measurement in a circuit QED setup. When a phase-sensitive amplifier is used, the evolution depends on only one output quadrature, and the formalism is the same as for a broadband setup. When a phase-preserving amplifier is used, the qubit evolution depends on two output quadratures. In both cases a perfect monitoring of the qubit state and therefore a perfect quantum feedback is possible.
We analyze a fiber-optic gyroscope design enhanced by the injection of quantum-optical squeezed vacuum into a fiber-based Sagnac interferometer. In the presence of fiber loss, we compute the maximum attainable enhancement over a classical, laser-driven fiber-optic gyroscope in terms of the angular velocity estimate variance from a homodyne measurement. We find a constant enhancement factor that depends on the degree of squeezing introduced into the system but has diminishing returns beyond $10$--$15$ dB of squeezing. Under a realistic constraint of fixed total fiber length, we show that segmen…
Quantum noise limits the sensitivity of laser interferometric gravitational-wave detectors. Given the state-of-the-art optics, the optical losses define the lower bound of the best possible quantum-limited detector sensitivity. In this work, we come up with a broadband signal recycling scheme which gives potential solution to approaching this lower bound by converting the signal recycling cavity to be a broadband signal amplifier using an active optomechanical filter. We will show the difference and advantage of such a scheme compared with the previous white light cavity scheme using the optom…
We have developed an optical parametric amplification module for quadrature squeezing with input and output ports coupled with optical fibers for both fundamental and second harmonic. The module consists of a periodically poled LiNbO${}_{3}$ ridge waveguide fabricated with dry etching, dichroic beamsplitters, lenses and four optical fiber pigtales. The high durability of the waveguide and the good separation of squeezed light from a pump beam by the dichroic beamsplitter enable us to inject intense continuous-wave pump light with the power of over 300 mW. We perform $-$4.0${\pm}$0.1 dB of nois…
Homodyne measurement is a corner-stone of quantum optics. It measures the fundamental variables of quantum electrodynamics - the quadratures of light, which represent the cosine-wave and sine-wave components of an optical field and constitute the quantum optical analog of position and momentum. Yet, standard homodyne, which is used to measure the quadrature information, suffers from a severe bandwidth limitation: While the bandwidth of optical states can easily span many THz, standard homodyne detection is inherently limited to the electrically accessible, MHz to GHz range, leaving a dramatic …
Quantum memories, devices that can store and retrieve photonic quantum states on demand, are essential components for scalable quantum technologies. It is desirable to push the memory towards the broadband regime in order to increase the data rate. Here, we present a theoretical and experimental study on the broadband optical memory based on electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) protocol. We first provide a theoretical analysis on the issues and requirements to achieve a broadband EIT memory. We then present our experimental efforts on EIT memory in cold atoms towards the broadband or…
The concept of `flat optics' is quickly conquering different fields of photonics, but its implementation in quantum optics is still at infancy. In particular, polarization entanglement, which is central to quantum photonics due to the simplicity of polarization qubit encoding and control, is so far not realized on flat platforms. Meanwhile, relaxed phase matching of flat nonlinear optical sources enables enormous freedom in tailoring their polarization properties. Here we use this freedom to generate photon pairs with tunable polarization entanglement via spontaneous parametric down-conversion…
We demonastrate experimental technique for generating spatially single-mode broadband biphoton field. The method is based on dispersive optical element which precisely tailors the structure of type-I SPDC frequency angular spectrum in order to shift different spectral components to a single angular mode. Spatial mode filtering is realized by coupling biphotons into a single-mode optical fiber.
We describe an all-fiber nonlinear interferometer based on four-wave mixing in highly nonlinear fiber. Our configuration realizes phase-sensitive interference with 97% peak visibility and >90% visibility over a broad 554 GHz optical band. By comparing the output noise power to the shot-noise level, we confirm noise cancellation at dark interference fringes, as required for quantum-enhanced sensitivity. Our device extends nonlinear interferometry to the important platform of highly nonlinear optical fiber, and could find application in a variety of fiber-based sensors.
The generation of large multiphoton quantum states - for applications in computing, metrology, and simulation - requires a network of high-efficiency quantum memories capable of storing broadband pulses. Integrating these memories into a fibre offers a number of advantages towards realising this goal: strong light-matter coupling at low powers, simplified alignment, and compatibility with existing photonic architectures. Here, we introduce a large-core kagome-structured hollow-core fibre as a suitable platform for an integrated fibre-based quantum memory with a warm atomic vapour. We demonstra…
Sources of broadband quantum correlated photons present a valuable resource for quantum metrology, sensing, and communication. Here, we report the generation of spectrally broadband correlated photons from frequency nondegenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a custom-designed lithium niobate superlattice. The superlattice induces a nonlinear interference, resulting in an experimentally observed comb-like emission spanning 0.060 um and 1.4 um of spectral bandwidth at 0.647 um and 3.0 um wavelengths, respectively. In addition to useful technological applications, our concept offers …
The experimental check of two--mode Robertson uncertainty relations and inequalities for highest quadrature moments is suggested by using homodyne photon detection. The relation between optical tomograms and symplectic tomograms is used to connect the tomographic dispersion matrix and the quadrature components dispersion matrix of the two--mode field states.
Modification of electromagnetic quantum fluctuations in the form of quadrature-squeezing is a central quantum resource, which can be generated from nonlinear optical processes. Such a process is facilitated by coherent two-photon excitation of the strongly bound biexciton in atomically thin semiconductors. We show theoretically that interfacing an atomically thin semiconductor with an optical cavity allows to harness this two-photon resonance and use the biexcitonic parametric gain to generate squeezed light with input power an order of magnitude below current state-of-the-art devices with con…
