Neural Architecture Search (NAS), the process of automating architecture engineering, is an appealing next step to advancing end-to-end Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), replacing expert-designed networks with learned, task-specific architectures. In contrast to early computational-demanding NAS methods, recent gradient-based NAS methods, e.g., DARTS (Differentiable ARchiTecture Search), SNAS (Stochastic NAS) and ProxylessNAS, significantly improve the NAS efficiency. In this paper, we make two contributions. First, we rigorously develop an efficient NAS method via Straight-Through (ST) gradients, called ST-NAS. Basically, ST-NAS uses the loss from SNAS but uses ST to back-propagate gradients through discrete variables to optimize the loss, which is not revealed in ProxylessNAS. Using ST gradients to support sub-graph sampling is a core element to achieve efficient NAS beyond DARTS and SNAS. Second, we successfully apply ST-NAS to end-to-end ASR. Experiments over the widely benchmarked 80-hour WSJ and 300-hour Switchboard datasets show that the ST-NAS induced architectures significantly outperform the human-designed architecture across the two datasets. Strengths of ST-NAS such as architecture transferability and low computation cost in memory and time are also reported.

Advances in deep learning have led to state-of-the-art performance across a multitude of speech recognition tasks. Nevertheless, the widespread deployment of deep neural networks for on-device speech recognition remains a challenge, particularly in edge scenarios where the memory and computing resources are highly constrained (e.g., low-power embedded devices) or where the memory and computing budget dedicated to speech recognition is low (e.g., mobile devices performing numerous tasks besides speech recognition). In this study, we introduce the concept of attention condensers for building low…
Automatic speaker recognition algorithms typically characterize speech audio using short-term spectral features that encode the physiological and anatomical aspects of speech production. Such algorithms do not fully capitalize on speaker-dependent characteristics present in behavioral speech features. In this work, we propose a prosody encoding network called DeepTalk for extracting vocal style features directly from raw audio data. The DeepTalk method outperforms several state-of-the-art speaker recognition systems across multiple challenging datasets. The speaker recognition performance is f…
Automatic speech recognition is a difficult problem in pattern recognition because several sources of variability exist in the speech input like the channel variations, the input might be clean or noisy, the speakers may have different accent and variations in the gender, etc. As a result, domain adaptation is important in speech recognition where we train the model for a particular source domain and test it on a different target domain. In this paper, we propose a technique to perform unsupervised gender-based domain adaptation in speech recognition using phonetic features. The experiments ar…

Modern end-to-end speech recognition models show astonishing results in transcribing audio signals into written text. However, conventional data feeding pipelines may be sub-optimal for low-resource speech recognition, which still remains a challenging task. We propose an automated curriculum learning approach to optimize the sequence of training examples based on both the progress of the model while training and prior knowledge about the difficulty of the training examples. We introduce a new difficulty measure called compression ratio that can be used as a scoring function for raw audio in v…
Building an accurate automatic speech recognition (ASR) system requires a large dataset that contains many hours of labeled speech samples produced by a diverse set of speakers. The lack of such open free datasets is one of the main issues preventing advancements in ASR research. To address this problem, we propose to augment a natural speech dataset with synthetic speech. We train very large end-to-end neural speech recognition models using the LibriSpeech dataset augmented with synthetic speech. These new models achieve state of the art Word Error Rate (WER) for character-level based models …

Speech emotion recognition (SER) has many challenges, but one of the main challenges is that each framework does not have a unified standard. In this paper, we propose SpeechEQ, a framework for unifying SER tasks based on a multi-scale unified metric. This metric can be trained by Multitask Learning (MTL), which includes two emotion recognition tasks of Emotion States Category (EIS) and Emotion Intensity Scale (EIS), and two auxiliary tasks of phoneme recognition and gender recognition. For this framework, we build a Mandarin SER dataset - SpeechEQ Dataset (SEQD). We conducted experiments on t…

Speech enhancement (SE) aims to suppress the additive noise from a noisy speech signal to improve the speech's perceptual quality and intelligibility. However, the over-suppression phenomenon in the enhanced speech might degrade the performance of downstream automatic speech recognition (ASR) task due to the missing latent information. To alleviate such problem, we propose an interactive feature fusion network (IFF-Net) for noise-robust speech recognition to learn complementary information from the enhanced feature and original noisy feature. Experimental results show that the proposed method …

Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using EEG signals for performing continuous silent speech recognition. We demonstrate our results for a limited English vocabulary consisting of 30 unique sentences.
In recent years, Text-To-Speech (TTS) has been used as a data augmentation technique for speech recognition to help complement inadequacies in the training data. Correspondingly, we investigate the use of a multi-speaker TTS system to synthesize speech in support of speaker recognition. In this study we focus the analysis on tasks where a relatively small number of speakers is available for training. We observe on our datasets that TTS synthesized speech improves cross-domain speaker recognition performance and can be combined effectively with multi-style training. Additionally, we explore the…

