Two-mode squeezed number states (TMSNS) are natural generalization of two-mode squeezed vacuum states. It has been known that every TMSNS is entangled whenever the squeezing parameter is non-zero. For a pair of entangled pure states Nielsen's majorization theorem tells us whether one state can be transformed into the other state through local operation and classical communication based on the majorization property on their probability distributions of Schmidt bases. In this report we find two examples of majorization relations for a set of TMSNS.
We use majorization and confidence intervals as a convenient tool to compare the uncertainty in photon number for different quantum light states. To this end majorization is formulated in terms of confidence intervals. As a suitable case study we apply this tool to sub- and super-Posissonian behavior and bunching and anti- bunching effects. We focus on the most significant classical and nonclassical states, such as Glauber coherent, thermal, photon number, and squeezed states. We show that majorization provides a more complete analysis that in some relevant situations contradicts the predictio…
We prove that a beam splitter, one of the most common optical components, fulfills several classes of majorization relations, which govern the amount of quantum entanglement that it can generate. First, we show that the state resulting from k photons impinging on a beam splitter majorizes the corresponding state with any larger photon number k'>k, implying that the entanglement monotonically grows with k. Then, we examine parametric infinitesimal majorization relations as a function of the beam-splitter transmittance, and find that there exists a parameter region where majorization is again fu…
In this paper we investigate the relationship between direct-sum majorization formulation of uncertainty relations and entanglement, for the case of two and many observables. Our primary results are entanglement detection methods based on direct-sum majorization uncertainty relations. These nonlinear detectors provide a set of necessary conditions for detecting entanglement whose number grows with the dimension of the state being detected.
We improve the entropic uncertainty relations for position and momentum coarse-grained measurements. We derive the continuous, coarse-grained counterparts of the discrete uncertainty relations based on the concept of majorization. The obtained entropic inequalities involve two Rényi entropies of the same order, and thus go beyond the standard scenario with conjugated parameters. In a special case describing the sum of two Shannon entropies the majorization-based bounds significantly outperform the currently known results in the regime of larger coarse graining, and might thus be useful for ent…
Uncertainty relation is not only of fundamental importance to quantum mechanics, but also crucial to the quantum information technology. Recently, majorization formulation of uncertainty relations (MURs) have been widely studied, ranging from two measurements to multiple measurements. Here, for the first time, we experimentally investigate MURs for two measurements and multiple measurements in the high-dimensional systems, and study the intrinsic distinction between direct-product MURs and direct-sum MURs. The experimental results reveal that by taking different nonnegative Schur-concave funct…
We derive an entropic uncertainty relation for generalized positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) measurements via a direct-sum majorization relation using Schur concavity of entropic quantities in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Our approach provides a significant improvement of the uncertainty bound compared with previous majorization-based approaches [S. Friendland, V. Gheorghiu and G. Gour, Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 230401 (2013); A. E. Rastegin and K. Życzkowski, J. Phys. A, 49, 355301 (2016)], particularly by extending the direct-sum majorization relation first introduced in [Ł. Rudnick…
For probability vectors x and y, the catalytic majorization relation x prec_T y is defined to hold when there exists a probability vector z such that x otimes z is majorized by y otimes z. In this paper, an infinite family of functions is given such that, subject to some trivial restrictions, x prec_T y if and only if f_r(x) < f_r(y) for all functions f_r in the family. An outline of a proof of this result is provided. The catalytic majorization relation is known to provide a determination of which transformations of jointly held pure quantum states are possible using local operations and clas…
