We employ a set of Magneticum cosmological hydrodynamic simulations that span over $15$ different cosmologies, and extract masses and concentrations of all well-resolved haloes between $z=0-1$ for critical over-densities $Δ_\texttt{vir}, Δ_{200c}, Δ_{500c}, Δ_{2500c}$ and mean overdensity $Δ_{200m}.$ We provide the first mass-concentration (Mc) relation and sparsity relation (i.e. $M_{\Delta1} - M_{\Delta2}$ mass conversion) of hydrodynamic simulations that is modelled by mass, redshift and cosmological parameters $Ω_m, Ω_b, σ_8, h_0$ as a tool for observational studies. We also quantify the impact that the Mc relation scatter and the assumption of NFW density profiles have on the uncertainty of the sparsity relation. We find that converting masses with the aid of a Mc relation carries an additional fractional scatter ($\approx 4\%$) originated from deviations from the assumed NFW density profile. For this reason we provide a direct mass-mass conversion relation fit that depends on redshift and cosmological parameters. We release the package hydro\_mc, a python tool that perform all kind of conversions presented in this paper.
We study the dependency of the concentration on mass and redshift using three large N-body cosmological hydrodynamic simulations carried out by the Magneticum project. We constrain the slope of the mass-concentration relation with an unprecedented mass range for hydrodynamic simulations and find a negative trend on the mass-concentration plane and a slightly negative redshift dependency, in agreement with observations and other numerical works. We also show how the concentration correlates with the fossil parameter, defined as the stellar mass ratio between the central galaxy and the most mass…
We study the potential of the kinematic SZ effect as a probe for cosmology, focusing on the pairwise method. The main challenge is disentangling the cosmologically interesting mean pairwise velocity from the cluster optical depth and the associated uncertainties on the baryonic physics in clusters. Furthermore, the pairwise kSZ signal might be affected by internal cluster motions or correlations between velocity and optical depth. We investigate these effects using the Magneticum cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, one of the largest simulations of this kind performed to date. We produce …
We introduce CRK-HACC, an extension of the Hardware/Hybrid Accelerated Cosmology Code (HACC), to resolve gas hydrodynamics in large-scale structure formation simulations of the universe. The new framework couples the HACC gravitational N-body solver with a modern smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) approach called CRKSPH. $\underline{\text{C}}$onservative $\underline{\text{R}}$eproducing $\underline{\text{K}}$ernel $\underline{\text{SPH}}$ utilizes smoothing functions that exactly interpolate linear fields while manifestly preserving conservation laws (momentum, mass, and energy). The CRKSPH…
The effect of baryons on the matter power spectrum is likely to have an observable effect for future galaxy surveys, like Euclid or LSST. As a first step towards a fully predictive theory, we investigate the effect of non-radiative hydrodynamics on the structure of galaxy groups sized halos, which contribute the most to the weak lensing power spectrum. We perform high resolution (more than one million particles per halo and one kilo-parsec resolution) non-radiative hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations of a sample of 16 halos, comparing the profiles to popular analytical models. We find that the …
The evolution of the large-scale distribution of matter is sensitive to a variety of fundamental parameters that characterise the dark matter, dark energy, and other aspects of our cosmological framework. Since the majority of the mass density is in the form of dark matter that cannot be directly observed, to do cosmology with large-scale structure one must use observable (baryonic) quantities that trace the underlying matter distribution in a (hopefully) predictable way. However, recent numerical studies have demonstrated that the mapping between observable and total mass, as well as the tota…

We present a detailed comparison between the well-known SPH code GADGET and the new moving-mesh code AREPO on a number of hydrodynamical test problems. Through a variety of numerical experiments we establish a clear link between test problems and systematic numerical effects seen in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation. Our tests demonstrate deficiencies of the SPH method in several sectors. These accuracy problems not only manifest themselves in idealized hydrodynamical tests, but also propagate to more realistic simulation setups of galaxy formation, ultimately affecting gas properti…
We revisit the analysis made by Hwang and Noh [JCAP 1310 (2013)] aiming the construction of a Newtonian set of equations incorporating pressure effects typical of the General Relativity theory. We explicitly derive the Hwang-Noh equations, comparing them with similar computations found in the literature. Then, we investigate $i)$ the cosmological expansion, $ii)$ linear cosmological perturbations theory and $iii)$ stellar equilibrium by using the new set of equations and comparing the results with those coming from the usual Newtonian theory, from the Neo-Newtonian theory and from the General …

