In this article we prove two main results. Firstly, we show that any six-line arrangement, consisting of three pairs of mutually perpendicular lines, does not give rise to a "very generic or sufficiently general" discriminantal arrangement in the sense of C. A. Athanasiadis \cite{MR1720104}. We give two proofs of the first result. The second result is as follows. The codimension-one boundary faces of (a region) a convex cone of a very generic discriminantal arrangement has not been characterized and is not known even though the intersection lattice of a very generic discriminantal arrangement is known. So secondly, we show that the number of simplex cells of the very generic hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{H}^m_n=\{H_i:\underset{j=1}{\overset{m}{\sum}}a_{ij}x_j=c_i,1\leq i\leq n\}$ may not be not precisely equal to the number of codimension-one boundary hyperplanes of $\mathbb{R}^n$ of the convex cone $C$ containing $(c_1,c_2,\ldots,c_n)$ in the associated very generic discriminantal arrangement. That is, for $1\leq i_1<i_2<\ldots<i_m<i_{m+1}\leq n$, if $Δ^m H_{i_1}H_{i_2}\ldots H_{i_m}H_{i_{m+1}}$ is a simplex cell of the hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{H}^m_n$ then it need not give rise to a codimension-one boundary hyperplane of the convex cone $C$ containing $(c_1,c_2,\ldots,c_n)$ in the associated very generic discriminantal arrangement. We finally mention an interesting open-ended remark before the appendix section.
In the appendix section we give a self contained exposition and describe combinatorially the intersection lattice of a (Zariski open and dense) class of "very generic or sufficiently general" discriminantal arrangements. As a consequence, we give a geometric description of the lattice elements as sets of concurrencies of the hyperplane arrangements which give the same "very generic or sufficiently general" discriminantal arrangement.
In this article we give a computational study of combinatorics of the discriminantal arrangements. The discriminantal arrangements are parametrized by two positive integers n and k such that n>k. The intersection lattice of the discriminantal arrangement with the parameter (n,k) is isomorphic to the intersection lattice of the hyperplane arrangement generated by n generic points in the d-dimensional vector space where d=n-k-1. The combinatorics of the discriminantal arrangements is very hard, except for the special cases of the Boolean arrangements (k=0) and the braid arrangements (k=1). We re…
The discriminantal arrangement is the space of configurations of $n$ hyperplanes in generic position in a $k$ dimensional space (see \cite{MS}). Differently from the case $k=1$ in which it corresponds to the well known braid arrangement, the discriminantal arrangement in the case $k>1$ has a combinatorics which depends from the choice of the original $n$ hyperplanes. It is known that this combinatorics is constant in an open Zariski set $\mathcal{Z}$, but to assess wether or not $n$ fixed hyperplanes in generic position belongs to $\mathcal{Z}$ proved to be a nontrivial problem. Even to simply…
We show that points in specific degree 2 hypersurfaces in the Grassmannian $Gr(3, n)$ correspond to generic arrangements of $n$ hyperplanes in $\mathbb{C}^3$ with associated discriminantal arrangement having intersections of multiplicity three in codimension two.
In 1985 Crapo introduced in \cite{Crapo} a new mathematical object that he called $\textit{geometry of circuits}$. Four years later, in 1989, Manin and Schechtman defined in \cite{MS} the same object and called it $\textit{discriminantal arrangement}$, the name by which it is known now a days. Those discriminantal arrangements $\mathcal{B}(n,k,\mathcal{A}^0)$ are builded from an arrangement $\mathcal{A}^0$ of $n$ hyperplanes in general position in a $k$-dimensional space and their combinatorics depends on the arrangement $\mathcal{A}^0$. On this basis, in 1997 Bayer and Brandt (see \cite{BB}) …
We relate the cohomology of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a discriminantal arrangement to the local system cohomology of the complement. The Orlik-Solomon algebra of such an arrangement (viewed as a complex) is shown to be a linear approximation of a complex arising from the fundamental group of the complement, the cohomology of which is isomorphic to that of the complement with coefficients in an arbitrary complex rank one local system. We also establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement of a discriminantal arrangement and the resonant varieties of its Orli…
We give an explicit description of the multiplicities of codimension two strata of discriminantal arrangements introduced by Manin and Schechtman. As applications, we discuss the connection of these results with properties of Gale transform and we calculate the fundamental groups of the complements to discriminantal arrangements.
