We prove a general Russo-Seymour-Welsh result valid for any invariant planar percolation process satisfying positive association. This means that the probability of crossing a rectangle in the long direction is related by a homeomorphism to the probability of crossing it in the short direction. This homeomorphism is universal in the sense that it depends only on the aspect ratio of the rectangle, and is uniform in the scale and the considered model.
We prove that in the critical Bernoulli percolation on two dimensional lattice slabs the probabilities of open left-right crossings of rectangles with any given aspect ratio are uniformly positive.
We study the following problem for critical site percolation on the triangular lattice. Let A and B be sites on a horizontal line e separated by distance n. Consider, in the half-plane above e, the lowest occupied crossing R from the half-line left of A to the half-line right of B. We show that the probability that R has a site at distance smaller than m from AB is of order (log (n/m))^{-1}, uniformly in 1 <= m < n/2. Much of our analysis can be carried out for other two-dimensional lattices as well.
We answer a question of Ahlberg and Steif (2014) by finding the tail behaviour of the crossing probability in near-critical planar percolation. Interestingly, this superexponentially small behaviour is different from the case of dynamical percolation, where the analogous tail probability was proved to be at least exponential and at most superpolynomial by Hammond, Mossel and Pete (2012). The proof is simple, given the scale covariance established by Garban, Pete and Schramm (2013).
An exact formula is given for the probability that there exists a spanning cluster between opposite boundaries of an annulus, in the scaling limit of critical percolation. The entire distribution function for the number of distinct spanning clusters is also given. These results are found using Coulomb gas methods. Their forms are compared with the expectations of conformal field theory.
We consider a first-passage percolation model on a Delaunay triangulation of the plane. In this model each edge is independently equipped with a nonnegative random variable, with distribution function F, which is interpreted as the time it takes to traverse the edge. Vahidi-Asl and Wierman have shown that, under a suitable moment condition on F, the minimum time taken to reach a point x from the origin 0 is asymptotically μ(F)|x|, where μ(F) is a nonnegative finite constant. However the exact value of the time constant μ(F) still a fundamental problem in percolation theory. Here we prove that …
We consider several aspects of the scaling limit of percolation on random planar triangulations, both finite and infinite. The equivalents for random maps of Cardy's formula for the limit under scaling of various crossing probabilities are given. The limit probabilities are expressed in terms of simple events regarding Airy-Levy processes. Some explicit formulas for limit probabilities follow from this relation by applying known results on stable processes. Conversely, natural symmetries of the random maps imply identities concerning the Airy-Levy processes.
We prove annealed scaling relations for planar Voronoi percolation. To our knowledge, this is the first result of this kind for a continuum percolation model. We are mostly inspired by the proof of scaling relations for Bernoulli percolation by Kesten [Kes87]. Along the way, we show an annealed quasi-multiplicativity property by relying on the quenched box-crossing property proved by Ahlberg, Griffiths, Morris and Tassion [AGMT16]. Intermediate results also include the study of quenched and annealed notions of pivotal events and the extension of the quenched box-crossing property of [AGMT16] t…
The study of crossing probabilities - i.e. probabilities of existence of paths crossing rectangles - has been at the heart of the theory of two-dimensional percolation since its beginning. They may be used to prove a number of results on the model, including speed of mixing, tails of decay of the connectivity probabilities, scaling relations, etc. In this article, we develop a renormalization scheme for crossing probabilities in the two-dimensional random-cluster model. The outcome of the process is a precise description of an alternative between four behaviors: - Subcritical: Crossing probabi…
We prove that the standard Russo-Seymour-Welsh theory is valid for Voronoi percolation. This implies that at criticality the crossing probabilities for rectangles are bounded by constants depending only on their aspect ratio. This result has many consequences, such as the polynomial decay of the one-arm event at criticality.
