In arXiv:1911.08172 we have studied the single-particle free energy of a class of Little String Theories of A-type, which are engineered by $N$ parallel M5-branes on a circle. To leading instanton order (from the perspective of the low energy $U(N)$ gauge theory) and partially also to higher order, a decomposition was observed, which resembles a Feynman diagrammatic expansion: external states are given by expansion coefficients of the $N=1$ BPS free energy and a quasi-Jacobi form that governs the BPS-counting of an M5-brane coupling to two M2-branes. The effective coupling functions were written as infinite series and similarities to modular graph functions were remarked. In the current work we continue and extend this study: Working with the full non-perturbative BPS free energy, we analyse in detail the cases $N=2,3$ and $4$. We argue that in these cases to leading instanton order all coupling functions can be written as a simple combination of two-point functions of a single free scalar field on the torus. We provide closed form expressions, which we conjecture to hold for generic $N$. To higher instanton order, we observe that a decomposition of the free energy in terms of higher point functions with the same external states is still possible but a priori not unique. We nevertheless provide evidence that tentative coupling functions are still combinations of scalar Greens functions, which are decorated with derivatives or multiplied with holomorphic Eisenstein series. We interpret these decorations as corrections of the leading order effective couplings and in particular link the latter to dihedral graph functions with bivalent vertices, which suggests an interpretation in terms of disconnected graphs.
We discuss the on-shell diagrammatic representation of theories less special than maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills. In particular, we focus on planar $\mathcal{N}\,\le\,2$ gauge theories, including pure Yang-Mills. For such a class of theories, the on-shell diagrammatics is endowed with a decoration which carries the information on the helicity of the coherent states. In the first part of the paper we extensively discuss the properties of this decorated diagrammatics. Particular relevance have the helicity flows that the decoration induces on the diagrams, which allows to identify the diffe…
The divergence of perturbative expansions for the vast majority of macroscopic systems, which follows from Dyson's collapse argument, prevents Feynman's diagrammatic technique from being directly used for controllable studies of strongly interacting systems. We show how the problem of divergence can be solved by replacing the original model with a convergent sequence of successive approximations which have a convergent perturbative series. As a prototypical model, we consider the zero-dimensional $\vert ψ\vert^4$ theory.
A simple set of diagrammatic rules is formulated for perturbative evaluation of ``in-in" correlators, as is needed in cosmology and other nonequilibrium problems. These rules are both intuitive, and efficient for calculational purposes.
Perturbative cross-sections in QCD are beset by logarithms of kinematic invariants, whose arguments vanish when heavy particles are produced near threshold. Contributions of this type often need to be summed to all orders in the coupling, in order to improve the behaviour of the perturbative expansion, and it has long been known how to do this at leading power in the threshold variable, using a variety of approaches. Recently, the problem of extending this resummation to logarithms suppressed by a single power of the threshold variable has received considerable attention. In this paper, we sho…
At very high energies scattering amplitudes in a spontaneously broken gauge theory into multi-particle final states are known to grow factorially with the number of particles produced. Using simple scalar field theory models with and without the VEV, we compute total cross-sections with up to 7 particles in the final state at the leading order in perturbation theory with MadGraph. By exploring the known scaling properties of the multi-particle rates with the number of particles, we determine from these the general $n$-point cross-sections in the large-$n$ limit. In the high-multiplicity regime…
The cutting equations are diagrammatic identities that are used to prove perturbative unitarity in quantum field theory. In this paper, we derive algebraic, upgraded versions of them. Differently from the diagrammatic versions, the algebraic identities also holds for propagators with arbitrary, nonvanishing widths. In particular, the cut propagators do not need to vanish off shell. The new approach provides a framework to address unsolved problems of perturbative quantum field theory and a tool to investigate perturbative unitarity in higher-derivative theories that are relevant to the problem…
We study the evolution of the non-equilibrium quantum fields from a highly excited initial state in two approaches: the standard Keldysh-Schwinger diagram technique and the semiclassical expansion. We demonstrate explicitly that these two approaches coincide if the coupling constant $g$ and the Plank constant $\hbar$ are small simultaneously. Also, we discuss loop diagrams of the perturbative approach, which are summed up by the leading order term of the semiclassical expansion. As an example, we consider shear viscosity for the scalar field theory at the leading semiclassical order. We introd…
We develop numerical tools for Diagrammatic Monte-Carlo simulations of non-Abelian lattice field theories in the t'Hooft large-N limit based on the weak-coupling expansion. First we note that the path integral measure of such theories contributes a bare mass term in the effective action which is proportional to the bare coupling constant. This mass term renders the perturbative expansion infrared-finite and allows to study it directly in the large-N and infinite-volume limits using the Diagrammatic Monte-Carlo approach. On the exactly solvable example of a large-N O(N) sigma model in D=2 dimen…
