Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos (GMC) is informally defined as a random measure $e^{γX} \mathrm{d} x$ where $X$ is Gaussian field on $\mathbb R^d$ (or an open subset of it) whose correlation function is of the form $ K(x,y)= \log \frac{1}{|y-x|}+ L(x,y),$ where $L$ is a continuous function $x$ and $y$ and $γ=α+iβ$ is a complex parameter. In the present paper, we consider the case $γ\in \mathcal P'_{\mathrm{III}}$ where $$ \mathcal P'_{\mathrm{III}}:= \{ α+i β\ : α,γ\in \mathbb R , \ |α|<\sqrt{d/2}, \ α^2+β^2\ge d \}.$$ We prove that if $X$ is replaced by the approximation $X_\varepsilon$ obtained by convolution with a smooth kernel, then $e^{γX_\varepsilon} \mathrm d x$, when properly rescaled, has an explicit non-trivial limit in distribution when $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. This limit does not depend on the specific convolution kernel which is used to define $X_{\varepsilon}$ and can be described as a complex Gaussian white noise with a random intensity given by a real GMC associated with parameter $2α$.
We present new, short and self-contained proofs of the convergence (with an adequate renormalization) of four different sequences to the critical Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos:(a) the derivative martingale (b) the critical martingale (c) the exponential of the mollified field (d) the subcritical Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos.
Motivated by isotropic fully developed turbulence, we define a theory of symmetric matrix valued isotropic Gaussian multiplicative chaos. Our construction extends the scalar theory developed by J.P. Kahane in 1985.
We consider Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures defined in a general setting of metric measure spaces. Uniqueness results are obtained, verifying that different sequences of approximating Gaussian fields lead to the same chaos measure. Specialized to Euclidean spaces, our setup covers both the subcritical chaos and the critical chaos, actually extending to all non-atomic Gaussian chaos measures.
In this note we prove that suitable positive powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of a Haar distributed random unitary matrix converge in law, as the size of the matrix tends to infinity, to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure once correctly normalized. We prove this in the whole $L^1$- or subcritical phase of the chaos measure.

This paper is concerned with the construction of atomic Gaussian multiplicative chaos and the KPZ formula in Liouville quantum gravity. On the first hand, we construct purely atomic random measures corresponding to values of the parameter $γ^2$ beyond the transition phase (i.e. $γ^2>2d$) and check the duality relation with sub-critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos. On the other hand, we give a simplified proof of the classical KPZ formula as well as the dual KPZ formula for atomic Gaussian multiplicative chaos. In particular, this framework allows to construct singular Liouville measures and …
We prove that when suitably normalized, small enough powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of random Hermitian matrices, drawn from one-cut regular unitary invariant ensembles, converge in law to Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures. We prove this in the so-called $L^2$-phase of multiplicative chaos. Our main tools are asymptotics of Hankel determinants with Fisher-Hartwig singularities. Using Riemann-Hilbert methods, we prove a rather general Fisher-Hartwig formula for one-cut regular unitary invariant ensembles.
We study the characteristic polynomial of Haar distributed random unitary matrices. We show that after a suitable normalization, as one increases the size of the matrix, powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial as well as powers of the exponential of its argument converge in law to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure for small enough real powers. This establishes a connection between random matrix theory and the theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos.
We show that the imaginary multiplicative chaos $\exp(iβΓ)$ determines the gradient of the underlying field $Γ$ for all log-correlated Gaussian fields with covariance of the form $-\log |x-y| + g(x,y)$ with mild regularity conditions on $g$, for all $d \geq 2$ and for all $β\in (0,\sqrt{d})$. In particular, we show that the 2D continuum zero boundary Gaussian free field is measurable w.r.t. its imaginary chaos.
The purpose of these notes, based on a course given by the second author at Les Houches summer school, is to explain the probabilistic construction of Polyakov's Liouville quantum gravity using the theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos. In particular, these notes contain a detailed description of the so-called Liouville measures of the theory and their conjectured relation to the scaling limit of large planar maps properly embedded in the sphere. These notes are rather short and require no prior knowledge on the topic.
We study the characteristic polynomials of both the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles. We show that for both ensembles, powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomials converge in law to Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures after normalization for sufficiently small real powers. The main tool is a new asymptotic relation between the fractional moments of the absolute characteristic polynomials of Gaussian Orthogonal, Unitary, and Symplectic Ensembles.
