Following recent work, we discuss waves in a warm ideal two-fluid plasma consisting of electrons and ions starting from a completely general, ideal two-fluid dispersion relation. The plasma is characterised by five variables: the electron and ion magnetisations, the squared electron and ion sound speeds, and a parameter describing the angle between the propagation vector and the magnetic field. The dispersion relation describes 6 pairs of waves which we label S, A, F, M, O, and X. Varying the angle, it is argued that parallel and perpendicular propagation (with respect to the magnetic field) exhibit unique behaviour. This behaviour is characterised by the crossing of wave modes which is prohibited at oblique angles. We identify up to 6 different parameter regimes where a varying number of exact mode crossings in the special parallel or perpendicular orientations can occur. We point out how any ion-electron plasma has a critical magnetisation (or electron cyclotron frequency) at which the cutoff ordering changes, leading to different crossing behaviour. These are relevant for exotic plasma conditions found in pulsar and magnetar environments. Our discussion is fully consistent with ideal relativistic MHD and contains light waves. Additionally, exploiting the general nature of the dispersion relation, phase and group speed diagrams can be computed at arbitrary wavelengths for any parameter regime. Finally, we recover earlier approximate dispersion relations that focus on low-frequency limits and make direct correspondences with some selected kinetic theory results.
A comment on `Wave-breaking Limits for relativistic electrostatic waves in a one-dimensional warm plasma' Phys. Plasmas 13 123102 by R. M. G. M. Trines and P. A. Norreys
The maximum sustainable amplitude, so-called wave breaking limit, of a nonlinear plasma wave in arbitrary mass ratio warm plasmas is obtained in the non-relativistic regime. Using the method of Sagdeev potential a general wave breaking formula is derived by taking into account the dynamics of both the species having finite temperature. It is found, that the maximum amplitude of the plasma wave decreases monotonically with the increase in temperature and mildly increases with increase in mass ratio.
The effect of electron temperature on the space-time evolution of nonlinear plasma oscillations in an inhomogeneous plasma is studied using a one-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) code. In contrast to the conventional wisdom, it is found that for an inhomogeneous plasma, there exists a critical value of electron temperature beyond which wave breaking does not occur. This novel result, which is of relevance to present day laser plasma experiments, has been explained on the basis of interplay between electron thermal pressure and background inhomogeneity.
In this paper, the effect of finite electron temperature on the space-time evolution and breaking of a large amplitude relativistically intense electron plasma wave has been studied, using a 1-D relativistic Particle-in-Cell (PIC) code. We have found that for phase velocities for which $γ_ϕ\ll 1 + \frac{k_BT_e}{mc^2}$, the wave damps within a few plasma period and essentially follows the relativistic Landau Damping rate predicted by Buti. In the opposite regime (i.e. for $γ_ϕ\gg 1 + \frac{k_BT_e}{mc^2}$) we have observed that waves propagate through the system for a long period of time and in …
In the present paper we propose the use of desnity matrix formalism for the calculation of the atomic spectroscopic properties of autoionizing states in dense plasmas, i.e. warm dense matter and strongly coupled plasmas. This is motivated by the importance of taking into account the effect of the electric microfield generated by the plasma charge constituents in the calculation of the atomic populations of autoionizing states. For autoionizing states, electron densities justifying the statistical approach exceed solid density bringing serious doubts to the statistical approach even in dense pl…
K-line profiles emitted from a warm dense plasma environment are used for diagnostics of Ar droplet plasmas created by high energy laser pulses. Analyzing the temporally and spacially integrated spectra, we infer temperature gradients within the Ar droplet from cold temperatures of the order of some 10 eV up to higher temperatures of 250 eV and beyond. To characterize the influence of the warm and dense environment on the emitters, plasma screening is considered within a perturbative approach to the Hamiltonian. The plasma affects the many-particle system resulting in energy shifts of emission…
The screening of a test charge by partially degenerate non-ideal free electrons at conditions related to warm dense matter and dense plasmas is investigated using linear response theory and the local field correction based on ab inito Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations data. The analysis of the obtained results is performed by comparing to the random phase approximation and the Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjölander approximation. The applicability of the long-wavelength approximation for the description of screening is investigated. The impact of electronic exchange-correlations effects on structural proper…