Convergence of the self-consistent skeleton diagrammatic technique (SDT) -- in which the full Green's function is determined through summation of Feynman diagrams in terms of itself -- to the wrong answer has been associated with the existence of non-perturbative branches of the Luttinger-Ward functional. Although it has been possible to detect misleading convergence without the knowledge of the exact result, the SDT has remained inapplicable in the regimes where this happens. We show that misleading convergence does not always preclude recovering the exact solution. In addition to the establi…
We show that the system of $k$ NS5-branes wrapping $\mathbb{T}^4\times S^1$ has non-trivial vacuum structure. Different vacua have different spectra of 1/4 BPS states that carry momentum and winding around the $S^1$. In one vacuum, such states are described by black holes; in another, they can be thought of as perturbative BPS states in Double Scaled Little String Theory. In general, both kinds of states are present. We compute the degeneracy of perturbative BPS states exactly, and show that it differs from that of the corresponding black holes. We comment on the implication of our results to …
The transfer-matrix of U(1) lattice gauge theory is investigated in the field Fourier space, the basis of which consists of the quantized currents on lattice links. Based on a lattice version of the current conservation, the transfer-matrix elements are shown to be non-zero only between current-states that differ in circulating currents inside plaquettes. In the strong coupling limit, a series expansion is developed for the elements of the transfer-matrix, to which a diagrammatic representation based on the occurrence of virtual link and loop currents can be associated. With $g$ as the couplin…
We provide generating functions for the perturbative massive string spectrum which are covariant with respect to the SO(9) little group, and which contain all the representation theoretic content of the spectrum. Generating functions for perturbative bosonic, Type II, Heterotic and Type I string theories are presented, and generalizations are discussed.
We report a perturbative calculation of the expectation value of the infinite straight line Maldacena-Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to order $g^6$. Thus, we extend the previous perturbative result by one order. The vacuum expectation value is reformulated in terms of a non-linear and non-local transformation, the Nicolai map, mapping the full functional measure of the interacting theory to that of a free bosonic theory. The results are twofold. The perturbative cancellations of the different contributions to the Maldacena-Wilson loop are by no means trivial an…
A formula was recently proposed for the perturbative partition function of certain $\mathcal N=1$ gauge theories on the round four-sphere, using an analytic-continuation argument in the number of dimensions. These partition functions are not currently accessible via the usual supersymmetric-localisation technique. We provide a natural refinement of this result to the case of the ellipsoid. We then use it to write down the perturbative partition function of an $\mathcal N=1$ toroidal-quiver theory (a double orbifold of $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills) and show that, in the deconstruction limit,…
We investigate analytic properties of loop-level perturbative dynamics in pure AdS, with the scalar effective theories with non-derivative couplings as a prototype. Explicit computations reveal certain (perhaps unexpected) simplicity regarding the pole structure of the results, in both the Mellin amplitude and a closely related object that we call Mellin pre-amplitude. Correspondingly we propose a pair of conjectures for arbitrary diagrams at all loops, based on non-trivial evidence up to two loops (and higher loops in a special class of diagrams). We also inspect the structure of residues at …
We discuss the feasibility of applying Diagrammatic Monte-Carlo algorithms to the weak-coupling expansions of asymptotically free quantum field theories, taking the large-$N$ limit of the $O(N)$ sigma-model as the simplest example where exact results are available. We use stereographic mapping from the sphere to the real plane to set up the perturbation theory, which results in a small bare mass term proportional to the coupling $λ$. Counting the powers of coupling associated with higher-order interaction vertices, we arrive at the double-series representation for the dynamically generated mas…
We present a new perturbative formulation of non-equilibrium thermal field theory, based upon non-homogeneous free propagators and time-dependent vertices. The resulting time-dependent diagrammatic perturbation series are free of pinch singularities without the need for quasi-particle approximation or effective resummation of finite widths. After arriving at a physically meaningful definition of particle number densities, we derive master time evolution equations for statistical distribution functions, which are valid to all orders in perturbation theory and to all orders in a gradient expansi…
We study tree level scattering amplitudes of four massless states in the double scaled little string theory, and compare them to perturbative loop amplitudes in six-dimensional super-Yang-Mills theory. The little string amplitudes are computed from correlators in the cigar coset CFT and in N=2 minimal models. The results are expressed in terms of integrals of conformal blocks and evaluated numerically in the alpha' expansion. We find striking agreements with up to 2-loop scattering amplitudes of massless gluons in 6D SU(k) SYM at a Z_k invariant point on the Coulomb branch. We comment on the i…

Supersymmetric gauge theories are characterized by the existence of a transformation of the bosonic fields (Nicolai map) such that the Jacobi determinant of the transformation equals the product of the Matthews-Salam-Seiler and Faddeev-Popov determinants. This transformation had been worked out to second order in the coupling constant. In this paper, we extend this result (and the framework itself) to third order in the coupling constant. A diagrammatic approach in terms of tree diagrams, aiming to extend this map to arbitrary orders, is outlined. This formalism bypasses entirely the use of an…
