Under the action of coherent periodic driving a generic quantum system will undergo Floquet heating and continously absorb energy until it reaches a featureless thermal state. The phase-space constraints induced by certain symmetries can, however, prevent this and allow the system to dynamically form robust steady states with off-diagonal long-range order. In this work, we take the Hubbard model on an arbitrary lattice with arbitrary filling and, by simultaneously diagonalising the two possible SU(2) symmetries of the system, we analytically construct the correlated steady states for different symmetry classes of driving. This construction allows us to make verifiable, quantitative predictions about the long-range particle-hole and spin-exchange correlations that these states can possess. In the case when both SU(2) symmetries are preserved in the thermodynamic limit we show how the driving can be used to form a unique condensate which simultaneously hosts particle-hole and spin-wave order.
We show how, upon heating the spin degrees of freedom of the Hubbard model to infinite temperature, the symmetries of the system allow the creation of steady-states with long-range correlations between $η$-pairs. With induce this heating with either dissipation or periodic driving and evolve the system towards a nonequilibrium steady state, a process which melts all spin order in the system. The steady state is identical in both cases and displays distance-invariant off-diagonal $η$-correlations. These correlations were first recognised in the superconducting eigenstates in Yang's seminal pape…
The cooperation between non-Hermiticity and interaction brings about a lot of counterintuitive behaviors, which are impossible to exist in the framework of the Hermitian system. We study the effect of a non-Hermitian impurity on the Hubbard model in the context of $η$ symmetry. We show that the non-Hermitian Hubbard Hamiltonian can respect a full real spectrum even if a local non-Hermitian impurity is applied to. The balance between dissipation of single fermion and on-site pair fluctuation results in a highest-order coalescing state with off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO). Based on the cha…
We discuss current carrying non-equilibrium steady state of an open fermionic Hubbard chain that is strongly driven by markovian incoherent processes localized at the chain ends. An explicit form of exact many-body density operator for any value of the coupling parameter is presented. The structure of a matrix product form of the solution is encoded in terms of a novel diagrammatic technique which should allow for generalization to other integrable non-equillibrium models.
We show that a resonant pulsed field can induce a steady superconducting state even in the deep Mott insulating phase of the dimerized Hubbard model. The superconductivity found here in the non-equilibrium steady state is due to the $η$-pairing mechanism, characterized by the existence of the off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO), and is absent in the ground-state phase diagram. The key of the scheme lies in the generation of the field-induced charge density wave (CDW) state that is from the valence bond solid. The dynamics of this state resides in the highly-excited subspace of dimerized Hubb…
The Hubbard model extended by either nearest-neighbour Coulomb correlation and/or nearest neighbour Heisenberg exchange is solved analytically for a triangle and tetrahedron. All eigenvalues and eigenvectors are given as functions of the model parameters in a closed form. The groundstate crossings and degeneracies are discussed both for the canonical and grand-canonical energy levels. The grand canonical potential and the electron occupation of the related cluster gases were calculated for arbitrary values (attractive and repulsive) of the three interaction constants. In the pure Hubbard model…
We present in detail a method we recently introduced (PRL. 103, 176404 (2009)) to describe finite systems in and out of equilibrium, where the evolution in time is performed via the Kadanoff-Baym Equations (KBE) within Many-Body Perturbation Theory (MBPT). The main property we analyze is the time-dependent density. We also study is the exchange-correlation potential of TDDFT, obtained via reverse engineering from the time-dependent density. Our systems consist of small, strongly correlated clusters, described by a Hubbard Hamiltonian within the Hartree-Fock, second Born, GW and T-matrix approx…
The self-energy-functional approach proposed recently is applied to the single-band Hubbard model at half-filling to study the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition within the most simple but non-trivial approximation. This leads to a mean-field approach which is interesting conceptually: Trial self-energies from a two-site single-impurity Anderson model are used to evaluate an exact and general variational principle. While this restriction of the domain of the functional represents a strong approximation, the approach is still thermodynamically consistent by construction and represents a co…
