We consider the implications of an ultra-light fermionic dark matter candidate that carries baryon number. This naturally arises if dark matter has a small charge under standard model baryon number whilst having an asymmetry equal and opposite to that in the visible universe. A prototypical model is a theory of dark baryons of a non-Abelian gauge group, i.e., a dark Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD). For sub-eV dark baryon masses, the inner region of dark matter halos is naturally at 'nuclear density', allowing for the formation of exotic states of matter, akin to neutron stars. The Tremaine-Gunn lower bound on the mass of fermionic dark matter, i.e., the dark baryons, is violated by the strong short-range self-interactions, cooling via emission of light dark pions, and the Cooper pairing of dark quarks that occurs at densities that are high relative to the (ultra-low) dark QCD scale. We develop the astrophysics of these STrongly-interacting Ultra-light Millicharged Particles (STUMPs) utilizing the equation of state of dense quark matter, and find halo cores consistent with observations of dwarf galaxies. These cores are prevented from core-collapse by pressure of the 'neutron star', which suggests ultra-light dark QCD as a resolution to core-cusp problem of collisionless cold dark matter. The model is distinguished from ultra-light bosonic dark matter through direct detection and collider signatures, as well as by phenomena associated with superconductivity, such as Andreev reflection and superconducting vortices.
We derive novel constraints on millicharged dark matter and ultralight axion-like particles using pulsar timing and fast radio burst observations. Millicharged dark matter affects the dispersion measure of the time of arrival of radio pulses in a way analogous to free electrons. Light pseudo-scalar dark matter, on the other hand, causes the polarization angle of radio signals to oscillate. We show that current and future data can set strong constraints in both cases. For dark matter particles of charge $εe$, these constraints are $ε/{m_{\rm milli}} \lesssim 10^{-8}{\rm eV}^{-1}$, for masses $m…
We identify potentially the world's most sensitive location to search for millicharged particles in the 10 MeV to 100 GeV mass range: the forward region at the LHC. We propose constructing a scintillator-based experiment, FORward MicrOcharge SeArch (FORMOSA) in this location, and estimate the corresponding sensitivity projection. We show that FORMOSA can discover millicharged particles in a large and unexplored parameter space, and study strongly interacting dark matter that cannot be detected by ground-based direct-detection experiments. The newly proposed LHC Forward Physics Facility (FPF) p…
After a brief review of different types of scenarios suggested for the solution of the problem of galactic and intergalactic magnetic field generation, the mechanism based on the electric current induction by hypothetical millicharged particles interacting with electrons in cosmic medium is discussed. The proposed model successfully describes observational data. The new light millicharged particles can contribute from a small fraction up to 100% to the cosmological dark matter.
A small fraction of millicharged dark matter (DM) is considered in the literature to give an interpretation about the enhanced 21-cm absorption at the cosmic dawn. Here we focus on the case that the main component of DM is self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), motivated by the small scale problems. For self interactions of SIDM being compatible from dwarf to cluster scales, velocity-dependent self interactions mediated by a light scalar $ϕ$ is considered. To fermionic SIDM $Ψ$, the main annihilation mode $Ψ\barΨ \to ϕϕ$ is a $p -$wave process. The thermal transition of SIDM $\rightleftarrows ϕ\…
Ultralight axions (ULAs) are promising dark matter candidates that can have a distinct impact on the formation and evolution of structure on nonlinear scales relative to the cold, collisionless dark matter (CDM) paradigm. However, most studies of structure formation in ULA models do not include the effects of self-interactions, which are expected to arise generically. Here, we study how the tidal evolution of solitons is affected by ULA self-interaction strength and sign. Specifically, using the pseudospectral solver UltraDark.jl, we simulate the tidal disruption of self-interacting solitonic …

Subcomponent millicharged dark matter that cools baryons via Coulomb interactions has been invoked to explain the EDGES anomaly. However, this model is in severe tension with constraints from cosmology and stellar emissions. In this work, we consider the consequences of these millicharged particles existing in composite blobs. The relevant degrees of freedom at high temperature are minuscule elementary charges, which fuse at low temperatures to make up blobs of larger charge. These blobs serve as the degrees of freedom relevant in cooling the baryons sufficiently to account for the EDGES anoma…
We investigate the hypothesis that Coulomb-type interactions between dark matter (DM) and baryons explain the anomalously low 21cm brightness-temperature minimum at redshift z ~ 17 that was recently measured by the EDGES experiment. In particular, we reassess the validity of the scenario where a small fraction of the total DM is millicharged, focusing on newly derived constraints from Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. Crucially, the CMB power spectrum is sensitive to DM-baryon scattering if the fraction of interacting DM is larger than (or comparable to) the fractional uncert…

