Stochastic network-dynamics are typically assumed to be memory-less. Involving prolonged dwells interrupted by instantaneous transitions between nodes such Markov networks stand as a coarse-graining paradigm for chemical reactions, gene expression, molecular machines, spreading of diseases, protein dynamics, diffusion in energy landscapes, epigenetics and many others. However, as soon as transitions cease to be negligibly short, as often observed in experiments, the dynamics develops a memory. That is, state-changes depend not only on the present state but also on the past. Here, we establish the first thermodynamically consistent -- dissipation-preserving -- mapping of continuous dynamics onto a network, which reveals ingrained dynamical symmetries and an unforeseen kinetic hysteresis. These symmetries impose three independent sources of fluctuations in state-to state kinetics that determine the `flavor of memory'. The hysteresis between the forward/backward in time coarse-graining of continuous trajectories implies a new paradigm for the thermodynamics of active molecular processes in the presence of memory, that is, beyond the assumption of local detailed balance. Our results provide a new understanding of fluctuations in the operation of molecular machines as well as catch-bonds involved in cellular adhesion.
The physical kinetics of single domain ferroelectric materials are studied using Landau-Khalatnikov equation. The hysteretic curves are obtained numerically. The effective coercive electric field theoretically varies with the driving amplitude and frequency. The effects of thermal noise are explored using the Fokker-Planck kinetic equation. The ferroelectric switching times are discussed and Quantum effects are briefly explored.
In this work we tackle a kinetic-like model of opinions dynamics in a networked population endued with a quenched plurality and polarization. Additionally, we consider pairwise interactions that are restrictive, which is modeled with a smooth bounded confidence. Our results show the interesting emergence of nonequilibrium hysteresis and heterogeneity-assisted ordering. Such counterintuitive phenomena are robust to different types of network architectures such as random, small-world and scale-free.
We study the effects of next-nearest neighbor (NNN) interaction on the dynamic phase transition (DPT) and hysteresis loop area law in the two-dimensional ferromagnetic kinetic Ising model. We find that inclusion of the NNN interaction causes the DPT boundary of the NN kinetic Ising model to shift to larger values of magnetic field and temperature. The NNN kinetic Ising model can therefore exhibit an interaction induced DPT. Also in the low frequency limit (f$\to$0) the hysteresis loop area law, A(h$_{o}$,f), changes from h$^{0.70}_{o}$f$^{0.36}$ (NN) to h$^{0.14\pm 0.01}_{o}$f$^{0.13\pm0.01}$ …
We present the first systematic observation of scaling of thermal hysteresis with the temperature scanning rate around an abrupt thermodynamic transition in correlated electron systems. We show that the depth of supercooling and superheating in vanadium sesquioxide (V2O3) shifts with the temperature quench rates. The dynamic scaling exponent is close to the mean field prediction of 2/3. These observations, combined with the purely dissipative continuous ordering seen in "quench-and-hold" experiments, indicate departures from classical nucleation theory toward a barrier-free phase ordering asso…
Experiments on ferromagnetic thin films have measured the dependence of the hysteresis loop area on the amplitude and frequency of the external field, $A$=$A(H_{0},ω)$, and approximate agreement with numerical simulations of Ising models has been reported. Here we present numerical and theoretical calculations of $A$ in the low-frequency regime for two values of $H_{0}$, which bracket a temperature and system-size dependent crossover field. Our previous Monte Carlo studies have shown that the hysteretic response of the kinetic Ising model is qualitatively different for amplitudes above and bel…
We briefly introduce hysteresis in spatially extended systems and the dynamic phase transition observed as the frequency of the oscillating field increases beyond a critical value. Hysteresis and the decay of metastable phases are closely related phenomena, and a dynamic phase transition can occur only for field amplitudes, temperatures, and system sizes at which the metastable phase decays through nucleation and growth of many droplets. We present preliminary results from extensive Monte Carlo simulations of a two-dimensional kinetic Ising model in a square-wave oscillating field and estimate…
We study hysteresis for a two-dimensional, spin-1/2, nearest-neighbor, kinetic Ising ferromagnet in an oscillating field, using Monte Carlo simulations and analytical theory. Attention is focused on small systems and weak field amplitudes at a temperature below $T_{c}$. For these restricted parameters, the magnetization switches through random nucleation of a single droplet of spins aligned with the applied field. We analyze the stochastic hysteresis observed in this parameter regime, using time-dependent nucleation theory and the theory of variable-rate Markov processes. The theory enables us…
We discuss the phenomenology of phase transitions studied with two control variables. Such measurements have become routine with magnetic field and temperature being varied for 1st order magnetic transitions with an ease not conceivable with pressure and temperature. Similar ease may be possible with electric field as the second control variable, as in current studies on multiferroics. We develop this phenomenology for broad 1st order transitions that occur over a range of the control variable, as is common in substitutional alloys with inherent quenched disorder, including the possibility of …
Kinetically constrained spin systems play an important role in understanding key properties of the dynamics of slowly relaxing materials, such as glasses. So far kinetic constraints have been introduced in idealised models aiming to capture specific dynamical properties of these systems. However, recently it has been experimentally shown by [M. Valado et al., arXiv:1508.04384 (2015)] that manifest kinetic constraints indeed govern the evolution of strongly interacting gases of highly excited atoms in a noisy environment. Motivated by this development we address and discuss the question concern…
We introduce a simple nonequilibrium model for a driven diffusive system with nonconservative reaction kinetics which exhibits ergodicity breaking and hysteresis in one dimension. These phenomena can be understood through a description of the dominant stochastic many-body dynamics in terms of an equilibrium single-particle problem, viz. the random motion of a shock in an effective potential. This picture also leads to the exact phase diagram of the system and suggests a new generic mechanism for "freezing by heating".