For the site percolation model on the triangular lattice and certain generalizations for which Cardy's Formula has been established we acquire a power law estimate for the \emph{rate} of convergence of the crossing probabilities to Cardy's Formula.
Using conformal field theory, we derive several new crossing formulas at the two-dimensional percolation point. High-precision simulation confirms these results. Integrating them gives a unified derivation of Cardy's formula for the horizontal crossing probability $Π_h(r)$, Watts' formula for the horizontal-vertical crossing probability $Π_{hv}(r)$, and Cardy's formula for the expected number of clusters crossing horizontally $\mathcal{N}_h(r)$. The main step in our approach implies the identification of the derivative of one primary operator with another. We present operator identities that s…
It was argued by Schramm and Smirnov that the critical site percolation exploration path on the triangular lattice converges in distribution to the trace of chordal SLE(6). We provide here a detailed proof, which relies on Smirnov's theorem that crossing probabilities have a conformally invariant scaling limit (given by Cardy's formula). The version of convergence to SLE(6) that we prove suffices for the Smirnov-Werner derivation of certain critical percolation crossing exponents and for our analysis of the critical percolation full scaling limit as a process of continuum nonsimple loops.
We consider the FK-Ising model in two dimensions at criticality. We obtain bounds on crossing probabilities of arbitrary topological rectangles, uniform with respect to the boundary conditions, generalizing results of [DCHN11] and [CS12]. Our result relies on new discrete complex analysis techniques, introduced in [Che12]. We detail some applications, in particular the computation of so-called universal exponents, the proof of quasi-multiplicativity properties of arm probabilities, and bounds on crossing probabilities for the classical Ising model.
2D Percolation path exponents $x^{\cal P}_{\ell}$ describe probabilities for traversals of annuli by $\ell$ non-overlapping paths, each on either occupied or vacant clusters, with at least one of each type. We relate the probabilities rigorously to amplitudes of $O(N=1)$ models whose exponents, believed to be exact, yield $x^{\cal P}_{\ell}=({\ell}^2-1)/12$. This extends to half-integers the Saleur--Duplantier exponents for $k=\ell/2$ clusters, yields the exact fractal dimension of the external cluster perimeter, $D_{EP}=2-x^{\cal P}_3=4/3$, and also explains the absence of narrow gate fjords,…
We study Mandelbrot's percolation process in dimension $d \geq 2$. The process generates random fractal sets by an iterative procedure which starts by dividing the unit cube $[0,1]^d$ in $N^d$ subcubes, and independently retaining or discarding each subcube with probability $p$ or $1-p$ respectively. This step is then repeated within the retained subcubes at all scales. As $p$ is varied, there is a percolation phase transition in terms of paths for all $d \geq 2$, and in terms of $(d-1)$-dimensional "sheets" for all $d \geq 3$. For any $d \geq 2$, we consider the random fractal set produced at…
We prove that crossing probabilities for the critical planar Ising model with free boundary conditions are conformally invariant in the scaling limit, a phenomenon first investigated numerically by Langlands, Lewis and Saint-Aubin. We do so by establishing the convergence of certain exploration processes towards SLE$(3,\frac{-3}2,\frac{-3}2)$. We also construct an exploration tree for free boundary conditions, analogous to the one introduced by Sheffield.
We study bond percolation for a family of infinite hyperbolic graphs. We relate percolation to the appearance of homology in finite versions of these graphs. As a consequence, we derive an upper bound on the critical probabilities of the infinite graphs.
