We explain that when quantising phase spaces with varying symplectic structures, the bundle of quantum Hilbert spaces over the parameter space has a natural unitary connection. We then focus on symplectic vector spaces and their fermionic counterparts. After reviewing how the quantum Hilbert space depends on physical parameters such as the Hamiltonian and unphysical parameters such as choices of polarisations, we study the connection, curvature and phases of the Hilbert space bundle when the phase space structure itself varies. We apply the results to the two-sphere family of symplectic structures on a hyper-Kähler vector space and to their fermionic analogue, and conclude with possible generalisations.
In a previous work [J. Math. Phys. 52, 123504 (2011)], refined algebraic quantisation (RAQ) within a family of classically equivalent constrained Hamiltonian systems that are related to each other by rescaling one momentum-type constraint was investigated. In the present work, the first steps to generalise this analysis to cases where more constraints occur are developed. The system under consideration contains two momentum-type constraints, originally abelian, where rescalings of these constraints by a non-vanishing function of the coordinates are allowed. These rescalings induce structure fu…
The purpose of this paper is twofold: On the one hand, after a thorough review of the matter free case, we supplement the derivations in our companion paper on 'loop quantum gravity without the Hamiltonian constraint' with calculational details and extend the results to standard model matter, a cosmological constant, and non-compact spatial slices. On the other hand, we provide a discussion on the role of observables, focussed on the situation of a symmetry exchange, which is key to our derivation. Furthermore, we comment on the relation of our model to reduced phase space quantisations based …
It has been established that endowing classical phase space with a Riemannian metric is sufficient for describing quantum mechanics. In this letter we argue that, while sufficient, the above condition is certainly not necessary in passing from classical to quantum mechanics. Instead, our approach to quantum mechanics is modelled on a statement that closely resembles Darboux's theorem for symplectic manifolds.
We present the world-line quantisation of a system invariant under the symmetries of reciprocal relativity (pseudo-unitary transformations on ``phase space coordinates" $(x^μ(τ),p^μ(τ))$ which preserve the Minkowski metric and the symplectic form, and global shifts in these coordinates, together with coordinate dependent transformations of an additional compact phase coordinate, $θ(τ)$). The action is that of free motion over the corresponding Weyl-Heisenberg group. Imposition of the first class constraint, the generator of local time reparametrisations, on physical states enforces identificat…
We study how the spin-statistics theorem relates to the geometric structures on phase space that are introduced in quantisation procedures (namely a U(1) bundle and connection). The relation can be proved in both the relativistic and the non-relativistic domain (in fact for any symmetry group including internal symmetries) without quantum field theory, by the requirement that the exchange can be implemented smoothly by a class of symmetry transformations that project in the phase space of the joint system. We discuss the interpretation of this requirement, stressing the fact that any distincti…
We investigate refined algebraic quantisation with group averaging in a constrained Hamiltonian system whose gauge group is the connected component of the lower triangular subgroup of SL(2,R). The unreduced phase space is T^*R^{p+q} with p>0 and q>0, and the system has a distinguished classical o(p,q) observable algebra. Group averaging with the geometric average of the right and left invariant measures, invariant under the group inverse, yields a Hilbert space that carries a maximally degenerate principal unitary series representation of O(p,q). The representation is nontrivial iff (p,q) is n…
In this article we consider quantum phase space reduction when zero is a regular value of the momentum map. By analogy with the classical case we define the BRST cohomology in the framework of deformation quantization. We compute the quantum BRST cohomology in terms of a `quantum' Chevalley-Eilenberg cohomology of the Lie algebra on the constraint surface. To prove this result, we construct an explicit chain homotopy, both in the classical and quantum case, which is constructed out of a prolongation of functions on the constraint surface. We have observed the phenomenon that the quantum BRST c…
We quantise a Poisson structure on H^{n+2g}, where H is a semidirect product group of the form $G\ltimes\mathfrak{g}^*$. This Poisson structure arises in the combinatorial description of the phase space of Chern-Simons theory with gauge group $G\ltimes\mathfrak{g}^*$ on $R \times S_{g,n}$, where S_{g,n} is a surface of genus g with n punctures. The quantisation of this Poisson structure is a key step in the quantisation of Chern-Simons theory with gauge group $G\ltimes\mathfrak{g}^*$. We construct the quantum algebra and its irreducible representations and show that the quantum double D(G) of …
In the Chern-Simons formulation of Einstein gravity in 2+1 dimensions the phase space of gravity is the moduli space of flat G-connections, where G is a typically non-compact Lie group which depends on the signature of space-time and the cosmological constant. For Euclidean signature and vanishing cosmological constant, G is the three-dimensional Euclidean group. For this case the Poisson structure of the moduli space is given explicitly in terms of a classical r-matrix. It is shown that the quantum R-matrix of the quantum double D(SU(2)) provides a quantisation of that Poisson structure.
