Galaxy clusters are some of largest structures in the universe. These very dense environments tend to be home to higher numbers of evolved galaxies that what is found in lower density environments. It is well known that dense environments can influence the evolution of galaxies through the removal of the neutral gas (HI) reservoirs which fuel star formation. It is unclear which environment has a stronger effect: the local environment (i.e. the substructure within the cluster), or the cluster itself. Using the new HI data from the Westerbork Coma Survey, we explore the average HI content of galaxies across the cluster comparing galaxies that reside in substructure to those that do not. We apply to the Dressler-Shectman test to our newly compiled redshift catalogue of the Coma cluster to search for substructure. With so few of the Coma galaxies directly detected in HI, we use the HI stacking technique to probe average HI content below what can be directly detected. Using the Dressler-Shectman test, we find 15 substructures within the footprint of the Westerbork Coma Survey. We compare the average HI content for galaxies within substructure to those not in substructure. Using the HI stacking technique, we find that the Coma galaxies (for which are not detected in HI) are more than 10--50 times more HI deficient than expected which supports the scenario of an extremely efficient and rapid quenching mechanism. By studying the galaxies that are not directly detected in HI, we also find Coma to be more HI deficient than previously thought.

The rich and nearby Coma cluster of galaxies is known to have substructure. We aim to create a more detailed picture of this substructure by searching directly for bound companions around individual giant members. We have used two catalogs of Coma galaxies, one covering the cluster core for a detailed morphological analysis, another covering the outskirts. The separation limit between possible companions (secondaries) and giants (primaries) is chosen as M_B = -19 and M_R = -20, respectively for the two catalogs. We have created pseudo-clusters by shuffling positions or velocities of the primar…
Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are spatially extended, low surface brightness stellar systems with regular elliptical-like morphology found in a wide range of environments. Studies of the internal dynamics and dark matter content of UDGs that would elucidate their formation and evolution have been hampered by their low surface brightnesses. Here we present spatially resolved velocity profiles, stellar velocity dispersions, ages and metallicities for 9 UDGs in the Coma cluster. We use intermediate-resolution spectra obtained with Binospec, the MMT's new high-throughput optical spectrograph. We d…
We explore the properties of early-type galaxies (ETGs), including ellipticals (E) and lenticulars (S0), in rich environments such as clusters of galaxies (Virgo and Coma). The L_24/L_K distribution of ETGs in both Virgo and Coma clusters shows that some S0s have a much larger L_24/L_K ratio (0.5 to ~2 dex) than the bulk of the ETG population. This could be interpreted as an enhanced star formation rate in these lenticulars. We compare the optical colors of galaxies in these two clusters and investigate the nature of these sources with a large L24/L_K ratio by looking at their spatial distribu…
We present the blind Westerbork Coma Survey probing the HI content of the Coma galaxy cluster with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The survey covers the inner $\sim$ 1 Mpc around the cluster centre, extending out to 1.5 Mpc towards the south-western NGC 4839 group. The survey probes the atomic gas in the entire Coma volume down to a sensitivity of $\sim$ 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$. Combining automated source finding with source extraction at optical redshifts and visual verification, we obtained 40 HI detections of which 24 are new. Over half of the sample displays pe…
Understanding the peculiar properties of Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) via spectroscopic analysis is a challenging task requiring very deep observations and exquisite data reduction. In this work we perform one of the most complete characterisations of the stellar component of UDGs to date using deep optical spectroscopic data from OSIRIS at GTC. We measure radial and rotation velocities, star formation histories (SFH) and mean population parameters, such as ages and metallicities, for a sample of five UDG candidates in the Coma cluster. From the radial velocities, we confirm the Coma membersh…
The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS) is a deep $u^*giz$ survey targeting the Virgo cluster of galaxies at 16.5~Mpc. This survey provides high-quality photometry over an $\sim$ 100 deg$^2$ region straddling the constellations of Virgo and Coma Berenices. This sightline through the Milky Way is noteworthy in that it intersects two of the most prominent substructures in the Galactic halo: the Virgo Over-Density (VOD) and Sagittarius stellar stream (close to its bifurcation point). In this paper, we use deep $u^*gi$ imaging from the NGVS to perform tomography of the VOD and Sagittarius …
We analyze the 3D morphology and kinematics of 13 open clusters (OCs) located within 500 pc of the Sun, using Gaia EDR3 and kinematic data from literature. Members of OCs are identified using the unsupervised machine learning method StarGO, using 5D parameters (X, Y, Z, $μ_α\cosδ, μ_δ$). The OC sample covers an age range of 25Myr--2.65Gyr. We correct the asymmetric distance distribution due to the parallax error using Bayesian inversion. The uncertainty in the corrected distance for a cluster at 500~pc is 3.0--6.3~pc, depending on the intrinsic spatial distribution of its members. We determine…
