We formulate explicit bounds to guarantee the exponential dissipation for some non-gradient stochastic differential equations towards their invariant distributions. Our method extends the connection between Gamma calculus and Hessian operators in $L^2$--Wasserstein space. In details, we apply Lyapunov methods in the space of probabilities, where the Lyapunov functional is chosen as the relative Fisher information. We derive the Fisher information induced Gamma calculus to handle non-gradient drift vector fields. We obtain the explicit dissipation bound in terms of $L_1$ distance and formulate the non-reversible Poincar{é} inequality. An analytical example is provided for a non-reversible Langevin dynamic.
We derive the fluctuation-dissipation relation and explore its connection with the equipartition theorem and Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics through the use of different stochastic analytical techniques. Our first approach is the theory of backward stochastic differential equations, which arises naturally in this context, and facilitates the understanding of the interplay between these classical results of statistical mechanics. The second approach consists in deriving forward stochastic differential equations for the energy of an electric system according to both Itô and Stratonovich stochastic …
The classical Bakry-Émery calculus is extended to study, for degenerated (non-elliptic, non-reversible, or non-diffusive) Markov processes, questions such as hypoellipticity, hypocoercivity, functional inequalities or Wasserstein contraction. In particular we obtain the optimal speed of convergence to equilibrium for any ergodic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, which is given by the spectral gap of the drift matrix and the size of the corresponding Jordan blocks. We also study chains of $N$ interacting overdamped particles and establish for their invariant measures log-Sobolev inequalities with con…
The Energy-Dissipation Principle provides a variational tool for the analysis of parabolic evolution problems: solutions are characterized as so-called null-minimizers of a global functional on entire trajectories. This variational technique allows for applying the general results of the calculus of variations to the underlying differential problem and has been successfully applied in a variety of deterministic cases, ranging from doubly nonlinear flows to curves of maximal slope in metric spaces. The aim of this note is to extend the Energy-Dissipation Principle to stochastic parabolic evolut…
We revisit the variational characterization of diffusion as entropic gradient flux and provide for it a probabilistic interpretation based on stochastic calculus. It was shown by Jordan, Kinderlehrer, and Otto that, for diffusions of Langevin-Smoluchowski type, the Fokker-Planck probability density flow minimizes the rate of relative entropy dissipation, as measured by the distance traveled in the ambient space of probability measures with finite second moments, in terms of the quadratic Wasserstein metric. We obtain novel, stochastic-process versions of these features, valid along almost ever…
We develop a formalism to discuss the properties of GENERIC systems in terms of corresponding Hamiltonians that appear in the characterization of large-deviation limits. We demonstrate how the GENERIC structure naturally arises from a certain symmetry in the Hamiltonian, which extends earlier work that has connected the large-deviation behaviour of reversible stochastic processes to the gradient-flow structure of their deterministic limit. Natural examples of application include particle systems with inertia.
We present a spectral-theoretic approach to time-average statistical mechanics for general, non-equilibrium initial conditions. We consider the statistics of bounded, local additive functionals of reversible as well as irreversible ergodic stochastic dynamics with continuous or discrete state-space. We derive exact results for the mean, fluctuations and correlations of time average observables from the eigenspectrum of the underlying generator of Fokker-Planck or master equation dynamics, and discuss the results from a physical perspective. Feynman-Kac formulas are re-derived using Itô calculu…
We derive sub-Riemannian Ricci curvature tensor for sub-Riemannian manifolds. We provide examples including the Heisenberg group, displacement group, and Martinet sub-Riemannian structure with arbitrary weighted volumes, in which we establish analytical bounds for sub-Riemannian curvature dimension bounds and log-Sobolev inequalities. {These bounds can be used to establish the entropy dissipation results for sub-Riemannian drift diffusion processes on a compact spatial domain, in term of $L_1$ distance.} Our derivation of Ricci curvature is based on generalized Gamma $z$ calculus and $z$--Boch…
We consider degenerate diffusion equations of the form $\partial_tp_t = Δf(p_t)$ on a bounded domain and subject to no-flux boundary conditions, for a class of nonlinearities $f$ that includes the porous medium equation. We derive for them a trajectorial analogue of the entropy dissipation identity, which describes the rate of entropy dissipation along every path of the diffusion. Our approach is based on applying stochastic calculus to the underlying probabilistic representations, which in our context are stochastic differential equations with normal reflection on the boundary. This trajector…
The dissipation of general convex entropies for continuous time Markov processes can be described in terms of backward martingales with respect to the tail filtration. The relative entropy is the expected value of a backward submartingale. In the case of (non necessarily reversible) Markov diffusion processes, we use Girsanov theory to explicit the Doob-Meyer decomposition of this submartingale. We deduce a stochastic analogue of the well known entropy dissipation formula, which is valid for general convex entropies, including the total variation distance. Under additional regularity assumptio…
We formulate a trajectorial version of the relative entropy dissipation identity for McKean$-$Vlasov diffusions, extending the results of the papers [FJ16,KST20a], which apply to non-interacting diffusions. Our stochastic analysis approach is based on time-reversal of diffusions and Lions' differential calculus over Wasserstein space. It allows us to compute explicitly the rate of relative entropy dissipation along every trajectory of the underlying diffusion via the semimartingale decomposition of the corresponding relative entropy process. As a first application, we obtain a new interpretati…

We propose a way to break symmetry in stochastic dynamics by introducing a dissipation term. We show in a specific mean-field model, that if the reversible model undergoes a phase transition of ferromagnetic type, then its dissipative counterpart exhibits periodic orbits in the thermodynamic limit.
