This work is a supplement on the previous research about primordial electromagnetic fields. In this work, three important problems are discussed: the evolution of primordial electric fields, the electric and particle densities' solitons in plasma before recombination and their influences on the power spectra of cosmic microwave background. Detailed computations show that the primordial electric fields dissipate by Landau damping effect on both large scale and small scale and there is no impact on the spectrum. While, before recombination, there exist solitary waves stably propagating in plasma whose speed is significantly slower than that of baryonic acoustic oscillations, working only at extremely small scale. On the other hand, the amplitude of solitons is so weak that only a significantly small contribution on the phase of baryon acoustic oscillations, so there merely exist the messages about such electric solitary waves on the spectrum. In a word, as relevant monographs on cosmology, neglecting the electromagnetic fields (electric fields at least) is a reasonable treatment on the calculations of cosmic microwave background. However, the protonic density fluctuations show a form of KdV equation while its propagation as a stable solitary wave, leading a probability to the origin of fluctuation promoting the generation and evolution of galaxies.
Astrophysical models of primordial star formation require rate constants for three-body recombination as input. The current status of these rates for H2 due to collisions with H is far from satisfactory, with published rate constants showing orders of magnitude disagreement at the temperatures relevant for H2 formation in primordial gas. This letter presents an independent calculation of this recombination rate constant as a function of temperature. An analytic expression is provided for the rate constant which should be more reliable than ones currently being used in astrophysical models.
We present a state-of-the-art primordial recombination code, HyRec, including all the physical effects that have been shown to significantly affect recombination. The computation of helium recombination includes simple analytic treatments of hydrogen continuum opacity in the He I 2 1P - 1 1S line, the He I] 2 3P - 1 1S line, and treats feedback between these lines within the on-the-spot approximation. Hydrogen recombination is computed using the effective multilevel atom method, virtually accounting for an infinite number of excited states. We account for two-photon transitions from 2s and hig…
Anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background are thought to be due to perturbations of the primordial medium, which, post recombination, lead to the formation of galaxy clusters and galaxies. Aims: We analyse the perturbation wave modes of the primordial medium at and before recombination, consisting of a fully ionized baryonic plasma, a strong black body radiation field, and cold dark matter. Methods: We use the linear perturbation theory of the relativistic equations of motion, utilising a strict thermodynamic equilibrium model that relates the radiation energy density to the plasma tempe…
We investigate the impact of a stochastic background of Primordial Magnetic Fields (PMF) generated before recombination on the ionization history of the Universe and on the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB). Pre-recombination PMFs are dissipated during recombination and reionization via decaying MHD turbulence and ambipolar diffusion. This modifies the local matter and electron temperatures and thus affects the ionization history and Thomson visibility function. We use this effect to constrain PMFs described by a spectrum of power-law type, extending our previous study (based on a sc…
We extensively reanalyze effects of a long-lived negatively charged massive particle, X-, on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The BBN model with an X- particle was originally motivated by the discrepancy between 6,7Li abundances predicted in standard BBN model and those inferred from observations of metal-poor stars. In this model 7Be is destroyed via the recombination with an X- particle followed by radiative proton capture. We calculate precise rates for the radiative recombinations of 7Be, 7Li, 9Be, and 4He with X-. In nonresonant rates we take into account respective partial waves of scatte…
