Macroscopic cosmic antimatter objects are predicted in baryonasymmetrical Universe in the models of strongly nonhomogeneousbaryosynthesis. We test the hypothesis of the existence of an oldglobular cluster of anti-stars in the galactic halo by evaluating theflux of helium anti-nuclei in galactic cosmic rays. Due to the symme-try of matter and antimatter we assume that the antimatter clusterevolves in a similar way as a matter cluster. The energy density ofantiparticles in galactic cosmic rays from antimatter globular clusteris estimated. We propose a method for the propagation of a fluxof antinuclei in a galactic magnetic field from the globular cluster ofantistars in the Galaxy.
Models of highly inhomogeneous baryosynthesis of the baryonic asymmetric Universe allow for the existence of macroscopic domains of antimatter, which could evolve in a globular cluster of antimatter stars in our Galaxy. We assume the symmetry of the evolution of a globular cluster of stars and antistars based on the symmetry of the properties of matter and antimatter. Such object can be a source of a fraction of antihelium nuclei in galactic cosmic rays. It makes possible to predict the expected fluxes of cosmic antinuclei with use of known properties of matter star globular clusters We have e…
Terzan 5 is the only Galactic globular cluster that has plausibly been detected in the very-high-energy range. Stacking upper limits by H.E.S.S. on the integral $γ$-ray flux of a population of other globular clusters are very constraining for leptonic cluster emission models. We demonstrate that uncertainty in model parameters leads to a large spread in the predicted flux, and there are indeed regions in parameter space for which the stringent stacking upper limits are satisfied. We conduct two more case studies: we study the uncertainties in differential TeV flux for M15, showing that our mod…
Globular clusters are large collections of old stars that are orbiting the core of a galaxy. Our Milky Way Galaxy has about 160 known clusters, with perhaps more to be discovered. We first accumulated the necessary parameters for 16 clusters and ran a numerical model that predicts the inverse Compton gamma-ray flux expected from each cluster. We also reanalysed data from 16 clusters observed by the H.E.S.S. very-high-energy (> 100 GeV) gamma-ray telescopes. We confirmed the detection of Terzan 5 and found flux upper limits for the remaining 15 sources that were consistent with published result…
The recent Fermi detection of the globular cluster (GC) 47 Tucanae highlighted the importance of modeling collective gamma-ray emission of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in GCs. Steady flux from such populations is also expected in the very high energy (VHE) domain covered by ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. We present pulsed curvature radiation (CR) as well as unpulsed inverse Compton (IC) calculations for an ensemble of MSPs in the GCs 47 Tucanae and Terzan 5. We demonstrate that the CR from these GCs should be easily detectable for Fermi, while constraints on the total number of MSPs and the …
Nearby gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are likely to have represented a significant threat to life on the Earth. Recent observations suggest that a significant source of such bursts is compact binary mergers in globular clusters. This link between globular clusters and GRBs offers the possibility to find time intervals in the past with higher probabilities of a nearby burst, by tracing globular cluster orbits back in time. Here we show that the expected flux from such bursts is not flat over the past 550 Myr but rather exhibits three broad peaks, at 70, 180 and 340 Myr ago. The main source for nearby …
In recent years, space-born experiments have delivered new measurements of high energy cosmic-ray (CR) $\bar p$ and $e^+$. In addition, unprecedented sensitivity to CR composite anti-nuclei anti-d and anti-He is expected to be achieved in the near future. We report on the theoretical interpretation of these measurements. While CR antimatter is a promising discovery tool for new physics or exotic astrophysical phenomena, an irreducible background arises from secondary production by primary CR collisions with interstellar matter. Understanding this irreducible background or constraining it from …
Globular clusters are source of gamma-ray radiation. At GeV energies, their emission is attributed to magnetospheric activity of millisecond pulsars residing in the clusters. Inverse Compton scattering of ambient photon fields on relativistic particles diffusing through cluster environment is thought to be the source of GeV-TeV emission of globular clusters. Using pair starved polar cap model gamma-ray emission from synthetic millisecond pulsar was modelled. In addition to pulsar emission characteristics, the synthetic pulsar model yielded spectra of electrons escaping pulsar magnetosphere. To…
The millisecond pulsar PSR J1740-5340 in the globular cluster NGC 6397 shows radio eclipses over ~40% of its binary orbit. A first Chandra observation revealed indications for the X-ray flux being orbit dependent as well. In this work we analysed five data sets of archival Chandra data taken between 2000 and 2007 in order to investigate the emission across the pulsar's binary orbit. Utilizing archival Chandra observations of PSR J1740-5340, we have performed a systematic timing and spectral analysis of this binary system. Using a chi-square-test the significance for intra-binary orbital modula…