For the exactly solvable model of exponential last passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, consider the geodesic $Γ_n$ joining $(0,0)$ and $(n,n)$ for large $n$. It is well known that the transversal fluctuation of $Γ_n$ around the line $x=y$ is $n^{2/3+o(1)}$ with high probability. We obtain the exponent governing the decay of the small ball probability for $Γ_{n}$ and establish that for small $δ$, the probability that $Γ_{n}$ is contained in a strip of width $δn^{2/3}$ around the diagonal is $\exp (-Θ(δ^{-3/2}))$ uniformly in high $n$. We also obtain optimal small deviation estimates for the …
We prove convergence results for variants of Smirnov's fermionic observable in the critical Ising model in presence of free boundary conditions. One application of our analysis is a simple proof of a theorem by Hongler and Kytölä on convergence of critical Ising interfaces with plus-minus-free boundary conditions to dipolar SLE(3), and generalization of this result to arbitrary number of arcs carrying plus, minus or free boundary conditions. Another application is a computation of scaling limits of crossing probabilities in FK-Ising model with arbitrary number of alternating wired/free boundar…
We prove that the probability of crossing a large square in quenched Voronoi percolation converges to 1/2 at criticality, confirming a conjecture of Benjamini, Kalai and Schramm from 1999. The main new tools are a quenched version of the box-crossing property for Voronoi percolation at criticality, and an Efron-Stein type bound on the variance of the probability of the crossing event in terms of the sum of the squares of the influences. As a corollary of the proof, we moreover obtain that the quenched crossing event at criticality is almost surely noise sensitive.
In this work, we consider critical planar site percolation on the triangular lattice and derive sharp estimates on the asymptotics of the probability of half-plane $j$-arm events for $j \geq 1$ and planar (polychromatic) $j$-arm events for $j>1$. These estimates greatly improve previous results and in particular answer (a large part of) a question of Schramm (ICM Proc., 2006).
We prove that near-critical percolation and dynamical percolation on the triangular lattice $η\mathbb{T}$ have a scaling limit as the mesh $η\to 0$, in the "quad-crossing" space $\mathcal{H}$ of percolation configurations introduced by Schramm and Smirnov. The proof essentially proceeds by "perturbing" the scaling limit of the critical model, using the pivotal measures studied in our earlier paper. Markovianity and conformal covariance of these new limiting objects are also established.
Any infinite graph has site and bond percolation critical probabilities satisfying $p_c^{site}\geq p_c^{bond}$. The strict version of this inequality holds for many, but not all, infinite graphs. In this paper, the class of graphs for which the strict inequality holds is extended to a continuum percolation model. In Gilbert's graph with supercritical density on the Euclidean plane, there is almost surely a unique infinite connected component. We show that on this component $p_c^{site} > p_c^{bond}$. This also holds in higher dimensions.
Let $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ be a sequence of transitive infinite connected graphs with $\sup\limits_{n\geq 1} p_c(G_n) < 1,$ where each $p_c(G_n)$ is bond percolation critical probability on $G_n.$ Schramm (2008) conjectured that if $G_n$ converges locally to a transitive infinite connected graph $G,$ then $p_c(G_n) \rightarrow p_c(G)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty.$ We prove the conjecture when $G$ satisfies two rough uniformities, and $\{G_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ is uniformly nonamenable.
Consider critical site percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d \geq 2$. We prove a lower bound of order $n^{- d^2}$ for point-to-point connection probabilities, where $n$ is the distance between the points. Most of the work in our proof concerns a `construction' which finally reduces the problem to a topological one. This is then solved by applying a topological fact, which follows from Brouwer's fixed point theorem. Our bound improves the lower bound with exponent $2 d (d-1)$, used by Cerf in 2015 to obtain an upper bound for the so-called two-arm probabilities. Apart from being of interest in …
We consider independent edge percolation models on Z, with edge occupation probabilities p_<x,y> = p if |x-y| = 1, 1 - exp{- beta / |x-y|^2} otherwise. We prove that oriented percolation occurs when beta > 1 provided p is chosen sufficiently close to 1, answering a question posed in [Commun. Math. Phys. 104, 547 (1986)]. The proof is based on multi-scale analysis.