Resonant three-wave coupling is an important mechanism via which waves interact in a nonlinear medium. When the medium is a magnetized warm-fluid plasma, a previously-unknown formula for the coupling coefficients is derived by solving the fluid-Maxwell's equations to second order using multiscale perturbative expansions. The formula is not only general but also evaluable, whereby numerical values of the coupling coefficient can be determined for any three resonantly interacting waves propagating at arbitrary angles. As one example, coupling coefficient governing laser scattering is evaluated. …
Hollow plasma channels are attractive for lepton acceleration because they provide intrinsic emittance preservation regimes. However, beam breakup instabilities dominate the dynamics. Here, we show that thin, warm hollow channels can sustain large-amplitude plasma waves ready for high-quality positron acceleration. We verify that the combination of warm electrons and thin hollow channel enables positron focusing structures. Such focusing wakefields unlock beam breakup damping mechanisms. We demonstrate that such channels emerge self-consistently during the long-term plasma dynamics in the blow…
The Warm Plasma Dispersion Relation, for waves in the electron cyclotron resonance range of frequencies, can be cast into the form of a bi-quadratic equation for $N_\perp$, where the coefficients are a function of $N_\perp^2$ and an iterative procedure is required to obtain a solution. However, this iterative procedure is not well understood and fails to converge towards a solution at the second harmonic resonance layer. In particular at higher densities where the wave can couple to an electron Bernstein wave. This paper focuses on a solution to the poor convergence of the iterative method, en…
The 3-D exact analytical solutions of ideal two fluid plasma, single fluid plasma (MHD) and neutral fluid equations have been found using physically justifiable assumptions. Surprisingly these solutions satisfy all non-linearities in the systems. It is pointed out that these solutions explain the fundamental mechanism behind the creation of vast variety of ordered structures in plasmas and fluids. In the limiting case of two dimensional (2-D) dependence of fields, the theoretical model for plasma is applied to explain the formation of spicules in solar chromosphere. It is pointed out that the …
A new formulation of the Kubo-Greenwood conductivity for average atom models is given. The new formulation improves upon previous by explicitly including the ionic-structure factor. Calculations based on this new expression lead to much improved agreement with ab initio results for DC conductivity of warm dense hydrogen and beryllium, and for thermal conductivity of hydrogen. We also give and test a slightly modified Ziman-Evans formula for the resistivity that includes a non-free electron density of states, thus removing an ambiguity in the original Ziman-Evans formula. Again results based on…
In a recent paper (Krishan 2021), a two-fluid description of a partially ionized plasma was presented in which electron fluid and the neutral fluid were combined appropriately into one fluid, christened as ENe fluid, and treat the ions as the second fluid. Some of the electrostatic modes of this two-fluid system were studied. Here, I discuss another possibility in which the ion fluid and the neutral fluid are combined into one fluid, christened as INe fluid, and treat the electrons as the second fluid. There can be a huge variation between the relative masses of the neutrals and the ions. Thus…
A numerical tool for analysing spatially anisotropic electron populations in electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasmas has been developed, using a trial-and-error electron energy distribution function (EEDF) fitting method. The method has been tested on space-resolved warm electrons in the energy range $2-20\,\mathrm{keV}$, obtained from self-consistent simulations modelling only electron dynamics in ECR devices, but lacked real-world validation. For experimentally benchmarking the method, we attempted to numerically reproduce the experimental X-ray emission spectrum measured from an argon pl…
We present a model for electron-ion transport in Warm Dense Matter that incorporates Coulomb coupling effects into the quantum Boltzmann equation of Uehling and Uhlenbeck through the use of a statistical potential of mean force. Although this model has been derived rigorously in the classical limit [S.D. Baalrud and J. Daligault, Physics of Plasmas 26, 8, 082106 (2019)], its quantum generalization is complicated by the uncertainty principle. Here we apply an existing model for the potential of mean force based on the quantum Ornstein-Zernike equation coupled with an average-atom model [C. E. S…
Very simple explicit analytical expressions are discussed, which are able to describe the dispersion relations of longitudinal waves in strongly coupled plasma systems such as one-component plasma and weakly screened Yukawa fluids with a very good accuracy. Applications to other systems with soft pairwise interactions are briefly discussed.