We study up to 8-derivative terms in the Coulomb branch effective action of (1,1) little string theory, by collecting results of 4-gluon scattering amplitudes from both perturbative 6D super-Yang-Mills theory up to 4-loop order, and tree-level double scaled little string theory (DSLST). In previous work we have matched the 6-derivative term from the 6D gauge theory to DSLST, indicating that this term is protected on the entire Coulomb branch. The 8-derivative term, on the other hand, is unprotected. In this paper we compute the 8-derivative term by interpolating from the two limits, near the o…
Non-perturbative study of "real-time" field theories is difficult due to the sign problem. We use Bold Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equations to study the real-time $ϕ^4$ theory in $d=4$ beyond the perturbative regime. Combining SD equations in a particular way, we derive a non-linear integral equation for the two-point function. Then we introduce a new method by which one can analytically perform the momentum part of loop integrals in this equation. The price we must pay for such simplification is to numerically solve a non-linear integral equation for the spectral density function. Using Bold diagra…
Diagrammatic techniques to compute perturbatively the spectral properties of Euclidean Random Matrices in the high-density regime are introduced and discussed in detail. Such techniques are developed in two alternative and very different formulations of the mathematical problem and are shown to give identical results up to second order in the perturbative expansion. One method, based on writing the so-called resolvent function as a Taylor series, allows to group the diagrams in a small number of topological classes, providing a simple way to determine the infrared (small momenta) behavior of t…
We present a new perturbative formulation of non-equilibrium thermal field theory, based upon non-homogeneous free propagators and time-dependent vertices. Our approach to non-equilibrium dynamics yields time-dependent diagrammatic perturbation series that are free of pinch singularities, without the need to resort to quasi-particle approximation or effective resummations of finite widths. In our formalism, the avoidance of pinch singularities is a consequence of the consistent inclusion of finite-time effects and the proper consideration of the time of observation. After introducing a physica…
In the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model with generic order $q \ge 4$ random couplings, we compute the critical temperature relating the Majorana fermions high temperature perturbative vacuum to the vacuum where the replica diagonal collective field $G(τ, τ')$ condenses. We study, by a finite temperature diagrammatic analysis, the effective action of an auxiliary Hubbard-Stratonovich bilocal field related to $G(τ, τ')$ in the large $N$ limit. Subtelties that arise in switching from the operatorial to the functional integral representation of the SYK thermal partition function are also discussed.
Many-body electron-electron interaction effects are theoretically considered in monolayer graphene from a continuum effective field-theoretic perspective by going beyond the standard leading-order perturbative renormalization group (RG) analysis. Given that the bare fine structure constant in graphene is of order unity, which is neither small to justify a perturbative expansion nor large enough for strong-coupling theories to be applicable, the problem is a difficult one, with some similarity to 2+1-dimensional strong-coupling quantum electrodynamics (QED). In this work, we take a systematic a…
We apply large $N$ diagrammatic techniques for theories with double-trace interactions to the leading corrections to $C_J$, the coefficient of a conserved current two-point function, and $C_T$, the coefficient of the stress-energy tensor two-point function. We study in detail two famous conformal field theories in continuous dimensions, the scalar $O(N)$ model and the Gross-Neveu model. For the $O(N)$ model, where the answers for the leading large $N$ corrections to $C_J$ and $C_T$ were derived long ago using analytic bootstrap, we show that the diagrammatic approach reproduces them correctly.…
Applying Feynman diagrammatics to non-fermionic strongly correlated models with local constraints might seem generically impossible for two separate reasons: (i) the necessity to have a Gaussian (non-interacting) limit on top of which the perturbative diagrammatic expansion is generated by Wick's theorem, and (ii) the Dyson's collapse argument implying that the expansion in powers of coupling constant is divergent. We show that for arbitrary classical lattice models both problems can be solved/circumvented by reformulating the high-temperature expansion (more generally, any discrete representa…
We consider a massive scalar field with quartic self-interaction $λ/4!\,ϕ^4$ in de~Sitter spacetime and present a diagrammatic expansion that describes the field as driven by stochastic noise. This is compared with the Feynman diagrams in the Keldysh basis of the Amphichronous (Closed-Time-Path) Field Theoretical formalism. For all orders in the expansion, we find that the diagrams agree when evaluated in the leading infrared approximation, i.e. to leading order in $m^2/H^2$, where $m$ is the mass of the scalar field and $H$ is the Hubble rate. As a consequence, the correlation functions compu…
We compute the exact, all energy scale, 4-point function of the large $N$ double-scaled SYK model, by using only combinatorial tools and relating the correlation functions to sums over chord diagrams. We apply the result to obtain corrections to the maximal Lyapunov exponent at low temperatures. We present the rules for the non-perturbative diagrammatic description of correlation functions of the entire model. The latter indicate that the model can be solved by a reduction of a quantum deformation of SL$(2)$, that generalizes the Schwarzian to the complete range of energies.