We present the results of a series of adiabatic hydrodynamical simulations of several quintessence models (both with a free and an interacting scalar field) in comparison to a standard \LCDM\ cosmology. For each we use $2\times1024^3$ particles in a $250$\hMpc\ periodic box assuming WMAP7 cosmology. In this work we focus on the properties of haloes in the cosmic web at $z=0$. The web is classified into \emph{voids}, \emph{sheets}, \emph{filaments} and \emph{knots} depending on the eigenvalues of the velocity shear tensor, which are an excellent proxy for the underlying overdensity distribution…
We present the first hydrodynamical simulations of structure formation using the new moving mesh code AREPO and compare the results with GADGET simulations based on a traditional smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique. The two codes share the same Tree-PM gravity solver and include identical sub-resolution physics, but employ different methods to solve the equations of hydrodynamics. This allows us to assess the impact of hydro-solver uncertainties on the results of cosmological studies of galaxy formation. We focus on predictions for global baryon statistics, such as the cosmic star …
We discuss cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation performed with the new moving-mesh code AREPO, which promises higher accuracy compared with the traditional SPH technique that has been widely employed for this problem. We use an identical set of physics in corresponding simulations carried out with the well-tested SPH code GADGET, adopting also the same high-resolution gravity solver. We are thus able to compare both simulation sets on an object-by-object basis, allowing us to cleanly isolate the impact of different hydrodynamical methods on galaxy and halo properties. In a…
Uncertain feedback processes in galaxies affect the distribution of matter, currently limiting the power of weak lensing surveys. If we can identify cosmological statistics that are robust against these uncertainties, or constrain these effects by other means, then we can enhance the power of current and upcoming observations from weak lensing surveys such as DES, Euclid, the Rubin Observatory, and the Roman Space Telescope. In this work, we investigate the potential of the electron density auto-power spectrum as a robust probe of cosmology and baryonic feedback. We use a suite of (magneto-)hy…
The mass assembly of a whole population of sub-Milky Way galaxies is studied by means of hydrodynamical simulations within the $Λ$-CDM cosmology. Our results show that while dark halos assemble hierarchically, in stellar mass this trend is inverted in the sense that the smaller the galaxy, the later is its stellar mass assembly on average. Our star formation and supernovae feedback implementation in a multi-phase interstellar medium seems to play a key role on this process. However, the obtained downsizing trend is not yet as strong as observations show.
We present the Cosmology and Astrophysics with MachinE Learning Simulations --CAMELS-- project. CAMELS is a suite of 4,233 cosmological simulations of $(25~h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})^3$ volume each: 2,184 state-of-the-art (magneto-)hydrodynamic simulations run with the AREPO and GIZMO codes, employing the same baryonic subgrid physics as the IllustrisTNG and SIMBA simulations, and 2,049 N-body simulations. The goal of the CAMELS project is to provide theory predictions for different observables as a function of cosmology and astrophysics, and it is the largest suite of cosmological (magneto-)hydrodynami…

The number density of field galaxies per rotation velocity, referred to as the velocity function, is an intriguing statistical measure probing the smallest scales of structure formation. In this paper we point out that the velocity function is sensitive to small shifts in key cosmological parameters such as the amplitude of primordial perturbations ($σ_8$) or the total matter density ($Ω_{\rm m}$). Using current data and applying conservative assumptions about baryonic effects, we show that the observed velocity function of the Local Volume favours cosmologies in tension with the measurements …
We study the population of galaxies around galaxy clusters in the hydrodynamic simulation suite IllustrisTNG 300-1 to study the signatures of their evolutionary history on observable properties. We measure the radial number density profile, phase space distribution, and splashback radius for galaxies of different masses and colors over the redshift range $z=0-1$. The three primary physical effects which shape the galaxy distribution within clusters are the galaxy quenching, angular momentum distribution and dynamical friction. We find three distinct populations of galaxies by applying a Gaussi…

The recently developed code for N-body/hydrodynamics simulations in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), known as RAyMOND, is used to investigate the consequences of MOND on structure formation in a cosmological context, with a particular focus on the velocity field. This preliminary study investigates the results obtained with the two formulations of MOND implemented in RAyMOND, as well as considering the effects of changing the choice of MOND interpolation function, and the cosmological evolution of the MOND acceleration scale. The simulations are contrived such that structure forms in a back…

