Graphene-based moiré superlattices have recently emerged as a unique class of tuneable solid-state systems that exhibit significant optoelectronic activity. Local probing at length scales of the superlattice should provide deeper insight into the microscopic mechanisms of photoresponse and the exact role of the moiré lattice. Here, we employ a nanoscale probe to study photoresponse within a single moiré unit cell of minimally twisted bilayer graphene. Our measurements reveal a spatially rich photoresponse, whose sign and magnitude are governed by the fine structure of the moiré lattice and its orientation with respect to measurement contacts. This results in a strong directional effect and a striking spatial dependence of the gate-voltage response within the moiré domains. The spatial profile and carrier-density dependence of the measured photocurrent point towards a photo-thermoelectric induced response that is further corroborated by good agreement with numerical simulations. Our work shows sub-diffraction photocurrent spectroscopy is an exceptional tool for uncovering the optoelectronic properties of moiré superlattices.

Photo-bolometric effect is critically important in optoelectronic structures and devices employing metallic electrodes with nanoscale features due to heating caused by the plasmonic field enhancement. One peculiar case is individual silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and their networks. Ag NW-networks exhibit excellent thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties, providing a simple yet reliable alternative to common flexible transparent electrode materials used in optoelectronic devices. To date there have been no reports on the photoresponse of Ag NWs. In this work, we show that a single Ag NW and …
We report the photoresponse of vertically aligned graphene upon IR irradiation at room temperature. Four probe measurements have shown electrical switching in I-V characteristics during pulsed IR irradiation. The photoresponse reported here for vertically aligned graphene (VAG) is much higher than carbon nanotube (CNT) samples. Our investigation has shown that such photoresponse arise solely due to bolometric effect, where the conductivity changes with temperature. The magnitude of the resistance of VAGs increases by ~ 2 fold for 6 0C increase in temperature. Also the Thermal Coefficient of Re…
Graphene-metal nanoparticle hybrid materials potentially display not only the unique properties of metal nanoparticles and those of graphene, but also additional novel properties due to the interaction between graphene and nanoparticles. This study shows that gold nanoislands can be used to tailor the local electronic properties of graphene. Graphene on crystalline gold nanoislands exhibits moiré superlattices, which generate secondary Dirac points in the local density of states. Conversely, the graphene covered gold regions undergo a polycrystalline to Au(111) phase transition upon annealing.…
Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have recently attracted considerable attention, with appealing properties for terahertz (THz) technology. This includes the demonstration of large thermal bolometric effects in GQDs when illuminated by THz radiation. However, the interaction of THz photons with GQDs in the Coulomb blockade regime - single electron transport regime - remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate the ultrasensitive photoresponse to THz radiation (from <0.1 to 10 THz) of a hBN-encapsulated GQD in the Coulomb blockade regime at low temperature (170 mK). We show that THz radiation of $\sim$1…

We report mid-infrared photocurrent spectra of graphene nanoribbon arrays on SiO2 dielectrics showing dual signatures of the substrate interaction. First, hybrid polaritonic modes of graphene plasmons and dielectric surface polar phonons produce a thermal photocurrent in graphene with spectral features that are tunable by gate voltage, nanoribbon width, and light polarization. Secondly, phonon-polaritons associated with the substrate are excited, which indirectly heat up the graphene leading to a graphene photocurrent with fixed spectral features. Models for other commonly used substrates show…
We implemented a nanoelectronic interface between graphene field effect transistors (FETs) and soluble proteins. This enables production of bioelectronic devices that combine functionalities of the biomolecular and inorganic components. The method serves to link polyhistidine-tagged proteins to graphene FETs using the tag itself. Atomic Force Microscopy and Raman spectroscopy provide structural understanding of the bio/nano hybrid; current-gate voltage measurements are used to elucidate the electronic properties. As an example application, we functionalize graphene FETs with fluorescent protei…
Vertical heterostructures of van der Waals materials enable new pathways to tune charge and energy transport characteristics in nanoscale systems. We propose that graphene Schottky junctions can host a special kind of photoresponse which is characterized by strongly coupled heat and charge flows that run vertically out of the graphene plane. This regime can be accessed when vertical energy transport mediated by thermionic emission of hot carriers overwhelms electron-lattice cooling as well as lateral diffusive energy transport. As such, the power pumped into the system is efficiently extracted…

Graphene is an atomically thin plasmonic medium that supports highly confined plasmon polaritons, or nano-light, with very low loss. Electronic properties of graphene can be drastically altered when it is laid upon another graphene layer, resulting in a moiré superlattice. The relative twist angle between the two layers is a key tuning parameter of the interlayer coupling in thus obtained twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). We studied propagation of plasmon polaritons in TBG by infrared nano-imaging. We discovered that the atomic reconstruction occurring at small twist angles transforms the TBG in…