We examine the violation of the majorization relations between the eigenvalues of the full and reduced density operators of entangled states of composite systems and its detection using generalized entropic forms based on arbitrary concave functions. It is shown that the violation of these relations may not always be detected by the conditional von Neumann and Tsallis entropies (for any $q>0$). Families of smooth entropic forms which are always able to detect such violations are, however, provided. These features are then examined for particular sets of mixed states in a two-qudit system, whic…
The uncertainty relation lies at the heart of quantum theory and behaves as a non-classical constraint on the indeterminacies of incompatible observables in a system. In the literature, many experiments have been devoted to the test of the uncertainty relations which mainly focus on the pure states. In this work we test the novel majorization uncertainty relations of three incompatible observables using a series of mixed states with adjustable mixing degrees, and compare the compactness of various entropy uncertainty relations. The experimental results confirm that for general mixed quantum sy…
In spite of enormous theoretical and experimental progresses in quantum uncertainty relations, the experimental investigation of most current, and universal formalism of uncertainty relations, namely majorization uncertainty relations (MURs), has not been implemented yet. A significant problem is that previous studies on the classification of MURs only focus on their mathematical expressions, while the physical difference between various forms remains unknown. First, we use a guessing game formalism to study the MURs, which helps us disclosing their physical nature, and distinguishing the esse…
Majorization uncertainty relations are generalized for an arbitrary mixed quantum state $ρ$ of a finite size $N$. In particular, a lower bound for the sum of two entropies characterizing probability distributions corresponding to measurements with respect to arbitrary two orthogonal bases is derived in terms of the spectrum of $ρ$ and the entries of a unitary matrix $U$ relating both bases. The obtained results can also be formulated for two measurements performed on a single subsystem of a bipartite system described by a pure state, and consequently expressed as uncertainty relation for the s…
Majorization uncertainty relations are derived for arbitrary quantum operations acting on a finite-dimensional space. The basic idea is to consider submatrices of block matrices comprised of the corresponding Kraus operators. This is an extension of the previous formulation, which deals with submatrices of a unitary matrix relating orthogonal bases in which measurements are performed. Two classes of majorization relations are considered: one related to tensor product of probability vectors and another one related to their direct sum. We explicitly discuss an example of a pair of one-qubit oper…
Entanglement detection criteria are developed within the framework of the majorization formulation of uncertainty. The primary results are two theorems asserting linear and nonlinear separability criteria based on majorization relations, the violation of which would imply entanglement. Corollaries to these theorems yield infinite sets of scalar entanglement detection criteria based on quasi-entropic measures of disorder. Examples are analyzed to probe the efficacy of the derived criteria in detecting the entanglement of bipartite Werner states. Characteristics of the majorization relation as a…
The most basic local conversion is local operations and classical communications (LOCC), which is also the most natural restriction in quantum information processing. We investigate the conversions between the ground states in quantum critical systems via LOCC and propose an novel method to reveal the different convertibility via majorization relation when a quantum phase transition occurs. The ground-state local convertibility in the one-dimensional transverse field Ising model is studied. It is shown that the LOCC convertibility changes nearly at the phase transition point. The relation betw…
We analyze entropic uncertainty relations in a finite dimensional Hilbert space and derive several strong bounds for the sum of two entropies obtained in projective measurements with respect to any two orthogonal bases. We improve the recent bounds by Coles and Piani, which are known to be stronger than the well known result of Maassen and Uffink. Furthermore, we find a novel bound based on majorization techniques, which also happens to be stronger than the recent results involving largest singular values of submatrices of the unitary matrix connecting both bases. The first set of new bounds g…
We compute Rényi entropies for the statistics of a noisy simultaneous observation of two complementary observables in two-dimensional quantum systems. The relative amount of uncertainty between two states depends on the uncertainty measure used. These results are not reproduced by a more standard duality relation. We show that these behaviors are consistent with the lack of majorization relation between the corresponding statistics.
