We classify the necessary and sufficient conditions to obtain the near-horizon geometry of extremal supersymmetric rotating black holes embedded in 11d supergravity. Such rotating black holes admit an AdS$_2$ near-horizon geometry which is fibered by the transverse spacetime directions. Despite their clear interest to understanding the entropy of rotating black holes, these solutions have evaded all previous supersymmetric classification programs due to the non-trivial fibration structure. In this paper we allow for the most general fibration over AdS$_2$ with a flux configuration permitting rotating M2-branes. Using G-structure techniques we rewrite the conditions for supersymmetry in terms of differential equations on an eight-dimensional balanced space. The 9d compact internal space is a U$(1)$-fibration over this 8d base. The geometry is constrained by a master equation reminiscent of the one found in the non-rotating case. We give a Lagrangian from which the equations of motion may be derived, and show how the asymptotically AdS$_4$ electrically charged Kerr-Newman black hole in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity is embedded in the classification. In addition, we present the conditions for the near-horizon geometry of rotating black strings in Type IIB by using dualities with the 11d setup.
The isometries of $AdS_5$ space and supersymmetric $AdS_5\otimes S_1$ space are nonlinearly realized on four dimensional Minkowski space. The resultant effective actions in terms of the Nambu-Goldstone modes are constructed. The dilatonic mode governing the motion of the Minkowski space probe brane into the covolume of supersymmetric $AdS_5$ space is found to be unstable and the bulk of the $AdS_5$ space is unable to sustain the brane. No such instablility appears in the non-supersymmetric case.
We present a new supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of type IIB supergravity with SU(2) isometry. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence, this has potentially very interesting implications for 5d fixed point theories. This solution is the result of a non-Abelian T-duality on the known supersymmetric AdS_6 solution of massive IIA. The SU(2) R-symmetry is untouched, leading to sixteen supercharges and preserved supersymmetry.
Motivated by the AdS_6/CFT_5 correspondence, we study general supersymmetric solutions of massive type IIA supergravity, consisting of a warped product of six-dimensional anti-de Sitter space AdS_6 with a four-dimensional Riemannian manifold M_4, and fluxes compatible with the SO(5,2) symmetry. We find that the only local solution of this form is the warped AdS_6 x_w S^4 solution, originally discovered by Brandhuber and Oz. We discuss the supersymmetric properties of this solution.
In this note we show that the entropy of BPS, rotating, electrically charged AdS$_7 \times S^4$ black holes can be obtained by an extremization principle involving a particular combination of anomaly coefficients of the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (2, 0)$ theory. This result extends our previous finding for BPS, rotating AdS$_5 \times S^5$ black holes.
Supersymmetric black holes in AdS spacetime are inherently interesting for the AdS/CFT correspondence. Within a four dimensional gauged supergravity theory coupled to vector multiplets, the only analytic solutions for regular, supersymmetric, static black holes in AdS4 are those in the STU-model due to Cacciatori and Klemm. We study a class of U(1)-gauged supergravity theories coupled to vector multiplets which have a cubic prepotential, the scalar manifold is then a very special Kahler manifold. When the resulting very special Kahler manifold is a homogeneous space, we find analytic solutions…
In six- and seven-dimensional gauged supergravity, each scalar potential has one supersymmetric and one non-supersymmetric fixed points. The non-supersymmetric $AdS_7$ fixed point is perturbatively unstable. On the other hand, the non-supersymmetric $AdS_6$ fixed point is known to be perturbatively stable. In this note we examine the newly proposed non-perturbative decay channel, called brane-jet instabilities of the $AdS_6$ and $AdS_7$ vacua. We find that when they are uplifted to massive type IIA and eleven-dimensional supergravity, respectively, the non-supersymmetric $AdS_6$ and $AdS_7$ va…
It has recently been conjectured that string theory does not admit de Sitter critical points. This note points out that in several cases, including KKLT or racetrack models, this statement is equivalent to the absence of supersymmetric Minkowski or AdS solutions. This equivalence arises from establishing the positivity of the potential in a large-radius limit, requiring a turnover of the potential before reaching an AdS vacuum. For example, this conjecture is incompatible with the simplest 1-modulus KKLT AdS supersymmetric solution.