Using a variational numerical method we compute the time-evolution of the Holstein-Hubbard bipolaron from its ground state when at t=0 the constant electric field is switched on. The system is evolved taking into account full quantum effects until it reaches a quasi-stationary state. In the zero-field limit the current shows Bloch oscillations characteristic for the adiabatic regime where the electric field causes the bipolaron to evolve along the quasiparticle band. Bipolaron remains bound and the net current remains zero in this regime. At larger electric fields the system enters the dissipa…
We calculate the density of states in the half-filled Hubbard model on a Bethe lattice with infinite connectivity. Based on our analytical results to second order in $t/U$, we propose a new `Fixed-Energy Exact Diagonalization' scheme for the numerical study of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. Corroborated by results from the Random Dispersion Approximation, we find that the gap opens at $U_{\rm c}=4.43 \pm 0.05$. Moreover, the density of states near the gap increases algebraically as a function of frequency with an exponent $α=1/2$ in the insulating phase. We critically examine other analytica…
We calculate the exact analytical coefficients of the $β$ expansion of the grand-canonical partition function of the unidimensional Hubbard model up to order $β^5$, using an alternative method, based on properties of the Grassmann algebra. The results derived are non-perturbative and no restrictions on the set of parameters that characterize the model are required. By applying this method we obtain analytical results for the thermodynamical quantities, in the high-temeprature limit, for arbitrary density of electrons in the unidimensional chain.
Hubbard ladders are an important stepping stone to the physics of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. While many of their properties are accessible to numerical and analytical techniques, the question of whether weakly hole-doped Hubbard ladders are dominated by superconducting or charge-density-wave correlations has so far eluded a definitive answer. In particular, previous numerical simulations of Hubbard ladders have seen a much faster decay of superconducting correlations than expected based on analytical arguments. We revisit this question using a state-of-the-art implementation of the den…
We study the steady-state dynamics of the Hubbard model driven out-of-equilibrium by a constant electric field and coupled to a dissipative heat bath. For very strong field, we find a dimensional reduction: the system behaves as an equilibrium Hubbard model in lower dimensions. We derive steady-state equations for the dynamical mean field theory in the presence of dissipation. We discuss how the electric field induced dimensional crossover affects the momentum resolved and integrated spectral functions, the energy distribution function, as well as the steady current in the non-linear regime.
For the calculation of charge excitations as those observed in, e.g., photo-emission spectroscopy or in electron-energy loss spectroscopy, a correct description of ground-state charge properties is essential. In strongly correlated systems like the undoped cuprates this is a highly non-trivial problem. In this paper we derive a non-perturbative analytical approximation for the ground state of the three-band Hubbard model on an infinite, half filled CuO_2 plane. By comparison with Projector Quantum Monte Carlo calculations it is shown that the resulting expressions correctly describe the charge…
The Hubbard model has a special role in Condensed Matter Theory as it is considered as the simplest Hamiltonian model one can write in order to describe anomalous physical properties of some class of real materials. Unfortunately, this model is not exactly solved except for some limits and therefore one should resort to analytical methods, like the Equations of Motion Approach, or to numerical techniques in order to attain a description of its relevant features in the whole range of physical parameters (interaction, filling and temperature). In this manuscript, the Composite Operator Method, w…
The Self Consistent Random Phase Approximation (SCRPA) and a Direct Analytical (DA) method are proposed to solve the Extended Hubbard Model in 1D. We have considered an Extended Hubbard Model (EHM) including on-site and off-site interactions for closed chains in one dimension with periodic boundary conditions. The comparison of the SCRPA results with ones obtained by a Direct Analytical approach shows that the SCRPA treats the problem of these closed chains with a rigorous manner. The analysis of the nearest-neighbour repulsion effect on the dynamics of our closed chains shows that this repuls…
Two-particle generalized susceptibilities and their irreducible vertex functions play a prominent role in the quantum many-body theory for correlated electron systems. They act as basic building blocks in the parquet formalism which provides a flexible scheme for the calculation of spectral and response functions. The irreducible vertices themselves have recently attracted increased attention as unexpected divergences in these functions have been identified. Remarkably, such singularities appear already for one of the simplest strongly interacting systems: the atomic limit of the half-filled H…
