We investigate the effects of a magnetic impurity in a multiband touching fermion system, specifically, a triple-component semimetal with a flat band, which can be realized in a family of transition metal silicides (CoSi family). When the chemical potential coincides with the flat band, it is expected that the impurity response of this system will be very different from that of an ordinary Dirac or Weyl semimetal of which the density of states at the Fermi level vanishes. We first determine the phase diagram within the mean-field approximation. Then, we study the local moment regime by employing two different methods. In the low temperature regime, the Kondo screening is analyzed by the variational wavefunction approach and the impurity contributions to the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity are obtained, while at higher temperature, we use the equation of motion approach to calculate the occupation number of the impurity site and the impurity magnetic susceptibility. The results are compared and contrasted with those in the usual Fermi liquid and the Dirac/Weyl semimetals.
We utilize the variational method to study the Kondo screening of a spin-$1/2$ magnetic impurity in a three-dimensional (3D) Weyl semimetal with two Weyl nodes along the $k_z$-axis. The model reduces to a 3D Dirac semimetal when the separation of the two Weyl nodes vanishes. When the chemical potential lies at the nodal point, $μ=0$, the impurity spin is screened only if the coupling between the impurity and the conduction electron exceeds a critical value. For finite but small $μ$, the impurity spin is weakly bound due to the low density of state, which is proportional to $μ^2$, contrary to t…
Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, combined with a topological analysis, we have investigated the electronic properties of $Cd_3As_2$ and $Na_3Bi$ Dirac topological semimetals doped with non-magnetic and magnetic impurities. Our systematic analysis shows that the selective breaking of the inversion, rotational and time-reversal symmetry, controlled by specific choices of the impurity doping, induces phase transitions from the original Dirac semimetal to a variety of topological phases such as, topological insulator, trivial semimetal, non-magnetic and magnetic Weyl …
Weyl Semimetals (WS) are a new class of Dirac-type materials exhibiting a phase with bulk energy nodes and an associated vanishing density of states (DOS). We investigate the stability of this nodal DOS suppression in the presence of local impurities and consider whether or not such a suppression can be lifted by impurity-induced resonances. We find that while a scalar (chemical potential type) impurity can always induce a resonance at arbitrary energy and hence lift the DOS suppression at Dirac/Weyl nodes, for many other impurity types (e.g. magnetic or orbital-mixing), resonances are forbidd…
We study interaction effects, including both long-ranged Coulomb and short-range interactions, in three-dimensional topological triple-Weyl semimetals whose triple-Weyl points are protected by crystal symmetries. By performing Wilsonian renormalization group analysis of the low-energy effective field theory of the minimal model with triple-Weyl nodes, we find that the fixed point of noninteracting triple-Weyl fermions is unstable in the presence of Coulomb interactions and flows to a nontrivial stable fixed point representing marginal Fermi liquids with anisotropic screening effects. We furthe…
We study the quantum critical phenomena emerging at the transition from triple-Weyl semimetal to band insulator, which is a topological phase transition described by the change of topological invariant. The critical point realizes a new type of semimetal state in which the fermion dispersion is cubic along two directions and quadratic along the third. Our renormalization group analysis reveals that, the Coulomb interaction is marginal at low energies and even arbitrarily weak Coulomb interaction suffices to induce an infrared fixed point. We compute a number of observable quantities, and show …
Topological semimetals are three dimensional materials with symmetry-protected massless bulk excitations. As a special case, Weyl nodal-line semimetals are realized in materials either having no inversion or broken time-reversal symmetry and feature bulk nodal lines. The 111-family of materials, LaNiSi, LaPtSi and LaPtGe (all lacking inversion symmetry), belong to this class. Here, by combining muon-spin rotation and relaxation with thermodynamic measurements, we find that these materials exhibit a fully-gapped superconducting ground state, while spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry a…