The calculation of a highly accurate cosmological recombination history has been the object of particular attention recently, as it constitutes the major theoretical uncertainty when predicting the angular power spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies. Lyman transitions, in particular the Lyman-alpha line, have long been recognized as one of the bottlenecks of recombination, due to their very low escape probabilities. The Sobolev approximation does not describe radiative transfer in the vicinity of Lyman lines to a sufficient degree of accuracy, and several corrections have alread…
It is well known that recombination radiation of primordial hydrogen-helium plasma leads to the distortions of the planckian spectrum shape of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). We discuss the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect with taking into account primordial recombination radiation (PRR). Since in the thermal SZ effect the redistribution of the photons depends on the derivatives of the spectrum, the value of relative correction to SZ effect due to PRR significantly higher than relative corrections due to PRR in the initial spectrum. Calculations of corrections to the ther…
Cosmological constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies rely on accurate theoretical calculations of the cosmic recombination history. Recent work has emphasized the importance of radiative transfer calculations due to the high optical depth in the HI Lyman lines. Transfer in the Lyman-alpha line is dominated by true emission and absorption, Hubble expansion, and resonant scattering. Resonant scattering causes photons to diffuse in frequency due to random kicks from the thermal velocities of hydrogen atoms, and also to drift toward lower frequencies due to energy loss …
In this paper we refine the calculation of primordial helium recombination, accounting for several additional effects that were neglected or treated more approximately in previous studies. These include consideration of (i) time-dependent radiative transfer interaction between the 2^1 P_1 - 1^1 S_0 and 2^3 P_1 - 1^1 S_0 resonances; (ii) time-dependent radiative transfer for the partially overlapping n^1 P_1 - 1^1 S_0, n^1 D_2 - 1^1 S_0 and n^3 P_1 - 1^1 S_0 series with 3 <= n <= 10; (iii) electron scattering within a kernel approach. We also briefly discuss the effect of electron scattering an…
Cosmological hydrogen recombination has recently been the subject of renewed attention because of its importance for predicting the power spectrum of cosmic microwave background anisotropies. It has become clear that it is necessary to account for a large number n >~ 100 of energy shells of the hydrogen atom, separately following the angular momentum substates in order to obtain sufficiently accurate recombination histories. However, the multi-level atom codes that follow the populations of all these levels are computationally expensive, limiting recent analyses to only a few points in paramet…
As atoms formed for the first time during primordial recombination, they emitted bound-bound and free-bound radiation leading to spectral distortions to the cosmic microwave background. These distortions might become observable in the future with high-sensitivity spectrometers, and provide a new window into physical conditions in the early universe. The standard multilevel atom method habitually used to compute the recombination spectrum is computationally expensive, impeding a detailed quantitative exploration of the information contained in spectral distortions thus far. In this work it is s…
We consider a cosmological model with dark matter in the form of $\sim10^{-12}M_\odot$ primordial black holes in dense weakly relativistic clusters with masses $18-560M_\odot$. It is shown that during the multiple collisions of the black holes the $\sim10$\% of the initial cluster mass can be transformed into gravitational waves in the time interval from recombination to the redshifts $z\geq 10$. At the recombination epoch, the density of matter was larger by $\sim10$\% and, accordingly, the universe expansion rate was higher. This leads to a shortening of the sound horizon scale, as is necess…
One of the important light elements created during the big bang nucleosynthesis is Be-7 which then decays to Li-7 by electron capture when recombination becomes effective but well before the Saha equilibrium recombination is reached. This means that Be-7 should wait until its recombination epoch even though the half-life of the hydrogenic beryllium atom is only 106.4 days. We calculate when the conversion from primordial Be-7 to Li-7 occurs taking into account the population of the hyperfine structure sublevels and solving the kinetic equations for recombination, photoionization and conversion…
