In this article, I use an operational formulation of the Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism to explore an approach to quantum mechanics in which the state is not the fundamental object. I first situate this project in the context of generalized probabilistic theories and argue that this framework may be understood as a means of drawing conclusions about the intratheoretic causal structure of quantum mechanics which are independent of any specific ontological picture. I then give an operational formulation of the Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism and show that in an operational theory which exhibits this isomorphism, several features of the theory which are usually regarded as properties of the quantum state can be derived from constraints on non-local correlations. This demonstrates that there is no need to postulate states to be the bearers of these properties, since they can be understood as consequences of a fundamental equivalence between multipartite and temporal correlations.
A generalization of the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism for completely positive maps between operator algebras is introduced. Particular emphasis is placed on the case of normal unital completely positive maps defined between von Neumann algebras. This generalization is applied especially to the study of maps which are covariant under actions of a symmetry group. We highlight with the example of, e.g., phase-shift-covariant quantum channels the ease of this method in particular in the case of a compact symmetry group. We also discuss the case of channels which are covariant under actions of the …
Positive maps which are not completely positive are used in quantum information theory as witnesses for convex sets of states, in particular as entanglement witnesses and more generally as witnesses for states having Schmidt number not greater than k. It is known that such witnesses are related to k-positive maps. In this article we propose a new proof for the correspondence between vectors having Schmidt number k and k-positive maps using Jamiolkowski's criterion for positivity of linear maps; to this aim, we also investigate the precise notion of the term "Jamiolkowski isomorphism". As conse…
We propose a definition of infinite dimensional Choi-Jamiolkowski state associated with a completely positive trace preserving map. We introduce the notion of Theta-KMS adjoint of a quantum Markov semigroup, which is identified with the time reversed semigroup. The break down of Theta-KMS symmetry (or Theta-standard quantum detailed balance in the sense of Fagnola-Umanita) is measured by means of the von Neumann relative entropy of the Choi-Jamiolkowski states associated with the semigroup and its Theta-KMS adjoint.
We give a mathematical formulation for the Choi-Jamiolkowski (CJ) correspondence in the infinite-dimensional case in the form close to one used in quantum information theory. We show that there is no need to use a limiting procedure to define "unnormalized maximally entangled state" and the corresponding analog of the Choi matrix since they can be defined rigorously as, in general, nonclosable forms on an appropriate dense subspace. The properties of these forms are discussed in Sec. 2. An important question is: when the CJ form is given by a bounded operator. This is the case for entanglement…
We show that entangling capacities based on the Jamiolkowski isomorphism may be used to place lower bounds on the communication capacities of arbitrary bipartite unitaries. Therefore, for these definitions, the relations which have been previously shown for two-qubit unitaries also hold for arbitrary dimensions. These results are closely related to the theory of the entanglement-assisted capacity of channels. We also present more general methods for producing ensembles for communication from initial states for entanglement creation.
Separability of quantum states is analyzed with the use of the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism. Spectral separability criteria are derived. The presented approach is illustrated with various examples, among which a separable decomposition of 2 \otimes 2 isotropic states is obtained.
Based on the concept of chi-matrix and Choi-Jamiolkowski states we develop the approach of quantum process reconstruction. Special attention is paid to the adequacy of applied reconstruction models. The approach is applied to the statistical reconstruction of the polarization transformations in anisotropic and dispersive media realized by means of quartz plates and taking into account spectral shape of input states.
