Quantum matter at ultra-low temperatures offers a testbed for analyzing and controlling desired properties in strongly correlated systems. Under typical conditions the nature of the atoms fixes the magnetic character of the system. Beyond classical light potentials leading to optical lattices and short range interactions, high-Q cavities introduce novel dynamics into the system via the quantumness of light. Here we propose a theoretical model and we analyze it using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group simulations. We explore the effects of cavity mediated long range magnetic interactions and optical lattices in ultracold matter. We find that global interactions modify the underlying magnetic character of the system while introducing competition scenarios. Antiferromagnetic correlated bosonic matter emerges in conditions beyond to what nature typically provides. These allow new alternatives toward the design of robust mechanisms for quantum information purposes, exploiting the properties of magnetic phases of strongly correlated quantum matter.
Recent experiments have demonstrated the generation of entanglement by quasi-adiabatically driving through quantum phase transitions of a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a tunable quadratic Zeeman shift. We analyze, in terms of the Fisher information, the interferometric value of the entanglement accessible by this approach. In addition to the Twin-Fock phase studied experimentally, we unveil a second regime, in the broken axisymmetry phase, which provides Heisenberg scaling of the quantum Fisher information and can be reached on shorter time scales. We identif…
Condensate of spin-1 atoms frozen in a unique spatial mode may possess large internal degrees of freedom. The scattering amplitudes of polarized cold atoms scattered by the condensate are obtained with the method of fractional parentage coefficients that treats the spin degrees of freedom rigorously. Channels with scattering cross sections enhanced by square of atom number of the condensate are found. Entanglement between the condensate and the propagating atom can be established by the scattering. The entanglement entropy is analytically obtained for arbitrary initial states. Our results also…
Two component (spinor) Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) are considered as the nodes of an interconnected quantum network. Unlike standard single-system qubits, in a BEC the quantum information is duplicated in a large number of identical bosonic particles, thus can be considered to be a "macroscopic" qubit. One of the difficulties with such a system is how to effectively interact such qubits together in order to transfer quantum information and create entanglement. Here we propose a scheme of cavities containing spinor BECs coupled by optical fiber in order to achieve this task. We discuss ent…
By studying the zero-temperature and nonzero-temperature phase diagrams of the ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model under an external magnetic field, we find that the competition between ferromagnetism and the quadratic Zeeman energy yields two superfluid phases, which feature discontinuous first-order phase transitions between them for a strongly spinor Bose gas such as ${}^7$Li, contrary to the corresponding continuum system.
We study the ground state phases for a mixture of two atomic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in the presence of a weak magnetic (B-) field. The ground state is found to contain a broken-axisymmetry (BA) phase due to competitions among intra- and inter-species spin exchange interactions and the linear Zeeman shifts. This is in contrast to the case of a single species spin- 1 condensate, where the axisymmetry breaking results from competitions among the linear and quadratic Zeeman shifts and the intra-species ferromagnetic interaction. All other remaining ground state phases for the mixt…
We study the low-energy effective theory of spinor condensate ferromagnets for the superfluid velocity and magnetization degrees of freedom. This effective theory describes the competition between spin stiffness and a long-ranged interaction between skyrmions, topological objects familiar from the theory of ordinary ferromagnets. We find exact solutions to the non-linear equations of motion describing neutral configurations of skyrmions and anti-skyrmions. These analytical solutions provide a simple physical picture for the origin of crystalline magnetic order in spinor condensate ferromagnets…
We calculate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) temperature of spin-1 atomic bosons in external magnetic field, taking into account the influence of the quadratic Zeeman effect. In case that the quadratic Zeeman coefficient is positive, the BEC temperature exhibits a nontrivial dependance on the magnetic field and a magnetic-field-induced reentrant phenomenon of BEC is observed. This phenomenon could be well understood by the competition between the linear and quadratic Zeeman effects. Reentrance of BEC in a trapped spinor Bose gas is also discussed.
We investigate the spin dynamics of half-solitons in polariton Bose-Einstein condensates. Half-solitons, which behave as magnetic monopoles, can be accelerated in the presence of the effective magnetic field of the microcavity. We study the generation of DC magnetic currents in a gas of half-solitons. At low densities, the current is suppressed due to the dipolar oscillations. At moderate densities, a magnetic current is recovered as a consequence of the collisions between the carriers. We show a deviation from Ohm's law due to the competition between magnetic dipoles and monopoles.