Tile \(\mathbb{R}^2\) into disjoint unit squares \(\{S_k\}_{k \geq 0}\) with the origin being the centre of \(S_0\) and say that \(S_i\) and \(S_j\) are star adjacent if they share a corner and plus adjacent if they share an edge. Every square is either vacant or occupied. In this paper, we use the structure of the outermost boundaries derived in Ganesan (2015) to alternately obtain duality between star and plus connected components in the following sense: There is a plus connected cycle of vacant squares attached to surrounding the finite star connected component containing the origin. We als…
We generalize and improve results of Andrews, Gravner, Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik on metastability thresholds for generalized two-dimensional bootstrap percolation models, and answer several of their open problems and conjectures. Specifically, we prove slow convergence and localization bounds for Holroyd, Liggett, and Romik's k-percolation models, and in the process provide a unified and improved treatment of existing results for bootstrap, modified bootstrap, and Frobose percolation. Furthermore, we prove improved asymptotic bounds for the generating functions of partitions without k-gaps, …
We consider critical oriented Bernoulli percolation on the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We prove a Russo-Seymour-Welsh type result which allows us to derive several new results concerning the critical behavior: - We establish that the probability that the origin is connected to distance $n$ decays polynomially fast in $n$. - We prove that the critical cluster of the origin conditioned to survive to distance $n$ has a typical width $w_n$ satisfying $εn^{2/5} < w_n < n^{1-ε}$ for some $ε> 0$. The sub-linear polynomial fluctuations contrast with the supercritical regime where $w_n$ is known to …
We show that fractal (or "Mandelbrot") percolation in two dimensions produces a set containing no directed paths, when the set produced has zero area. This improves a similar result by the first author in the case of constant retention probabilities to the case of retention probabilities approaching 1.
A new proof of a Theorem of Nagnibeda and Pak on critical probabilities is given. The distinctive feature is to use a criterion of Folner which has been largely (and inexplicably) forgotten.
In this paper we study a variation of the accessibility percolation model, this is also motivated by evolutionary biology and evolutionary computation. Consider a tree whose vertices are labeled with random numbers. We study the probability of having a monotone subsequence of a path from the root to a leaf, where any $k$ consecutive vertices in the path contain at least one vertex of the subsequence. An $n$-ary tree, with height $h$, is a tree whose vertices at distance at most $h-1$ to the root have $n$ children. For the case of $n$-ary trees, we prove that, as $h$ tends to infinity the proba…
In this paper we investigate the boundary non-crossing probabilities of a fractional Brownian motion considering some general deterministic trend function. We derive bounds for non-crossing probabilities and discuss the case of a large trend function. As a by-product we solve a minimization problem related to the norm of the trend function.
Consider critical percolation in two dimensions. Under the condition that there are k disjoint alternating black and white arms crossing the annulus A(l,n), we prove a central limit theorem and variance estimates for the winding angles of the arms (as n\rightarrow \infty, l fixed). This result confirms a prediction of Beffara and Nolin (Ann. Probab. 39: 1286--1304, 2011). Using this theorem, we also get a CLT for the multiple-armed incipient infinite cluster (IIC) measures.
We consider metric graph Gaussian free field (GFF) defined on polygons of $δ\mathbb{Z}^2$ with alternating boundary data. The crossing probabilities for level-set percolation of metric graph GFF have scaling limits. When the boundary data is well-chosen, the scaling limits of crossing probabilities can be explicitly constructed as "fusion" of multiple SLE$_4$ pure partition functions.
We continue our study of the chemical (graph) distance inside large critical percolation clusters in dimension two. We prove new estimates, which involve the three-arm probability, for the point-to-surface and point-to-point distances. We show that the point-to-point distance in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ between two points in the same critical percolation cluster has infinite second moment. We also give quantitative versions of our previous results comparing the length of the shortest crossing to that of the lowest crossing of a box.
