Spectral methods, thanks to the high accuracy and the possibility to use fast algorithms, represent an effective way to approximate the Boltzmann collision operator. On the other hand, the loss of some local invariants leads to the wrong long time behavior. A way to overcome this drawback, without sacrificing spectral accuracy, has been proposed recently with the construction of equilibrium preserving spectral methods. Despite the ability to capture the steady state with arbitrary accuracy, the theoretical properties of the method have never been studied in details. In this paper, using the perturbation argument developed by Filbet and Mouhot for the homogeneous Boltzmann equation, we prove stability, convergence and spectrally accurate long time behavior of the equilibrium preserving approach.
In this paper we propose a novel numerical approach for the Boltzmann equation with uncertainties. The method combines the efficiency of classical direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) schemes in the phase space together with the accuracy of stochastic Galerkin (sG) methods in the random space. This hybrid formulation makes it possible to construct methods that preserve the main physical properties of the solution along with spectral accuracy in the random space. The schemes are developed and analyzed in the case of space homogeneous problems as these contain the main numerical difficulties. Se…
As one of the main governing equations in kinetic theory, the Boltzmann equation is widely utilized in aerospace, microscopic flow, etc. Its high-resolution simulation is crucial in these related areas. However, due to the high dimensionality of the Boltzmann equation, high-resolution simulations are often difficult to achieve numerically. The moment method which was first proposed by Grad is among the popular numerical methods to achieve efficient high-resolution simulations. We can derive the governing equations in the moment method by taking moments on both sides of the Boltzmann equation, …
Spectral methods, thanks to the high accuracy and the possibility of using fast algorithms, represent an effective way to approximate collisional kinetic equations in kinetic theory. On the other hand, the loss of some local invariants can lead to the wrong long time behavior of the numerical solution. We introduce in this paper a novel Fourier-Galerkin spectral method that improves the classical spectral method by making it conservative on the moments of the approximated distribution, without sacrificing its spectral accuracy or the possibility of using fast algorithms. The method is derived …
We introduce a fast Fourier spectral method for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with non-cutoff collision kernels. Such kernels contain non-integrable singularity in the deviation angle which arise in a wide range of interaction potentials (e.g., the inverse power law potentials). Albeit more physical, the non-cutoff kernels bring a lot of difficulties in both analysis and numerics, hence are often cut off in most studies (the well-known Grad's angular cutoff assumption). We demonstrate that the general framework of the fast Fourier spectral method can be extended to handle the no…
We apply the spectral-Lagrangian method of Gamba and Tharkabhushanam for solving the homogeneous Boltzmann equation to compute the low probability tails of the velocity distribution function, $f$, of a particle species. This method is based on a truncation, $Q^{\operatorname{tr}}(f,f)$, of the Boltzmann collision operator, $Q(f,f)$, whose Fourier transform is given by a weighted convolution. The truncated collision operator models the situation in which two colliding particles ignore each other if their relative speed exceeds a threshold, $g_{\text{tr}}$. We demonstrate that the choice of trun…
We propose a control variate multilevel Monte Carlo method for the kinetic BGK model of the Boltzmann equation subject to random inputs. The method combines a multilevel Monte Carlo technique with the computation of the optimal control variate multipliers derived from local or global variance minimization problems. Consistency and convergence analysis for the method equipped with a second-order positivity-preserving and asymptotic-preserving scheme in space and time is also performed. Various numerical examples confirm that the optimized multilevel Monte Carlo method outperforms the classical …

Numerical approximation of the Boltzmann equation is a challenging problem due to its high-dimensional, nonlocal, and nonlinear collision integral. Over the past decade, the Fourier-Galerkin spectral method has become a popular deterministic method for solving the Boltzmann equation, manifested by its high accuracy and potential of being further accelerated by the fast Fourier transform. Albeit its practical success, the stability of the method is only recently proved by Filbet, F. & Mouhot, C. in [$ Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.$ 363, no. 4 (2011): 1947-1980.] by utilizing the "spreading" property …
Based on the Hermite expansion of the distribution function, we introduce a Galerkin spectral method for the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with the realistic inverse-power-law models. A practical algorithm is proposed to evaluate the coefficients in the spectral method with high accuracy, and these coefficients are also used to construct new computationally affordable collision models. Numerical experiments show that our method captures the low-order moments very efficiently.
We develop a novel Monte Carlo strategy for the simulation of the Boltzmann-BGK model with both low-collisional and high-collisional regimes present. The presented solution to maintain accuracy in low-collisional regimes and remove exploding simulation costs in high-collisional regimes uses hybridized particles that exhibit both kinetic behaviour and diffusive behaviour depending on the local collisionality. In this work, we develop such a method that maintains the correct mean, variance, and correlation of the positional increments over multiple time steps of fixed step size for all values of…

Direct simulation of physical processes on a kinetic level is prohibitively expensive in aerospace applications due to the extremely high dimension of the solution spaces. In this paper, we consider the moment system of the Boltzmann equation, which projects the kinetic physics onto the hydrodynamic scale. The unclosed moment system can be solved in conjunction with the entropy closure strategy. Using an entropy closure provides structural benefits to the physical system of partial differential equations. Usually computing such closure of the system spends the majority of the total computation…

This work presents neural network based minimal entropy closures for the moment system of the Boltzmann equation, that preserve the inherent structure of the system of partial differential equations, such as entropy dissipation and hyperbolicity. The described method embeds convexity of the moment to entropy map in the neural network approximation to preserve the structure of the minimal entropy closure. Two techniques are used to implement the methods. The first approach approximates the map between moments and the minimal entropy of the moment system and is convex by design. The second appro…