47 Tuc was the first globular cluster observed to be $γ$-ray bright, with the $γ$-rays being attributed to a population of unresolved millisecond pulsars (MSPs). Recent kinematic data, combined with detailed simulations, appears to be consistent with the presence of an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH) at the centre of 47 Tuc. Building upon this, we analyse 9 years of \textit{Fermi}-LAT observations to study the spectral properties of 47 Tuc with unprecedented accuracy and sensitivity. This 9-year $γ$-ray spectrum shows that 47 Tuc's $γ$-ray flux cannot be explained by MSPs alone, due to a s…
Using a 16.2 hr radio observation by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and archival Chandra data, we found $>5σ$ radio counterparts to 4 known and 3 new X-ray sources within the half-light radius ($r_\mathrm{h}$) of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397. The previously suggested millisecond pulsar (MSP) candidate, U18, is a steep-spectrum ($S_ν\propto ν^α$; $α=-2.0^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$) radio source with a 5.5 GHz flux density of $54.7\pm 4.3~\mathrm{μJy}$. We argue that U18 is most likely a "hidden" MSP that is continuously hidden by plasma shocked at the collision between the winds fro…
The GAPS experiment is designed to carry out a sensitive dark matter search by measuring low-energy cosmic ray antideuterons and antiprotons. GAPS will provide a new avenue to access a wide range of dark matter models and masses that is complementary to direct detection techniques, collider experiments and other indirect detection techniques. Well-motivated theories beyond the Standard Model contain viable dark matter candidates which could lead to a detectable signal of antideuterons resulting from the annihilation or decay of dark matter particles. The dark matter contribution to the antideu…
We present results from an emission code that assumes millisecond pulsars (MSPs) to be sources of relativistic particles in globular clusters (GCs) and models the resulting spectral energy distribution (SED) of Galactic GCs due to these particle's interaction with the cluster magnetic and soft-photon fields. We solve a transport equation for leptons and calculate inverse Compton (IC) and synchrotron radiation (SR) to make predictions for the flux expected from Galactic GCs. We perform a parameter study and also constrain model parameters for three GCs using gamma-ray and X-ray data. We next st…
Terzan 5 is a Galactic globular cluster exhibiting prominent X-ray and gamma-ray emission. Following the discovery of extended X- ray emission in this object, we explore here archival data at several wavelengths for other unexpected emission features in the vicinity of this globular cluster. Radio data from the Effelsberg 100 metre telescope show several extended structures near Terzan 5, albeit with large uncertainties in the flux estimates and no reliable radio spectral index. In particular, a radio source extending from the location of Terzan 5 to the north-west could result from long-term …
In the third Fermi catalogue (3FGL) there are sixteen gamma-ray globular clusters. After analyzing the recent released Pass 8 data of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), we report the discovery of significant gamma-ray emission from M 15 and NGC 6397, confirm that NGC 5904 is a gamma-ray emitter and find evidence of gamma-ray emission from NGC 6218 and NGC 6139. Inter- estingly, in the globular clusters M 15, NGC 6397 and NGC 5904, millisecond pulsars (MSPs) have been found in radio or X-rays, which are strongly in support of the MSP origin of the gamma-ray emission. However, due to the relative…
Millisecond pulsars occur abundantly in globular clusters. They are expected to be responsible for several spectral components in the radio through gamma-ray waveband (e.g., involving synchrotron and inverse Compton emission), as have been seen by Radio Telescope Effelsberg, Chandra X-ray Observatory, Fermi Large Area Telescope, and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in the case of Terzan 5 (with fewer spectral components seen for other globular clusters). H.E.S.S. has recently performed a stacking analysis involving 15 non-detected globular clusters and obtained quite constraining…
In this paper we discuss the luminosity modulations and spectral analysis results of the recent deep observations of XMMU 122939.7+075333, the first black hole discovered in a globular cluster. The source has been detected many times, typically with L$_X$ > 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, but in a 2010 observation had faded to L$_X$ ~ 10$^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. In our 2011 observations, it has rebrightened to L$_X$ ~ 2x10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This significant increase in luminosity over a a relatively short time period is not consistent with the idea that the long term flux modulations displayed by XMMU …
Globular clusters (GCs) are established emitters of high-energy (HE, 100 MeV<E<100 GeV) γ-ray radiation which could originate from the cumulative emission of the numerous millisecond pulsars (msPSRs) in the clusters' cores or from inverse Compton (IC) scattering of relativistic leptons accelerated in the GC environment. GCs could also constitute a new class of sources in the very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) γ-ray regime, judging from the recent detection of emission from the direction of Terzan 5 with the H.E.S.S. telescope array. To search for VHE γ-ray sources associated with other GCs, and…