We derive the expression of the abelian axial anomaly in the so-called multi-Weyl and triple-point crossing semimetals. No simplifying restrictions are assumed on the symmetry of the spectrum. Three different computation methods are considered: the perturbative quantum field theory procedure which is based on the evaluation of the one-loop Feynman diagrams, the Nielsen-Ninomiya method, and the Atiyah-Singer index argument. It is shown that the functional form of the axial anomaly does not depend on the Lorentz symmetry, but it is determined by the gauge structure group. We discuss the stabilit…
Weyl semimetals have been intensely studied as a three dimensional realization of a Dirac-like excitation spectrum where the conduction bands and valence bands touch at isolated Weyl points in momentum space. Like in graphene, this property entails various peculiar electronic properties. However, recent theoretical studies have suggested that resonant scattering from rare regions can give rise to a non-zero density of states even at charge neutrality. Here, we give a detailed account of this effect and demonstrate how the semimetallic nature is suppressed at the lowest scales. To this end, we …
Triple point fermions are elusive electronic excitations that generalize Dirac and Weyl modes beyond the conventional high energy paradigm. Yet, finding real materials naturally hosting these excitations at the Fermi energy has remained challenging. Here we show that twisted bilayer graphene is a versatile platform to realize robust triple point fermions in two dimensions. In particular, we establish that the introduction of localized impurities lifts one of the two degenerate Dirac cones, yielding triple point fermions at charge neutrality. Furthermore, we show that the valley polarization is…
We study the Anderson model in which a configuration with a doublet is hybridized with another with a singlet and a triplet. We calculate the conductance through the system as a function of temperature and bias voltage, near the quantum critical line for which the system is exactly solvable. The results explain recent transport measurements in a single-molecule quantum dot.
We investigate the electron properties of the monolayer and bilayer silicene which is the honeycomb lattice consist of silicon atoms, including the optical conductivity and charged impurity scattering, due to the quasipatricle Dirac-like behaviors near the K-point of silicene. The spin, valley, sublattice degrees of freedom are taken into consider in the multi-band tight-binding model. In momentum space, the scattering matrix which connects the two bare (without interaction) Green's functions in the quasiparticle momentum transport process, could be momentum-independent for the single impuirit…
Magnetic topological semimetals (TSMs) are topological quantum materials with broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) and isolated nodal points or lines near the Fermi level. Their topological properties would typically reveal from the bulk-edge correspondence principle as nontrivial surface states such as Fermi arcs or drumhead states, etc. Depending on the degeneracies and distribution of the nodes in the crystal momentum space, TSMs are usually classified into Weyl semimetals (WSMs), Dirac semimetals (DSMs), nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs), triple-point semimetals (TPSMs), etc. In this review art…
Mobile impurities in cold atomic gases constitute a new platform for investigating polaron physics. Here we show that when impurity atoms interact with a two-dimensional Fermi gas with quadratic band touching the polaron picture may either hold or break down depending on the particle-hole asymmetry of the band structure. If the hole band has a smaller effective mass than the particle band, the quasiparticle is stable and its diffusion coefficient varies with temperature as $D(T) \propto \ln^2 T$. If the hole band has larger mass, the quasiparticle weight vanishes at low energies due to an emer…
The low-energy behaviors of gapless double- and triple-Weyl fermions caused by the interplay of long-range Coulomb interaction and quenched disorder are studied by performing a renormalization group analysis. It is found that an arbitrarily weak disorder drives the double-Weyl semimetal to undergo a quantum phase transition into a compressible diffusive metal, independent of the disorder type and the Coulomb interaction strength. In contrast, the nature of the ground state of triple-Weyl fermion system relies sensitively on the specific disorder type in the noninteracting limit: The system is …
Noncollinear and noncoplanar magnetic orders lead to unusual electronic structures and transport properties. We here investigate two types of multiple-Q magnetically ordered states and a topological phase transition between them in two dimensions. One is a coplanar but noncollinear double-Q state on a square lattice, which is a semimetal accommodating massless Dirac electrons. The other is a noncoplanar triple-Q state on a triangular lattice, which is a Chern insulator showing the quantum anomalous Hall effect. We discuss the peculiar electronic structures in these two multiple-Q states in a u…
