We give a detailed account of a stationary impurity in an ideal Bose-Einstein condensate, which we call the ideal Bose polaron, at both zero and non-zero temperatures and arbitrary strength of the impurity-boson coupling. The time evolution is solved exactly and it is found that, surprisingly, many of the features that have been predicted for the real BEC are already present in this simpler setting and can be understood analytically therein. We obtain explicit formulae for the time evolution of the condensate wave function at $T=0$ and of the one-particle density matrix at $T>0$. For negative scattering length, the system is found to thermalize even though the dynamics are perfectly coherent. The time evolution and thermal values of the Tan contact are derived and compared to a recent experiment. We find that contrary to the Fermi polaron, the contact is not bounded at unitarity as long as a condensate exists. An explicit formula for the dynamical overlap at $T=0$ allows us to compute the rf spectrum which can be understood in detail by relating it to the two-body problem of one boson and the impurity.
We theoretically investigate how quasi-particle properties of an attractive Fermi polaron are affected by nonzero temperature and finite impurity concentration. By applying both non-self-consistent and self-consistent many-body $T$-matrix theories, we calculate the polaron energy (including decay rate), effective mass, and residue, as functions of temperature and impurity concentration. The temperature and concentration dependences are weak on the BCS side with a negative impurity-medium scattering length. Toward the strong attraction regime across the unitary limit, we find sizable dependence…
An extremely polarized mixture of an ultracold Fermi gas is expected to reduce to a Fermi polaron system, which consists of a single impurity immersed in the Fermi sea of majority atoms. By developing a many-body T -matrix theory, we investigate spectral properties of the polarized mixture in experimentally relevant regimes in which the system of finite impurity concentration at nonzero temperature is concerned. We explicitly demonstrate presence of polaron physics in the polarized limit and discuss effects of many polarons in an intermediate regime in a self-consistent manner. By analyzing th…
We consider the dynamics of a quantum impurity after a sudden interaction quench into a one-dimensional degenerate Bose gas. We use the Keldysh path integral formalism to derive a truncated Wigner like approach that takes the back action of the impurity onto the condensate into account already on the mean-field level and further incorporates thermal and quantum effects up to one-loop accuracy. This framework enables us not only to calculate the real space trajectory of the impurity but also the absorption spectrum. We find that quantum corrections and thermal effects play a crucial role for th…
We monitor the correlated quench induced dynamical dressing of a spinor impurity repulsively interacting with a Bose-Einstein condensate. Inspecting the temporal evolution of the structure factor three distinct dynamical regions arise upon increasing the interspecies interaction. These regions are found to be related to the segregated nature of the impurity and to the ohmic character of the bath. It is shown that the impurity dynamics can be described by an effective potential that deforms from a harmonic to a double-well one when crossing the miscibility-immiscibility threshold. In particular…
We use a high-temperature expansion to explore spin correlations around a single hole in a two- dimensional lattice filled with a hard-core two component bose gas. We find that the spins around the hole develop ferromagnetic order and quantify the degree of polarization at temperatures of order the hopping energy, finding a measurably nonzero polarization. We also discuss the effect of fixing the overall magnetization of the system for finite-sized systems.
We theoretically investigate the quasiparticle (polaron) properties of an impurity immersing in a Bose-Einstein condensate with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling at zero temperature. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling, all bosons can condense into a single plane-wave state with finite momentum, and the corresponding excitation spectrum shows an intriguing roton minimum. We find that the polaron properties are strongly modified by this roton minimum, where the ground state of attractive polaron acquires a nonzero momentum and anisotropic effective mass. Across the resonance o…
We study the quantum dynamics of a single impurity following its sudden immersion into a Bose-Einstein condensate. The ensuing formation of the Bose polaron in this general setting can be seen as impurity decoherence driven by the condensate, which we describe within a master equation approach. We derive rigorous analytical results for this decoherence dynamics, and thereby reveal distinct stages of its evolution from a universal stretched exponential initial relaxation to the final approach to equilibrium. The associated polaron formation time exhibits a strong dependence on the impurity spee…
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of relaxation and dressing of a mobile impurity suddenly immersed--or quenched-- into a zero temperature homogeneous Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) with velocity $v$. A many body generalization of Weisskopf-Wigner theory is implemented to obtain the impurity fidelity, reduced density matrix and entanglement entropy. The dynamics depend crucially on the Mach number $β=v/c$, with $c$ the speed of sound of superfluid phonons and features many different time scales. Quantum Zeno behavior at early time is followed by relaxational and dressing dynamics determine…