We present new supersymmetric AdS_3 solutions of type IIB supergravity and AdS_2 solutions of D=11 supergravity. The former are dual to conformal field theories in two dimensions with N=(0,2) supersymmetry while the latter are dual to conformal quantum mechanics with two supercharges. Our construction also includes AdS_2 solutions of D=11 supergravity that have non-compact internal spaces which are dual to three-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories coupled to point-like defects. We also present some new bubble-type solutions, corresponding to BPS states in conformal theories, that pre…
We examine the behaviour of Killing spinors on AdS5 under various discrete symmetries of the spacetime. In this way we discover a number of supersymmetric orbifolds, reproducing the known ones and adding a few novel ones to the list. These orbifolds break the SO(4,2) invariance of AdS5 down to subgroups. We also make some comments on the non-compact Stiefel manifold W{4,2}.
We construct new families of non-supersymmetric sourceless type IIA AdS4 vacua on those coset manifolds that also admit supersymmetric solutions. We investigate the spectrum of left-invariant modes and find that most, but not all, of the vacua are stable under these fluctuations. Generically, there are also no massless moduli.
Employing uplift formulae, we uplift supersymmetric $AdS_6$ black holes from $F(4)$ gauged supergravity to massive type IIA and type IIB supergravity. In massive type IIA supergravity, we obtain supersymmetric $AdS_6$ black holes asymptotic to the Brandhuber-Oz solution. In type IIB supergravity, we obtain supersymmetric $AdS_6$ black holes asymptotic to the non-Abelian T-dual of the Brandhuber-Oz solution. For the uplifted black hole solutions, we calculate the holographic entanglement entropy. In massive type IIA supergravity, it precisely matches the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black …
We deform the AdS/CFT Correspondence by the inclusion of a non-supersymmetric scalar mass operator. We discuss the behaviour of the dual 5 dimensional supergravity field then lift the full solution to 10 dimensions. Brane probing the resulting background reveals a potential consistent with the operator we wished to insert.
We consider computational complexity of AdS_5 black holes. Our system contains a particle moving on the boundary of AdS. This corresponds to the insertion of a fundamental string in AdS_5 bulk spacetime. Our results give a constraint for complexity. This gives us a hint for defining complexity in quantum field theories.
We study solutions for rigidly rotating strings on AdS$_4 \times$ CP$^3$ in the presence of $B_{\rm NS}$ holonomy turned on over $CP^1 \subset CP^3$. We construct general solutions for rotating strings with two and three angular momenta in $CP^3$ and discuss various limits corresponding to giant magnon and spike like solutions.
We determine the supersymmetric AdS_7 backgrounds of seven-dimensional half-maximal gauged supergravities and show that they do not admit any deformations that preserve all 16 supercharges. We compare this result to the conformal manifold of the holographically dual (1,0) superconformal field theories and show that accordingly its representation theory implies that no supersymmetric marginal operators exist.
The AdS/dCFT correspondence is used to show that a planar q-dimensional superconformal CFT defect expands, under the addition of electric charge and angular momentum, to a supersymmetric higher-dimensional defect of geometry R^q x C, where C is an arbitrary curve. The dual string theory process is the expansion of D-branes and fundamental strings into a supertube in an AdS background.
We examine the AdS/CFT correspondence through a manifestly 5D supersymmetric formalism, corresponding to a 4D N=1 supersymmetric CFT. We find that the dimensions of scalar and fermionic component operators are simply related, and that there is a smooth transition of scalar operator dimensions through the value d_s = 2. By using this formalism, we also show that the formula used in the string literature for the dimension of fermion operators is incomplete.
We identify a large family of 1/16 BPS operators in N=4 SYM that qualitatively reproduce the relations between charge, angular momentum and entropy in regular supersymmetric AdS_5 black holes when the main contribution to their masses is given by their angular momentum.