The edge physics of graphene based systems is well known to be highly sensitive to the atomic structure at the boundary, with localized zero mode edge states found only on the zigzag type termination of the lattice. Here we demonstrate that the graphene twist bilayer supports an additional class of edge states, that (i) are found for all edge geometries and thus are robust against edge roughness, (ii) occur at energies coinciding with twist induced van Hove singularities in the bulk and (iii) possess an electron density strongly modulated by the moiré lattice. Interestingly, these "moiré edge …
The generation of a current by light is a key process in optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. In band semiconductors, depletion fields associated with interfaces separate long-lived photo-induced carriers. However, in systems with strong electron-electron and electron-phonon correlations it is unclear what physics will dominate the photoresponse. Here we investigate photocurrent in a vanadium dioxide, an exemplary strongly correlated material known for its dramatic metal-insulator transition (MIT) at Tc = 68 C which could be useful for optoelectronic detection and switching up to ultraviol…
Different atomistic registry between the layers forming the inner and outer nanotubes can form one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals (vdW) moiré superlattices. Unlike the two-dimensional (2D) vdW moiré superlattices, effects of 1D vdW moiré superlattices on electronic and optical properties in 1D moiré superlattices are not well understood, and they are often neglected. In this Perspective, we summarize new experimental observations and theoretical perspectives related to interlayer interactions in double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs), a representative 1D vdW moiré system. Our discussion will f…
Two-dimensional hexagonal arrays of Pt nanoparticles (1.45 nm diameter) have been obtained by deposition of preformed and size selected Pt80 nanoparticles on graphene. This original self-organization is induced, at room temperature, by the 2D periodic undulation (the moiré pattern) of graphene epitaxially grown on the Ir(111) surface. By means of complementary techniques (scanning tunneling microscopy, grazing incidence X ray scattering), the Pt clusters shapes and organization are characterized and the structural evolution during annealing is investigated. The soft-landed clusters remain quas…
Graphene is a new material showing high promise in optoelectronics, photonics, and energy-harvesting applications. However, the underlying physical mechanism of optoelectronic response has not been established. Here, we report on the intrinsic optoelectronic response of high-quality dual-gated monolayer and bilayer graphene p-n junction devices. Local laser excitation at the p-n interface leads to striking six-fold photovoltage patterns as a function of bottom- and top-gate voltages. These patterns, together with the measured spatial and density dependence of the photoresponse, provide strong …
A continuum, post-deposition mesoscopic model of a Moiré-regulated self-assembly of metal nanoclusters on a twisted bilayer graphene is presented. Quasi-two-dimensional nanocluster-like steady states at a low adsorbate coverage are analytically determined for Pt, Ni, and Pb adsorbates, pointing that nanoclusters self-assemble at the Moiré cells centers. This is followed by the computations of nanoclusters self-assembly dynamics. Differences in the self-assembly efficiency for three chosen metals are highlighted across three typical values of an initial submonolayer coverage and for three tempe…
Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect, the well-known archetype of electron-wave interference phenomena, has been explored extensively through transport measurements. However, these techniques lack spatial resolution that would be indispensable for studying the magnetic and electrostatic AB oscillations at the nanometer scale. Here, we demonstrated that scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can be used as an AB interferometer operating on nanometer length scales and the magneto-electric Aharonov-Bohm effect in minimally twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) was directly measured by using STM. In the minimally TBG,…
We demonstrate that one-dimensional moiré patterns, analogous to those found in twisted bilayer graphene, can arise in collapsed chiral carbon nanotubes. Resorting to a combination of approaches, namely, molecular dynamics to obtain the relaxed geometries and tight-binding calculations validated against ab initio modeling, we find that magic angle physics occur in collapsed carbon nanotubes. Velocity reduction, flat bands and localization in AA regions with diminishing moiré angle are revealed, showing a magic angle close to 1$^{\rm o}$. From the spatial extension of the AA regions and the wid…
In long-wavelength moiré superlattices of stacked transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), structural reconstruction ubiquitously occurs, which has reported to impact significantly their electronic properties. However, complete microscopic understandings of the interplay between the lattice reconstruction and alteration of electronic properties, and their further response to external perturbations in the reconstructed TMDs moiré superlattice are still lacking. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) combined with first-principles calculation, w…
We report the nanoscale conductivity imaging of correlated electronic states in angle-aligned WSe2/WS2 heterostructures using microwave impedance microscopy. The noncontact microwave probe allows us to observe the Mott insulating state with one hole per moiré unit cell that persists for temperatures up to 150 K, consistent with other characterization techniques. In addition, we identify for the first time a Mott insulating state at one electron per moiré unit cell. Appreciable inhomogeneity of the correlated states is directly visualized in the hetero-bilayer region, indicative of local disord…