We propose a way to use a transformer-based language model in conversational speech recognition. Specifically, we focus on decoding efficiently in a weighted finite-state transducer framework. We showcase an approach to lattice re-scoring that allows for longer range history captured by a transfomer-based language model and takes advantage of a transformer's ability to avoid computing sequentially.
The electroencephalography (EEG) signals recorded in parallel with speech are used to perform isolated and continuous speech recognition. In this paper we investigate whether it is possible to separate out this speech perception component from EEG signals in order to design more robust EEG based speech recognition systems. We further demonstrate predicting EEG signals recorded in parallel with speaking from EEG signals recorded in parallel with passive listeni…

In the recent trend of semi-supervised speech recognition, both self-supervised representation learning and pseudo-labeling have shown promising results. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to combine their ideas for end-to-end speech recognition model. Without any extra loss function, we utilize the Gradient Mask to optimize the model when training on pseudo-label. This method forces the speech recognition model to predict from the masked input to learn strong acoustic representation and make training robust to label noise. In our semi-supervised experiments, the method can improve the…
Speech enhancement techniques based on deep learning have brought significant improvement on speech quality and intelligibility. Nevertheless, a large gain in speech quality measured by objective metrics, such as perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ), does not necessarily lead to improved speech recognition performance due to speech distortion in the enhancement stage. In this paper, a multi-channel dilated convolutional network based frequency domain modeling is presented to enhance target speaker in the far-field, noisy and multi-talker conditions. We study three approaches towards …

Active learning is the solution by selecting the most valuable samples for annotation. In this paper, we proposed to use a predicted loss that estimates the uncertainty of the sample. The CTC (Connectionist Temporal Classification) and attention loss are informative for speech recognition since they are computed based on all decoding paths and alignments. The speech chain mechanism integrates automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) modules into a single cycle during training. In our previous work, we applied a speech chain mechanism as a semi-supervised learning. It provides the ability for ASR and TTS to assist each other when they receive unpaired data and let them infer the missing pair and optimize the model with reconstruction loss. If we only have speech without transcription, ASR generates the most likely transcription from the speech data, and then TTS uses the generated transcription to reconstruct the ori…

Code-switching (CS) is common in daily conversations where more than one language is used within a sentence. The difficulties of CS speech recognition lie in alternating languages and the lack of transcribed data. Therefore, this paper uses the recently successful self-supervised learning (SSL) methods to leverage many unlabeled speech data without CS. We show that hidden representations of SSL models offer frame-level language identity even if the models are trained with English speech only. Jointly training CTC and language identification modules with self-supervised speech representations i…

This paper presents our latest investigation on end-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) for overlapped speech. We propose to train an end-to-end system conditioned on speaker embeddings and further improved by transfer learning from clean speech. This proposed framework does not require any parallel non-overlapped speech materials and is independent of the number of speakers. Our experimental results on overlapped speech datasets show that joint conditioning on speaker embeddings and transfer learning significantly improves the ASR performance.
A key desiderata for inclusive and accessible speech recognition technology is ensuring its robust performance to children's speech. Notably, this includes the rapidly advancing neural network based end-to-end speech recognition systems. Children speech recognition is more challenging due to the larger intra-inter speaker variability in terms of acoustic and linguistic characteristics compared to adult speech. Furthermore, the lack of adequate and appropriate children speech resources adds to the challenge of designing robust end-to-end neural architectures. This study provides a critical asse…

The decade from 2010 to 2020 saw remarkable improvements in automatic speech recognition. Many people now use speech recognition on a daily basis, for example to perform voice search queries, send text messages, and interact with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Siri by Apple. Before 2010 most people rarely used speech recognition. Given the remarkable changes in the state of speech recognition over the previous decade, what can we expect over the coming decade? I attempt to forecast the state of speech recognition research and applications by the year 2030. While the changes to general …
Speech recognizers trained on close-talking speech do not generalize to distant speech and the word error rate degradation can be as large as 40% absolute. In this work, we review several approaches from a domain adaptation perspective. These approaches, including speech enhancement, multi-condition training, data augmentation, and autoencoders, all involve a transformation of the data between domains. We conduct experiments on t…

Recently, the end-to-end training approach for neural beamformer-supported multi-channel ASR has shown its effectiveness in multi-channel speech recognition. This paper explores the usage of single-channel data to improve the multi-channel end-to-end speech recognition system. Specifically, we design three schemes to exploit the single-channel data, namely pre-…