We present a family of N=1 supersymmetric backgrounds in type-IIA supergravity and their lifts to eleven-dimensional supergravity. These are of the form $AdS_5 \times X^5$ and are characterised by an $SU(2)$ structure. The internal space, $X^5$, is obtained from the known Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, $Y^{p,q}$, via an application of non-Abelian T-duality.
We study AdS backgrounds of N=4 supergravity in four space-time dimensions which preserve all sixteen supercharges. We show that the graviphotons have to form a subgroup of the gauge group that consists of an electric and a magnetic SO(3)_+ x SO(3)_-. Moreover, these N=4 AdS backgrounds are necessarily isolated points in field space which have no moduli.
In this thesis we study maximally supersymmetric solutions of gauged supergravity theories, with special focus on anti-de Sitter solutions. The latter are relevant in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the first part we classify all maximally supersymmetric solutions of all gauged or deformed supergravity theories in $D \geq 3$ space-time dimensions. In the second part we exclusively study maximally supersymmetric AdS$_D$ solutions of gauged supergravities in dimensions $D \geq 4$. We discuss the structure of the allowed gauge groups as well as possible supersymmetry preserving defo…
We consider two infinite families of Non-Supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacua, called Type 2) and Type 3) vacua, that arise in massive IIA supergravity with flux. We show that both families are perturbatively stable. We then examine non-perturbative decays of these vacua to other supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacua mediated by instantons in the thin wall approximation. We find that many decays are ruled out since the tension of the interpolating domain wall is too big compared to the energy difference in AdS units. In fact, within our approximations no decays of Type 2) vacua are allow…
We show that general N=2 supersymmetric AdS_4 solutions of M-theory with non-zero M2-brane charge admit a canonical contact structure. The free energy of the dual superconformal field theory on S^3 and the scaling dimensions of operators dual to supersymmetric wrapped M5-branes are expressed via AdS/CFT in terms of contact volumes. In particular, this leads to topological and localization formulae for the coefficient of N^{3/2} in the free energy of such solutions.
AdS/CFT is a conjectured equivalence between a field theory without gravity (conformal field theory) and a string theory in a special curved background (anti de-Sitter space), where theories on both sides of the equivalence is supersymmetric. Since the nature as we observe at low energy is non-supersymmetric, it will be very useful if we can have this conjecture in the non-supersymmetric case. Here we will give some evidence that AdS/CFT type duality must work for non-supersymmetric system. We will indicate some calculation which leads us to such conclusion.
The unitarity of the NS supersymmetric coset SL(2,R)/U(1) is studied for the discrete representations. The results are applied to the proof of the no-ghost theorem for fermionic strings in AdS(3) x N in the NS sector. A no-ghost theorem is proved for states in flowed discrete representations.
Recently, entropy of static supersymmetric black holes in $AdS_6$ was microscopically counted by the topologically twisted index of five-dimensional superconformal field theories. However, the AdS/CFT dictionary states that the partition function of the boundary field theory corresponds to the on-shell action of the bulk quantum gravity. In this paper, we aim to explain the microscopic counting of black hole entropy by the topologically twisted index. We calculate the renormalized on-shell action and show that the on-shell action equals the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the supersymmetric blac…
Semi-classical soliton solutions for superstrings in $AdS_5\times S^5$ are used to predict the dimension of gauge theory operators in $\N=4 $ SU(N) SYM theory. We discuss the possible origin of scaling violations on the gauge theory side.
Rotating IIB strings in AdS_5 x S^5 become ultra-relativistic, and hence effectively tensionless, in the limit of large angular momentum on S^5. We have shown previously that such tensionless strings may preserve supersymmetry. Here we extend this result to include a class of supersymmetric tensionless strings with arbitrary SO(6) angular momentum. We close with some general comments on tensionless strings in AdS_5 x S^5.