The description of interactions in strongly-correlated topological phases of matter remains a challenge. Here, we develop a stochastic functional approach for interacting topological insulators including both charge and spin channels. We find that the Mott transition of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model may be described by the variational principle with one equation. We present different views of this equation from the electron Green's function, the free-energy and the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. The band gap remains finite at the transition and the Mott phase is characterized by antiferromagnetism in…
We study the Luttinger-liquid parameter $K_ρ$ of the Hubbard chain and the Hubbard ladder models by the ordinary perturbation method combined with the Luttinger-liquid relation. According to the Luttinger-liquid relation, the critical exponent $K_ρ$ is related to the charge susceptibility $χ_c$ and the Drude weight D by $ K\sbρ={1/2}(πχ_c D)^{1/2}$. By calculating these quantities with the perturbation method, we obtain $K_ρ$ at the first-order analytically and up to the second-order numerically. We compare these results with results of the Bethe ansatz for the Hubbard chain and that of the nu…
By use of the conservation laws a four-site Hubbard model coupled to a particle bath within an external magnetic field in z-direction was diagonalized. The analytical dependence of both the eigenvalues and the eigenstates on the interaction strength, the chemical potential and magnetic field was calculated. It is demonstrated that the low temperature behaviour is determined by a delicate interplay between many-particle states differing in electron number and spin if the electron density is away from half-filling. The grand partition sum is calculated and the specific heat, the suszeptibility a…

We investigate the dynamics of a two-dimensional Hubbard model in a static electric field in order to identify the conditions to reach a non-equilibrium stationary state. For a generic electric field, the convergence to a stationary state requires the coupling to a thermostating bath absorbing the work done by the external force. Following the real-time dynamics of the system, we show that a non-equilibrium stationary state is reached for essentially any value of the coupling to the bath. We map out a phase diagram in terms of dissipation and electric field strengths and identify the dissipati…
The Kotliar and Ruckenstein slave-boson representation of the Hubbard model allows to obtain an approximation of the charge dynamical response function resulting from the Gaussian fluctuations around the paramagnetic saddle-point in analytical form. Numerical evaluation in the thermodynamical limit yields charge excitation spectra consisting of a continuum, a gapless collective mode with anisotropic zero-sound velocity, and a correlation induced high-frequency mode at $ω\approx U$. In this work we show that this analytical expression obeys the particle-hole symmetry of the model on any biparti…
The known analytical properties of the Green's function and self-energy rule out an ambiguity of the self-energy. The noninteracting Green's functions obtained by Kozik et al. in arXiv:1407.5687 likely have pathological properties.
We study a simple model of photovoltaic energy harvesting across a Mott insulating gap consisting of a correlated layer connected to two metallic leads held at different chemical potentials. Upon driving the layer with a time periodic electric field a particle current is induced from the low-energy to the high-energy lead. We address in particular the issue of impact ionization, whereby a particle photoexcited to the high-energy part of the upper Hubbard band uses its extra energy to produce a second particle-hole excitation. We find a drastic increase of the photocurrent upon entering the fre…
Motivated by the stripe developments in cuprates, we review some analytical results of our studies of the charge- and spin density modulations (CDW and SDW) in a weakly coupled one dimensional repulsive electron system on a lattice. It is shown that close to half filling, in the high temperature regime above the mean field transition temperature, short range repulsions favor charge density fluctuations with wave vectors bearing special relations with those of the spin density fluctuations. In the low temperature regime, not only the wave vectors, but also the mutual phases of the CDW and SDW b…
The formalism for exactly calculating the retarded and advanced Green's functions of strongly correlated lattice models in a uniform electric field is derived within dynamical mean-field theory. To illustrate the method, we solve for the nonequilibrium density of states of the Hubbard model in both the metallic and Mott insulating phases at half-filling (with an arbitrary strength electric field) by employing the numerical renormalization group as the impurity solver. This general approach can be applied to any strongly correlated lattice model in the limit of large dimensions.