Uncertainties in flavor and mass eigenstates of neutrinos are considered within the majorization approach. Nontrivial bounds reflect the fact that neutrinos cannot be simultaneously in flavor and mass eigenstates. As quantitative measures of uncertainties, both the Rényi and Tsallis entropies are utilized. Within the current amount of experience concerning the mixing matrix, majorization uncertainty relations need to put values of only two parameters, viz. $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{13}$. That is, the majorization approach is applicable within the same framework as the Maassen-Uffink relation recently u…
Taking advantage of coherent light beams, we experimentally investigate the variancebased uncertainty relations and the optimal majorization uncertainty relation for the two-dimensional quantum mechanical system.Different from most of the experiments which devoted to record each individual quantum, we examine the uncertainty relations by measuring an ensemble of photons with two polarization degree of freedom characterized by the Stokes parameters which allow us to determine the polarization density matrix with high precision. The optimality of the recently proposed direct-sum majorization unc…
We prove that majorization relations hold step by step in the Quantum Fourier Transformation (QFT) for phase-estimation algorithms considered in the canonical decomposition. Our result relies on the fact that states which are mixed by Hadamard operators at any stage of the computation only differ by a phase. This property is a consequence of the structure of the initial state and of the QFT, based on controlled-phase operators and a single action of a Hadamard gate per qubit. As a consequence, Hadamard gates order the probability distribution associated to the quantum state, whereas controlled…
The majorization relation has been shown to be useful in classifying which transformations of jointly held quantum states are possible using local operations and classical communication. In some cases, a direct transformation between two states is not possible, but it becomes possible in the presence of another state (known as a catalyst); this situation is described mathematically by the trumping relation, an extension of majorization. The structure of the trumping relation is not nearly as well understood as that of majorization. We give an introduction to this subject and derive some new re…
Using the tomographic probability distribution (symplectic tomogram) describing the quantum state (instead of the wave function or density matrix) and properties of recently introduced tomographic entropy associated with the probability distribution, the new uncertainty relation for the tomographic entropy is obtained. Examples of the entropic uncertainty relation for squeezed states and solitons of the Bose--Einstein condensate are considered.
The uncertainty relations for the position and momentum of a quantum particle on a circle are identified minimized by the corresponding coherent states. The sqeezed states in the case of the circular motion are introduced and discussed in the context of the uncertainty relations.
We study universal uncertainty relations and present a method called joint probability distribution diagram to improve the majorization bounds constructed independently in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 230401 (2013)] and [J. Phys. A. 46, 272002 (2013)]. The results give rise to state independent uncertainty relations satisfied by any nonnegative Schur-concave functions. On the other hand, a remarkable recent result of entropic uncertainty relation is the direct-sum majorization relation. In this paper, we illustrate our bounds by showing how they provide a complement to that in [Phys. Rev. A. 89, 052…
Entropic uncertainty relations in a finite dimensional Hilbert space are investigated. Making use of the majorization technique we derive explicit lower bounds for the sum of Rényi entropies describing probability distributions associated with a given pure state expanded in eigenbases of two observables. Obtained bounds are expressed in terms of the largest singular values of submatrices of the unitary rotation matrix. Numerical simulations show that for a generic unitary matrix of size N = 5 our bound is stronger than the well known result of Maassen and Uffink (MU) with a probability larger …
It is shown by examples that the position uncertainty on a circle, proposed recently by Kowalski and Rembieliński [J. Phys. A 35 (2002) 1405] is not consistent with the state localization. We argue that the relevant uncertainties and uncertainty relations (UR's) on a circle are that based on the Gram-Robertson matrix. Several of these generalized UR's are displayed and related criterions for squeezed states are discussed.
It is shown that any two Hamiltonians H(t) and H'(t) of N dimensional quantum systems can be related by means of time-dependent canonical transformations (CT). The dynamical symmetry group of system with Hamiltonian H(t) coincides with the invariance group of H(t). Quadratic Hamiltonians can be diagonalized by means of linear time-dependent CT. The diagonalization can be explicitly carried out in the case of stationary and some nonstationary quadratic H. Linear CT can diagonalize the uncertainty matrix σ(ρ) for canonical variables p_k, q_j in any state ρ, i.e., σ(ρ) is symplectically congruent…
We develop a general operational framework that formalizes the concept of conditional uncertainty in a measure-independent fashion. Our formalism is built upon a mathematical relation which we call conditional majorization. We define conditional majorization and, for the case of classical memory, we provide its thorough characterization in terms of monotones, i.e., functions that preserve the partial order under conditional majorization. We demonstrate the application of this framework by deriving two types of memory-assisted uncertainty relations: (1) a monotone-based conditional uncertainty …

Employing the lattice theory on majorization, we investigate the universal quantum uncertainty relation for any number observables and general measurement. We find: 1. The least bounds of the universal uncertainty relations can only be properly defined in the lattice theory; 2. Contrary to variance and entropy, the metric induced by the majorization lattice implies an intrinsic structure of the quantum uncertainty; 3. The lattice theory correlates the optimization of uncertainty relation with the entanglement transformation under local quantum operation and classical communication. Interesting…
Majorization and trumping are two partial orders which have proved useful in quantum information theory. We show some relations between these two partial orders and generalized Dirichlet polynomials, Mellin transforms, and completely monotone functions. These relations are used to prove a succinct generalization of Turgut's characterization of trumping.