We determine the exact threshold of the extended Seiberg bound for the existence of correlation functions in the boundary Liouville conformal field theory in the unit disk. In probabilistic terms, our result is a toolbox yielding the threshold for the existence of positive moments of Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure, appliable to the case where singularities of arbitrary (co-)dimension in the background metric are present. We improve previous results of this type for 0-dimensional singularities in [DKRV16] and a sufficient condition for the 1-dimensional singularity in an unpublished appe…
We prove that multiplicative chaos measures can be constructed from extreme level sets or thick points of the underlying logarithmically correlated field. We develop a method which covers the whole subcritical phase and only requires asymptotics of suitable exponential moments for the field. As an application, we establish these estimates hold for the logarithm of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of a Haar distributed random unitary matrix (CUE), using known asymptotics for Toeplitz determinant with (merging) Fisher-Hartwig singularities. Hence, this proves a conjecture of F…
In this article we study imaginary Gaussian multiplicative chaos -- namely a family of random generalized functions which can formally be written as $e^{i X(x)}$, where $X$ is a log-correlated real-valued Gaussian field on $\mathbb{R}^d$, i.e. it has a logarithmic singularity on the diagonal of its covariance. We study basic analytic properties of these random generalized functions, such as what spaces of distributions do these objects live in, along with their basic stochastic properties, such as moment and tail estimates. After this, we discuss connections between imaginary multiplicative ch…
We consider powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of Haar distributed random orthogonal or symplectic matrices, as well as powers of the exponential of its argument, as a random measure on the unit circle minus small neighborhoods around $\pm 1$. We show that for small enough powers and under suitable normalization, as the matrix size goes to infinity, these random measures converge in distribution to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure. Our result is analogous to one on unitary matrices previously established by Christian Webb in [31]. We thus complete the connecti…
We consider a log-gas on a discretization of the unit circle. We prove that if the gas is not too dense, or the number of particles in the gas is not too large compared to the scale of the discretization, the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial can be described in terms of a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure. This is done by analyzing discrete Toeplitz determinants with Fisher-Hartwig singularities. In particular, we prove that if the gas is not too dense, the classical Fisher-Hartwig conjecture holds for the discrete Toeplitz determinant as well. Our analysis suggests that if …
In the present paper, we show that (under some minor technical assumption) Complex Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos defined as the complex exponential of a $\log$-correlated Gaussian field can be obtained by taking the limit of the exponential of the field convoluted with a smoothing Kernel. We consider two types of chaos: $e^{γX}$ for a log correlated field $X$ and $γ=α+iβ$, $α, β\in \mathbb R$ and $e^{αX+iβY}$ for $X$ and $Y$ two independent fields with $α, β\in \mathbb R$. Our result is valid in the range $$ \mathcal O_{\mathrm{sub}}:=\{ α^2+β^2<d \} \cup \{ |α|\in (\sqrt{d/2},\sqrt{2d} ) \tex…
In this article, we study complex Gaussian multiplicative chaos. More precisely, we study the renormalization theory and the limit of the exponential of a complex log-correlated Gaussian field in all dimensions (including Gaussian Free Fields in dimension 2). Our main working assumption is that the real part and the imaginary part are independent. We also discuss applications in 2D string theory; in particular we give a rigorous mathematical definition of the so-called Tachyon fields, the conformally invariant operators in critical Liouville Quantum Gravity with a c=1 central charge, and deriv…
We study random walks in a random environment on a regular, rooted, coloured tree. The asymptotic behaviour of the walks is classified for ergodicity/transience in terms of the geometric properties of the matrix describing the random environment. A related problem, with only one type of vertices and quite stringent conditions on the transition probabilities but on general trees has been considered previously in the literature LyoPem. In the presentation we give here, we restrict the study of the process on a regular graph instead of the irregular graph used in LyoPem. The close connection betw…
We study one-dimensional exact scaling lognormal multiplicative chaos measures at criticality. Our main results are the determination of the exact asymptotics of the right tail of the distribution of the total mass of the measure, and an almost sure upper bound for the modulus of continuity of the cumulative distribution function of the measure. We also find an almost sure lower bound for the increments of the measure almost everywhere with respect to the measure itself, strong enough to show that the measure is supported on a set of Hausdorff dimension $0$.
In this article, we review the theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos initially introduced by Kahane's seminal work in 1985. Though this beautiful paper faded from memory until recently, it already contains ideas and results that are nowadays under active investigation, like the construction of the Liouville measure in 2d-Liouville quantum gravity or thick points of the Gaussian Free Field. Also, we mention important extensions and generalizations of this theory that have emerged ever since and discuss a whole family of applications, ranging from finance, through the Kolmogorov-Obukhov model …
Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos is a way to produce a measure on $\R^d$ (or subdomain of $\R^d$) of the form $e^{γX(x)} dx$, where $X$ is a log-correlated Gaussian field and $γ\in [0,\sqrt{2d})$ is a fixed constant. A renormalization procedure is needed to make this precise, since $X$ oscillates between $-\infty$ and $\infty$ and is not a function in the usual sense. This procedure yields the zero measure when $γ=\sqrt{2d}$. Two methods have been proposed to produce a non-trivial measure when $γ=\sqrt{2d}$. The first involves taking a derivative at $γ=\sqrt{2d}$ (and was studied in an earlier pa…
We consider a sub-critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) measure defined on the unit interval [0,1] and prove an exact formula for the fractional moments of the total mass of this measure. Our formula includes the case where log-singularities (also called insertion points) are added in 0 and 1, the most general case predicted by the Selberg integral. The idea to perform this computation is to introduce certain auxiliary functions resembling holomorphic observables of conformal field theory that will be solutions of hypergeometric equations. Solving these equations then provides non-trivi…
For an $N \times N$ random unitary matrix $U_N$, we consider the random field defined by counting the number of eigenvalues of $U_N$ in a mesoscopic arc of the unit circle, regularized at an $N$-dependent scale $ε_N>0$. We prove that the renormalized exponential of this field converges as $N \to \infty$ to a Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure in the whole subcritical phase. In addition, we show that the moments of the total mass converge to a Selberg-like integral and by taking a further limit as the size of the arc diverges, we establish part of the conjectures in \cite{Ost16}. By an analo…
This review-style article presents an overview of recent progress in constructing and studying critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos. A proof that the critical measure in any dimension can be obtained as a limit of subcritical measures is given.