Frequency evolutions of hysteresis loop area and hysteresis tools such as remanence and coercivity of a kinetic Ising model in the presence of quenched bond dilution are investigated in detail. The kinetic equation describing the time dependence of the magnetization is derived by means of effective-field theory with single-site correlations. It is found that the frequency dispersions of hysteresis loop area, remanence and coercivity strongly depend on the quenched bond randomness, as well as applied field amplitude and oscillation frequency. In addition, the shape of the hysteresis curves for …
The decay of the hysteresis loop area of the system, which is obeying a site diluted kinetic Ising model, is considered by the disorder parameter using the effective field theory analysis. The exhibition focuses on the understanding of external field frequency, amplitude and the site concentration dependency of the hysteresis loop area for several powerful treatments. Important characteristics of the hysteretic response, such as frequency dispersion, effect of domain nucleation phenomenon on the dynamic process etc. has been introduced together with well known other characteristics. An attempt…
We construct a set of exact, highly excited eigenstates for a nonintegrable spin-1/2 model in one dimension that is relevant to experiments on Rydberg atoms in the antiblockade regime. These states provide a new solvable example of quantum many-body scars: their sub-volume-law entanglement and equal energy spacing allow for infinitely long-lived coherent oscillations of local observables following a suitable quantum quench. While previous works on scars have interpreted such oscillations in terms of the precession of an emergent macroscopic SU(2) spin, the present model evades this description…

We propose an interacting lattice gas model of structural glass characterized by particle distinguishability and site-particle-dependent random nearest-neighboring particle interactions. This incorporates disorder quenched in the configuration space rather than in the physical space. The model exhibits non-trivial energetics while still admitting exact equilibrium states directly constructible at arbitrary temperature and density. The dynamics is defined by activated hopping following standard kinetic Monte Carlo approach without explicit facilitation rule. Kinetic simulations show emergent dy…
Within the framework of Lorentz model for description of viscoelastic medium the influence of deformational defect of the shear modulus is studied on melting of ultrathin lubricant film confined between the atomically flat solid surfaces. The possibility of jump-like and continuous melting is shown. Three modes of lubricant behavior are found, which correspond to the zero shear stress, the Hooke section of loading diagram, and the domain of plastic flow. Transition between these modes can take place according to mechanisms of first-order and second-order phase transitions. Hysteresis of depend…
We examine hysteresis in cyclic voltammetry of Br electrosorption onto single-crystal Ag(100) by dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. At room temperature, this system displays a second-order phase transition from a low-coverage disordered phase to a doubly degenerate $c (2 \times 2)$ phase. The electrochemical potential is ramped back and forth across the phase transition, linearly in time, and the phase lag between the response of the adlayer and the potential is observed to depend on the sweep rate. The hysteresis in this system is caused by slow ordering/disordering kinetics and critical slowin…
We modify the kinetic Ising model with Metropolis dynamics, allowing each spin to interact only with $q$ spins randomly chosen from the whole system, which corresponds to the topology of a complete graph. We show that the model with $q \ge 3$ exhibits a phase transition between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases at temperature $T^*$, which linearly increases with $q$. Moreover, we show that for $q=3$ the phase transition is continuous and discontinuous for larger values of $q$. For $q>3$ the hysteresis exhibits oscillatory behavior -- expanding for even values of $q$ and shrinking for odd v…
Many-body systems can have multiple equilibria. Though the energy of equilibria might be the same, still systems may resist to switch from an unfavored equilibrium to a favored one. In this paper we investigate occurrence of such phenomenon in economic networks. In times of crisis when governments intend to stimulate economy, a relevant question is on the proper size of stimulus bill. To address the answer, we emphasize the role of hysteresis in economic networks. In times of crises, firms and corporations cut their productions; now since their level of activity is correlated, metastable featu…
We study hysteresis for a two-dimensional, spin-1/2, nearest-neighbor, kinetic Ising ferromagnet in an oscillating field, using Monte Carlo simulations. The period-averaged magnetization is the order parameter for a proposed dynamic phase transition (DPT). To quantify the nature of this transition, we present the first finite-size scaling study of the DPT for this model. Evidence of a diverging correlation length is given, and we provide estimates of the transition frequency and the critical indices $β$, $γ$ and $ν$.