Diffuse X-ray emission has recently been detected from the globular cluster (GC) Terzan 5, extending out to ~2.5' from the cluster centre. This emission may arise from synchrotron radiation (SR) by energetic leptons being injected into the cluster by the resident millisecond pulsar (MSP) population that interact with the cluster field. These leptons may also be reaccelerated in shocks created by collisions of pulsar winds, and may interact with bright starlight and cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons, yielding gamma rays at very high energies (VHE) through the inverse Compton (IC) proces…
Studies of the Galactic population of radio pulsars have shown that their luminosity distribution appears to be log-normal in form. We investigate some of the consequences that occur when one applies this functional form to populations of pulsars in globular clusters. We use Bayesian methods to explore constraints on the mean and standard deviation of the luminosity function, as well as the total number of pulsars, given an observed sample of pulsars down to some limiting flux density, accounting for measurements of flux densities of individual pulsars as well as diffuse emission from the dire…
We present the results of long-term monitoring of the X-ray emission from the ultraluminous X-ray source XMMUJ122939.9+075333 in the extragalactic globular cluster RZ2109. The combination of the high X-ray luminosity, short term X-ray variability, X-ray spectrum, and optical emission suggest that this system is likely an accreting black hole in a globular cluster. To study the long-term behavior of the X-ray emission from this source, we analyze both new and archival Chandra and XMM-Newton observations, covering 16 years from 2000 to 2016. For all of these observations, we fit extracted spectr…
We present the results of new X-ray observations of XMMU 122939.7+075333, the black hole (BH) in the globular cluster RZ 2109 in the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC 4472. A combination of non-detections and marginal detections in several recent Swift and Chandra observations show that the source has varied by at least a factor of 20 in the past 6 years, and that the variations seem not just to be "flickering." This variation could be explained with changes in the absorption column intrinsic to the source no larger than those which were previously seen near the peak of the 1989 outburst of the Galacti…
We have systematically studied the X-ray emission properties of globular cluster millisecond pulsars in order to evaluate their spectral properties and luminosities in a uniform way. Cross-correlating the radio timing positions of the cluster pulsars with the high resolution Chandra images revealed 31 X-ray counterparts identified in nine different globular cluster systems, including those in 47 Tuc. Timing analysis has been performed for all sources corresponding to the temporal resolution available in the archival Chandra data. Making use of unpublished data on M28, M4 and NGC 6752 allowed u…
The luminosity distribution of Galactic radio pulsars is believed to be log-normal in form. Applying this functional form to populations of pulsars in globular clusters, we employ Bayesian methods to explore constraints on the mean and standard deviation of the function, as well as the total number of pulsars in the cluster. Our analysis is based on an observed number of pulsars down to some limiting flux density, measurements of flux densities of individual pulsars, as well as diffuse emission from the direction of the cluster. We apply our analysis to Terzan 5 and demonstrate, under reasonab…
Radio continuum observations offer a new window on compact objects in globular clusters compared to typical X-ray or optical studies. As part of the MAVERIC survey, we have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array to carry out a deep (median central noise level of approximately 4 microJy per beam) radio continuum survey of 26 southern globular clusters at central frequencies of 5.5 and 9.0 GHz. This paper presents a catalogue of 1285 radio continuum sources in the fields of these 26 clusters. Considering the surface density of background sources, we find significant evidence for a population…
IGRJ17361-4441 is a hard transient recently observed by the INTEGRAL satellite. The source, close to the center of gravity of the globular cluster NGC 6388, quickly became the target of follow-up observations conducted by the Chandra, Swift/XRT and RXTE observatories. Here, we concentrate in particular on a set of observations conducted by the XMM-Newton satellite during two slews, in order to get the spectral information of the source and search for spectral variations. The spectral parameters determined by the recent XMM-Newton slew observations were compared to the previously known results.…