In the preceding Comment (quant-ph/0209032) Trifonov disputes our recently proposed uncertainty relations for a quantum particle on a circle. He states that (i) the quantity $Δ^2(\hatϕ)$ introduced by us representing the uncertainty of the angle is not a proper measure of the position uncertainty and therefore the proposed inequalities can hardly be qualified as a relevant uncertainty relations on a circle; and that (ii) the most suitable uncertainty relations on a circle are those based on the Gram-Robertson matrix. It is shown by examples that both points are erroneous.
The ability of parameter recently proposed by Sorensen et al. (Nature, 409, 63 (2001)) to characterize entanglement or inseparability is investigated for a system of two two-level atoms interacting with a single mode of radiation field. For comparison we employ the necessary and sufficient criterion of Peres and Horodecki for inseparability of bipartite states. We show that for diagonal atomic density matrix the parameter of Sorensen et al. fails to show entangled nature of collective atomic state whereas same state is inseparable in accordance with Peres-Horodecki criterion.
We introduce a binary relation on the finite discrete probability distributions which generalizes notions of majorization that have been studied in quantum information theory. Motivated by questions in thermodynamics, our relation describes the transitions induced by bistochastic maps in the presence of additional auxiliary systems which may become correlated in the process. We show that this relation is completely characterized by Shannon entropy H, which yields an interpretation of H in resource-theoretic terms, and admits a particularly simple proof of a known characterization of H in terms…
The uncertainty principle and entanglement are two fundamental, but yet not well understood, features of quantum theory. The uncertainty relation reflects the capability limit in acquiring the knowledge of different physical properties of a particle simultaneously, while on the other side, the quantum entanglement renders the entangled quanta lose their independence, including measurements imposed on them. By virtue of the majorization, here we establish a general correlation relation for quantum uncertainty and multipartite entanglement. Within this scheme, the optimization problems for entro…
k:th power (amplitude-)squeezed states are defined as the normalized states giving equality in the Schroedinger-Robertson uncertainty relation for the real and imaginary parts of the k:th power of the one-mode annihilation operator. Equivalently they are the set of normalized eigenstates (for all possible complex eigenvalues) of the Bogolubov transformed "k:th power annihilation operators". Expressed in the number representation the eigenvalue equation leads to a three term recursion relation for the expansion coefficients, which can be explicitly solved in the cases k = 1, 2. The solutions ar…
We study the relation between the sudden death and revival of the entanglement of two qubits in a common squeezed reservoir, and the normal decoherence, by getting closer to the Decoherence Free Subspace and calculating the effect on the death and revival times.
The time evolution of even and odd squeezed states, as well as that of squeezed number states, has been given in simple, analytic form. This follows experimental work on trapped ions which has demonstrated even and odd coherent states, number states, and squeezed (but not displaced) ground states. We review this situation and consider the extension to even and odd squeezed number states. Questions of uncertainty relations are also discussed.