PyUltraLight simulates the dynamics of ultralight dark matter in a non-expanding background. PyUltraLight can describe the evolution of several interacting ultralight dark matter halos or one or more halos orbiting a central, fixed Newtonian potential, the latter scenario corresponding to dwarf galaxies orbiting a massive central galaxy. We verify PyUltraLight by showing that it reproduces qualitative dynamical features of previously published simulations and demonstrate that it has excellent energy-conservation properties. PyUltraLight is implemented in a Python-based Jupyter notebook, solvin…
Axion particles can form macroscopic condensates, whose size can be galactic in scale for models with very small axion masses $m\sim10^{-22}$ eV, and which are sometimes referred to under the name of Fuzzy Dark Matter. Many analyses of these condensates are done in the non-interacting limit, due to the weakness of the self-interaction coupling of axions. We investigate here how certain results change upon inclusion of these interactions, finding a decreased maximum mass and a modified mass-radius relationship. Further, these condensates are, in general, unstable to decay through number-changin…
We simulate the gravitational dynamics of a massive object interacting with Ultralight / Fuzzy Dark Matter (ULDM/FDM), non-relativistic quantum matter described by the Schrodinger-Poisson equation. We first consider a point mass moving in a uniform background, and then a supermassive black hole (SMBH) moving within a ULDM soliton. After replicating simple dynamical friction scenarios to verify our numerical strategies, we demonstrate that the wake induced by a moving mass in a uniform medium may undergo gravitational collapse that dramatically increases the drag force, albeit in a scenario unl…
We consider direct-detection searches for sub-GeV dark matter via electron scatterings in the presence of large interactions between dark and ordinary matter. Scatterings both on electrons and nuclei in the Earth's crust, atmosphere, and shielding material attenuate the expected local dark matter flux at a terrestrial detector, so that such experiments lose sensitivity to dark matter above some critical cross section. We study various models, including dark matter interacting with a heavy and ultralight dark photon, through an electric dipole moment, and exclusively with electrons. For a dark-…
Dark matter-baryon interactions can cool the baryonic fluid, which has been shown to modify the cosmological 21-cm global signal. We show that in a two-component dark sector with an interacting millicharged component, dark matter-baryon scattering can produce a 21-cm power spectrum signal with acoustic oscillations. The signal can be up to three orders of magnitude larger than expected in $Λ$CDM cosmology, given realistic astrophysical models. This model provides a new-physics target for near-future experiments such as HERA or NenuFAR, which can potentially discover or strongly constrain the d…

We assume dark matter to be a cosmological self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensate of non-relativistic ultralight scalar particles with competing gravitational and repulsive contact interactions and investigate the observational implications of such model. The system is unstable to the formation of stationary self-bound structures that minimize the energy functional. These cosmological superfluid droplets, which are the smallest possible gravitationally bound dark matter structures, exhibit a universal mass profile and a corresponding universal rotation curve. Assuming a hierarchical structu…

It has been postulated that Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM) could be a viable alternative to Cold Dark Matter (CDM). FDM is comprised of ultralight bosons which exist as a Bose-Einstein condensate. Due to the very low mass of FDM, the de Broglie wavelength of these bosons are of the order of kpc and the quantum effects manifest at those scales. Hence, unlike CDM, FDM experiences quantum pressure along with gravitational attraction. In this work, we investigate the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric FDM overdensity. We assume a power law density profile for an overdense region of FDM and…

Dark matter may be composed of self-interacting ultralight quantum fields that form macroscopic objects. An example of which includes Q-balls, compact non-topological solitons predicted by a range of theories that are viable dark matter candidates. As the Earth moves through the galaxy, interactions with such objects may leave transient perturbations in terrestrial experiments. Here we propose a new dark matter signature: an asymmetry (and other non-Gaussianities) that may thereby be induced in the noise distributions of precision quantum sensors, such as atomic clocks, magnetometers, and inte…
Elucidating the particle physics nature of dark matter (DM) is one of the great challenges in modern science. The current lack of any direct DM detections in the laboratory heightens the need for astrophysical constraints, extending the search to DM models beyond the popular weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) scenario. We here apply the classical Rees-Ostriker-Silk cooling criterion for galaxy formation to models with ultralight axion DM, also known as fuzzy dark matter (FDM). The resulting constraints provide a heuristic framework for upcoming observations, and our approximate analysi…
Many works have concentrated on the observable signatures of the dark matter being an ultralight axion-like particle (ALP). We concentrate on a particularly dramatic signature in the late-time cosmological matter power spectrum that occurs if the symmetry breaking that establishes the ALP happens after inflation -- white-noise density fluctuations that dominate at small scales over the adiabatic fluctuations from inflation. These fluctuations alter the early history of nonlinear structure formation. We find that for symmetry breaking scales of $f_A \sim 10^{13}-10^{15}$GeV, which requires a hi…
The focus on dark matter search has expanded to include low-mass particles such as axions or axion-like particles, and novel theoretical schemes extending the phenomenological landscape, within QCD and beyond, also garnered additional interest in recent decades. Assuming dark matter is composed of axions, in presence of a solenoidal magnetic field, they induce a displacement current that gives rise to a toroidal magnetic field. The Weakly Interacting Slender Particle detection with LC circuit (WISPLC) is a precision direct detection experiment that will search for light dark matter candidates …
We study the effects of a dark matter component that consists of bosonic particles with ultralight masses in the condensed state. We compare previous studies for both non-interacting condensates and with repulsive two-body terms and show consistency between the proposals. Furthermore, we explore the effects of rotation on a superfluid dark matter condensate, assuming that a vortex lattice forms as seen in ultracold atomic gas experiments. The influence of such a lattice in virialization of gravitationally bound structures and on galactic rotation velocity curves is explored. With fine-tuning o…
We present a method to search for scalar field ultralight dark matter directly interacting with gravitational-wave interferometers via a modulation of the fine structure constant and the electron mass. This modulation induces an effective strain in solid materials at a frequency determined by the mass of the dark matter particle. We study the prospects for looking for such an effect in the LIGO detectors by using the solid cavity which is nominally used for pre-stabilizing the laser frequency and we project upper limits. We contextualize them with previous limits from GEO600, possible limits f…

We investigate what the orbits of globular clusters (GCs) in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy can teach us about dark matter (DM). This problem was recently studied for ultralight dark matter (ULDM). We consider two additional models: (i) fermionic degenerate dark matter (DDM), where Pauli blocking should be taken into account in the dynamical friction computation; and (ii) self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). We give a simple and direct Fokker-Planck derivation of dynamical friction, new in the case of DDM and reproducing previous results in the literature for ULDM and cold DM. ULDM,…