Rescaled Mellin-type transforms of the exponential functional of the Bourgade-Kuan-Rodgers statistic of Riemann zeroes are conjecturally related to the distribution of the total mass of the limit lognormal stochastic measure of Mandelbrot-Bacry-Muzy. The conjecture implies that a non-trivial, log-infinitely divisible probability distribution is associated with Riemann zeroes. For application, integral moments, covariance structure, multiscaling spectrum, and asymptotics associated with the exponential functional are computed in closed form using the known meromorphic extension of the Selberg i…
We propose a new definition of the Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) and an approach based on the relation of subcritical GMC to randomized shifts of a Gaussian measure. Using this relation we prove general uniqueness and convergence results for subcritical GMC that hold for Gaussian fields with arbitrary covariance kernels.
We study non-Gaussian log-correlated multiplicative chaos, where the random field is defined as a sum of independent fields that satisfy suitable moment and regularity conditions. The convergence, existence of moments and analyticity with respect to the inverse temperature are proven for the resulting chaos in the full subcritical range. These results are generalizations of the corresponding theorems for Gaussian multiplicative chaos. A basic example where our results apply is the non-Gaussian Fourier series \[\sum_{k=1}^\infty \frac{1}{\sqrt{k}}(A_k \cos(2πk x) + B_k \sin(2πk x)),\] where $A_…
In this article, we extend the theory of multiplicative chaos for positive definite functions in Rd of the form f(x) = 2 ln+ T|x|+ g(x) where g is a continuous and bounded function. The construction is simpler and more general than the one defined by Kahane in 1985. As main application, we give a rigorous mathematical meaning to the Kolmogorov-Obukhov model of energy dissipation in a turbulent flow.
In this article we study the tail probability of the mass of Gaussian multiplicative chaos. With the novel use of a Tauberian argument and Goldie's implicit renewal theorem, we provide a unified approach to general log-correlated Gaussian fields in arbitrary dimension and derive precise first order asymptotics of the tail probability, resolving a conjecture of Rhodes and Vargas. The leading order is described by a universal constant that captures the generic property of Gaussian multiplicative chaos, and may be seen as the analogue of the Liouville unit volume reflection coefficients in higher…
We study vertex-like operators built from the Brownian loop soup in the limit as the loop soup intensity tends to infinity. More precisely, following Camia, Gandolfi and Kleban (Nuclear Physics B 902, 2016), we take a Brownian loop soup in a planar domain and assign a random sign to each loop. We then consider random fields defined by taking, at every point of the domain, the exponential of a purely imaginary constant times the sum of the signs associated to the loops that wind around that point. As smaller loops are included in the count, that sum diverges logarithmically with the diameter of…
We prove convergence of a stochastic approximation of powers of the Riemann $ζ$ function to a non-Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure, and prove that this measure is a non-trivial multifractal random measure. The results cover both the subcritical and critical chaos. A basic ingredient of the proof is a 'good' Gaussian approximation of the induced random fields that is potentially of independent interest.
A completely elementary and self-contained proof of convergence of Gaussian multiplicative chaos is given. The argument shows further that the limiting random measure is nontrivial in the entire subcritical phase $(γ< \sqrt{2d})$ and that the limit is universal (i.e., the limiting measure is independent of the regularisation of the underlying field)
We show that for $γ<\sqrt{4/3}$, it is possible to define the Levy area of a planar Brownian motion with the Liouville measure of intermittency parameter $γ$ as the underlying area measure. We also consider the case of smoother curves, and study some properties of the integration map thus defined.
We study the total mass of high points in a random model for the Riemann-Zeta function. We consider the same model as in [8], [2], and build on the convergence to 'Gaussian' multiplicative chaos proved in [14]. We show that the total mass of points which are a linear order below the maximum divided by their expectation converges almost surely to the Gaussian multiplicative chaos of the approximating Gaussian process times a random function. We use the second moment method together with a branching approximation to establish this convergence.
We study the secular coefficients of $N \times N$ random unitary matrices $U_{N}$ drawn from the Circular $β$-Ensemble, which are defined as the coefficients of $\{z^n\}$ in the characteristic polynomial $\det(1-zU_{N}^{*})$. When $β> 4$ we obtain a new class of limiting distributions that arise when both $n$ and $N$ tend to infinity simultaneously. We solve an open problem of Diaconis and Gamburd by showing that for $β=2$, the middle coefficient tends to zero as $N \to \infty$. We show how the theory of Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) plays a prominent role in these problems and in the ex…