We investigate general probabilistic theories in which every mixed state has a purification, unique up to reversible channels on the purifying system. We show that the purification principle is equivalent to the existence of a reversible realization of every physical process, namely that every physical process can be regarded as arising from a reversible interaction of the system with an environment, which is eventually discarded. From the purification principle we also construct an isomorphism between transformations and bipartite states that possesses all structural properties of the Choi-Ja…
In quantum information, most information processing processes involve quantum channels. One manifestation of a quantum channel is quantum operation acting on quantum states. The coherence of quantum operations can be considered as a quantum resource, which can be exploited to perform certain quantum tasks. From the viewpoint of Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism, we study the coherence of quantum operations in the framework of resource theory. We define the phase-out superoperation and give the operation which transforms the Choi-Jamiołkowski state of a quantum operation to the Choi-Jamiołkowski st…
On account of the Abel-Galois no-go theorem for the algebraic solution to quintic and higher order polynomials, the eigenvalue problem and the associated characteristic equation for a general noise dynamics in dimension $d$ via the Choi-Jamiolkowski approach cannot be solved in general via radicals. We provide a way around this impasse by decomposing the Choi matrix into simpler, not necessarily positive, Hermitian operators that are diagonalizable via radicals, which yield a set of `positive' and `negative' Kraus operators. The price to pay is that the sufficient number of Kraus operators is …
The structure theorem is established which shows that an arbitrary multi-mode bosonic Gaussian observable can be represented as a combination of four basic cases, the physical prototypes of which are homodyne and heterodyne, noiseless or noisy, measurements in quantum optics. The proof establishes connection between the description of Gaussian observable in terms of the characteristic function and in terms of density of the probability operator-valued measure (POVM) and has remarkable parallels with treatment of bosonic Gaussian channels in terms of their Choi-Jamiolkowski form. Along the way …

We develop a framework which unifies seemingly different extension (or "joinability") problems for bipartite quantum states and channels. This includes well known extension problems such as optimal quantum cloning and quantum marginal problems as special instances. Central to our generalization is a variant of the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism between bipartite states and dynamical maps which we term the "homocorrelation map": while the former emphasizes the preservation of the positivity constraint, the latter is designed to preserve statistical correlations, allowing direct contact with enta…
We investigate the set a) of positive, trace preserving maps acting on density matrices of size N, and a sequence of its nested subsets: the sets of maps which are b) decomposable, c) completely positive, d) extended by identity impose positive partial transpose and e) are superpositive. Working with the Hilbert-Schmidt (Euclidean) measure we derive tight explicit two-sided bounds for the volumes of all five sets. A sample consequence is the fact that, as N increases, a generic positive map becomes not decomposable and, a fortiori, not completely positive. Due to the Jamiolkowski isomorphism, …
Quantum channels, also called quantum operations, are linear, trace preserving and completely positive transformations in the space of quantum states. Such operations describe discrete time evolution of an open quantum system interacting with an environment. The thesis contains an analysis of properties of quantum channels and different entropies used to quantify the decoherence introduced into the system by a given operation. Part I of the thesis provides a general introduction to the subject. In Part II, the action of a quantum channel is treated as a process of preparation of a quantum ense…
In this paper we introduce a new partial order on quantum states that considers which states can be achieved from others by updating on `agreeing' Bayesian evidence. We prove that this order can also be interpreted in terms of minimising worst case distuinguishability between states using the concept of quantum max-divergence. This order solves the problem of which states are optimal approximations to their more pure counterparts and it shows in an explicit way that a proposed quantum analogue of Bayes' rule leads to a Bayesian update that changes the state as little as possible when updating …
We define the quantum-incoherent relative entropy of coherence ($\mathcal{QI}$ REC) of quantum channels in the framework of the resource theory by using the Choi-Jamiolkowsky isomorphism. Coherence-breaking channels are introduced as free operations and their corresponding Choi states as free states. We also show the relationship between the coherence of channel and the quantum discord and find that basis-dependent quantum asymmetric discord can never be more than the $\mathcal{QI}$ REC for any quantum channels. {Also}, we prove the $\mathcal{QI}$ REC is decreasing for any divisible quantum in…
We define a product between quantum superoperators which is preserved under the Choi-Jamiołkowski-Kraus-Sudarshan channel-state isomorphism. We then identify the product as the convolution on the space of superoperators, with respect to which the channel-state duality is also an algebra isomorphism. We find that any witness operator for detecting nonseparability of quantum operations on separated parties can be written entirely within the space of superoperators with the help of the convolution product.
Quantum entanglement can be studied through the theory of completely positive maps in a number of ways, including by making use of the Choi-Jamilkowski isomorphism, which identifies separable states with entanglement breaking quantum channels, and optimal ensemble length with entanglement breaking rank. The multiplicative domain is an important operator structure in the theory of completely positive maps. We introduce a new technique to determine if a channel is entanglement breaking and to evaluate entanglement breaking rank, based on an analysis of multiplicative domains determined by comple…