We study topological excitations in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in an elongated double-well optical potential. This system hosts a new topological defect, the spin Josephson vortex (SJV), which forms due to the competition between the inter-well atomic tunneling and short-range ferromagnetic two-body interaction. We identify the spin structure and formation dynamics of the SJV and determine the phase diagram of the system. By exploiting the intrinsic stability of the SJV, we propose a dynamical method to create SJVs under realistic experimental conditions.
The spinor condensate with spin states degenerated in the ground spin-space provides a unique platform for investigating the edge of quantum mechanics and statistical physics. We study the evolution of the condensate under the scattering of a coherent atom beam. The time-dependent magnetization, entanglement entropy, thermal entropy and the entropy production rate are calculated. A novel spontaneous symmetry breaking is found during the evolution, It is shown that the stationary spin distribution can be controlled by the incoming coherent spin state of the incident atom beam, therefore the ato…
We study the impact of spin-exchange collisions on the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation, by rapidly cooling a chromium multi-component Bose gas. Despite relatively strong spin-dependent interactions, the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation is reached before the spin-degrees of freedom fully thermalize. The increase in density due to Bose-Einstein condensation then triggers spin dynamics, hampering the formation of condensates in spin excited states. Small metastable spinor condensates are nevertheless produced, and manifest strong spin fluctuations.
The ground state of spin-1 ultracold bosons trapped in a periodic one-dimensional optical superlattice is studied. The two sites of the unit cell have an energy shift between them, whose competition with the spin-dependent strength is the main focus of this paper. Charge density wave (CDW) phases appear for semi-integer and integer densities, leading to rich phase diagrams with Mott insulator, superfluid and CDW phases. The spin-dependent interaction favors insulator phases for integer densities and disfavors CDW phases for semi-integer densities, which tend to disappear. Also, quantum phase t…
We propose a pump scheme for quantum circulations, including counter-circulations for superposition states, of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Our scheme is efficient and can be implemented within current experimental technologies and setups. It remains valid for non-classical atomic states, such as pseudo-spin squeezed states and maximal entangled N-GHZ or NooN states. Moreover, it is capable of transforming several enhanced sensing protocols relying on reduced fluctuations from quantum correlation and entanglement of atomic internal states to enhanced measurement of spatial interference a…
We theoretically investigate how entangled atomic states generated via spin-changing collisions in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate can be designed and controllably prepared for atom interferometry that is robust against common technical issues, such as limited detector resolution. We use analytic and numerical treatments of the spin-changing collision process to demonstrate that triggering the entangling collisions with a small classical seed rather than vacuum fluctuations leads to a more robust and superior sensitivity when technical noise is accounted for, despite the generated atomic sta…
Recently, a novel kind of hybrid atom-optomechanical system, consisting of atoms in a lattice coupled to a membrane, has been experimentally realized [Vochezer {\it et al.,} Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{120}, 073602 (2018)], which promises a viable contender in the competitive field of simulating non-equilibrium many-body physics. Here we are motivated to investigate a spinor Bose gas coupled to a vibrational mode of a nano-membrane, focusing on analyzing the role of the spinor degrees of freedom therein. Through an adiabatic elimination of the degrees of freedom of the quantum oscillator, we deri…
We study theoretically several aspects of the dynamics of coherent atom-molecule conversion in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates. Specifically, we discuss how for a suitable dark-state condition the interplay of spin-exchange collisions and photoassociation leads to the stable creation of an atom- molecule pairs from three initial spin-zero atoms. This process involves two two-body interactions and can be intuitively viewed as an effective three-body recombination. We investigate the relative roles of photoassociation and of the initial magnetization in the \resonant" case where the dark state …
A prerequisite for the comprehensive understanding of many-body quantum systems is a characterization in terms of their entanglement structure. The experimental detection of entanglement in spatially extended many-body systems describable by quantum fields still presents a major challenge. We develop a general scheme for certifying entanglement and demonstrate it by revealing entanglement between distinct subsystems of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. Our scheme builds on the spatially resolved simultaneous detection of the quantum field in two conjugate observables which allows the experime…