Highly uniform and ordered nanodot arrays are crucial for high performance quantum optoelectronics including new semiconductor lasers and single photon emitters, and for synthesizing artificial lattices of interacting quasiparticles towards quantum information processing and simulation of many-body physics. Van der Waals heterostructures of 2D semiconductors are naturally endowed with an ordered nanoscale landscape, i.e. the moiré pattern that laterally modulates electronic and topographic structures. Here we find these moiré effects realize superstructures of nanodot confinements for long-liv…

By atomistic modeling of moir{é} patterns of graphene on a substrate with a small lattice mismatch, we find qualitatively different strain distributions for small and large misorientation angles, corresponding to the commensurate-incommensurate transition recently observed in graphene on hexagonal BN. We find that the ratio of C-N and C-B interactions is the main parameter determining the different bond lengths in the center and edges of the moir{é} pattern. Agreement with experimental data is obtained only by assuming that the C-B interactions are at least twice weaker than the C-N interactio…
In moiré crystals formed by stacking van der Waals (vdW) materials, surprisingly diverse correlated electronic phases and optical properties can be realized by a subtle change in the twist angle. Here, we discover that phonon spectra are also renormalized in MoS$_2$ twisted bilayers, adding a new perspective to moiré physics. Over a range of small twist angles, the phonon spectra evolve rapidly due to ultra-strong coupling between different phonon modes and atomic reconstructions of the moiré pattern. We develop a new low-energy continuum model for phonons that overcomes the outstanding challe…
Bilayer graphene was theorized to host a moire miniband with flat dispersion if the layers are stacked at specific twist angles known as the magic angles. Recently, such twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) with the first magic angle twist was reported to exhibit correlated insulating state and superconductivity, where the presence of the flat miniband in the system is thought to be essential for the emergence of these ordered phases in the transport measurements. Tunneling spectroscopy and electronic compressibility measurements in tBLG have revealed a van Hove singularity that is consistent with …
In van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by stacking two monolayer semiconductors, lattice mismatch or rotational misalignment introduces an in-plane moiré superlattice. While it is widely recognized that a moiré superlattice can modulate the electronic band structure and lead to novel transport properties including unconventional superconductivity and insulating behavior driven by correlations, its influence on optical properties has not been investigated experimentally. We present spectroscopic evidence that interlayer excitons are confined by the moiré potential in a high-quality MoSe…
Controlling matter-light interactions with cavities is of fundamental importance in modern science and technology. It is exemplified in the strong-coupling regime, where matter-light hybrid modes form, with properties controllable via the photon component on the optical-wavelength scale. In contrast, matter excitations on the nanometer scale are harder to access. In two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, a tunable moiré lattice potential for electronic excitations may form, enabling correlated electron gases in lattice potentials. Excitons confined in moiré lattices have also been rep…
We show that a sliding motion between the two layers of a \moire superlattice induces an electric current and realizes a two-dimensional version of the topological Thouless pump when the Fermi energy lies in one of the minigaps. Interestingly, a chiral charge pump, namely, a transverse current induced by the sliding motion, is possible in twisted homobilayers. This result is confirmed by a concrete calculation of the adiabatic current in twisted bilayer graphene. Our work reveals an interesting link between mechanical motion and electricity unique to \moire superlattices, and may find applicat…
The optical and electronic properties of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures depend strongly on the atomic stacking order of the constituent layers. This is exemplified by periodic variation of the local atomic registry, known as moire patterns, giving rise to superconductivity and ferromagnetism in twisted bilayer graphene and novel exciton states in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) heterobilayers. However, the presence of the nanometer-scale moire superlattices is typically deduced indirectly, because conventional imaging techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), req…
Quasi-periodic moiré patterns and their effect on electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) have been intensely studied. At small twist angle $θ$, due to atomic reconstruction, the moiré superlattice morphs into a network of narrow domain walls separating micron-scale AB and BA stacking regions. We use scanning probe photocurrent imaging to resolve nanoscale variations of the Seebeck coefficient occurring at these domain walls. The observed features become enhanced in a range of mid-infrared frequencies where the hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which we use as a TBG substrate, is …
