We construct a two-parameter family of Feller diffusions on the set of open subsets of $(0,1)$ that arise as diffusive limits of two-parameter ordered Chinese Restaurant Process up-down chains. The diffusions we construct are natural ordered analogues of Petrov's two-parameter extension of Ethier and Kurtz's infinitely-many-neutral-alleles diffusion model. Recently, there has been significant interest in ordered analogues of the diffusions Petrov constructed. Existing methods for constructing such processes have been based on pathwise methods using marked Lévy processes and an outstanding conjecture about these processes is that they are, in fact, the diffusive limit of the ordered Chinese Restaurant Process up-down chains that we consider here. We make progress on this conjecture by showing that the diffusive limit of the ordered Chinese Restaurant Process up-down chains exists. Moreover, our methods yield a simple, explicit description of the generator of the limiting processes on a core described in terms of quasisymmetric functions.
We study a Markov process constructed from the Pólya sum process, which yields a kind of spatial version of the Chinese restaurant process, where each 'table' is assigned a 'location'. This construction firstly allows a definition of summation of independent processes, and secondly a monotone coupling for different parameters. Moreover, the process is related to a multi-particle random walk on the positive integers and its hydrodynamic limit and fluctuations are discussed.
By resorting to sequential constructions of exchangeable random partitions (Pitman, 2006), and exploiting some known facts about generalized Stirling numbers, we derive a generalized Chinese restaurant process construction of exchangeable Gibbs partitions of type $α$ (Gnedin and Pitman, 2006). Our construction represents the natural theoretical probabilistic framework in which to embed some recent results about a Bayesian nonparametric treatment of estimation problems arising in genetic experiment under Gibbs, species sampling, models priors.
We study composition-valued continuous-time Markov chains that appear naturally in the framework of Chinese Restaurant Processes (CRPs). As time evolves, new customers arrive (up-step) and existing customers leave (down-step) at suitable rates derived from the ordered CRP of Pitman and Winkel (2009). We relate such up-down CRPs to the splitting trees of Lambert (2010) inducing spectrally positive Lévy processes. Conversely, we develop theorems of Ray-Knight type to recover more general up-down CRPs from the heights of Lévy processes with jumps marked by integer-valued paths. We further establi…
Recently there has been significant interest in constructing ordered analogues of Petrov's two-parameter extension of Ethier and Kurtz's infinitely-many-neutral-alleles diffusion model. One method for constructing these processes goes through taking an appropriate diffusive limit of Markov chains on integer compositions called ordered Chinese Restaurant Process up-down chains. The resulting processes are diffusions whose state space is the set of open subsets of the open unit interval. In this paper we begin to study nontrivial aspects of the order structure of these diffusions. In particular,…
The Generalized Chinese Restaurant Process (GCRP) describes a sequence of exchangeable random partitions of the numbers $\{1,\dots,n\}$. This process is related to the Ewens sampling model in Genetics and to Bayesian nonparametric methods such as topic models. In this paper, we study the GCRP in a regime where the number of parts grows like $n^α$ with $α>0$. We prove a non-asymptotic concentration result for the number of parts of size $k=o(n^{α/(2α+4)}/(\log n)^{1/(2+α)})$. In particular, we show that these random variables concentrate around $c_{k}\,V_*\,n^α$ where $V_*\,n^α$ is the asymptot…
We construct a stationary Markov process corresponding to the evolution of masses and distances of subtrees along the spine from the root to a branch point in a conjectured stationary, continuum random tree-valued diffusion that was proposed by David Aldous. As a corollary this Markov process induces a recurrent extension, with Dirichlet stationary distribution, of a Wright-Fisher diffusion for which zero is an exit boundary of the coordinate processes. This extends previous work of Pal who argued a Wright-Fisher limit for the three-mass process under the conjectured Aldous diffusion until the…
Given a growth rule which sequentially constructs random permutations of increasing degree, the stochastic process version of the rencontre problem asks what is the limiting proportion of time that the permutation has no fixed points (singleton cycles). We show that the discrete-time Chinese Restaurant Process (CRP) does not exhibit this limit. We then consider the related embedding of the CRP in continuous time and thereby show that it does have this and other limits of the time averages. By this embedding the cycle structure of the permutation can be represented as a tandem of infinite-serve…