We report the discovery of a new ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) associated with a globular cluster in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4649. The X-ray source was initially detected with a luminosity below 5 x 10^38 erg/s, but in subsequent observations 7 and 11 years later it had brightened substantially to 2 - 3 x 10^39 erg/s. Over the course of six separate observations it displayed significant spectral variability, in both continuum slope and absorption column. Short-term variability in the X-ray flux was also present in at least one observation. The properties of this object appear consistent w…
Using archival spectral-imaging data with a total exposure of $\sim144$ ks obtained by {\it Chandra}, 43 X-ray sources are detected within the half-light radius of globular cluster M62 (NGC6266). Based on the X-ray colour-luminosity diagram or the positional coincidences with known sources, we have classified these sources into different groups of compact binaries including cataclysmic variable (CV), quiescent low mass X-ray binary (qLMXB), millisecond pulsar (MSP) and black hole (BH). Candidates of the X-ray counterparts of 12 CVs, 4 qLMXBs, 2 MSPs and 1 BH are identified in our analysis. The…
We present an analysis of 745.6 ks of archival Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer data accumulated between 2000 and 2016 of the millisecond pulsar (MSP) population in the rich Galactic globular cluster Terzan 5. Eight of the 37 MSPs with precise positions are found to have plausible X-ray source matches. Despite the deep exposure, the remaining MSPs are either marginally detected or have no obvious X-ray counterparts, which can be attributed to the typically soft thermal spectra of rotation-powered MSPs, which are strongly attenuated by the high intervening absorbing c…
We report on the quiescent X-ray properties of the recently discovered transiently accreting 11 Hz X-ray pulsar in the globular cluster Terzan 5. Using two archival Chandra observations, we demonstrate that the quiescent spectrum of this neutron star low-mass X-ray binary is soft and can be fit to a neutron star atmosphere model with a temperature of kT^inf~73 eV. A powerlaw spectral component is not required by the data and contributes at most ~20% to the total unabsorbed 0.5-10 keV flux of ~9E-14 erg/cm2/s. Such a soft quiescent spectrum is unusual for neutron stars with relatively high infe…
RZ2109 is the first of several extragalactic globular clusters shown to host an ultraluminous X-ray source. RZ2109 is particularly notable because optical spectroscopy shows it has broad, luminous [OIII] 4959,5007 emission, while also having no detectable hydrogen emission. The X-ray and optical characteristics of the source in RZ2109 make it a good candidate for being a stellar mass black hole accreting from a white dwarf donor (i.e. an ultracompact black hole X-ray binary). In this paper we present optical spectroscopic monitoring of the [OIII]5007 emission line from 2007 to 2018. We find th…
Observations of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), which contains at least 23 millisecond pulsars, were performed with the H.E.S.S. telescope system. The observations lead to an upper limit of F(E>800 GeV) < 6.7e-13 / cm^2 s on the integral gamma-ray photon flux from 47 Tucanae. Considering millisecond pulsars as the unique potential source of gamma-rays in the globular cluster, constraints based on emission models are derived: on the magnetic field in the average pulsar nebula and on the conversion efficiency of spin-down power to gamma-ray photons or to relativistic leptons.
We present a multi-band search for X-ray, optical and $γ$-ray emission of the radio binary millisecond pulsar J1836-2354A, hosted in the globular cluster M22. X-ray emission is significantly detected in two Chandra observations, performed in 2005 and 2014, at a luminosity of $\sim$2-3$\times$10$^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$, in the 0.5-8 keV energy range. The radio and the X-ray source positions are found consistent within 1$σ$ error box. No detection is found in archival XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT observations, compatible with the Chandra flux level. The low statistics prevents us to assess if the X-ray …
Terzan 5, a globular cluster (GC) prominent in mass and population of compact objects, is searched for diffuse X-ray emission, as proposed by several models. We analyzed the data of an archival Chandra observation of Terzan 5 to search for extended diffuse X-ray emission outside the half-mass radius of the GC. We removed detected point sources from the data to extract spectra from diffuse regions around Terzan 5. The Galactic background emission was modeled by a 2-temperature thermal component, which is typical for Galactic diffuse emission. We detected significant diffuse excess emission abov…
We identify 233 X-ray sources, of which 95 are new, in a 222 ks exposure of Omega Centauri with the Chandra X-ray Observatory's ACIS-I detector. The limiting unabsorbed flux in the core is $f_x$ (0.5$-$6.0 keV) $\simeq$ 3 $\times$ 10$^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ ($L_X$ $\simeq$ 1 $\times$ 10$^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at 5.2 kpc). We estimate that ~$60\pm 20$ of these are cluster members, of which ~30 lie within the core ($r_c$ $=$ 155 arcsec), and another ~30 between 1$-$2 core radii. We identify four new optical counterparts, for a total of 45 likely identifications. Probable cluster members incl…