Moiré superlattices that consist of two or more layers of two-dimensional materials stacked together with a small twist angle have emerged as a tunable platform to realize various correlated and topological phases, such as Mott insulators, unconventional uperconductivity and quantum anomalous Hall effect. Recently, the magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) has shown both robust superconductivity similar to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) and other unique properties, including the Pauli-limit violating and re-entrant superconductivity. These rich properties are deeply roote…
Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by 2D atomic crystals provide a powerful approach towards designer condensed matter systems. Incommensurate heterobilayers with small twisting and/or lattice mismatch lead to the interesting concept of Moiré superlattice, where the atomic registry is locally indistinguishable from commensurate bilayers but has local-to-local variation over long range. Here we show that such Moiré superlattice can lead to periodic modulation of local topological order in vdW heterobilayers formed by two massive Dirac materials. By tuning the vdW heterojunction from no…
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers have recently emerged as a robust and tunable moiré system for studying and designing correlated electron physics. In this work, by combining large-scale first principle calculation and continuum model approach, we provide an electronic structure theory that maps long-period heterobilayer TMD superlattices onto diatomic crystals with cations and anions. We find that the interplay between moiré potential and Coulomb interaction leads to filling-dependent charge transfer between MM and MX regions several nanometers apart. We show that the insulating…
The direct experimental probing of locally varying lattice parameters and anisotropic lattice deformations in atomic multilayers is extremely challenging. Here, we develop a new combined numerical/graphical method for the analysis of irregular moiré superstructures measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on a small-twist-angle ($\sim$0.6$^{\circ}$) graphene on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (gr/HOPG). We observe distorted moiré patterns with a spatially varying period in annealed gr/HOPG. The nanoscale modulation of the moiré period observed by STM reflects a locally strained (and …
We investigate the magnetic proximity effect in van der Waals heterostructure formed by a monolayer semiconductor stacked on a 2D ferromagnet, where the lattice mismatch and twisting between the layers typically lead to the formation of moiré pattern. We find that the magnetic proximity effect arising from the spin dependent interlayer coupling depends sensitively on the interlayer atomic registry. Consequently, in the moiré pattern, the spatial variation of the atomic registry leads to a lateral modulation of magnetic proximity field. Such moiré modulated magnetic proximity effect manifests a…
Molecular and atomic imaging required the development of electron and scanning probe microscopies to surpass the physical limits dictated by diffraction. Nano-infrared experiments and pico-cavity tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy imaging later demonstrated that radiation in the visible range can surpass this limit by using scanning probe tips to access the near-field regime. Here we show that ultimate resolution can be obtained by using scanning microwave imaging microscopy to reveal structures with feature sizes down to 1~nm using a radiation of 0.1~m in wavelength. As a test material we use tw…
Moiré superlattices in graphene supported on various substrates have opened a new avenue to engineer graphene's electronic properties. Yet, the exact crystallographic structure on which their band structure depends remains highly debated. In this scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory study, we have analysed graphene samples grown on multilayer graphene prepared onto SiC and on the close-packed surfaces of Re and Ir with ultra-high precision. We resolve small-angle twists and shears in graphene, and identify large unit cells comprising more than 1,000 carbon atoms and exhi…
Two-dimensional heterostructures with layers of slightly different lattice vectors exhibit a new periodic structure known as moire lattices. Moire lattice formation provides a powerful new way to engineer the electronic structure of two-dimensional materials for realizing novel correlated and topological phenomena. In addition, superstructures of moire lattices can emerge from multiple misaligned lattice vectors or inhomogeneous strain distribution, which offers an extra degree of freedom in the electronic band structure design. High-resolution imaging of the moire lattices and superstructures…
In van der Waals heterostructures, the periodic potential from the Moiré superlattice can be used as a control knob to modulate the electronic structure of the constituent materials. Here we present a nanoscale angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (Nano-ARPES) study of transferred graphene/h-BN heterostructures with two different stacking angles of 2.4° and 4.3° respectively. Our measurements reveal six replicas of graphene Dirac cones at the superlattice Brillouin zone (SBZ) centers. The size of the SBZ and its relative rotation angle to the graphene BZ are in good agreement with Moiré s…
Encapsulating graphene in hexagonal Boron Nitride has several advantages: the highest mobilities reported to date are achieved in this way, and precise nanostructuring of graphene becomes feasible through the protective hBN layers. Nevertheless, subtle effects may arise due to the differing lattice constants of graphene and hBN, and due to the twist angle between the graphene and hBN lattices. Here, we use a recently developed model which allows us to perform band structure and magnetotransport calculations of such structures, and show that with a proper account of the moiré physics an excelle…