In the pre-recombination era, cosmological density fluctuations can naturally generate magnetic fields through Thomson scatterings. In previous studies, only the magnetic field generation from the initially-adiabatic fluctuations has been considered. Here we investigate the generation of cosmological magnetic fields sourced by the primordial non-adiabatic fluctuations based on the cosmological perturbation theory, using the tight-coupling approximations between photon and baryon fluids. It is found that the magnetic fields from the non-adiabatic fluctuations can arise at the first-order expans…
Exotic electromagnetic energy injection in the early Universe may alter cosmological recombination, and ultimately cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. Moreover, if energy injection is inhomogeneous, it may induce a spatially-varying ionization fraction, and non-Gaussianity in the CMB. The observability of these signals, however, is contingent upon how far the injected particles propagate and deposit their energy into the primordial plasma, relative to the characteristic scale of energy injection fluctuations. In this study we inspect the spatial properties of energy deposition and …
We revisit the method of using the photon-graviton conversion mechanism in the presence of the external magnetic field to probe small-scale primordial magnetic fields that may exist between the last scattering surface and present. Specifically, we investigate impacts on the conversion efficiency due to the presence of matter, including the plasma collective effect and the atomic polarizability. In general, these effects tend to reduce the conversion probability. Under this more realistic picture and based on the precision of COBE's measurement of CMB (cosmic microwave background) blackbody spe…
Standard big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) predicts only a trace abundance of lithium and no heavier elements, but some alternatives predict a nonzero primordial metallicity. Here we explore whether CMB measurements may set useful constraints to the primordial metallicity and/or whether the standard CMB calculations are robust, within the tolerance of forthcoming CMB maps, to the possibility of primordial metals. Metals would affect the recombination history (and thus CMB power spectra) in three ways: (1) Lyman-alpha photons can be removed (and recombination thus accelerated) by photoionizing met…
Primordial magnetic fields (PMFs), being present before the epoch of cosmic recombination, induce small-scale baryonic density fluctuations. These inhomogeneities lead to an inhomogeneous recombination process that alters the peaks and heights of the large-scale anisotropies of the cosmic microwave backround (CMB) radiation. Utilizing numerical compressible MHD calculations and a Monte Carlo Markov chain analysis, which compares calculated CMB anisotropies with those observed by the \textit{WMAP} and \textit{Planck} satellites, we derive limits on the magnitude of putative PMFs. We find that t…
Primordial magnetic fields generated in the very early universe are one of the candidates for the origin of magnetic fields observed in galaxy clusters. After recombination, the Lorentz force acts on the residual ions and electrons to generate density fluctuations of baryons. Accordingly these fluctuations induce the early formation of dark halos which cause the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (S-Z) effect in cosmic microwave background radiation. This additional S-Z effect due to primordial magnetic fields amplifies the angular power spectrum of cosmic microwave temperature anisotropies on small scales. T…
The origin of large magnetic fields in the Universe remains currently unknown. We investigate here a mechanism before recombination based on known physics. The source of the vorticity is due to the changes in the photon distribution function caused by the fluctuations in the background photons. We show that the magnetic field generated in the MHD limit, due to the Coulomb scattering, is of the order $10^{-49}$~G on a coherence scale of 10 kpc. We explicitly show that the magnetic fields generated from this process are sustainable and are not erased by resistive diffusion. We compare the result…
It is shown that small-scale magnetic fields present before recombination induce baryonic density inhomogeneities of appreciable magnitude. The presence of such inhomogeneities changes the ionization history of the Universe, which in turn decreases the angular scale of the Doppler peaks and increases Silk damping by photon diffusion. This unique signature could be used to (dis)prove the existence of primordial magnetic fields of strength as small as B~10^(-11) Gauss by upcoming cosmic microwave background observations.