Recent observations by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) have revealed globular clusters (GC) to be sources of high-energy (HE) and very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-rays. It has been suggested that the presence of large numbers of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) within these clusters may be either directly responsible for these gamma-ray fluxes through emission of pulsed curvature radiation, or indirectly through the injection of relativistic leptons into the cluster. These relativistic particles are plausibly re-accelerated in shocks, created by th…
We examined 134 Chandra observations of the population of X-ray sources associated with globular clusters (GCs) in the central region of M31. These are expected to be X-ray binary systems (XBs), consisting of a neutron star or black hole accreting material from a close companion. We created long-term lightcurves for these sources, correcting for background, interstellar absorption and instrumental effects. We tested for variability by examining the goodness of fit for the best fit constant intensity. We also created structure functions (SFs) for every object in our sample, the first time this …
It was proposed that the central dense stellar cluster in the Galactic Center, containing the mass of $\sim$4 times larger than that of the central black hole, had been formed as a result of a merging of several massive globular clusters. These globular clusters are expected to provide a large number of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) within the central parsec of the Galactic Center. We propose that the GeV $γ$-ray emission observed from the Galactic Center is in fact a cumulative effect of the emission from several globular clusters captured by the Galactic Center black hole. Moreover, the millise…
We present a recent Chandra observation of the quiescent low-mass X-ray binary containing a neutron star, located in the globular cluster M30. We fit the thermal emission from the neutron star to extract its mass and radius. We find no evidence of flux variability between the two observations taken in 2001 and 2017, nor between individual 2017 observations, so we analyse them together to increase the signal to noise. We perform simultaneous spectral fits using standard light-element composition atmosphere models (hydrogen or helium), including absorption by the interstellar medium, correction …
Cosmic ray antiprotons provide an important probe for the study of cosmic-ray propagation in the interstellar space and to investigate the existence of Galactic dark matter. The ARGO-YBJ experiment, located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (Tibet, P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l., 606 g/cm$^2$), is the only experiment exploiting the full coverage approach at very high altitude presently at work. The ARGO-YBJ experiment is particularly effective in measuring the cosmic ray antimatter content via the observation of the cosmic rays Moon shadowing effect. Based on all the data recorded during the …
Hundreds of stellar-mass black holes likely form in a typical globular star cluster, with all but one predicted to be ejected through dynamical interactions. Some observational support for this idea is provided by the lack of X-ray-emitting binary stars comprising one black hole and one other star ("black-hole/X-ray binaries") in Milky Way globular clusters, even though many neutron-star/X-ray binaries are known. Although a few black holes have been seen in globular clusters around other galaxies, the masses of these cannot be determined, and some may be intermediate-mass black holes that form…
In this paper we discuss the X-ray point source population of NGC 4472, an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. We used recent deep Chandra data combined with archival Chandra data to obtain a 380 ks exposure time. We find 238 X-ray point sources within 3.7' of the galaxy centre, with a completeness flux, F(X,0.5-2 keV)= 6.3x$10^{-16}$ $erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}$. Most of these sources are expected to be low mass X-ray binaries. We finding that, using data from a single galaxy which is both complete and has a large number of objects (~ 100) below 10$^{38}$ $erg s^{-1}$, the X-ray luminosity functi…
A population of globular clusters (GCs) has been recently established by the Fermi-LAT telescope as a new class of GeV $γ$-ray sources. Leptons accelerated to TeV energies, in the inner magnetospheres of MSPs or in their wind regions, should produce $γ$-rays through the inverse Compton scattering in the dense radiation field from the huge population of stars. We have conducted deep observations of the globular cluster M15 with the MAGIC telescopes and used 165 hrs in order to search for $γ$-ray emission. A strong upper limit on the TeV $γ$-ray flux $<3.2\times 10^{-13}\mathrm{cm^{-2}s^{-1}}$ a…
Antimatter nuclei in cosmic rays (CR) represent a promising discovery channel for the indirect search of dark matter. We present astrophysical background calculations of CR antideuteron ($\overline{d}$) and antihelium ($\overline{He}$). These particles are produced by high-energy collisions of CR protons and nuclei with the gas nuclei of the interstellar medium. In our calculations, we also consider production and shock acceleration of antinuclei in the shells of supernova remnants (SNRs). The total flux of $\overline{d}$ and $\overline{He}$ particles is constrained using new AMS measurements …
