The Wishart model of random covariance or correlation matrices continues to find ever more applications as the wealth of data on complex systems of all types grows. The heavy tails often encountered prompt generalizations of the Wishart model, involving algebraic distributions instead of a Gaussian. The mathematical properties pose new challenges, particularly for the doubly correlated versions. Here we investigate such a doubly correlated algebraic model for real covariance or correlation matrices. We focus on the matrix moments and explicitly calculate the first and the second one, the computation of the latter is non-trivial. We solve the problem by relating it to the Aomoto integral and by extending the recursive technique to calculate Ingham-Siegel integrals. We compare our results with the Gaussian case.
Data sets collected at different times and different observing points can possess correlations at different times $and$ at different positions. The doubly correlated Wishart model takes both into account. We calculate the eigenvalue density of the Wishart correlation matrices using supersymmetry. In the complex case we obtain a new closed form expression which we compare to previous results in the literature. In the more relevant and much more complicated real case we derive an expression for the density in terms of a fourfold integral. Finally, we calculate the density in the limit of large c…
Wishart ensembles of random matrix theory have been useful in modeling positive definite matrices encountered in classical and quantum chaotic systems. We consider nonzero means for the entries of the constituting matrix A which defines the correlated Wishart matrix as W = AA†, and refer to the ensemble of such Wishart matrices as the non-central correlated Wishart ensemble (nc-CWE). We derive the Pastur self-consistent equation which describes the spectral density of nc-CWE at large matrix dimension.
We present an analytic method to determine spectral properties of the covariance matrices constructed of correlated Wishart random matrices. The method gives, in the limit of large matrices, exact analytic relations between the spectral moments and the eigenvalue densities of the covariance matrices and their estimators. The results can be used in practice to extract information about the genuine correlations from the given experimental realization of random matrices.
Wishart random matrix theory is of major importance for the analysis of correlated time series. The distribution of the smallest eigenvalue for Wishart correlation matrices is particularly interesting in many applications. In the complex and in the real case, we calculate it exactly for arbitrary empirical eigenvalues, i.e., for fully correlated Gaussian Wishart ensembles. To this end, we derive certain dualities of matrix models in ordinary space. We thereby completely avoid the otherwise unsurmountable problem of computing a highly non-trivial group integral. Our results are compact and much…
Using a character expansion method, we calculate exactly the eigenvalue density of random matrices of the form M^\dagger M where M is a complex matrix drawn from a normalized distribution P(M) ~ exp(-\Tr(A M B M^\dagger) with A and B positive definite (square) matrices of arbitrary dimensions. Such so-called ``correlated Wishart matrices'' occur in many fields ranging from information theory to multivariate analysis.
The correlated Wishart model provides a standard tool for the analysis of correlations in a rich variety of systems. Although much is known for complex correlation matrices, the empirically much more important real case still poses substantial challenges. We put forward a new approach, which maps arbitrary statistical quantities, depending on invariants only, to invariant Hermitian matrix models. For completeness we also include the quaternion case and deal with all three cases in a unified way. As an important application, we study the statistics of the largest eigenvalue and its limiting dis…
We discuss a practical method to determine the eigenvalue spectrum of the empirical correlation matrix. The method is based on the analysis of the behavior of a conformal map at a critical horizon which is defined as a border line of the physical Riemann sheet of this map. The map is a convenient representation of the Marčenko-Pastur equation.
For the correlated Gaussian Wishart ensemble we compute the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue and a related gap probability. We obtain exact results for the complex (β=2) and for the real case (β=1). For a particular set of empirical correlation matrices we find universality in the spectral density, for both real and complex ensembles and all kinds of rectangularity. We calculate the asymptotic and universal results for the gap probability and the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue. We use the Supersymmetry method, in particular the generalized Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation and…
We compare finite rank perturbations of the following three ensembles of complex rectangular random matrices: First, a generalised Wishart ensemble with one random and two fixed correlation matrices introduced by Borodin and Péché, second, the product of two independent random matrices where one has correlated entries, and third, the case when the two random matrices become also coupled through a fixed matrix. The singular value statistics of all three ensembles is shown to be determinantal and we derive double contour integral representations for their respective kernels. Three different kern…
The aim of this note is to provide a pedagogical survey of the recent works by the authors ( arXiv:1409.7548 and arXiv:1507.06013) concerning the local behavior of the eigenvalues of large complex correlated Wishart matrices at the edges and cusp points of the spectrum: Under quite general conditions, the eigenvalues fluctuations at a soft edge of the limiting spectrum, at the hard edge when it is present, or at a cusp point, are respectively described by mean of the Airy kernel, the Bessel kernel, or the Pearcey kernel. Moreover, the eigenvalues fluctuations at several soft edges are asymptot…