The origin of cosmic magnetic fields is an unsolved problem and magnetogenesis could have occurred in the early Universe. We study the evolution of such primordial magnetic fields across the cosmological recombination epoch via 3D magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations. We compute the effective or net heating rate of baryons due to decaying magnetic fields and its dependence on the magnetic field strength and spectral index. In the drag-dominated regime ($z \gtrsim 1500$), prior to recombination, we find no real heating is produced. Our simulations allow us to smoothly trace a new transitio…
Searches for primordial gravitational waves have resulted in constraints in a large frequency range from a variety of sources. The standard Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) technique is to parameterise the tensor power spectrum in terms of the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, and spectral index, $n_{\rm t}$, and constrain these using measurements of the temperature and polarization power spectra. Another method, applicable to modes well inside the cosmological horizon at recombination, uses the shortwave approximation, under which gravitational waves behave as an effective neutrino species. In th…
Resonant conversion of high energy gravitons into photons in large scale cosmological magnetic fields at the post recombination epoch is considered. It is shown that the probability of the resonance photon production is much higher than the non-resonant one. As a result an observable isotropic background of cosmic gamma rays might be created. As shown in our previous paper, an early population of primordial black holes (PBHs) prior to big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) could be an efficient source of high frequency gravitational waves. For the primordial black hole mass about $10^8$ g the produced…
The effect of primordial magnetic fields on X-ray or S-Z galaxy cluster survey is investigated. After recombination, the primordial magnetic fields generate additional density fluctuations. Such density fluctuations enhance the number of galaxy clusters. Taking into account the density fluctuations generated by primordial magnetic fields, we calculate the number of galaxy clusters based on the Press-Schechter formalism. Comparing with the results of Chandra X-ray galaxy cluster survey, we found that the existence of primordial magnetic fields with amplitude larger than 10 nGuass would be incon…
Recent observations of magnetic fields in intergalactic void regions and in high redshift galaxies may indicate that large scale magnetic fields have a primordial origin. If primordial magnetic fields were present soon after the recombination epoch, they would have induced density fluctuations on the one hand and dissipated their energy into the primordial gas on the other, and thereby significantly alter the thermal history of the Universe. Here we consider both the effects and calculate the brightness temperature fluctuations of the 21cm line using simple Monte Carlo simulations. We find tha…
Magnetic fields appear to be present in all galaxies and galaxy clusters. Recent measurements indicate that a weak magnetic field may be present even in the smooth low density intergalactic medium. One explanation for these observations is that a seed magnetic field was generated by some unknown mechanism early in the life of the Universe, and was later amplified by various dynamos in nonlinear objects like galaxies and clusters. We show that a primordial magnetic field is expected to be generated in the early Universe on purely linear scales through vorticity induced by scale-dependent temper…
A rapid and relatively simple scheme of calculation is elaborated and applied to cosmological recombination of helium. Employing the nonrelativistic Coulomb Green's function, a wavefunction of a colliding electron is represented in an integral form applicable for calculations. Bound electrons of helium are described by the Hartree-Fock wavefunctions. The free-bound transition probabilities into excited states of helium, and the probabilities of bound-bound transitions in helium are calculated in different modes. It is revealed that free-bound transition probabilities weakly depend on to what e…
Cosmic strings are a type of cosmic defect formed by a symmetry-breaking phase transition in the early universe. Individual strings would have gathered to build a network, and their dynamical motion would induce scalar--, vector-- and tensor--type perturbations. In this paper, we focus on the vector mode perturbations arising from the string network based on the one scale model and calculate the time evolution and the power spectrum of the associated magnetic fields. We show that the relative velocity between photon and baryon fluids induced by the string network can generate magnetic fields o…
The origin of astrophysical magnetic fields observed in galaxies and clusters of galaxies is still unclear. One possibility is that primordial magnetic fields generated in the early Universe provide seeds that grow through compression and turbulence during structure formation. A cosmological magnetic field present prior to recombination would produce substantial matter clustering at intermediate/small scales, on top of the standard inflationary power spectrum. In this work we study the effect of this alteration on one particular cosmological observable, cosmic shear. We adopt the semi-analytic…
We present the constraints on the amplitude of magnetic fields generated prior to the recombination using CMB temperature and polarization anisotropy data from Planck 2018 release, alone and in combination with those from BICEP2/Keck array and the South Pole Telescope. We model the fields with a generic parametrization and we make no assumptions on their origin in order to provide general constraints on their characteristics. The analysis updates the former corresponding Planck 2015 results both on data and numerical implementation. We then perform forecasts for the next generation of CMB expe…