We find the space-time supersymmetric and kappa-invariant action for a D3-brane propagating in the AdS_5 x S^5 background. As in the previous construction of the fundamental string action in this maximally supersymmetric string vacuum the starting point is the corresponding superalgebra su(2,2|4). We comment on the super Yang-Mills interpretation of the gauge-fixed form of the action.
We show that there exist supersymmetric Lifshitz vacua in off-shell Einstein-Weyl supergravity, in addition to the BPS AdS_4 vacuum. The Lifshitz exponents are determined by the product of the cosmological constant and the coupling of the Weyl-squared term. We then obtain the equations of the supersymmetric solutions that are asymptotic to the AdS or Lifshitz vacua. We obtain many examples of exact solutions as well as numerical ones. We find examples of extremal AdS black branes whose near-horizon geometry is AdS_2\times T^2. We also find an extremal Lifshitz black hole with z=-2, whose horiz…
It has been proven in arXiv:1303.0853 that all regular supersymmetric near-horizon geometries in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity admit automatic supersymmetry enhancement. Using this result, the integrability conditions associated with the existence of the additional supersymmetry are analysed, and the near-horizon geometries are determined explicitly. We show that they all correspond to previously constructed examples. Hence, there are no supersymmetric black ring solutions in minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity.
We study rigidly rotating strings in the $\varkappa$-deformed $AdS_3 \times S^3$ background. We find out two classes of solutions corresponding to the giant magnon and single spike solutions of the string rotating in two $S^2_{\varkappa}$ subspace of rotations reduced along two different isometries. We verify that the dispersion relations reduce to the well known relation in the $\varkappa\rightarrow 0$ limit. We further study some oscillating string solutions in the $S^3_{\varkappa}$ subspace.
We study supersymmetric $AdS_3\times Σ_2$ and $AdS_2\times Σ_3$ solutions, with $Σ_2=S^2,H^2$ and $Σ_3=S^3,H^3$, in five-dimensional $N=4$ gauged supergravity coupled to five vector multiplets. The gauge groups considered here are $U(1)\times SU(2)\times SU(2)$, $U(1)\times SO(3,1)$ and $U(1)\times SL(3,\mathbb{R})$. For $U(1)\times SU(2)\times SU(2)$ gauge group admiting two supersymmetric $N=4$ $AdS_5$ vacua, we identify a new class of $AdS_3\times Σ_2$ and $AdS_2\times H^3$ solutions preserving four supercharges. Holographic RG flows describing twisted compactifications of $N=2$ four-dimens…
We formulate gauge invariant interactions of totally symmetric tensor and tensor-spinor higher spin gauge fields in AdS(5) that properly account for higher-spin-gravitational interactions at the action level in the first nontrivial order.
We compute holographic complexity for the non-supersymmetric Janus deformation of AdS$_5$ according to the volume conjecture. The result is characterized by a power-law ultraviolet divergence. When a ball-shaped region located around the interface is considered, a sub-leading logarithmic divergent term and a finite part appear in the corresponding subregion volume complexity. Using two different prescriptions to regularize the divergences, we find that the coefficient of the logarithmic term is universal.
In this paper we study supersymmetric field theories on an AdS_p x S^q space-time that preserves their full supersymmetry. This is an interesting example of supersymmetry on a non-compact curved space. The supersymmetry algebra on such a space is a (p-1)-dimensional superconformal algebra, and we classify all possible algebras that can arise for p >= 3. In some AdS_3 cases more than one superconformal algebra can arise from the same field theory. We discuss in detail the special case of four dimensional field theories with N=1 and N=2 supersymmetry on AdS_3 x S^1.
Five-dimensional stringy rotating black holes are embedded into N=2 supergravity interacting with one vector multiplet. The existence of an unbroken supersymmetry of the rotating solution is proved directly by solving the Killing spinor equations. The asymptotic enhancement of supersymmetry near the horizon in the presence of rotation is established via the calculation of the super-curvature. The area of the horizon of the rotating supersymmetric black holes is found to be $\sqrt {Z_{fix}^{3 }- J^2}$, where $Z_{fix}$ is the extremal value of the central charge in moduli space.