We perform an extensive numerical study on the breathing dynamics of a few-body Bose polaron setup in a one-dimensional species-selective harmonic trap. The dynamics is triggered by a quench of the impurity trap. The excitation of the background majority atoms is mediated via the majority-impurity interaction. The breathing spectrum is obtained for different numbers of majority particles, several values of the majority-component interaction strengths and trap ratios. It is further compared to the breathing spectrum of a particle-balanced few-body Bose-Bose mixture. In particular, for equal pos…
By using a non-self-consistent many-body $T$-matrix theory, we calculate the finite-temperature Raman spectroscopy of a mobile impurity immersed in a Fermi bath in three dimensions. The dependences of the Raman spectrum on the transferred momentum, temperature, and impurity-bath interaction are discussed in detail. We confirm that the peak in the Raman spectrum shows a weaker dependence on the impurity concentration than that in the radio-frequency spectroscopy, due to the nonzero transferred momentum, as anticipated. We compare our theoretical prediction with the recent measurement by Gal Nes…
Since the Efimov effect was introduced in 1970, a detailed theoretical understanding of Efimov physics has been developed in the few-body context. However, it has proven to be challenging to describe the role Efimov-type correlations play in many-body systems such as quenched or collapsing Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). To study the impact the Efimov effect can have in such scenarios, we consider a light impurity immersed in a weakly interacting BEC, forming a Bose polaron. In this case, the higher-order correlations are localized around the impurity, making it more feasible to develop a th…
Exact theory of the finite-temperature spectral function of Fermi polarons with multiple particle-hole excitations: Diagrammatic theory versus Chevy ansatz
We study the ground state properties and nonequilibrium dynamics of two spinor bosonic impurities immersed in a one-dimensional bosonic gas upon applying an interspecies interaction quench. For the ground state of two non-interacting impurities we reveal signatures of attractive induced interactions in both cases of attractive or repulsive interspecies interactions, while a weak impurity-impurity repulsion forces the impurities to stay apart. Turning to the quench dynamics we inspect the time-evolution of the contrast unveiling the existence, dynamical deformation and the orthogonality catastr…
The mobile impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is a paradigmatic many-body problem. For weak interaction between the impurity and the BEC, the impurity deforms the BEC only slightly and it is well described within the Fröhlich model and the Bogoliubov approximation. For strong local attraction this standard approach, however, fails to balance the local attraction with the weak repulsion between the BEC particles and predicts an instability where an infinite number of bosons is attracted toward the impurity. Here we present a solution of the Bose polaron problem beyond the Bogoliubov a…
We investigate the formation of a Bose polaron when a single impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate is quenched from a non-interacting to an attractively interacting state in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance. We use a beyond-Fröhlich Hamiltonian to describe both sides of the resonance and a coherent-state variational ansatz to compute the time evolution of boson density profiles in position space. We find that on the repulsive side of the Feshbach resonance, the Bose polaron performs long-lived oscillations, which is surprising given that the two-body problem has only one bound state coupl…
Recent studies have demonstrated that higher than two-body bath-impurity correlations are not important for quantitatively describing the ground state of the Bose polaron. Motivated by the above, we employ the so-called Gross Ansatz (GA) approach to unravel the stationary and dynamical properties of the homogeneous one-dimensional Bose-polaron for different impurity momenta and bath-impurity couplings. We explicate that the character of the equilibrium state crossovers from the quasi-particle Bose polaron regime to the collective-excitation stationary dark-bright soliton for varying impurity m…
Many-body systems driven out of equilibrium can exhibit scaling flows of the quantum state. For a sudden quench to resonant interactions between particles we construct a new class of analytical scaling solutions for the time evolved wave function with a complex scale parameter. These solutions determine the exact dynamical scaling of observables such as the pair correlation function, the contact and the fidelity. We give explicit examples of the nonequilibrium dynamics for two trapped fermions or bosons quenched to unitarity, for ideal Bose polarons, and for resonantly interacting, Borromean t…
Nonequilibrium dynamics of noninteracting bosons in a one-dimensional ring-shaped lattice is studied by means of the Kinetic Monte Carlo method. The system is approximated by the classical XY model (the kinetic term is neglected) and then the simulations are performed for the planar classical spins. We study the dynamics that follows a finite-time quench to zero temperature. If the quench is slow enough the system can equilibrate and finally reaches the ground state with uniform spin alignment. However, we show that if the quench is faster than the relaxation rate, the system can get locked in…