We study the properties of two bars formed in fully cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the formation of Milky Way-mass galaxies. In one case, the bar formed in a system with disc, bulge and halo components and is relatively strong and long, as could be expected for a system where the spheroid strongly influences the evolution. The second bar is less strong, shorter, and formed in a galaxy with no significant bulge component. We study the strength and length of the bars, the stellar density profiles along and across the bars and the velocity fields in the bar region. We compare them wit…
It is well established from cosmological simulations that dark matter haloes are not precisely self-similar and an additional parameter, beyond their concentration, is required to accurately describe their spherically-averaged mass density profiles. We present, for the first time, a model to consistently predict both halo concentration, $c$, and this additional `shape' parameter, $α$, for a halo of given mass and redshift for a specified cosmology. Following recent studies, we recast the dependency on mass, redshift, and cosmology to a dependence on `peak height'. We show that, when adopting t…
Any viable cosmological framework has to match the observed proportion of early- and late-type galaxies. In this contribution, we focus on the distribution of galaxy morphological types in the standard model of cosmology (Lambda cold dark matter, $Λ$CDM). Using the latest state-of-the-art cosmological $Λ$CDM simulations known as Illustris, IllustrisTNG, and EAGLE, we calculate the intrinsic and sky-projected aspect ratio distribution of the stars in subhalos with stellar mass $M_* > 10^{10}\,M_\odot$ at redshift $z=0$. There is a significant deficit of intrinsically thin disk galaxies, which h…
Detecting the change of a cosmological object's redshift due to the time evolution of the Universal expansion rate is an ambitious experiment that will be attempted with future telescope facilities. In this paper, we describe the ACCELERATION programme, which aims to study the properties of the most underdense regions of the Universe. One of the highlight goals of this programme is to prepare for the redshift drift measurement. Using the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, we estimate the peculiar acceleration of gas in galaxies and in the Lya forest. We find that star-forming 'cold n…
The two dimensional structure of hot gas in galaxy clusters contains information about the hydrodynamical state of the cluster, which can be used to understand the origin of scatter in the thermodynamical properties of the gas, and to improve the use of clusters to probe cosmology. Using a set of hydrodynamical simulations, we provide a comparison between various maps currently employed in the X-ray analysis of merging clusters and those cluster maps anticipated from forthcoming observations of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. We show the following: 1) an X-ray pseudo-pressure, defined a…
Comparisons between observed and predicted strong lensing properties of galaxy clusters have been routinely used to claim either tension or consistency with $Λ$CDM cosmology. However, standard approaches to such cosmological tests are unable to quantify the preference for one cosmology over another. We advocate approximating the relevant Bayes factor using a marginal likelihood that is based on the following summary statistic: the posterior probability distribution function for the parameters of the scaling relation between Einstein radii and cluster mass, $α$ and $β$. We demonstrate, for the …
We present a new implementation of radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) in the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) code RAMSES. The multi-group radiative transfer (RT) is performed on the AMR grid with a first-order Godunov method using the M1 closure for the Eddington tensor, and is coupled to the hydrodynamics via non-equilibrium thermochemistry of hydrogen and helium. This moment-based approach has the large advantage that the computational cost is independent of the number of radiative sources - it can even deal with continuous regions of emission such as bound-free emission from gas. As it is built d…
The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect has long been identified as one of the most important secondary effects of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). On the one hand, it is a potentially very powerful cosmological probe providing us with additional constraints and on the other hand it represents the major source of secondary fluctuations at small angular scales (l > 1000). We investigate the effects of the SZ modelling in the determination of the cosmological parameters. We explore the consequences of the SZ power spectrum computation by comparing three increasingly complex modelling, from a fi…
We investigate the nature of gas accretion onto haloes and galaxies at z=2 using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations run with the moving mesh code AREPO. Implementing a Monte Carlo tracer particle scheme to determine the origin and thermodynamic history of accreting gas, we make quantitative comparisons to an otherwise identical simulation run with the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code GADGET-3. Contrasting these two numerical approaches, we find significant physical differences in the thermodynamic history of accreted gas in haloes above 10^10.5 solar masses. In agreement with prev…

The evolution of galaxy cluster counts is a powerful probe of several fundamental cosmological parameters. A number of recent studies using this probe have claimed tension with the cosmology preferred by the analysis of the Planck primary CMB data, in the sense that there are fewer clusters observed than predicted based on the primary CMB cosmology. One possible resolution to this problem is systematic errors in the absolute halo mass calibration in cluster studies, which is required to convert the standard theoretical prediction (the halo mass function) into counts as a function of the observ…
Building upon results of cosmological simulations of ultra-light scalar field dark matter (SFDM), we present a comprehensive model for the density profiles of SFDM haloes as a function of halo virial mass $M_{\rm h}$ and scalar field mass $m$. The central regions of SFDM haloes are dominated by solitons with characteristic densities that increase with increasing halo mass and asymptote to CDM-like profiles at large radii. For scalar field masses $m \sim 10^{-22}$ eV, consistent with large-scale structure observations, $M_{\rm h} \sim 10^{10} \,M_\odot$ haloes have lower core densities than the…
Observations of high-redshift galaxies have provided us with a rich tool to study the physics at play during the epoch of reionisation. The luminosity function (LF) of these objects is an indirect tracer of the complex processes that govern galaxy formation, including those of the first dark-matter structures. In this work, we present an extensive analysis of the UV galaxy LF at high redshifts to extract cosmological and astrophysical parameters. We provide a number of phenomenological approaches in modelling the UV LF and take into account various sources of uncertainties and systematics in o…