Globular clusters contain a unique pulsar population, with many exotic systems that can form only in their dense stellar environments. The leap in sensitivity of the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) in India, especially at low radio frequencies ($<$ 1 GHz) has motivated a new search for radio pulsars in a group of eight Southern globular clusters. We discovered PSR J1835$-$3259B, a 1.83-ms pulsar in NGC 6652; this is in a near-circular wide orbit of 28.7 hr with a low-mass ($ \sim 0.2 \, M_{\rm \odot}$) companion, likely a Helium white dwarf. We derived a 10-year timing solutio…
This thesis work is focused on the study of millisecond pulsars in globular cluster by using multi-wavelength observations obtained with radio and optical telescopes. Radio observations have been used to search for and timing the pulsars. While classical search routines are based on the analysis of single and long time sequence of data, we present here an alternative method. This method exploits the large amount of available archival radio data to search for very faint pulsars by stacking all the daily power spectra. This method led to the discovery of three new pulsars in the stellar system T…
Cosmic ray antiprotons provide an important probe to study the cosmic ray propagation in the interstellar space and to investigate the existence of dark matter. Acting the Earth-Moon system as a magnetic spectrometer, paths of primary antiprotons are deflected in the opposite sense with respect to those of the protons in their way to the Earth. This effect allows, in principle, the search for antiparticles in the direction opposite to the observed deficit of cosmic rays due to the Moon (the so-called `Moon shadow'). The ARGO-YBJ experiment, located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (Tibe…
We present the discovery and characterization of a radio-bright binary in the Galactic globular cluster M10. First identified in deep radio continuum data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, M10-VLA1 has a flux density of $27\pm4$ $μ$Jy at 7.4 GHz and a flat to inverted radio spectrum. Chandra imaging shows an X-ray source with $L_X \approx 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ matching the location of the radio source. This places M10-VLA1 within the scatter of the radio--X-ray luminosity correlation for quiescent stellar-mass black holes, and a black hole X-ray binary is a viable explanation for this …
We analyze a ~70 ksec Chandra ACIS-I exposure of the globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139). The ~17 amin x 17 amin field of view fully encompasses three core radii and almost twice the half-mass radius. We detect 180 sources to a limiting flux of ~4.3x10^-16 erg/cm^2/s (Lx = 1.2x10^30 erg/s at 4.9 kpc). After accounting for the number of active galactic nuclei and possible foreground stars, we estimate that 45-70 of the sources are cluster members. Four of the X-ray sources have previously been identified as compact accreting binaries in the cluster--three cataclysmic variables (CVs) and …
In this article, we revisit the gamma-ray emission observed from millisecond pulsars and globular clusters. Based on 5.6 years of data from the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, we report gamma-ray spectra for 61 millisecond pulsars, finding most to be well fit by a power-law with an exponential cutoff, producing to a spectral peak near ~1-2 GeV (in $E^2 dN/dE$ units). Additionally, while most globular clusters exhibit a similar spectral shape, we identify a few with significantly softer spectra. We also determine the gamma-ray luminosity function of millisecond pulsars using the population fou…
We report the discovery of a candidate stellar-mass black hole in the Milky Way globular cluster M62. We detected the black hole candidate, which we term M62-VLA1, in the core of the cluster using deep radio continuum imaging from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. M62-VLA1 is a faint source, with a flux density of 18.7 +/- 1.9 microJy at 6.2 GHz and a flat radio spectrum (alpha=-0.24 +/- 0.42, for S_nu = nu^alpha). M62 is the second Milky Way cluster with a candidate stellar-mass black hole; unlike the two candidate black holes previously found in the cluster M22, M62-VLA1 is associated wit…
We study the prospects for detecting the annihilation products of Dark Matter [DM] in the framework of the two highest-resolution numerical simulations currently available, i.e. {\it Via Lactea II} and {\it Aquarius}. We propose a strategy to determine the shape and size of the region around the Galactic center that maximizes the probability of observing a DM signal, and we show that although the predicted flux can differ by a factor of 10 for a given DM candidate in the two simulation setups, the search strategy remains actually unchanged, since it relies on the angular profile of the annihil…
If millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are responsible for the excess gamma-ray emission observed from the region surrounding the Galactic Center, the same region should also contain a large population of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). In this study, we compile and utilize a sizable catalog of LMXBs observed in the the Milky Way's globular cluster system and in the Inner Galaxy, as well as the gamma-ray emission observed from globular clusters, to estimate the flux of gamma rays predicted from MSPs in the Inner Galaxy. From this comparison, we conclude that only up to $\sim$4-23% of the observed gamm…