Although the geometric phase for one-mode squeezed state had been studied in detail, the counterpart for two-mode squeezed state is vacant. It is be evaluated explicitly in this paper. Furthermore, the total phase factor is in an elegent form, which is just identical to one term of product of two squeezed operators. In addition, when this system undergoes cyclic evolutions, the corresponding geometric phase is obtained, which is just the sum of the counterparts of two isolated one-mode squeezed state. Finally, the relationship between the cyclic geomtric phase and entanglement of two-mode sque…
We consider the properties of the Shannon entropy for two probability distributions which stand in the relationship of majorization. Then we give a generalization of a theorem due to Uhlmann, extending it to infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Finally we show that for any quantum channel $Φ$, one has $S(Φ(ρ))=S(ρ)$ for all quantum states $ρ$ if and only if there exists an isometric operator $V$ such that $Φ(ρ)=VρV^*$.
Uncertainty relations are a distinctive characteristic of quantum theory that impose intrinsic limitations on the precision with which physical properties can be simultaneously determined. The modern work on uncertainty relations employs \emph{entropic measures} to quantify the lack of knowledge associated with measuring non-commuting observables. However, there is no fundamental reason for using entropies as quantifiers; any functional relation that characterizes the uncertainty of the measurement outcomes defines an uncertainty relation. Starting from a very reasonable assumption of invarian…
Using the f-deformed oscillator formalism, we introduce two types of squeezed coherent states for a Morse potential system (Morse-like squeezed coherent states) through the following definitions: i) as approximate eigenstates of a linear combination of f-deformed ladder operators and ii) as deformed photon-subtracted coherent states. For the states thus constructed we analyze their statistical properties, their uncertainty relations, and their temporal evolution on phase space.
Quantisation with Gaussian type states offers certain advantages over other quantisation schemes, in particular, they can serve to regularise formally discontinuous classical functions leading to well defined quantum operators. In this work we define a squeezed state quantisation in two dimensions using several families of squeezed states for one- and two-mode configurations. The completeness relations of the squeezed states are exploited in order to tackle the quantisation and semiclassical analysis of a constrained position dependent mass model with harmonic potential. The effects of the squ…
Characteristic uncertainty relations and their related squeezed states are briefly reviewed and compared in accordance with the generalizations of three equivalent definitions of the canonical coherent states. The standard SU(1,1) coherent states are shown to be the unique states that minimize the Schroedinger uncertainty relation for every pair of the three generators and the Robertson relation for the three generators. The characteristic uncertainty inequalities are naturally extended to the case of several states. It is shown that these inequalities can be written in the equivalent compleme…
Within a self-consistent framework of q-deformed Heisenberg algebra and its equivalent framework of q-deformed boson commutation relations, which relate to the under-cutting phenomenon of Heisenberg's minimal uncertainty relation, special q-deformed squeezed states are constructed. Besides the similar local maximum squeezing as the one in the undeformed case, new strong squeezing appears when the amplitude of the related coherent state increases to large values. A critical phenomenon appears at a large value of the amplitude: the variance of one component of the quadrature of the light field a…
In a 3-wave mixing process occurring in some nonlinear optical medium when }$a_{1}^{\dagger}${\small mode interacts with both }$a_{2}^{\dagger}% ${\small mode and }$a_{3}^{\dagger}${\small mode, we theoretically study the squeezing effect generated by the operator }$S_{3}\equiv \exp[μ(a_{1}% a_{2}-a_{1}^{\dagger}a_{2}^{\dagger})+ν(a_{1}a_{3}-a_{1}^{\dagger}% a_{3}^{\dagger})]${\small . The new 3-mode squeezed vacuum state in Fock space is derived, and the uncertainty relation for it is demonstrated, It turns out that }$S_{3}${\small may exhibit enhanced squeezing. By virtue of the technique of…
We study entropic uncertainty relations by using stepwise linear functions and quadratic functions. Two kinds of improved uncertainty lower bounds are constructed: the state-independent one based on the lower bound of Shannon entropy and the tighter state-dependent one based on the majorization techniques. The analytical results for qubit and qutrit systems with two or three measurement settings are explicitly derived, with detailed examples showing that they outperform the existing bounds. The case with the presence of quantum memory is also investigated.
A discrete completeness relation and a continuous one with a positive measure are found for the photon-added squeezed vacuum states. Extension to the photon-added squeezed one-photon states is considered. Photon-added coherent states on a circle are introduced. Their normalization and unity resolution relation are given.