We provide a new proof of the near-critical scaling relation $β=ξ_1ν$ for Bernoulli percolation on the square lattice already proved by Kesten in 1987. We rely on a novel approach that does not invoke Russo's formula, but rather relates differences in crossing probabilities at different scales. The argument is shorter and more robust than previous ones and is more likely to be adapted to other models. The same approach may be used to prove the other scaling relations appearing in Kesten's work.
We prove that for Voronoi percolation on $\mathbb{R}^d$, there exists $p_c\in[0,1]$ such that - for $p<p_c$, there exists $c_p>0$ such that $\mathbb{P}_p[0\text{ connected to distance }n]\leq \exp(-c_p n)$, - there exists $c>0$ such that for $p>p_c$, $\mathbb{P}_p[0\text{ connected to }\infty]\geq c(p-p_c)$. For dimension 2, this result offers a new way of showing that $p_c(2)=1/2$. This paper belongs to a series of papers using the theory of algorithms to prove sharpness of the phase transition.
We prove that there exist natural generalizations of the classical bootstrap percolation model on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ that have non-trivial critical probabilities, and moreover we characterize all homogeneous, local, monotone models with this property. Van Enter (in the case $d=r=2$) and Schonmann (for all $d \geq r \geq 2$) proved that $r$-neighbour bootstrap percolation models have trivial critical probabilities on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for every choice of the parameters $d \geq r \geq 2$: that is, an initial set of density $p$ almost surely percolates $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for every $p>0$. These results effec…
We derive explicit formulas for probabilities of Brownian motion with jumps crossing linear or piecewise linear boundaries in any finite interval. We then use these formulas to approximate the boundary crossing probabilities for general nonlinear boundaries. The jump process can be any integer-valued process and jump sizes can have general distributions. Moreover, the jump sizes can be even correlated and/or non-identically distributed. The numerical algorithm is straightforward and easy to implement. Some numerical examples are presented.
In this contribution we derive an explicit formula for the boundary non-crossing probabilities for Slepian processes associated with the piecewise linear boundary function. This formula is used to develop an approximation formula to the boundary non-crossing probabilities for general continuous boundaries. The formulas we developed are easy to implement in calculation the boundary non-crossing probabilities.
We consider a type of dependent percolation introduced by Aizenman and Grimmett, who showed that certain "enhancements" of independent (Bernoulli) percolation, called essential, make the percolation critical probability strictly smaller. In this paper we first prove that, for two-dimensional enhancements with a natural monotonicity property, being essential is also a necessary condition to shift the critical point. We then show that (some) critical exponents and the scaling limit of crossing probabilities of a two-dimensional percolation process are unchanged if the process is subjected to a m…
We compare the probabilities of arm events in two-dimensional invasion percolation to those in critical percolation. Arm events are defined by the existence of a prescribed color sequence of invaded and non-invaded connections from the origin to distance n. We find that, for sequences of a particular form, arm probabilities in invasion percolation and critical percolation are comparable, uniformly in n, while they differ by a power of n for all others. A corollary of our results is the existence, on the triangular lattice, of arm exponents for invasion percolation, for any color sequence with …
Prompted by an example arising in critical percolation, we study some reflected Brownian motions in symmetric planar domains and show that they are intertwined with one-dimensional diffusions. In the case of a wedge, the reflected Brownian motion is intertwined with the 3-dimensional Bessel process. This implies some simple hitting distributions and sheds some light on the formula proposed by Watts for double-crossing probabilities in critical percolation.
Let L_n denote the lowest crossing of a square 2n\times2n box for critical site percolation on the triangular lattice imbedded in Z^2. Denote also by F_n the pioneering sites extending below this crossing, and Q_n the pivotal sites on this crossing. Combining the recent results of Smirnov and Werner [Math. Res. Lett. 8 (2001) 729-744] on asymptotic probabilities of multiple arm paths in both the plane and half-plane, Kesten's [Comm. Math. Phys. 109 (1987) 109-156] method for showing that certain restricted multiple arm paths are probabilistically equivalent to unrestricted ones, and our own se…
