The standard weak-coupling approximations associated to open quantum systems have been extensively used in the description of a two-level quantum system, qubit, subjected to relatively weak dissipation compared with the qubit frequency. However, recent progress in the experimental implementations of controlled quantum systems with increased levels of on-demand engineered dissipation has motivated precision studies in parameter regimes that question the validity of the approximations, especially in the presence of time-dependent drive fields. In this paper, we address the precision of weak-coupling approximations by studying a driven qubit through the numerically exact and non-perturbative method known as the stochastic Liouville-von Neumann equation with dissipation. By considering weak drive fields and a cold Ohmic environment with a high cutoff frequency, we use the Markovian Lindblad master equation as a point of comparison for the SLED method and study the influence of the bath-induced energy shift on the qubit dynamics. We also propose a metric that may be used in experiments to map the regime of validity of the Lindblad equation in predicting the steady state of the driven qubit. In addition, we study signatures of the well-known Mollow triplet and observe its meltdown owing to dissipation in an experimentally feasible parameter regime of circuit electrodynamics. Besides shedding light on the practical limitations of the Lindblad equation, we expect our results to inspire future experimental research on engineered open quantum systems, the accurate modeling of which may benefit from non-perturbative methods.
Quantum information processing is in real systems often limited by dissipation, stemming from remaining uncontrolled interaction with microscopic degrees of freedom. Given recent experimental progress, we consider weak dissipation, resulting in a small error probability per operation. Here, we find a simple formula for the fidelity reduction of any desired quantum operation. Interestingly, this reduction is independent of the specific operation; it depends only on the operation time and the dissipation. Using our formula, we investigate the situation where dissipation in different parts of the…
We generalize a microscopic master equation method to study the dissipation dynamics of Jaynes-Cummings two-level system with a weak external driving. Using perturbative analysis to extend the damping bases theory, we derive the corrected Rabi oscillation and vaccum Rabi splitting analytically. The evolution of the decoherence factor of the weakly driven system reveals that the off-diagonal density matrix elements are oscillating at a frequency dependent on the driving strength and the initial population inversion. For highly-inverted systems at the weak-driving limit, this frequency reduces t…
The energy loss due to a quadratic velocity dependent force on a quantum particle bouncing on a perfectly reflecting surface is obtained for a full cycle of motion. We approach this problem by means of a new effective phenomenological Hamiltonian which corresponds to the actual energy of the system and obtained the correction to the eigenvalues of the energy in first order quantum perturbation theory for the case of weak dissipation.
We apply the quantum jump approach to address the statistics of work in a driven two-level system coupled to a heat bath. We demonstrate how this question can be analyzed by counting photons absorbed and emitted by the environment in repeated experiments. We find that the common non-equilibrium fluctuation relations are satisfied identically. The usual fluctuation-dissipation theorem for linear response applies for weak dissipation and/or weak drive. We point out qualitative differences between the classical and quantum regimes.
We investigate the generalization of the spin-boson model to arbitrary spin size. The Born-Markov approximation is employed to derive a master equation in the regime of small coupling strengths to the environment. For spin one half, the master equation transforms into a set of Bloch equations, the solution of which is in good agreement with results of the spin-boson model for weak ohmic dissipation. For larger spins, we find a superradiance-like behavior known from the Dicke model. The influence of the nonresonant bosons of the dissipative environment can lead to the formation of a beat patter…
The proof of the long-standing conjecture is presented that Markovian quantum master equations are at odds with quantum thermodynamics under conventional assumptions of fluctuation-dissipation theorems (implying a translation invariant dissipation). Specifically, except for identified systems, persistent system-bath correlations of at least one kind, spatial or temporal, are obligatory for thermalization. A systematic procedure is proposed to construct translation invariant bath models producing steady states that well-approximate thermal states. A quantum optical scheme for the laboratory ass…
A scheme for remote weak signal sensor is proposed in which a coupled resonator optical waveguide~(CROW), as a transmitter, couples to a hybrid optomechanical cavity and an observing cavity, respectively. The non-Markovian theory is employed to study the weak force sensor by treating the CROW as a non-Markovian reservoir of the cavity fields, and the negative-effective-mass~(NEM) oscillator is introduced to cancel the back-action noise. Under certain conditions, dissipationless bound states can be formed such that weak signal can be transferred in the CROW without dissipation. Our results show…