We study the single-band Hubbard model in the presence of a large spatially uniform electric field out of equilibrium. Using the Keldysh nonequilibrium formalism, we solve the problem using perturbation theory in the Coulomb interaction U. We present numerical results for the charge current, the total energy of the system and the double occupancy on an infinite-dimensional hypercubic lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping. The system is isolated from an external bath and is in the paramagnetic state. We show that an electric field pulse can drive the system to a steady nonequilibrium state, whi…
We study the Hubbard model with time-reversal invariant flux and spin-orbit coupling and position-dependent onsite energies on the kagome lattice, using numerical and analytical methods. In particular, we perform calculations using real space dynamical mean-field theory (R-DMFT). To study the topological properties of the system, we use the topological Hamiltonian approach. We obtain a rich phase diagram: for weak and intermediate interactions, depending on the model parameters, the system is in the band insulator, topological insulator, or metallic phase, while for strong interactions the sys…
Spin-charge separation (SCS) is a striking manifestation of strong correlations in low-dimensional quantum systems, whereby a fermion splits into separate spin and charge excitations that travel at different speeds. Here, we demonstrate that periodic driving enables control over SCS in a Hubbard system near half-filling. In one dimension, we predict analytically an exotic regime where charge travels slower than spin and can even become 'frozen', in agreement with numerical calculations. In two dimensions, the driving slows both charge and spin, and leads to complex interferences between single…
We study how strongly correlated electrons on a dissipative lattice evolve from equilibrium when driven by a constant electric field, focusing on the extent of the linear regime and hysteretic non-linear effects at higher fields. We access the non-equilibrium steady states, non-perturbatively in both the field and the electronic interactions, by means of a non-equilibrium dynamical mean-field theory in the Coulomb gauge. The linear response regime is limited by Joule heating effects and breaks down at fields orders of magnitude smaller than the quasi-particle energy scale. For large electronic…
We calculate the Hubbard bands for the half-filled Hubbard model on a Bethe lattice with infinite coordination number up to and including third order in the inverse Hubbard interaction. We employ the Kato--Takahashi perturbation theory to solve the self-consistency equation of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory analytically for the single-impurity Anderson model in multi-chain geometry. The weight of the secondary Hubbard sub-bands is of fourth order so that the two-chain geometry is sufficient for our study. Even close to the Mott--Hubbard transition, our results for the Mott--Hubbard gap agree …
We calculate the one-particle density of states for the Mott-Hubbard insulating phase of the Hubbard model on a Bethe lattice in the limit of infinite coordination number. We employ the Kato-Takahashi perturbation theory around the strong-coupling limit to derive the Green function. We show that the Green function for the lower Hubbard band can be expressed in terms of polynomials in the bare hole-hopping operator. We check our technique against the exact solution of the Falicov-Kimball model and give explicit results up to and including second order in the inverse Hubbard interaction. Our res…
We investigate charge fluctuations in the two-dimensional Hubbard model as a function of doping, interaction strength, next-nearest-neighbor hopping, and temperature within the eight-site dynamical cluster approximation. In the regime of intermediate interaction strengths, we find that $d$ density wave fluctuations, which had previously been postulated using analytical arguments, are present and strong but cannot be interpreted as the cause of the pseudogap in the model, due to their evolution with doping and interaction strength. For all parameters away from half filling, the charge fluctuati…
We propose a new way of analyzing the Hubbard model using equations of motion (EOM) for the higher-order Green's functions approach within the DMFT scheme. In calculating the higher order Green function we will differentiate over both Times (t) and (t'). This allows us to obtain the metallic Fermi liquid at nonzero Coulomb interaction, where the three center density of states (DOS) structure with two Hubbard bands and the quasiparticle resonance peak is obtained. At small Coulomb interactions and zero temperature the height of the quasiparticle resonance peak on the Fermi energy is constant si…
Recently Han and Heary proposed an approach to steady-state quantum transport through mesoscopic structures, which maps the non-equilibrium problem onto a family of auxiliary quantum impurity systems subject to imaginary voltages. We employ continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo solvers to calculate accurate imaginary time data for the auxiliary models. The spectral function is obtained from a maximum entropy analytical continuation in both Matsubara frequency and complexified voltage. To enable the analytical continuation we construct a kernel which is compatible with the analytical structure of…