We probe the AdS/CFT correspondence by comparing the thermodynamics of a rotating black hole in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with that of a conformal field theory on $S^3$, whose parameters come from the boundary of spacetime. In the high temperature limit, we find agreement between gauge theory and gravity in all thermodynamic quantities upto the same factor of 4/3 that appears for nonrotating holes.
We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to argue that large rotating black holes in global AdS(D) spaces are dual to stationary solutions of the relativistic Navier-Stokes equations on S**(D-2). Reading off the equation of state of this fluid from the thermodynamics of non-rotating black holes, we proceed to construct the nonlinear spinning solutions of fluid mechanics that are dual to rotating black holes. In all known examples, the thermodynamics and the local stress tensor of our solutions are in precise agreement with the thermodynamics and boundary stress tensor of the spinning black holes. Our…
It is shown that a class of rotating strings in AdS_5 x S^5 with SO(6) angular momenta (J,J',J') preserve 1/8-supersymmetry for large J,J', in which limit they are effectively tensionless; when J=0, supersymmetry is enhanced to 1/4. These results imply that recent checks of the AdS/CFT correspondence actually test a nearly-BPS sector.
We find various supersymmetric configurations of toroidal M2 brane solutions in $\AdS_4 \times S^7$ or, more generally, in $\AdS_4 \times S^7/Z_k$. In this class we identify solutions preserving 1/4 and 1/8 supersymmetries of the background. The supersymmetric M2 branes have angular momenta and winding on $S^7$, and null world-volumes. In certain cases they collapse to string-like configurations. These configurations can be viewed as a higher-dimensional (membrane) analog of BMN states. We compute the energy and angular momenta, showing that all supersymmetric configurations obey the BPS relat…
For every positively curved Kahler-Einstein manifold in four dimensions we construct an infinite family of supersymmetric solutions of type IIB supergravity. The solutions are warped products of AdS_3 with a compact seven-dimensional manifold and have non-vanishing five-form flux. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, the solutions are dual to two-dimensional conformal field theories with (2,0) supersymmetry. The corresponding central charges are rational numbers.
We point out that pure supergravity theories in $AdS$ with enough supersymmetry lead, upon taking the large radius limit, to flat space quantum gravities with a nonperturbatively exact global symmetry, and are therefore in the Swampland. The argument applies to any $AdS$ supergravity with gauged R-symmetry group, including truncations of most well known examples, such as $AdS_5$ without the $S^5$ or $AdS_4$ without the $S^7$. This demonstrates that extreme scale separation, at least with enough supersymmetry, is not realizable. Moreover pure $AdS$ theories are also in conflict with some other …
We show that generic supersymmetric AdS_5 solutions of type IIB supergravity admit a canonical contact structure. This structure determines the central charge of the dual field theory and the conformal dimension of operators dual to supersymmetric wrapped D3-branes. Hence both quantities can be calculated using incomplete information about the solutions, allowing us to prove that they are rational numbers for solutions with a U(1) R-symmetry, in agreement with field theory expectations. We also discuss related Duistermaat-Heckman integrals and localization formulae.
Supersymmetric zero-brane and one-brane probes in the squashed $AdS_2\times S^3$ near-horizon geometry of the BMPV black hole are studied. Supersymmetric zero-brane probes stabilized by orbital angular momentum on the $S^3$ are found and shown to saturate a BPS bound. We also find supersymmetric one-brane probes which have momentum and winding around a $U(1)_L\times U(1)_R$ torus in the $S^3$ and in some cases are static.
We classify supersymmetric warped AdS$_3 \times_w M_7$ backgrounds of Type IIA and Type IIB supergravity with non-constant dilaton, generic RR fluxes and magnetic NSNS flux, in terms of a dynamic $SU(3)$-structure on $M_7$. We illustrate our results by recovering several solutions with various amounts of supersymmetry. The dynamic $SU(3)$-structure includes a $G_2$-structure as a limiting case, and we show that in Type IIB this is integrable.