The stellar content of the intracluster light (ICL) provides unique insight into the hierarchical assembly process of galaxy clusters. However, the ICL is difficult to study due to its low surface brightness and large physical extent. We present optical spectra of three ICL regions in the Coma cluster, located between 100-180kpc from their nearest BCGs: NGC4889 and NGC4874. The mean surface brightness of the three ICL regions are μ$_g$~25.3-26.2mag arcsec$^{-2}$. IFU spectroscopy with 13.5 hr on-source integration time were acquired as part of an ancillary program within the SDSS-IV MaNGA surve…
The main goals of the present work are (i) to study the substructure content of a representative, X-ray selected sample of 31 galaxy clusters, as traced by the spatial distribution of their red-sequence galaxies, and (ii) to compare it to that observed in the intracluster medium distribution. Our substructure indicators are the asymmetry test, $β$, the residuals of the galaxy surface density map, $Δ_Σ$, and the Fourier elongation, $FE$. We probe the clusters core with secondary tests: the offset between the central brightest cluster galaxy and the X-ray emission peak, $Δr_{\mathrm{BCG-X}}$, th…
Ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) reveal extreme properties. Here we compile the largest study to date of 85 globular cluster (GC) systems around UDGs in the Coma cluster, using new deep ground-based imaging of the known UDGs and existing imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope of their GC systems. We find that the richness of GC systems in UDGs generally exceeds that found in normal dwarf galaxies of the same stellar mass. These GC-rich UDGs imply halos more massive than expected from the standard stellar mass-halo mass relation. The presence of such overly massive halos presents a significant ch…
The Antlia Cluster is a nearby, dynamically young structure, and its proximity provides a valuable opportunity for detailed study of galaxy and group accretion onto clusters. We present a deep HI mosaic completed as part of spectral line commissioning of the Karoo Array Telescope (KAT-7), and identify infrared counterparts from the WISE extended source catalog to study neutral atomic gas content and star formation within the cluster. We detect 37 cluster members out to a radius of ~0.9 Mpc with M_HI > 5x10^7 M_Sun. Of these, 35 are new HI detections, 27 do not have previous spectroscopic redsh…
Cluster substructure and ram pressure stripping in individual galaxies are among the primary evidence for the ongoing growth of galaxy clusters as they accrete galaxies and groups from their surroundings. We present a multi-wavelength study of the center of the Hydra I galaxy cluster, including exquisite new MeerKAT HI and DECam Halpha imaging which reveal conclusive evidence for ram pressure stripping in NGC 3312, NGC 3314a and NGC 3314b through compressed HI contours, well-defined HI tails, and ongoing star formation in the stripped gas. In particular, we quantify the stripped material in NG…
We report the detection of thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZ) fluctuations in the intracluster medium (ICM) of Coma cluster observed with ${\it Planck}$. The SZ data links the maximum observable X-ray scale to the large Mpc scale, extending our knowledge of the power spectrum of ICM fluctuations. Deprojecting the 2-d SZ perturbations into 3-d pressure fluctuations, we find an amplitude spectrum which peaks at $δP/P = 33\pm 12\%$ and $74\pm19\%$ in the $15'$ and $40'$ radius region, respectively. We perform tests to ensure fluctuations are intrinsic to the cluster and not due to noise contam…
To understand the stellar population content of dwarf early-type galaxies (dEs) and its environmental dependence, we compare the slopes and intrinsic scatter of color-magnitude relations (CMRs) for three nearby clusters, Fornax, Virgo and Coma. Additionally we present and compare internal color profiles of these galaxies to identify central blue regions with younger stars. We use the imaging of the HST/ACS Fornax cluster in the magnitude range of -18.7 <= M_g' <= -16.0, to derive magnitudes, colors and color profiles, which we compare with literature measurements. Based on analysis of the colo…

With the aim of providing the complete demography of galaxies in the local Universe, including their nuclear properties, we present SPRING, a complete census of local galaxies limited to the spring quarter of the Northern sky (10h< RA <16h; 0< Dec <65). The SPRING catalogue is a flux- and volume-limited sample (r < 17.7 mag, cz < 10000 km/s) of 30597 galaxies, including the Virgo, Coma and A1367 clusters. To inspect possible secular and environmental dependencies of the various nuclear excitation properties (SF vs. AGN), we perform a multidimensional analysis by dividing the sample according t…
We have initiated a program to study the baryon content and dynamic state of galaxy clusters. Here we present results primarily from XMM-Newton observations of two optically-selected galaxy clusters, A1095 ($z \simeq 0.210$) and A1926 ($z \simeq 0.136$). We find that both of them are actually cluster pairs at similar redshifts. We characterize the temperatures of these individual clusters through X-ray spectral fits and then estimate their gravitational masses. We show a rich set of substructures, including large position offsets between the diffuse X-ray centroids and the brightest galaxies o…