Motivated by recent realizations of spin-1 NaRb mixtures in the experiments, here we investigate heteronuclear magnetism in the Mott-insulating regime. Different from the identical mixtures where the boson (fermion) statistics only admits even (odd) parity states from angular momentum composition, for heteronuclear atoms in principle all angular momentum states are allowed, which can give rise to new magnetic phases. Various magnetic phases can be developed over these degenerate spaces, however, the concrete symmetry breaking phases depend not only on the degree of degeneracy, but also the com…
Spin squeezing inequalities (SSI) represent a major tool to probe quantum entanglement among a collection of few-level atoms, and are based on collective spin measurements and their fluctuations. Yet, for atomic ensembles of spin-$j$ atoms and ultracold spinor gases, many experiments can image the populations in all Zeeman sublevels $s=-j, -j+1, \dots, j$, potentially revealing finer features of quantum entanglement not captured by SSI. Here we present a systematic approach which exploits Zeeman-sublevel population measurements in order to construct novel entanglement criteria, and illustrate …
Spin-1 Bose gases quenched to spin degeneracy exhibit fragmentation: the appearance of a condensate in more than one single-particle state. Due to its highly entangled nature, the dynamics leading to this collective state are beyond the scope of a Gaussian variational approximation of the many-body wave function. Here, we improve the performance of the Gaussian variational Ansatz by considering dissipation into a fictitious environment, effectively suppressing entanglement within individual quantum trajectories at the expense of introducing a classical mixture of states. We find that this quan…
We report the observation of matter-wave jet emission in a strongly ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of $^7$Li atoms. Directional atomic beams with $|{F=1,m_F=1}\rangle$ and $|{F=1,m_F=-1}\rangle$ spin states are generated from $|{F=1,m_F=0}\rangle$ state condensates, or vice versa. This results from collective spin-mixing scattering events, where spontaneously produced pairs of atoms with opposite momentum facilitates additional spin-mixing collisions as they pass through the condensates. The matter-wave jets of different spin states ($|{F=1,m_F=\pm1}\rangle$) can be a macroscopi…
In the mixture of ultracold spin-1 atoms of two different species A and B (e.g., $^{23}$Na (A) and $^{87}$Rb (B)), inter-species singlet-pairing process ${\rm A}_{+1}+{\rm B}_{-1}\rightleftharpoons {\rm A}_{-1}+{\rm B}_{+1}$, can be induced by the spin-dependent inter-atomic interaction, where subscript $\pm 1$ denotes the magnetic quantum number. Nevertheless, one cannot isolate this process from other spin-changing processes by tuning the bias real magnetic field. As a result, so far the singlet-pairing process have not been clearly observed in the experiments, and the measurement of the cor…
Most interferometers operate with photons or dilute, non-condensed cold atom clouds in which collisions are strongly suppressed. Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) provide an alternative route toward realizing three-mode interferometers; in this realization, spin-changing collisions provide a resource that generates mode entanglement. Working in the regime where the pump mode, i.e., the m=0 hyperfine state, has a much larger population than the side or probe modes (m=+1 and m=-1 hyperfine states), f=1 spinor BECs approximate SU(1,1) interferometers. We derive analytical expressions within…
Presented is a study of a spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by unitary quantum simulations of time-dependent soliton-soliton scattering. The quantum simulation method is based on a quantum lattice algorithm which is designed for implementation on a future digital quantum computer but is tested today using a parallel computing architecture based on graphical processing units (GPUs). We analytically solve the spin-2 BEC equations of motion, a nonlinear system of 5 coupled Gross-Pitiaevskii (GP) equations, in one- and two-spatial dimensions. In 1D there are 16 bright soliton and 16 dark solit…
The extensive control of spin makes spintronics a promising candidate for future scalable quantum devices. For the generation of spin-superfluid systems, a detailed understanding of the build-up of coherence and relaxation is necessary. However, to determine the relevant parameters for robust coherence properties and faithfully witnessing thermalization, the direct access to space- and time-resolved spin observables is needed. Here, we study the thermalization of an easy-plane ferromagnet employing a homogeneous one-dimensional spinor Bose gas. Building on the pristine control of preparation a…
We consider a mixture of two species of spin-1 atoms with interspecies spin exchange, which may cooperate or compete with the intraspecies spin exchanges and thus dramatically affect the ground state. It represents a new class of bosonic gases differing from single-species spinor gases. We determine the exact ground states in several parameter regimes, and study the composite structures by using the generating function method generalized here to be applicable to a mixture of two species of spinor gases. The most interesting phase is the so-called entangled Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), whi…