We study the leading $α^\prime$ corrections to the entropy of certain black holes with AdS$_5\times S^5$ asymptotics. We find that, in the supersymmetric limit, the entropy does not receive $α^\prime$ corrections. This result strengthens recent calculations that match the index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills with the corresponding partition function in the supersymmetric limit. In the small temperature regime, we find that the entropy corrections are concordant with the weak gravity conjecture.
We discuss infinite families of non-supersymmetric AdS$_6$ solutions in Type IIB string theory. They are siblings of supersymmetric solutions which are associated with $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs and holographically dual to 5d SCFTs engineered by those brane webs. The non-supersymmetric backgrounds carry identical 5-brane charges and are connected to the supersymmetric ones by RG flows. We study the stability of the non-supersymmetric solutions, identifying perturbative and non-perturbative decay channels for all the backgrounds explicitly available. We also identify likely decay mechanisms for solut…
We show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a class of BPS electrically charged rotating black holes in AdS$_5\times S^5$ can be obtained by a simple extremization principle. We expect that this extremization corresponds to the attractor mechanism for BPS rotating black holes in five-dimensional gauged supergravity, which is still unknown. The expression to be extremized has a suggestive resemblance to anomaly polynomials and the supersymmetric Casimir energy recently studied for $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills.
A new supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black hole solution of five-dimensional U(1)^3 gauged supergravity is presented. All known examples of such black holes arise as special cases of this solution, which is characterized by three charges and two angular momenta, with one constraint relating these five quantities. Analagous solutions of U(1)^n gauged supergravity are also presented.
We analyse the most general bosonic supersymmetric solutions of type IIB supergravity whose metrics are warped products of five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space (AdS$_5$) with a five-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M_{5}$, where the five-form flux vanishes, while all remaining fluxes are allowed to be non-vanishing consistent with SO(4,2) symmetry. This completes the program of classifying all supersymmetric solutions of ten and eleven-dimensional supergravity with an AdS$_5$ factor. We investigate the supersymmetry conditions in some special cases, and demonstrate how these are satisfied by …
A comparison is made between the thermodynamics of weakly and strongly coupled Yang-Mills with fixed angular momentum. The free energy of the strongly coupled Yang-Mills is calculated by using a dual supergravity description corresponding to a rotating black hole in an Anti de Sitter (AdS) background. All thermodynamic quantities are shown have the same ratio of 3/4 (independent of angular momentum) between strong and weak coupling.
Rotating charged Gauss-Bonnet black hole solutions in higher dimensional ($d >4$), asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime are obtained in the small angular momentum limit. The angular momentum, magnetic dipole moment, and the gyromagnetic ratio of the black holes are calculated and it turns out that the Gauss-Bonnet term does not affect to the gyromagnetic ratio.
We study fully supersymmetric $AdS_6$ vacua of half-maxi\-mal $N=(1,1)$ gauged supergravity in six space-time dimensions coupled to $n$ vector multiplets. We show that the existence of $AdS_6$ backgrounds requires that the gauge group is of the form $G'\times G"\subset SO(4,n)$ where $G'\subset SO(3,m)$ and $G"\subset SO(1,n-m)$. In the $AdS_6$ vacua this gauge group is broken to its maximal compact subgroup $SO(3)\times H'\times H"$ where $H'\subset SO(m)$ and $H"\subset SO(n-m)$. Furthermore, the $SO(3)$ factor is the R-symmetry gauged by three of the four graviphotons. We further show that …
In this paper, we study the spin chain and string excitation in the rotating Rindler-$AdS_3$ proposed in [12]. We obtain a one-parameter deformed $SL(2)$ spin chain at the fast spin limit. Two-spin GKP-like solutions are studied at short and long string limits. General ansatz for the giant magnons and the spiky strings are analyzed in detail for various $β$. At last, we explore its counterpart in analytic continuation and pp-wave limit.