We present ALMA Band 6 (nu=233GHz, lambda=1.3mm) continuum observations towards 68 'normal' star-forming galaxies within two Coma-like progenitor structures at z=2.10 and 2.47, from which ISM masses are derived, providing the largest census of molecular gas mass in overdense environments at these redshifts. Our sample comprises galaxies with a stellar mass range of 1x10^9M_sun - 4x10^11M_sun with a mean M_*~6x10^10M_sun. Combining these measurements with multiwavelength observations and SED modeling, we characterize the gas mass fraction and the star formation efficiency, and infer the impact …
Using MUSE spectra, we investigate how pre-processing and accretion onto a galaxy cluster affect the integrated stellar population properties of dwarf early-type galaxies (dEs). We analyze a sample of nine dEs with stellar masses of $\rm \sim 10^9 \, M_\odot$, which were accreted ($\sim$ 2-3 Gyr ago) onto the Virgo cluster as members of a massive galaxy group. We derive their stellar population properties, namely age, metallicity ([M/H]), and the abundance ratio of $α$ elements ([$α$/Fe]), by fitting observed spectral indices with a robust, iterative procedure, and infer their star formation h…
We present a detailed stellar population analysis for a sample of 24 early-type galaxies belonging to the rich cluster RXJ0152.7-1357 at z=0.83. We have derived the age, metallicity, abundance pattern and star formation history for each galaxy individually, to further characterize this intermediate-z reference cluster. We then study how these stellar population parameters depend on local environment. This provides a better understanding on the formation timescales and subsequent evolution of the substructures in this cluster. We have also explored the evolutionary link between z$\sim$0.8 ETGs …
The hierarchical model of structure formation is a key prediction of the Lambda cold dark matter model, which can be tested by studying the large-scale environment and the substructure content of massive galaxy clusters. We present here a detailed analysis of the clusters RXCJ0225.9-4154, RXCJ0528.9-3927, and RXCJ2308.3-0211, as part of a sample of massive X-ray luminous clusters located at intermediate redshifts. We used a multiwavelength analysis, combining WFI photometric observations, VIMOS spectroscopy, and the X-ray surface brightness maps. We investigated the optical morphology of the c…
As a result of their internal dynamical coherence, thin stellar streams formed by disrupting globular clusters (GCs) can act as detectors of dark matter (DM) substructure in the Galactic halo. Perturbations induced by close flybys amplify into detectable density gaps, providing a probe both of the abundance and of the masses of DM subhaloes. Here, we use N-body simulations to show that the Galactic population of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) can also produce gaps (and clumps) in GC streams, and so may confuse the detection of DM subhaloes. We explore the cases of streams analogous to the obser…
We use the GALEX data of the GUViCS survey to construct the NUV luminosity function of the Virgo cluster over ~ 300 deg.2, an area covering the cluster and its surrounding regions up to ~ 1.8 virial radii. The NUV luminosity function is also determined for galaxies of different morphological type and NUV-i colour, and for the different substructures within the cluster. These luminosity functions are robust vs. statistical corrections since based on a sample of 833 galaxies mainly identified as cluster members with spectroscopic redshift (808) or high-quality optical scaling relations (10). We …
Large scale surveys of the prominent members of the Local Group have provided compelling evidence for the hierarchical formation of massive galaxies, revealing a wealth of substructure that is thought to be the debris from ancient and on-going accretion events. In this paper, we compare two extant surveys of the M31-M33 subgroup of galaxies; the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) of the stellar structure, and a combination of observations of the HI gaseous content, detected at 21cm. Our key finding is a marked lack of spatial correlation between these two components on all scales, wi…
The balance of evidence indicates that individual galaxies and groups or clusters of galaxies are embedded in enormous distributions of cold, weakly interacting dark matter. These dark matter 'halos' provide the scaffolding for all luminous structure in the universe, and their properties comprise an essential part of the current cosmological model. I review the internal properties of dark matter halos, focussing on the simple, universal trends predicted by numerical simulations of structure formation. Simulations indicate that halos should all have roughly the same spherically-averaged density…
Recently a population of large, very low surface brightness, spheroidal galaxies was identified in the Coma cluster. The apparent survival of these Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) in a rich cluster suggests that they have very high masses. Here we present the stellar kinematics of Dragonfly 44, one of the largest Coma UDGs, using a 33.5 hr integration with DEIMOS on the Keck II telescope. We find a velocity dispersion of 47 km/s, which implies a dynamical mass of M_dyn=0.7x10^10 M_sun within its deprojected half-light radius of r_1/2=4.6 kpc. The mass-to-light ratio is M/L=48 M_sun/L_sun, and th…
Dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies are prime targets for present and future gamma-ray telescopes hunting for indirect signals of particle dark matter. The interpretation of the data requires careful assessment of their dark matter content in order to derive robust constraints on candidate relic particles. Here, we use an optimised spherical Jeans analysis to reconstruct the `astrophysical factor' for both annihilating and decaying dark matter in 21 known dSphs. Improvements with respect to previous works are: (i) the use of more flexible luminosity and anisotropy profiles to minimise biases, (ii…