The magnetic resonance spectrum of spin clusters formed in spin-Peierls magnets in the vicinity of impurity ions was investigated. The observed temperature dependences of the effective g-factor and the linewidth of the electron spin resonance (ESR) in crystals of Cu(1-x)Ni(x)GeO(3) are described in the model of the exchange narrowing of the two-component spectrum with one component ascribed to spin clusters and exhibiting an anomalous value of the $g$-factor and the other related to triplet excitations. An estimation of the size of the suppressed dimerization region around the impurity ion is …
We consider a strongly correlated ladder with diagonal hopping and exchange interactions described by $t-J$ type hamiltonian. We study the dynamics of a single hole in this model in the presence of a static non-magnetic (or magnetic) impurity. In the case of a non-magnetic (NM) impurity we solve the problem analytically both in the triplet (S=1) and singlet (S=0) sectors. In the triplet sector the hole doesn't form any bound state with the impurity. However, in the singlet sector the hole forms bound states of different symmetries with increasing $J/t$ values. Binding energies of those impurit…
We study the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities located on the surface of a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with two Dirac nodes in the band structure. By taking into account both bulk and surface contributions to the exchange interaction between the localized spins, we demonstrate that the surface contribution in general dominates the bulk one at distances larger than the inverse node separation due to a weaker power-law decay. We find a strong anisotropy of the surface term with respect to the spins being aligned along the node separation axis or perpendicular to it. In the m…
Integral equations for thermodynamic quantities are derived in the framework of the non-crossing approximation (NCA). Entropy and specific heat of 4f contribution are calculated without numerical differentiations of thermodynamic potential. The formulation is applied to systems such as PrFe4P12 with singlet-triplet crystalline electric field (CEF) levels.
We study the singlet-triplet Anderson model (STAM) in which a configuration with a doublet is hybridized with another with a singlet and a triplet, as a minimal model to describe two-level quantum dots coupled to two metallic leads in effectively a one-channel fashion. The model has a quantum phase transition which separates regions of a doublet and a singlet ground state. The limits of integer valence of the STAM (which include a model similar to the underscreened spin-1 Kondo model) are derived and used to predict the behavior of the conductance through the system at both sides of the transi…
The electronic structure around an impurity in spin triplet p-wave superconductors is studied by the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory on a tight-binding model, where we have chosen $\sin{p_x}{+}{\rm i}\sin{p_y}$-wave or $\sin{(p_x+p_y)}{+}{\rm i}\sin{({-}p_x{+}p_y)}$-wave states which are considered to be candidates for the pairing state in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. We calculate the spontaneous current and the local density of states around the impurity and discuss the difference between the two types of pairing. We propose that it is possible to discriminate the two pairing states by studying the spatial…
Cooper instability associated with superconductivity in the two-dimensional semi-Dirac semimetals is attentively studied in the presence of attractive Cooper-pairing interaction, which is the projection of an attractive fermion-fermion interaction. Performing the standard renormalization group analysis shows that the Cooper theorem is violated at zero chemical potential but instead Cooper instability can be generated only if the absolute strength of fermion-fermion coupling exceeds certain critical value and transfer momentum is restricted to a confined region, which is determined by the initi…
In his renormalization paper of the Kondo effect Wilson replaced the full band of s-electrons by a small number of ''Wilson states''. He started from a rather artificial symmetric band with constant density of states and constant interaction with the impurity. It is shown in the present paper that with a minor modification the Wilson states are optimally suited to treat the interaction of an impurity with an arbitrary s-band. Each Wilson state represents electrons of a whole energy range. It carries the interaction of all these electrons with the impurity. All the other electron states in this…
The exchange interaction between electrons located at different randomly distributed impurities is studied for small density of impurities. The singlet-triplet splitting 2J(R) is calculated for two Coulomb centers at a distance R. Interpolated formulas are found which work for all distances R from zero to infinity. The data from atomic physics are used for the interpolation in three-dimensional case. For two-dimensional case the original calculations are performed to find asymptotic behavior of the splitting at large R, the splitting for the ``two-dimensional helium atom'' (R=0) and the splitt…