This work presents a Bayesian algorithm to fit the recombination and collisionally excited line spectra of gas photoionized by clusters of young stars. The current model consists in fourteen dimensions: two electron temperatures, one electron density, the extinction coefficient, the optical depth on the $HeI$ recombination lines and nine ionic species. The results are in very good agreement with those previously published using the traditional methodology. The probabilistic programming library PyMC3 was chosen to explore the parameter space via a NUTs sampler. These machine learning tools prov…
The Hubble tension that the standard $Λ$CDM model is suffering from can be resolved with pre-recombination early dark energy. We present the first constraint on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ in corresponding Hubble-tension-free cosmologies using the most recent BICEP/Keck cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode polarization data. We find, combining BICEP/Keck with Planck18 CMB and baryon acoustic oscillation data, that the models with larger Hubble constant $H_0$ will have tighter upper bound on $r$, and resolution $H_0\sim73$ km/s/Mpc of the Hubble tension tightens the upper bound to $r<0.0…
We demonstrate how to obtain optimal constraints on a primordial gravitational wave component in lensed Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data under ideal conditions. We first derive an estimator of the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, by using an error-controlled close approximation to the exact posterior, under the assumption of Gaussian primordial CMB and lensing deflection potential. This combines fast internal iterative lensing reconstruction with optimal recovery of the unlensed CMB. We evaluate its performance on simulated low-noise polarization data targeted at the recombination peak. We c…

Here I discuss the conversion of relic gravitons into photons in large scale cosmological magnetic fields. It is shown that the conversion probability is quite large at the post recombination epoch with a rather large density of formed photons. The produced electromagnetic radiation could make a substantial contribution to the cosmic extragalactic background light and even explain the cosmic x ray background excess.
The standard cosmological model determined from the accurate cosmic microwave background measurements made by the Planck satellite implies a value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ that is $4.2$ standard deviations lower than the one determined from Type Ia supernovae. The Planck best fit model also predicts higher values of the matter density fraction $Ω_m$ and clustering amplitude $S_8$ compared to those obtained from the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 data. Here we show that accounting for the enhanced recombination rate due to additional small-scale inhomogeneities in the baryon density may solve bo…
We update and extend our previous CMB anisotropy constraints on primordial magnetic fields through their dissipation by ambipolar diffusion and MHD decaying turbulence effects on the post-recombination ionization history. We derive the constraints using the latest Planck 2018 data release which improves on the E-mode polarization leading to overall tighter constraints with respect to Planck 2015. We also use the low-multipole E-mode polarization likelihood obtained by the SROLL2 map making algorithm and we note how it is compatible with larger magnetic field amplitudes than the Planck 2018 bas…
We explore the linearly quantised primordial power spectra associated with palindromic universes. Extending the results of Lasenby et al. [1] and Bartlett et al. [2], we improve the modelling of recombination and include higher orders in the photonic Boltzmann hierarchy. In so doing, we find that the predicted power spectra become largely consistent with observational data. The improved recombination modelling involves developing further techniques for dealing with the future conformal boundary, by integrating the associated perturbation equations both forwards and backwards in conformal time.…
We review important reactions in the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) model involving a long-lived negatively charged massive particle, $X^-$, which is much heavier than nucleons. This model can explain the observed $^7$Li abundances of metal-poor stars, and predicts a primordial $^9$Be abundance that is larger than the standard BBN prediction. In the BBN epoch, nuclei recombine with the $X^-$ particle. Because of the heavy $X^-$ mass, the atomic size of bound states $A_X$ is as small as the nuclear size. The nonresonant recombination rates are then dominated by the $d$-wave $\rightarrow$ 2P tra…
Magnetic fields appear everywhere in the universe. From stars and galaxies, all the way to galaxy clusters and remote protogalactic clouds magnetic fields of considerable strength and size have been repeatedly observed. Despite their widespread presence, however, the origin of cosmic magnetic fields is still a mystery. The galactic dynamo is believed capable of amplifying weak magnetic seeds to strengths like those measured in ours and other galaxies, but the question is where do these seed fields come from? Are they a product of late, post-recombination, physics or are they truly cosmological…
We consider gravitational radiation and electromagnetic radiation from point mass binary with electric charges in a Keplerian orbit, and calculate the merger rate distribution of primordial black hole binaries with charges and a general mass function by taking into account gravitational torque and electromagnetic torque by the nearest primordial black hole. We apply the formalism to the extremal charged case and find that $α=-(m_i+m_j)^2\partial^2 \ln {\cal R}(m_i,m_j)/\partial m_i \partial m_j=12/11$, which is independent of the mass function.