Driven quantum systems coupled to an environment typically exhibit effectively thermal behavior with relaxational dynamics near criticality. However, a different qualitative behavior might be expected in the weakly dissipative limit due to the competition between coherent dynamics and weak dissipation. In this work, we investigate a driven-dissipative infinite-range Ising model in the presence of individual atomic dissipation, a model that emerges from the paradigmatic open Dicke model in the large-detuning limit. We show that the system undergoes a dynamical crossover from relaxational dynami…
We present a theoretical analysis of the dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 fermionic gas subject to weak two-body losses. Our approach highlights the crucial role played by spin conservation in the determination of the full time evolution. We focus in particular on the dynamics of a gas that is initially prepared in a Dicke state with fully-symmetric spin wavefunction, in a band insulator, or in a Mott insulator. In the latter case, we investigate the emergence of a steady symmetry-resolved purification of the gas. Our results could help the modelisation and understanding of recent experi…
We investigate the critical behavior of the open coherently-driven Bose-Hubbard dimer under nonlocal dissipation. A conserved quantity arises from the nonlocal nature of the dissipation, rendering the dimer multistable. In the weak-coupling semiclassical limit, the displayed criticality takes the form of amplitude bistability and breaking of spatial and temporal symmetries. A period-bistable time crystal is formed, consisting of Josephson-like oscillations. Mean-field dynamics and quantum trajectories complement the spectral analysis of the Liouvillian in the approach to the semiclassical limi…
Photons in a nonlinear medium can repel or attract each other, resulting in a strongly correlated quantum many-body system. Typically, such strongly correlated states of light arise from the extreme nonlinearity granted by quantum emitters that are strongly coupled to a photonic mode. However, in these approaches, unavoidable dissipation, like photon loss, blurs nonlinear quantum effects. Here, we generate strongly correlated photon states using only weak coupling and taking advantage of dissipation. We launch light through an ensemble of non-interacting waveguide-coupled atoms, which induce c…
We study a model of isothermal steady-state work-to-work converter, where a single quantum two-level system (TLS) driven by time-dependent periodic external fields acts as the working medium and is permanently put in contact with a thermal reservoir at fixed temperature $T$. By combining Short-Iterative Lanczos (SIL) method and analytic approaches, we study the converter performance in the linear response regime and in a wide range of driving frequencies, from weak to strong dissipation. We show that for our ideal quantum machine several parameter ranges exist where a violation of Thermodynami…
The concept of weak invariants has recently been introduced in the context of conserved quantities in finite-time processes in nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics. A weak invariant itself has a time-dependent spectrum, but its expectation value remains constant under time evolution defined by a relevant master equation. Although its expectation value is thus conserved by definition, its fluctuation is not. Here, time evolution of such a fluctuation is studied. It is shown that if the subdynamics is given by a completely positive map, then the fluctuation of the associated weak invariant does…
Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP) is an important technique used for coherent quantum controls. In this paper we investigate how the practically-existing dissipation of the system influences on the efficiency of the passage, and thus the fidelities of the SCRAP-based quantum gates. With flux-biased Josephson qubits as a specifical example, our results show clearly that the efficiency of the logic gates implemented by SCRAP are robust against the weak dissipation. The influence due to the non-adiabtic transitions between the adiabatic passages is comparatively significantly small. T…
Highly state-selective, weakly dissipative population transfer is used to irreversibly move the population of one ground state qubit level of an atomic ion to an effectively stable excited manifold with high fidelity. Subsequent laser interrogation accurately distinguishes these electronic manifolds, and we demonstrate a total qubit state preparation and measurement (SPAM) inaccuracy $ε_\mathrm{SPAM} < 1.7 \times 10^{-4}$ ($-38 \mbox{ dB}$), limited by imperfect population transfer between qubit eigenstates. We show experimentally that full transfer would yield an inaccuracy less than $8.0 \ti…
We discuss the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well trap subject to phase noise and particle loss. The phase coherence of a weakly-interacting condensate as well as the response to an external driving show a pronounced stochastic resonance effect: Both quantities become maximal for a finite value of the dissipation rate matching the intrinsic time scales of the system. Even stronger effects are observed when dissipation acts in concurrence with strong inter-particle interactions, restoring the purity of the condensate almost completely and increasing the phase coherence sign…
The interplay between interaction, disorder, and dissipation has shown a rich phenomenology. Here we investigate a disordered XXZ spin chain in contact with a bath which, alone, would drive the system towards a highly delocalized and coherent Dicke state. We show that there exist regimes for which the natural orbitals of the single-particle density matrix of the steady state are all localized in the presence of strong disorders, either for weak interaction or strong interaction. We show that the averaged steady-state occupation in the eigenbasis of the open system Hamiltonian could follow an e…