We present GRAMSES, a new pipeline for nonlinear cosmological $N$-body simulations in General Relativity (GR). This code adopts the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism of GR, with constant mean curvature and minimum distortion gauge fixings, which provides a fully nonlinear and background independent framework for relativistic cosmology. Employing a fully constrained formulation, the Einstein equations are reduced to a set of ten elliptical equations which are solved using multigrid relaxation with adaptive mesh refinements (AMR), and three hyperbolic equations for the evolution of tensor de…
El Gordo (ACT-CL J0102-4915) is an extremely massive galaxy cluster ($M_{200} \approx 3 \times 10^{15}$ $M_{\odot}$) at redshift $z = 0.87 $ composed of two subclusters with mass ratio 3.6 merging at speed $V_{infall} \approx 2500$ km/s. Such a fast collision between individually rare massive clusters is unexpected in Lambda cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) cosmology at such high $z$. However, this is required for non-cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the merger to match its observed properties (Zhang et al. 2015). Here, we determine the probability of finding a similar object in a $Λ$CDM co…
Galaxies can be characterized by many internal properties such as stellar mass, gas metallicity, and star-formation rate. We quantify the amount of cosmological and astrophysical information that the internal properties of individual galaxies and their host dark matter halos contain. We train neural networks using hundreds of thousands of galaxies from 2,000 state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations with different cosmologies and astrophysical models of the CAMELS project to perform likelihood-free inference on the value of the cosmological and astrophysical parameters. We find that knowing th…
A near-future detection of the 21cm signal from the epoch of reionization will provide unique opportunities to probe the underlying cosmology, provided that such cosmological information can be extracted with precision. To this end, we further develop effective field theory (EFT) inspired techniques for the 21cm brightness temperature field during the epoch of reionization, incorporating renormalized bias and a treatment of redshift space distortions. Notably, we confirm that in redshift space, measures of the 21cm brightness, e.g the power spectrum, should have irreducible contributions that …
We use hydrodynamical simulations from the OWLS project to investigate the dependence of the physical properties of galaxy populations at redshift 2 on the assumed star formation law, the equation of state imposed on the unresolved interstellar medium, the stellar initial mass function, the reionization history, and the assumed cosmology. This work complements that of Paper I, where we studied the effects of varying models for galactic winds driven by star formation and AGN. The normalisation of the matter power spectrum strongly affects the galaxy mass function, but has a relatively small eff…
This is the third in a series of papers studying the astrophysics and cosmology of massive, dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters. Our sample comprises 40 clusters identified as being dynamically relaxed and hot (i.e., massive) in Papers I and II of this series. Here we consider the thermodynamics of the intracluster medium, in particular the profiles of density, temperature and related quantities, as well as integrated measurements of gas mass, average temperature, total luminosity and center-excluded luminosity. We fit power-law scaling relations of each of these quantities as a function of re…

We train deep learning models on thousands of galaxy catalogues from the state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations of the CAMELS project to perform regression and inference. We employ Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), architectures designed to work with irregular and sparse data, like the distribution of galaxies in the Universe. We first show that GNNs can learn to compute the power spectrum of galaxy catalogues with a few percent accuracy. We then train GNNs to perform likelihood-free inference at the galaxy-field level. Our models are able to infer the value of $Ω_{\rm m}$ with a $\sim12\%-13\%…
We present measurements of the spatial mapping between (hot) baryons and the total matter in the Universe, via the cross-correlation between the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) map from Planck and the weak gravitational lensing maps from the Red Sequence Cluster Survey (RCSLenS). The cross-correlations are performed on the map level where all the sources (including diffuse intergalactic gas) contribute to the signal. We consider two configuration-space correlation function estimators, $ξ^{ y-κ}$ and $ξ^ {y-γ_{t}}$, and a Fourier space estimator, $C_{\ell}^{y-κ}$, in our analysis. We detect a s…
Accurate cosmology from upcoming weak lensing surveys relies on knowledge of the total matter power spectrum at percent level at scales $k < 10$ $h$/Mpc, for which modelling the impact of baryonic physics is crucial. We compare measurements of the total matter power spectrum from the Horizon cosmological hydrodynamical simulations: a dark matter-only run, one with full baryonic physics, and another lacking Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback. Baryons cause a suppression of power at $k\simeq 10$ $h/$Mpc of $<15\%$ at $z=0$, and an enhancement of a factor of a few at smaller scales due to the …