The correlated Wishart model provides the standard benchmark when analyzing time series of any kind. Unfortunately, the real case, which is the most relevant one in applications, poses serious challenges for analytical calculations. Often these challenges are due to square root singularities which cannot be handled using common random matrix techniques. We present a new way to tackle this issue. Using supersymmetry, we carry out an anlaytical study which we support by numerical simulations. For large but finite matrix dimensions, we show that statistical properties of the fully correlated real…
We study {the} complex eigenvalues of the Wishart model defined for nonsymmetric correlation matrices. The model is defined for two statistically equivalent but different Gaussian real matrices, as $\mathsf{C}=\mathsf{AB}^{t}/T$, where $\mathsf{B}^{t}$ is the transpose of $\mathsf{B}$ and both matrices $\mathsf{A}$ and $\mathsf{B}$ are of dimension $N\times T$. We consider {\it actual} correlations between the matrices so that on the ensemble average $\mathsf{C}$ does not vanish. We derive a loop equation for the spectral density of $\mathsf{C}$ in {the} large $N$ and $T$ limit where the ratio…
In the present work, eigenvalue distributions defined by a random rectangular matrix whose components are neither independently nor identically distributed are analyzed using replica analysis and belief propagation. In particular, we consider the case in which the components are independently but not identically distributed; for example, only the components in each row or in each column may be {identically distributed}. We also consider the more general case in which the components are correlated with one another. We use the replica approach while making only weak assumptions in order to deter…
We consider rectangular random matrices of size $p\times n$ belonging to the real Wishart-Laguerre ensemble also known as the chiral Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. This ensemble appears in many applications like QCD, mesoscopic physics, and time series analysis. We are particularly interested in the distribution of the smallest non-zero eigenvalue and the gap probability to find no eigenvalue in an interval $[0,t]$. While for odd topology $ν=n-p$ explicit closed results are known for finite and infinite matrix size, for even $ν>2$ only recursive expressions in $p$ are available. The smallest eig…
We compute the spectral statistics of the sum H of two independent complex Wishart matrices, each of which is correlated with a different covariance matrix. Random matrix theory enjoys many applications including sums and products of random matrices. Typically ensembles with correlations among the matrix elements are much more difficult to solve. Using a combination of supersymmetry, superbosonisation and bi-orthogonal functions we are able to determine all spectral k-point density correlation functions of H for arbitrary matrix size N. In the half-degenerate case, when one of the covariance m…
We derive exact results for gap probabilities, as well as densities of extreme eigenvalues for six complex random matrix ensembles of fundamental importance. These are Gauss-Wigner, Laguerre-Wishart, Cauchy-Lorentz (two variants), Jacobi-MANOVA and Bures-Hall (trace unrestricted). We deal with both correlated and uncorrelated cases. Extensive Monte-Carlo simulations based on explicit matrix models or Dyson's log-gas formalism have also been performed, which corroborate all analytical results.
We apply the concept of free random variables to doubly correlated (Gaussian) Wishart random matrix models, appearing for example in a multivariate analysis of financial time series, and displaying both inter-asset cross-covariances and temporal auto-covariances. We give a comprehensive introduction to the rich financial reality behind such models. We explain in an elementary way the main techniques of the free random variables calculus, with a view to promote them in the quantitative finance community. We apply our findings to tackle several financially relevant problems, such as of an univer…
Correlation matrices are a standard tool in the analysis of the time evolution of complex systems in general and financial markets in particular. Yet most analysis assume stationarity of the underlying time series. This tends to be an assumption of varying and often dubious validity. The validity of the assumption improves as shorter time series are used. If many time series are used this implies an analysis of highly singular correlation matrices. We attack this problem by using the so called {\it power map} which was introduced to reduce noise. Its non-linearity breaks the degeneracy of the …
We consider the complex eigenvalues of a Wishart type random matrix model $X=X_1 X_2^*$, where two rectangular complex Ginibre matrices $X_{1,2}$ of size $N\times (N+ν)$ are correlated through a non-Hermiticity parameter $τ\in[0,1]$. For general $ν=O(N)$ and $τ$ we obtain the global limiting density and its support, given by a shifted ellipse. It provides a non-Hermitian generalisation of the Marchenko-Pastur distribution, which is recovered at maximal correlation $X_1=X_2$ when $τ=1$. The square root of the complex Wishart eigenvalues, corresponding to the non-zero complex eigenvalues of the …
We study global fluctuations for singular values of $M$-fold products of several right-unitarily invariant $N \times N$ random matrix ensembles. As $N \to \infty$, we show the fluctuations of their height functions converge to an explicit Gaussian field, which is log-correlated for $M$ fixed and has a white noise component for $M \to \infty$ jointly with $N$. Our technique centers on the study of the multivariate Bessel generating functions of these spectral measures, for which we prove a central limit theorem for global fluctuations via certain conditions on the generating functions. We apply…
When dealing with non-stationary systems, for which many time series are available, it is common to divide time in epochs, i.e. smaller time intervals and deal with short time series in the hope to have some form of approximate stationarity on that time scale. We can then study time evolution by looking at properties as a function of the epochs. This leads to singular correlation matrices and thus poor statistics. In the present paper, we propose an ensemble technique to deal with a large set of short time series without any consideration of non-stationarity. Given a singular data matrix, we r…