Pulse pile-up in pulse-height energy analyzers increases when the incident rate of pulses increases relative to the inverse of the dead time per pulse of the detection system. Changes in the observed energy distributions with incident rate and detector-electronics-formed pulse shape then occur. We focus on weak high energy tails in X-ray spectra, important for measurements on partially ionized, warm, pure-hydrogen plasma. A first-principles two-photon pulse-pile-up model is derived specific to trapezoidal-shaped pulses; quantitative agreement is found between the measurements and the model pre…
As an application of the completely general, ideal two-fluid analysis of waves in a warm ion-electron plasma, where six unique wave pair labels (S, A, F, M, O, and X) were identified, we here connect to the vast body of literature on whistler waves. We show that all six mode pairs can demonstrate whistling behaviour, when we allow for whistling of both descending and ascending frequency types, and when we study the more general case of oblique propagation to the background magnetic field. We show how the general theory recovers all known approximate group speed expressions for both classical w…
We investigate the energy loss characteristics of warm dense matter (WDM) and dense plasmas concentrating on the influence of electronic correlations. The basis for our analysis is a recently developed ab initio Quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) based machine-learning representation of the static local field correction (LFC) [Dornheim et al., J. Chem. Phys. 151, 194104 (2019)], which provides an accurate description of the dynamical density response function of the electron gas at the considered parameters. We focus on the polarization-induced stopping power due to free electrons, the friction functio…
A non-relativistic multi-fluid plasma axisymmetric equilibrium model was developed recently to account for the presence of an energetic electron fluid in addition to thermal electron and ion fluids. The equilibrium formulation of a multi-fluid plasma with relativistic energetic electrons is developed and reported in this paper. Relativistic effects in a fluid model approximation can appear in two ways: due to a large macroscopic fluid velocity comparable to the speed of light and large particle's microscopic random motion which becomes significant if the temperature becomes comparable to or la…
It is economical to devise ways and means to simplify a multi-species particle system. The single fluid MHD description of a plasma is sufficiently adequate to study plasma phenomena . A plasma containing multi-species of particles can also be described by representing each particle species by the corresponding fluid. A partially ionized plasma consisting of electrons, ions and the neutral particles can be described as a single fluid by appropriately combining the dynamics of each of the species. The three component plasma can also be reduced to a two-fluid system. The most obvious way is to c…
The transition of a warm dense fluid hydrogen from insulator to a conducting state at pressures of the order of 20-300 GPa and temperatures of 1000-5000 K has been the subject of active scientific research over the past few decades. The use of various experimental methods has not yet led to obtaining reliable consistent results, and despite numerous attempts, theoretical methods have not yet been able to explain the existing discrepancies, as well as the microscopic nature of the mechanism for the transition of hydrogen fluid to a conducting state. In this work, we have discovered a key mechan…
Complex plasmas consist of microparticles embedded in a low-temperature plasma and allow investigating various effects by tracing the motion of these microparticles. Dust density waves appear in complex plasmas as self-excited acoustic waves in the microparticle fluid at low neutral gas pressures. Here we show that various properties of these waves depend on the position of the microparticle cloud with respect to the plasma sheath and explain this finding in terms of the underlying ion-drift instability. These results may be helpful in better understanding the propagation of dust density waves…
A comprehensive two-fluid nonlinear theory of magnetic reconnection driven at a single, tearing-stable, rational surface embedded in an H-mode tokamak plasma is presented. The surface is assumed to be resonant with one of the dominant helical harmonics of an applied resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP). The theory described in this paper is highly relevant to the problem of understanding the physics of RMP-induced edge localized mode (ELM) suppression in tokamak plasmas.
A number of physical processes in laser-plasma interaction can be described with the two-fluid plasma model. We report on a solver for the three-dimensional two-fluid plasma model equations. This solver is particularly suited for simulating the interaction between short laser pulses with plasmas. The fluid solver relies on two-step Lax-Wendroff split with a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme, and we use the PseudoSpectral Analytical Time-Domain (PSATD) method to solve Maxwell's curl equations. Overall, this method is only based on finite difference schemes and fast Fourier transforms and does not…