When a mobile impurity interacts with a surrounding bath of bosons, it forms a polaron. Numerous methods have been developed to calculate how the energy and the effective mass of the polaron are renormalized by the medium for equilibrium situations. Here we address the much less studied non-equilibrium regime and investigate how polarons form dynamically in time. To this end, we develop a time-dependent renormalization group approach which allows calculations of all dynamical properties of the system and takes into account the effects of quantum fluctuations in the polaron cloud. We apply this…
We discuss the topological invariant in the (2+1)-dimensional quench dynamics of a two-dimensional two-band Chern insulator starting from a topological initial state (i.e., with a nonzero Chern number $c_i$), evolved by a post-quench Hamiltonian (with Chern number $c_f$). In contrast to the process with $c_i=0$ studied in previous works, this process cannot be characterized by the Hopf invariant that is described by the sphere homotopy group $π_3(S^2)=\mathbb{Z}$. It is possible, however, to calculate a variant of the Chern-Simons integral with a complementary part to cancel the Chern number o…

We study the quench dynamics of a topological $p$-wave superfluid with two competing order parameters, $Δ_\pm(t)$. When the system is prepared in the $p+ip$ ground state and the interaction strength is quenched, only $Δ_+(t)$ is nonzero. However, we show that fluctuations in the initial conditions result in the growth of $Δ_-(t)$ and chaotic oscillations of both order parameters. We term this behavior phase III'. In addition, there are two other types of late time dynamics -- phase I where both order parameters decay to zero and phase II where $Δ_+(t)$ asymptotes to a nonzero constant while $Δ…
We present a theory of radio-frequency spectroscopy of impurities interacting with a quantum gas at finite temperature. By working in the canonical ensemble of a single impurity, we show that the impurity spectral response is directly connected to the finite-temperature equation of state (free energy) of the impurity. We consider two different response protocols: "injection", where the impurity is introduced into the medium from an initially non-interacting state; and "ejection", where the impurity is ejected from an initially interacting state with the medium. We show that there is a simple m…
Brownian motion of a mobile impurity in a bath is affected by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we discuss a Caldeira-Leggett-type model that can be used to propose and interpret quantum simulators of this problem in cold Bose gases. First, we derive a master equation that describes the model and explore it in a one-dimensional (1D) setting. To validate the standard assumptions needed for our derivation, we analyze available experimental data without SOC; as a byproduct, this analysis suggests that the quench dynamics of the impurity is beyond the 1D Bose-polaron approach at temperatures curren…
Understanding strongly correlated phases of matter, from the quark-gluon plasma to neutron stars, and in particular the dynamics of such systems, $e.g.$ following a Hamiltonian quench, poses a fundamental challenge in modern physics. Ultracold atomic gases are excellent quantum simulators for these problems, thanks to tuneable interparticle interactions and experimentally resolvable intrinsic timescales. In particular, they give access to the unitary regime where the interactions are as strong as allowed by quantum mechanics. Following years of experiments on unitary Fermi gases, unitary Bose …
We study the dynamic response of an s-wave BCS-BEC (atomic-molecular) condensate to detuning quenches within the two channel model beyond the weak coupling BCS limit. At long times after the quench, the condensate ends up in one of three main asymptotic states (nonequilibrium phases), which are qualitatively similar to those in other fermionic condensates defined by a global complex order parameter. In phase I the amplitude of the order parameter vanishes as a power law, in phase II it goes to a nonzero constant, and in phase III it oscillates persistently. We construct exact quench phase diag…
We study the collisionless dynamics of two classes of nonintegrable pairing models. One is a BCS model with separable energy-dependent interactions, the other - a 2D topological superconductor with spin-orbit coupling and a band-splitting external field. The long-time quantum quench dynamics at integrable points of these models are well understood. Namely, the squared magnitude of the time-dependent order parameter $Δ(t)$ can either vanish (Phase I), reach a nonzero constant (Phase II), or periodically oscillate as an elliptic function (Phase III). We demonstrate that nonintegrable models too …
We report an experimental study of quench dynamics across the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ in a strongly interacting Fermi gas by ramping down the trapping potential. The nonzero quasi-condensate number $N_0$ at temperature significantly above $T_c$ in the unitary and the BEC regimes reveals the pseudogap physics. Below $T_c$, a rapid growth of $N_0$ is accompanied by spontaneous generation of tens of vortices. We observe a power law scaling of the vortex density versus the quasi-condensate formation time, consistent with the Kibble-Zurek theory. Our work provides an example of stud…
We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate in strong interaction with a single impurity particle. While this situation has received considerable interest in recent years, the regime of strong coupling remained inaccessible to most approaches due to an instability in Bogoliubov theory arising near the resonance. We present a nonlocal extension of Gross-Pitaevskii theory that is free of such divergences and does not require the use of the Born approximation in any of the interaction potentials. We find a new dynamical transition regime between attractive and repulsive polarons, where an interacti…