Quantum simulation of spin models can provide insight into complex problems that are difficult or impossible to study with classical computers. Trapped ions are an established platform for quantum simulation, but only systems with fewer than 20 ions have demonstrated quantum correlations. Here we study non-equilibrium, quantum spin dynamics arising from an engineered, homogeneous Ising interaction in a two-dimensional array of $^9$Be$^+$ ions in a Penning trap. We verify entanglement in the form of spin-squeezed states for up to 219 ions, directly observing 4.0$\pm$0.9 dB of spectroscopic enha…
We demonstrate how dipolar interactions can have pronounced effects on the structure of vortices in atomic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates and illustrate generic physical principles that apply across dipolar spinor systems. We then find and analyze the cores of singular vortices with non-Abelian charges in the point-group symmetry of a spin-3 $^{52}$Cr condensate. Using a simpler model system, we analyze the underlying dipolar physics and show how a characteristic length scale arising from the magnetic dipolar coupling interacts with the hierarchy of healing lengths of the s-wave scattering, …
We examine spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in optical superlattices theoretically using a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian that takes spin effects into account. Assuming that a small number of spin-1 bosons is loaded in an optical potential, we study single-particle tunneling that occurs when one lattice site is ramped up relative to a neighboring site. Spin-dependent effects modify the tunneling events in a qualitative and quantitative way. Depending on the asymmetry of the double well different types of magnetic order occur, making the system of spin-1 bosons in an optical superlattice a model for …
We analyze the ground-state entanglement entropy of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with infinite-range interactions. This model describes the low-energy dynamics of ultracold bosons tightly bound to an optical lattice and dispersively coupled to a cavity mode. The competition between onsite repulsion and global cavity-induced interactions leads to a rich phase diagram, which exhibits superfluid, supersolid, and insulating (Mott and checkerboard) phases. We use a slave-boson treatment of harmonic quantum fluctuations around the mean-field solution and calculate the entanglement entropy across …

We explore the influence of contact interactions on a synthetically spin-orbit coupled system of two ultracold trapped atoms. Even though the system we consider is bosonic, we show that a regime exists in which the competition between the contact and spin-orbit interactions results in the emergence of a ground state that contains a significant contribution from the anti-symmetric spin state. This ground state is unique to few-particle systems and does not exist in the mean-field regime. The transition to this state is signalled by an inversion in the average momentum from being dominated by ce…
If the boundary conditions of the quantum vacuum are changed in time, quantum field theory predicts that real, observable particles can be created in the initially empty modes. Here, we realize this effect by changing the boundary conditions of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, which yields a population of initially unoccupied spatial and spin excitations. We prove that the excitations are created as entangled excitation pairs by certifying continuous-variable entanglement within the many-particle output state.
We present the quantum ground state properties of $^{23}$Na spinor condensates, which is confined in a periodic or double-well potential and subject to a magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between nearby wells. A novel singlet state arise in the system and can be discussed in explicit form. Caused by the competition between the intra-site spin exchange interactions and the inter-site dipole-dipole interactions, this quaternary-singlet\ state is a entangled state formed by at lest four particles and vanish the total spin. This is distinct from the direct product of the two conventional singlet …
We clarify the interplay and competition between disorder and flat band in the Creutz ladder with inter-particle interactions focusing on the system's dynamics. Without disorder, the Creutz ladder exhibits flat-band many-body localization (FMBL). In this work, we find that disorder generates drastic effects on the system, i.e., addition of it induces a thermal phase first and further increase of it leads the system to the conventional many-body-localized (MBL) phase. The competition gives novel localization properties and unconventional quench dynamics to the system. We first draw the global s…
We study a spinor (two-component) Bose gas confined in a one-dimensional double-valley optical lattice which has a double-well structure in momentum space. Based on field theory analysis, it is found that spinor bosons in the double-valley band may form a spin-charge mixed chiral spin quasicondensate under certain conditions. Our numerical calculations in a concrete $π$-flux triangular ladder system confirm the robustness of the chiral spin order against interactions and quantum fluctuations. This exotic atomic Bose-Einstein condensate exhibits spatially staggered spin loop currents without an…