The nonequilibrium dynamic phase transition, in the kinetic Ising model in presence of an oscillating magnetic field, has been studied both by Monte Carlo simulation (in two dimension) and by solving the meanfield dynamical equation of motion for the average magnetization. The temperature variations of hysteretic loss (loop area) and the dynamic correlation have been studied near the transition point. The transition point has been identified as the minimum-correlation point. The hysteretic loss becomes maximum above the transition point. An analytical formulation has been developed to analyse …
An Enskog-like kinetic equation for self-propelled particles is solved numerically. I study a density instability near the transition to collective motion and find that while hydrodynamics breaks down, the kinetic approach leads to soliton-like supersonic waves with steep leading kinks and Knudsen numbers of order one. These waves show hysteresis, modify the transition threshold and lead to an abrupt jump of the global order parameter if the noise level is changed. Thus they provide a mechanism to change the second-order character of the phase transition to first order.
Based on the Zimm-Bragg model we study cooperative helix-coil transition driven by a finite-speed change of temperature. There is an asymmetry between the coil-to-helix and helix-to-coil transition: the latter is displayed already for finite speeds, and takes shorter time than the former. This hysteresis effect has been observed experimentally, and it is explained here via quantifying system's stability in the vicinity of the critical temperature. A finite-speed cooling induces a non-equilibrium helical phase with the correlation length larger than in equilibrium. In this phase the characteris…
We study a two-dimensional kinetic Ising model with Swendsen-Wang dynamics, replacing the usual percolation on top of Ising clusters by explosive percolation. The model exhibits a reversible first-order phase transition with hysteresis. Surprisingly, at the transition flanks the global bond density seems to be equal to the percolation thresholds.
Hysteresis is studied for a two-dimensional, spin-1/2, nearest-neighbor, kinetic Ising ferromagnet in an oscillating field, using Monte Carlo simulations and analytical theory. Attention is focused on large systems and strong field amplitudes at a temperature below T_c. In this parameter regime, the magnetization switches through random nucleation and subsequent growth of many droplets of spins aligned with the applied field. Using a time-dependent extension of the Kolmogorov-Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (KJMA) theory of metastable decay, we analyze the statistical properties of the hysteresis-loop are…
We investigate the stationary-state fluctuations of a growing one-dimensional interface described by the KPZ dynamics with a noise featuring smooth spatial correlations of characteristic range $ξ$. We employ Non-perturbative Functional Renormalization Group methods in order to resolve the properties of the system at all scales. We show that the physics of the standard (uncorrelated) KPZ equation emerges on large scales independently of $ξ$. Moreover, the Renormalization Group flow is followed from the initial condition to the fixed point, that is from the microscopic dynamics to the large-dist…
From a mathematical model that describes a complex chemical kinetic system of $N$ species and $M$ elementrary reactions in a rapidly stirred vessel of size $V$ as a Markov process, we show that a macroscopic chemical thermodynamics emerges as $V\rightarrow\infty$. The theory is applicable to linear and nonlinear reactions, closed systems reaching chemical equilibrium, or open, driven systems approaching to nonequilibrium steady states. A generalized mesoscopic free energy gives rise to a macroscopic chemical energy function $φ^{ss}(\vx)$ where $\vx=(x_1,\cdots,x_N)$ are the concentrations of t…
Hysteresis in cycling through first-order phase transitions in vortex matter, akin to the well-studied phenomenon of supercooling of water, has been discussed in literature. Hysteresis can be seen while varying either temperature T or magnetic field H (and thus the density of vortices). Our recent work on phase transitions with two control variables shows that the observable region of metastability of the supercooled phase would depend on the path followed in H-T space, and will be larger when T is lowered at constant H compared to the case when H is lowered at constant T. We discuss the effec…

The hypothesis of molecular chaos plays the central role in kinetic theory, which provides a closure leading to the Boltzmann equation for quantitative description of classic fluids. Yet how to properly extend it to active systems is still an open question in nonequilibrium physics. Combining experiment, simulation, and theory, we investigate the emergent collective behaviors of self-propelled particles that exhibit collision avoidance, a moving strategy commonly adopted in natural and engineering active systems. This dense active system shows unusual phase dynamics strongly regulated by many-…
We study dynamics of a locally conserved energy in ergodic, local many-body quantum systems on a lattice with no additional symmetry. The resulting dynamics is well approximated by a coarse grained, classical linear functional diffusion equation for the probability of all spatial configurations of energy. This is equivalent to nonlinear stochastic hydrodynamics, describing the diffusion of energy in physical spacetime. We find the absence of non-hydrodynamic slow degrees of freedom, a nonlinear fluctuation-dissipation theorem, and the emergence of a (weakly interacting) kinetic theory for hydr…