We study how the presence of a background magnetic field, of intensity compatible with current observation constraints, affects the linear evolution of cosmological density perturbations at scales below the Hubble radius. The magnetic field provides an additional pressure that can prevent the growth of a given perturbation; however, the magnetic pressure is confined only to the plane orthogonal the field. As a result, the "Jeans length" of the system not only depends on the wavelength of the fluctuation but also on its direction, and the perturbative evolution is anisotropic. We derive this re…
The observed amount of lithium for low metallicity population II stars (known as the Spite plateau) is a factor of $\sim 3-5$ lower than the predictions of the standard cosmology. Since the observations are limited to the local Universe (halo stars, globular clusters and satellites of the Milky Way) it is possible that certain physical processes may have led to the spatial separation of lithium and local reduction of [Li/H]. We study the question of lithium diffusion after the cosmological recombination in sub-Jeans dark matter haloes, taking into account that more than 95% of lithium remains …
Non-thermal photons deriving from radiative transitions among the internal ladder of atoms and molecules are an important source of photons in addition to thermal and stellar sources in many astrophysical environments. In the present work the calculation of reaction rates for the direct photodissociation of some molecules relevant in early Universe chemistry is presented; in particular, the calculations include non-thermal photons deriving from the recombination of primordial hydrogen and helium atoms for the cases of H2, HD and HeH+. New effects on the fractional abundances of chemical specie…
Silk damping of primordial small-scale perturbations in the photon-baryon fluid due to diffusion of photons inevitably creates spectral distortions in the CMB. With the proposed CMB experiment PIXIE it might become possible to measure these distortions and thereby constrain the primordial power spectrum at comoving wavenumbers 50 Mpc^{-1} < k < 10^4 Mpc^{-1}. Since primordial fluctuations in the CMB on these scales are completely erased by Silk damping, these distortions may provide the only way to shed light on otherwise unobservable aspects of inflationary physics. A consistent treatment of …
Primordial black hole (PBH) dark matter (DM) nonlinear small-scale structure formation begins before the epoch of recombination due to large Poisson density fluctuations. Those small-scale effects still survive today, distinguishing physics of PBH DM structure formation from the one involving WIMP DM. We construct an analytic model for the small-scale PBH velocities that reproduces the velocity floor seen in numerical simulations, and investigate how these motions impact PBH accretion bounds at different redshifts. We find that the effect is small at the time of recombination, leaving the cosm…
We provide a simple but robust bound on the primordial curvature perturbation in the range $10^4 {\rm Mpc}^{-1} < k < 10^5 {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, which has not been constrained so far unlike low wavenumber modes. Perturbations on these scales dissipate the energy of their acoustic oscillations by the Silk damping after primordial nucleosynthesis but before the redshift $z \sim 2 \times 10^6$ and reheat the photon bath without invoking CMB distortions. This {\it acoustic reheating} results in the decrease of the baryon-photon ratio. By combining independent measurements probing the nucleosynthesis er…
Cosmological models can be constrained by determining primordial abundances. Accurate predictions of the He I spectrum are needed to determine the primordial helium abundance to a precision of $< 1$% in order to constrain Big Bang Nucleosynthesis models. Theoretical line emissivities at least this accurate are needed if this precision is to be achieved. In the first paper of this series, which focused on H I, we showed that differences in $l$-changing collisional rate coefficients predicted by three different theories can translate into 10% changes in predictions for H I spectra. Here we consi…
We quantitatively study how the primordial density fluctuations are imprinted on the anisotropy of the phase transition gravitational wave (PTGW). Generated long before recombination and free from Silk damping, the anisotropic PTGW might reveal the density perturbation seeded from inflation or alternatives. We find new behaviors of the PTGW anisotropy power spectrum. The PTGW anisotropy is stronger than the anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background temperature at all scales, and the high-$\ell$ multiples are enhanced about 1 order due to the early integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. Furthermore…