Using the algebro-geometric approach, we study the structure of semi-classical eigenstates in a weakly-anisotropic quantum Heisenberg spin chain. We outline how classical nonlinear spin waves governed by the anisotropic Landau-Lifshitz equation arise as coherent macroscopic low-energy fluctuations of the ferromagnetic ground state. Special emphasis is devoted to the simplest types of solutions, describing precessional motion and elliptic magnetisation waves. The internal magnon structure of classical spin waves is resolved by performing the semi-classical quantisation using the Riemann-Hilbert…
It is shown that the canonical classical $r$-matrix arising from the Drinfel'd double structure underlying the two-fold centrally extended (2+1) Galilean and Newton-Hooke Lie algebras (with either zero or non-zero cosmological constant $Λ$, respectively) originates as a well-defined non-relativistic contraction of a specific class of canonical $r$-matrices associated with the Drinfel'd double structure of the (2+1) (anti)-de Sitter Lie algebra. The full quantum group structure associated with such (2+1) Galilean and Newton-Hooke Drinfel'd doubles is presented, and the corresponding noncommutat…
We develop a semiclassical approximation for the dynamics of quantum systems in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces whose classical counterparts are defined on a toroidal phase space. In contrast to previous models of quantum maps, the time evolution is in continuous time and, hence, is generated by a Schrödinger equation. In the framework of Weyl quantisation, we construct discrete, semiclassical Fourier integral operators approximating the unitary time evolution and use these to prove a Gutzwiller trace formula. We briefly discuss a semiclassical quantisation condition for eigenvalues as well …
In this article, the third of three, we analyse how the Weyl quantisation for compact Lie groups presented in the second article of this series fits with the projective-phase space structure of loop quantum gravity-type models. Thus, the proposed Weyl quantisation may serve as the main mathematical tool to implement the program of space adiabatic perturbation theory in such models. As we already argued in our first article, space adiabatic perturbation theory offers an ideal framework to overcome the obstacles that hinder the direct implementation of the conventional Born-Oppenheimer approach …
If one replaces the constraints of the Ashtekar-Barbero $SU(2)$ gauge theory formulation of Euclidean gravity by their $U(1)^3$ version, one arrives at a consistent model which captures significant structure of its $SU(2)$ version. In particular, it displays a non trivial realisation of the hypersurface deformation algebra which makes it an interesting testing ground for (Euclidean) quantum gravity as has been emphasised in a recent series of papers due to Varadarajan et al. In this paper we consider a reduced phase space approach to this model. This is especially attractive because, after a c…
Canonical quantisation of constrained systems with first class constraints via Dirac's operator constraint method proceeds by the thory of Rigged Hilbert spaces, sometimes also called Refined Algebraic Quantisation (RAQ). This method can work when the constraints form a Lie algebra. When the constraints only close with nontrivial structure functions, the Rigging map can no longer be defined. To overcome this obstacle, the Master Constraint Method has been proposed which replaces the individual constraints by a weighted sum of absolute squares of the constraints. Now the direct integral decompo…
We investigate refined algebraic quantisation of the constrained Hamiltonian system introduced by Boulware as a simplified version of the Ashtekar-Horowitz model. The dimension of the physical Hilbert space is finite and asymptotes in the semiclassical limit to 1/(2π\hbar) times the volume of the reduced phase space. The representation of the physical observable algebra is irreducible for generic potentials but decomposes into irreducible subrepresentations for certain special potentials. The superselection sectors are related to singularities in the reduced phase space and to the rate of dive…
We study the quantisation of complex, finite-dimensional, compact, classical phase spaces C, by explicitly constructing Hilbert-space vector bundles over C. We find that these vector bundles split as the direct sum of two holomorphic vector bundles: the holomorphic tangent bundle T(C), plus a complex line bundle N(C). Quantum states (except the vacuum) appear as tangent vectors to C. The vacuum state appears as the fibrewise generator of N(C). Holomorphic line bundles N(C) are classified by the elements of Pic(C), the Picard group of C. In this way Pic(C) appears as the parameter space for non…
In this work we examine noncommutativity of position coordinates in classical symplectic mechanics and its quantisation. In coordinates $\{q^i,p_k\}$ the canonical symplectic two-form is $ω_0=dq^i\wedge dp_i$. It is well known in symplectic mechanics {\bf\cite{Souriau,Abraham,Guillemin}} that the interaction of a charged particle with a magnetic field can be described in a Hamiltonian formalism without a choice of a potential. This is done by means of a modified symplectic two-form $ω=ω_0-e\F$, where $e$ is the charge and the (time-independent) magnetic field $\F$ is closed: $\dif\F=0$. With t…
We complete the recent derivation of a Ruijsenaars type system that arises as a reduction of the natural free system on the Heisenberg double of SU(n,n). The previous analysis by Marshall focused on a dense open submanifold of the reduced phase space, and here we describe the full phase space wherein Liouville integrability of the system holds by construction.
We describe the quantization of a four-dimensional locally non-geometric M-theory background dual to a twisted three-torus by deriving a phase space star product for deformation quantization of quasi-Poisson brackets related to the nonassociative algebra of octonions. The construction is based on a choice of $G_2$-structure which defines a nonassociative deformation of the addition law on the seven-dimensional vector space of Fourier momenta. We demonstrate explicitly that this star product reduces to that of the three-dimensional parabolic constant $R$-flux model in the contraction of M-theor…