We calculate the skew-symmetric cohomology of the complement of a discriminantal hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in local systems arising in the context of the representation theory of the Lie algebra sl_2. For a discriminantal arrangement in C^k, the skew-symmetric cohomology is nontrivial in dimension k-1 precisely when the "master function" which defines the local system on the complement has nonisolated critical points. In symmetric coordinates, the critical set is a union of lines. Generically, the dimension of this nontrivial skew-symmetric cohomology group is equal to the numbe…

In this article we prove in the main theorem that, there is a bijection between the isomorphism classes of a certain type of real hyperplane arrangements on the one hand, and the antipodal pairs of convex cones of an associated discriminantal arrangement on the other hand. The type of hyperplane arrangements considered and the isomorphism classes have been defined precisely. As a consequence we enumerate such isomorphism classes by computing the characteristic polynomial of the discriminantal arrangement. With a certain restriction, the enumerated value is shown to be independent of the discri…
We consider hyperplane arrangements generated by generic points and study their intersection lattices. These arrangements are known to be equivalent to discriminantal arrangements. We show a fundamental structure of the intersection lattices by decomposing the poset ideals as direct products of smaller lattices corresponding to smaller dimensions. Based on this decomposition we compute the Möbius functions of the lattices and the characteristic polynomials of the arrangements up to dimension six.
We construct bundles $E_k(\A,\F) \to M$ over the complement $M$ of a complex hyperplane arrangement \A, depending on an integer $k \geq 1$ and a set $\F=\{f_1, \ldots, f_μ\}$ of continuous functions $f_i \colon M \to \C$ whose differences are nonzero on $M$, generalizing the configuration space bundles arising in the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation of the pure braid group. We display such families \F\ for rank two arrangements, reflection arrangements of types $A_\ell$, $B_\ell$, $D_\ell$, $F_4$, and for arrangements supporting multinet structures with three classes, with the resulting…
Given an $\Bbb{F}$-represented matroid $(M,ρ)$ with the ground set $[m]$, the representation $ρ$ naturally defines a hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}_ρ$. We will study its parallel translates $\mathcal{A}_{ρ,{g}}$ of $\mathcal{A}_ρ$ for all ${ g}\in \mathbb{F}^m$. Its intersection semi-lattices $L(\mathcal{A}_{ρ,{ g}})$ and the characteristic polynomials $χ(\mathcal{A}_{ρ,{ g}},t)$ will be classified by the intersection lattice of the derived arrangement $\mathcal{A}_{δρ}$, which is a hyperplane arrangement associated with the derived matroid $(δM,δρ)$ and also known as the discriminantal a…
In this paper we build an Orlik-Solomon model for the canonical gradation of the cohomology algebra with integer coefficients of the complement of a toric arrangement. We give some results on the uniqueness of the representation of arithmetic matroids, in order to discuss how the Orlik-Solomon model depends on the poset of layers. The analysis of discriminantal toric arrangements permits us to isolate certain conditions under which two toric arrangements have diffeomorphic complements. We also give combinatorial conditions determining whether the cohomology algebra is generated in degree one.
The goal of this paper is to give a geometric construction of the Bethe algebra (of Hamiltonians) of a Gaudin model associated to a simple Lie algebra. More precisely, in this paper a quantum integrable model is assigned to a weighted arrangement of affine hyperplanes. We show (under certain assumptions) that the algebra of Hamiltonians of the model is isomorphic to the algebra of functions on the critical set of the corresponding master function. For a discriminantal arrangement we show (under certain assumptions) that the symmetric part of the algebra of Hamiltonians is isomorphic to the Bet…
The Szemerédi-Trotter theorem gives a bound on the maximum number of incidences between points and lines on the Euclidean plane. In particular it says that $n$ lines and $n$ points determine $O(n^{4/3})$ incidences. Let us suppose that an arrangement of $n$ lines and $n$ points defines $cn^{4/3}$ incidences, for a given positive $c.$ It is widely believed that such arrangements have special structure, but no results are known in this direction. Here we show that for any natural number, $k,$ one can find $k$ points of the arrangement in general position such that any pair of them is incident to…
In the category of free arrangements, inductively and recursively free arrangements are important. In particular, in the former, the conjecture by Terao asserting that freeness depends only on combinatorics holds true. A long standing problem whether all free arrangements are recursively free or not is settled by Cuntz and Hoge very recently, by giving a free but non-recursively free plane arrangement consisting of 27 planes. In this paper, we construct a free but non-recursively free plane arrangement consisting of 13 planes, and show that this example is the smallest in the sense of the card…
We show that the maximum likelihood degree of a smooth very affine variety is equal to the signed topological Euler characteristic. This generalizes Orlik and Terao's solution to Varchenko's conjecture on complements of hyperplane arrangements to smooth very affine varieties. For very affine varieties satisfying a genericity condition at infinity, the result is further strengthened to relate the variety of critical points to the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class. The strengthened version recovers the geometric deletion-restriction formula of Denham et al. for arrangement complements, and general…

The SHGH conjecture proposes a solution to the question of how many conditions a general union of fat points imposes on the complete linear system of curves in $\mathbb P^2$ of fixed degree $d$, and it is known to be true in many cases. We propose a new problem, namely to understand the number of conditions imposed by a general union of fat points on the incomplete linear system defined by the condition of passing through a given finite set of points $Z$ (not general). Motivated by work of Di Gennaro-Ilardi-Vallès and Faenzi-Vallès, we give a careful analysis for the case where there is a sing…