In previous work, we constructed Fleming--Viot-type measure-valued diffusions (and diffusions on a space of interval partitions of the unit interval $[0,1]$) that are stationary with the Poisson--Dirichlet laws with parameters $α\in(0,1)$ and $θ\geq 0$. In this paper, we complete the proof that these processes resolve a conjecture by Feng and Sun (2010) by showing that the processes of ranked atom sizes (or of ranked interval lengths) of these diffusions are members of a two-parameter family of diffusions introduced by Petrov (2009), extending a model by Ethier and Kurtz (1981) in the case $α=…
We construct a pair of related diffusions on a space of interval partitions of the unit interval $[0,1]$ that are stationary with the Poisson-Dirichlet laws with parameters (1/2,0) and (1/2,1/2) respectively. These are two particular cases of a general construction of such processes obtained by decorating the jumps of a spectrally positive Lévy process with independent squared Bessel excursions. The processes of ranked interval lengths of our partitions are members of a two parameter family of diffusions introduced by Ethier and Kurtz (1981) and Petrov (2009). The latter diffusions are continu…
We use a natural ordered extension of the Chinese Restaurant Process to grow a two-parameter family of binary self-similar continuum fragmentation trees. We provide an explicit embedding of Ford's sequence of alpha model trees in the continuum tree which we identified in a previous article as a distributional scaling limit of Ford's trees. In general, the Markov branching trees induced by the two-parameter growth rule are not sampling consistent, so the existence of compact limiting trees cannot be deduced from previous work on the sampling consistent case. We develop here a new approach to es…
We give a pathwise construction of a two-parameter family of purely-atomic-measure-valued diffusions in which ranked masses of atoms are stationary with the Poisson-Dirichlet$(α,θ)$ distributions, for $α\in (0,1)$ and $θ\ge 0$. This resolves a conjecture of Feng and Sun (2010). We build on our previous work on $(α,0)$- and $(α,α)$-interval partition evolutions. Indeed, we first extract a self-similar superprocess from the levels of stable processes whose jumps are decorated with squared Bessel excursions and distinct allelic types. We complete our construction by time-change and normalisation …
It is possible to represent each of a number of Markov chains as an evolving sequence of connected subsets of a directed acyclic graph that grow in the following way: initially, all vertices of the graph are unoccupied, particles are fed in one-by-one at a distinguished source vertex, successive particles proceed along directed edges according to an appropriate stochastic mechanism, and each particle comes to rest once it encounters an unoccupied vertex. Examples include the binary and digital search tree processes, the random recursive tree process and generalizations of it arising from neste…
We introduce diffusions on a space of interval partitions of the unit interval that are stationary with the Poisson-Dirichlet laws with parameters $(α,0)$ and $(α,α)$. The construction has two steps. The first is a general construction of interval partition processes obtained previously, by decorating the jumps of a Lévy process with independent excursions. Here, we focus on the second step, which requires explicit transition kernels and what we call pseudo-stationarity. This allows us to study processes obtained from the original construction via scaling and time-change. In a sequel paper, we…
We introduce a class of stochastic processes with reinforcement consisting of a sequence of random partitions $\{\mathcal{P}_t\}_{t \ge 1}$, where $\mathcal{P}_t$ is a partition of $\{1,2,\dots, Rt\}$. At each time~$t$,~$R$ numbers are added to the set being partitioned; of these, a random subset (chosen according to a time-dependent probability distribution) joins existing blocks, and the others each start new blocks on their own. Those joining existing blocks each choose a block with probability proportional to that block's cardinality, independently. We prove results concerning the asymptot…
We describe the combinatorial stochastic process underlying a sequence of conditionally independent Bernoulli processes with a shared beta process hazard measure. As shown by Thibaux and Jordan [TJ07], in the special case when the underlying beta process has a constant concentration function and a finite and nonatomic mean, the combinatorial structure is that of the Indian buffet process (IBP) introduced by Griffiths and Ghahramani [GG05]. By reinterpreting the beta process introduced by Hjort [Hjo90] as a measurable family of Dirichlet processes, we obtain a simple predictive rule for the gen…