We performed calculations of the electronic band structure and the Fermi surface as well as measured the longitudinal resistivity $ρ_{xx}(T,H)$, Hall resistivity $ρ_{xy}(T,H)$, and magnetic susceptibility as a function of temperature and various magnetic fields for VAs$_2$ with a monoclinic crystal structure. The band structure calculations show that VAs$_2$ is a nodal-line semimetal when spin-orbit coupling is ignored. The emergence of a minimum at around 11 K in $ρ_{xx}(T)$ measured at $H$ = 0 demonstrates that an additional magnetic impurity (V$^{4+}$, $S$ = 1/2) occurs in VAs$_2$ single cr…
We study the hydrodynamic transport of electrons in a Weyl semimetal in a strong magnetic field. Impurity scattering in a Weyl semimetal with two Weyl nodes is strongly anisotropic as a function of the direction of the field and is significantly suppressed if the field is perpendicular to the separation between the nodes in momentum space. This allows for convenient access to the hydrodynamic regime of transport, in which electron scattering is dominated by interactions rather than by impurities. In a strong magnetic field, electrons move predominantly parallel to the direction of the field, a…
We report comparative substitution effects of nonmagnetic Ti^(4+) and magnetic Ir^(4+) impurities for Ru^(4+) in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. We found that both impurities suppress the superconductivity completely at a concentration of approximately 0.15%, reflecting the high sensitivity to translational symmetry breaking in Sr2RuO4. In addition, a rapid enhancement of residual resistivity is in quantitative agreement with unitarity-limit scattering. Our result suggests that both nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities in Sr2RuO4 act as strong potential scatterers, similar to the nonma…
The Kondo effect strongly depends on spin and orbital degrees of freedom of unconventional superconductivity. We focus on the Kondo effect in the $p_x + i p_y$-wave and $d_{x^2 - y^2} + i d_{xy}$-wave superconductors to compare the magnetic properties of the spin-triplet and spin-singlet Cooper pairs. The difference appears when both of the paired electrons couple to a local spin directly. For the $p_x + i p_y$-wave, the ground state is always a spin doublet for a $S_{\rm imp} = 1/2$ local spin, and it is always a spin singlet for $S_{\rm imp} = 1$. The latter is due to uniaxial spin anisotrop…
We discuss a device --- a purely capacitively coupled interacting spinless triple quantum dot system --- for the observation of the SU(3) Kondo effect. Unlike more familiar SU(2) and SU(4) Kondo effects in quantum dot devices which lead to unitary linear conductance at low temperatures, the SU(3) Kondo scenario can be easily identified by the conductance pinned to a characteristic value of 3/4 of the unitary limit. This is associated with the interesting fact that the SU(3) Kondo effect does not occur at the particle-hole symmetric point, where the system is found instead in the valence-fluctu…
We calculate the singlet-triplet splitting for a couple of two-dimensional electrons in the potential of two positively charged impurities which are located out of plane. We consider different relations between vertical distances of impurities $h_1$ and $h_2$ and their lateral distance $R$. Such a system has never been studied in atomic physics but the methods, worked out for regular two-atomic molecules and helium atom, have been found to be useful. Analytical expressions for several different limiting configurations of impurities are obtained an interpolated formula for intermediate range of…
In the presence of a magnetic impurity the spin-up and down band states are modified differently by the impurity. If the multi-electron scalar product (MESP) between the occupied spin-up and down states approaches zero then this defines an orthogonality catastrophe. In the present paper the MESP is investigated for the FAIR (Friedel Artificial Iserted Resonance) solution for a Friedel-Anderson impurity. A basis of Wilson states is used. The MESP is numerically determined for the (enforced) magnetic, the singlet, and the triplet states as a function of the number N of Wilson states. The magneti…
Three-dimensional Weyl and Dirac semimetals can support a chiral-symmetry-breaking, fully gapped, charge-density-wave order even for sufficiently weak repulsive electron-electron interactions, when placed in strong magnetic fields. In the former systems, due to the natural momentum space separation of Weyl nodes the ordered phase lacks the translational symmetry and represents an axionic phase of matter, while that in a Dirac semimetal (neglecting the Zeeman coupling) is only a trivial insulator. We present the scaling of this spectral gap for a wide range of subcritical (weak) interactions as…
